You may have noticed that the new and improved video player launched last week. What you may not having noticed is the amazing transcript feature. I've used it twice already so I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of it.
The way it works is that sometime in the wee hours of the night, the closed captioning from the TV is imported to the player and matched to the time codes. At that point, the transcript button the clip will be clickable. Later, when the better transcript is finished, that replaces the closed captioning transcript.
More magic after the jump
ADDING: And I hope someone at msnbc.com sent an angry note to the New York Times for this article because surely we deserve at least a mention.

Yay!
Love it!
Is it still geek week?
At the least, this is a geek tweak.
Wow.
Works GREAT! Awesome idea! I just got the transcripts of Friday's segment on "Obama getting a lot done." Posted on facebook... . way cool! :)
This is good news and something that many Blog readers with hearing problems have been asking about. Hoping it is cut'n'pastable to make sure we can also reach those that can not see videos where their work blocks them or something. Gonna test it later. :)
Videos can add a lot of perspective to a piece, and making them editable on the fly has been great. In the world of fast paced Blogging everything that makes getting the info out faster helps us all, and MSNBC has been doing a great job helping us get first rate info and resources in great new media ways. Thanks MSNBC... :)
Wow that is really really cool!
YEAH! Now I can copy and paste Rachel's killer reporting into response emails to my conservative uncle Dave!
Nope, not copy and pasteable, at least on Google Chrome or Firefox. :-(
I just right click for a select all/copy/paste option -- but I'm on IE.
Wow, MSNBC has the best internet content of pretty much all of the TV types now. That's totally great work.
Oh, my. I hope someone can explain to me what you all are talking about when you describe the wonders of this video player. What is it? Who makes it? Help!
I love the Rachel Maddow Show. She is a role model.
We're talking about the videos that are linked in the right margin of this blog or at http://Rachel.msnbc.com. Check out the buttons directly underneath the video window - specifically the transcript button and the CC button.
this stuff is Way over my head
test
Sorry for that. Posting didn't work initiallly.
I have a complaint: The player doesn't work as well asd the old one with Firefox. Sometimes playback stops. Some of the numbers displayed turned into NaNs (not a number, error in floating point calculation).
The problems appear especially with longer clips and if you pause for some time.
OMG This is the most awesome thing I've ever seen! I've been archiving Rachel & Keith at home since I found out about them in April 2009 so I could play clips for friends & family. I no longer have to save my home recordings! I was trying to think of a way to make the videos 'searchable' for really important points and was planning to download ALL of the transcripts to go with my videos, then indexing the transcripts, so I'd at least be able to figure out which videos had which points. This has saved me a ton of work and I am grateful!
For some reason msnbc videos freeze or just plan won't work. I uninstalled/installed flash player, scoured the internet for answers and it seems that I am not the only one with this problem. I'm using firefox on iMac OS X 10.6.4. This just started about a week ago...am wondering if its because of the new and improved crap. I just know its irritating. Anybody know a fix ?
