Bill Wolff opens the watch party in Tucson from The Rachel Maddow Show on Vimeo.
UPDATE: Bill Wolff's talk is up. In addition to a life-sized dose of the great @producerguy1, you'll get a great glimpse toward the end of what it's like to work with Rachel Maddow.
We really did have a blast last night, watching the Rachel Maddow Show with the good people of Arizona. People packed the club and the Tap Room at Tucson's Hotel Congress. The hotel's barkeep of more than half a century, Tiger, was there until the sun set and he cashed out. Bill gave a big speech. The party got a shout-out from Rachel on the show. And we met a ton of Arizonans who are trying their level best to make theirs an even more wonderful state.
Thanks for coming out, Arizona. We look forward to the next watch party, America, wherever it may be. Got a story? Got a bar? That's what we need to get started.
The guy in the white hat is Bill's dad, Dr. Jerry Wolff, who put us up for the night. Thanks, Dad!
Bonus: Karen Funk Blocher posted this on our Tucson Meetup page. It's Bill Wolff, intent on making the wireless connection to the studios in New York happen. Thanks to everyone at the Hotel Congress for the help. We couldn't have done it without you.

i was guessing bill wolff's dad from the start. striking resemblance. i'd like to thank mr. wolff, bill that is, for playing loverboy the other day. i can't get that damn song out of my head. "you wanna a piece of my heart, you better start from start, you wanna be in the show? c'mon baby let's go!". driving me nuts. oh, and btw missouri cowboys say missourah. is that debate still raging?
racheal i love your show and you are sooo cute.now that i have that out of the way there is a problem i would like to discuss.the right rails against gay people but a little research tells me that the media is not outing these gay republicans they are some of the most prominent people in the party.they vote against gay positions even though they are gay.what hypocricywhy is this not discused?divoirce rates are at 50 percent how does someone being gay affect your life?give me a break give these people thier rights whats the big f-ing deal.i just dont get it
we love you here in the midwest racheal keep kicking the right,s asses we watch every night here in st.loius
Thanks to all of you for being here to report the truth of our areas closer to the border. I have family back east who only get to hear and read the scary mis-leading stuff Gov. Jan Brewer and John McCain are spewing as part of their campaigns. Told my family back east to watch these shows and follow these video links where you guys are actually on the border speaking with the actual County Sheriffs about what is really happening down here. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for easing the needless worrying of my Mom & Dad. I told them they need to be more worried about being lied to by non-ethical, moral-less right-wing propoganda being pushed on them by psuedo-news TV programs owned, operated, and funded by the right-wing Republican Party during an election year.
everything politicians say are written down no can speak from the heart aiways reading from some damn srcpit someone has written.well im glad my eyes are open to whats going on in this country.we have 2 parties both has thier share of problems but the left is just more compassionate for people the right is for wall street big corparations and less taxes at the expense of everyone else.go ahead america give it back to the republicans and see what happens
I watched your show last night. Unlike some of the other posts, I thought the segment was uncharacteristic of your usually thorough style of in-depth reporting, and reeked of bias, and the setting in a fancy hotel bar was, at best, "high-schoolish". There were two excellent articles in Sunday's LA Times on the subject, both by Tracy Wilkinson (Wilkinson@latimes.com) reporting from Mexico City. Here is a quote from Felipe Calderone..."Their [the drug cartels]business is no longer just the traffic of drugs. Their business is to dominate everyone else. This criminal behavior is what has changed and become a defiance to the state, an attempt to replace the state". This situation is NOT a joke, not a laughing matter, not trivial. If Mexico were any other country, Hillary would be at the UN Headquarters pleading for UN Peacekeeping forces to control what has now become a civil war.
Obviously, you don't know Tucson. To call Hotel Congress a fancy hotel is a joke.
It was a great event and I'm glad I went. The border is not a laughing matter, but how republicans are framing the issue IS.
I'm a third generation Arizonian and I love my state. While everyone is focusing on the illegal immigration, I'm more concerned about the LEGAL immigration of people who disrespect our hispanic heritage and history. The way I see it, the message from Arizona is hispanics not welcomed even if you are legal.
As for your claims of the violence, the crime statistics are down not up.
Agreed- Congress is certainly not a "fancy" bar, and while the segment may have been rendered nearly incomprehensible due to the crowd screaming (oops, sorry!) and the poor-quality webcam, the points made by the interview with Sheriff Estrada were right-on: the vast majority of the politicians grandstanding about immigration are doing so just to get a vote, and aren't likely to do anything about immigration once they're elected. Also, most of the most virulent anti-immigrant, anti-immigration sentiment is based out of Maricopa County (home base of the infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio) and the closer you get to the border, here in SE Pima County and down to Santa Cruz County & Nogales, opinions are more moderate, and tempered with the daily awareness of the actual situation along the border.
after Joe Arpiao lost his street enforcement powers od 1087(g) , he used county tax payers funds to bring in Kris Kohbagh ( spelling ?) to help find a way to side step the laws and yet be able to go for skin color .
what the outcome was is the birth of SB1070 . bred with a sheriff ego and tax payers funds . and intertwined with hate ...
Sb 1070 does not a thing for the border , never has , never will . not yesterday , nor today , it is cover to cover Joe's crimes .and give him an open door to racial profile .
Russel Pierce WAS a deputy under Joe. and Russel's own son is an deputy under Joe Apiao command . the intertwined history of Arpiao and Pierce is a frightful insight . even with Russel playing in line with the N.S.M. movement here in this land of the lost and buddy -buddy with J.T. Ready .
there was an artical today where in the Arizona Repulic about the state senate wanting a spiecial session called to pass a bill for a armed civilian militia to go to the border ...... when this sick idea if it ever gets to be , shall and might be a step towards an national full blowen war with mexico and other nations . not a good idea , and sick idea to say the least
to get more insight to this i told of please check the back articals from the Phoenixnewtimes.com i am as well going to try to link up the artical from the Az republic .
http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/EJMontini/92521
this artical is what this about , STUPIDITY of the high most . and that is in step with Az politicos STUPID
It's a whole lot more insidious than just covering for Arpaio, Denise. Sheriff Joe doesn't care if he has an agreement with the feds or not. He continues to do his 'sweeps' regardless, and he doesn't need SB1070 to do it.
SB1070 is about private prisons mainly. Brewer has very close ties to that industry, and creating a new state law to be used to imprison illegals before turning them over to ICE, means lots of dollars for that industry.
In an article from the NY Times, the gist of it is laid out. The industry pays Arizona $100million up front, and Arizona turns over its prison system to the private guys. From the article:
"Nearly 30 percent of the state’s prisoners are being held in prisons operated by private companies outside the state’s 10 complexes.
In addition, other states, including Alaska and Hawaii, have contracts with private companies like Corrections Corporation of America to house their prisoners in Arizona."
This is not widely known in Arizona, and I have no doubt Arizona citizens would be just a little upset to find out we're accepting criminals from other states. This is especially true in light of the recent escape of three murderers. Nor was this escape the first one that's happened from the private system.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/24/us/24prison.html?_r=2&hpw
Haddie .
that is correct as well . even Jan Brewer has 2 staff members that are of the lobby for C.C.A. . this as well ties into joe's game plan as well . even when we had Andrew Thomas as County Attorny and the "minium Manditory sentacing " . that "Tent City " of joe's is to BREAK Down any one , inorder to get them to accept any thing tossed at them . if some one is picked up drunk jaywalking , then tossed into the Tent city , and the treatment of Joe's officer ( remember alot of other human beings have died in that jail system of Joe's , and cost the tax payers greatly for cases settled over such . lookup the name SCOTT NORBERG that says much alone ) .this bad system of Joe's is to break prisoners , even that drunk Jaywalker would gladly plea to anything they tossed infront of him . only to go to a C.C.A. prison or another corperate pen . only to get out of them tents and the horrid treatment bestowed upon the prisoners .
even Sal Reza was standing accross a street when joe's officers grab him , then they tried to find a charge later . only the case was dropped as it was a vindicitive action by Joe .
Denise, you are totally correct, and please don't think I'm defending Arpaio or Thomas! Both need to be held accountable for their excessive abuse of power and the outright murderous conditions they've placed people into.
During Arpaio's reign, he's cost the taxpayers close to $50million in lawsuit settlements to date, and he's currently facing mediation in other ones totalling another $48million. And there are still more lawsuits to be dealt with. There's also approximately 40,000 felony warrants unserved by the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office, but he's still out there doing his sweeps to check papers on buger flippers and people mowing lawns.
I suspect there will be accountability with at least one of the grand jury investigations going on, but don't expect anything to happen until after Nov.
I merely wanted to point out that the private prison system ties and background dealing has much to do with SB1070, because, as you say, this law has nothing to do with border security. I also think it has something to do with purging the voter rolls of hispanic surnames before the election. Expect that to happen probably in late Sept or early Oct. Time will tell if I'm correct on this.
I thought it enlightening that Estrada said that the bigwigs in Maricopa county are the ones making the fuss and they aren't even at the border.
Bill wollfe's dad is charming. Now we know where Bill gets his charm. also, I guess you guys didn't have to pay for a hotel. No wonder it was a cheap field trip.
I, too, watched your show yesterday. My impression was that it was not up to your usual standards for non-biased reporting. Like it or not, this is a very serious situation, getting worse daily. On Sunday, Aug 5 the LA Times has several in-depth articles you should read. One reporter was in volved in at least 2 of them....Tracy Wilkinson [wilkinson@latimes.com]. Here's a quote from Felipe Calderone in one...."Their [the drug cartels] business is no longer just the traffic of drugs. Their business is to dominate everyone else. This criminal behavior is what has changed and become a defiance to the state, an attempt to replace the state." That, clearly, is a definition of civil war. If Mexico were any other country, we would have Hillary Clinton calling for UN peacekeeping troups. Their war may not have spilled over into a bar in a fancy hotel in Tuscon, any more than invaded Rodeo Drive or Atherton. But cartel activitiy is evident in nearly every American city, some more than others.
For a bit of geekiness, you should do a drive by of the aircraft graveyard outside Tucson. It's truly awesome... it's even cool looking at it from Google Earth. :)
For news you won't get on the right wing Maddow Show, go to: www.howdyland.com and meet Stanley Douglas with News From The Great Re-Depression. Created by the co-creator of the Onion Radio News-- Moi.
Will you be posting the video of Bill's speech and/or video of the crowd after 5:45pm (when it was at its biggest) to show just how HUGE the crowd was?
Thanks again for throwing us this little party - it was great!
I'm uploading it now -- I tried posting it from the plane today and had total laptop battery fail.
thanks!
Happy you had a good time Carie. I would have been there but even transportation becomes a issue when your unemployed. Now I am jealous.
evans - it was rad. you should have hitch-hiked or stolen a donkey or something. definitely worth being there.
hey, what kind of phone do you have? i got a Rachel Maddow Show iphone cover, but of course, it doesn't fit on my G1.
A droid.
haha. yeah all they had were iphone covers. oh well.
Rachel - you can't go to Tucson and not do a complete story on RANDY PARRAZ. Randy is an amazing candidate for the US Senate and he and the people of Arizona could use your help in retiring John McCain. Give Randy some air time!!!!!!!
Love your show.
i second that !!! yes please give Randy some air time .. he too has been a direct victum from Joe Arpiao . and is one of the best hopes of ridding us all from McSame !!! this man can tell alot from a first point account oft he happenings here in Az . lets get him on the air , and his voice ringing out to all to hear ofthe issues that haunt this land.
Here in CA we have had several reports of boats landing with loads of illegals in various places: On Catalina Island, Camp Pendleton/San Onofre Neuclear facility, Laguna Beach, various other beaches....now today I see a report of two who attempted entry into Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. What's next? Up the Potomac?
links please, BB?
I don't have all the specific dates, etc. But these incidents occur regularly and are reported in the Orange County Register and the LA Times. Google Rep. Dana Rohrbacher Catalina is in his district and he recently visited Avalon where the depuity counsel from the LA counselate had set up shop in a Catholic church to dispense "matricula counselor" cards to illegals waiting to board boats to Laguna Beach, where there is a city sponsored day laborer center.
BBnewhound of course you don't have dates to back up your claims.
Bill - please resend that photo! I didn't get it. wahhhh!

Come to Oregon! Eugene or Portland. Plenty of places could host you.
My family has been in southern Arizona since 1875 ranching and mining. I am currently living in southern Mexico. Yes the border needs better protection and illegal immigration needs controled but the fence and fighting hispanics wont do the job. The US and Mexico need to work together to tighten the border once the border is controlled Mexico can gain a better position in their war on drugs. A good work and visitor visa system needs to be established that is for all people not just educated and elite. The new system could change some of the rules that now cause us problems. That bunch of politicians we have in Phoenix are just as bad as the ones we have in Washington, some how common sense got up and walked away.
Come to Madison Wis I promise we can fill a place up. We love TRMS out here!
Ah, Mad City on the isthmus. We used to call Madison the Berkeley of the Midwest. Rachel and Air America were on the road in Madison a few years back and their live show was great.
More photos and a brief YouTube video from the event can be found on my blog: http://outmavarin.blogspot.com/2010/08/weekend-assignment-330-baja-arizona.html
I'd also like to second Joe B's comment. Unlike him I've only been here 24 years, but it's clear to me that a third of the state's population (native, legal and undocumented) is being targeted by bigots and fear-mongers on the basis of ethnicity. It's a massive, counterproductive, unAmerican distraction from actual law enforcement against actual criminals.
Thanks for all you do, Bill and Laura and TRMS!
So according to the Rachel Maddow show, There is No Illegal Immigration Problem" This is based on one sheriff and a few drunken bar patrons, . You have already determined that only alter boys and nuns cross the border everyday and they only come here to do good and help Americans. That the scores of Americans killed each year as a result of contact with Illegalo Aliens is all made up by mean old conservative whiteys (who you have already charged as racists and bigots). If it wasnt so important for the future of our country, Id say what the hell, lets do it rachels way and open the flood gates and let millions more in fact everyone in the world thats wants to come to America should be allowed to come here. I know Dr Maddow has mucho education, dclearly she is not familiar with the study of scarce resources. I think they call it Economics? But wait, resources arent scarce in America we have plenty, come one, come all. What anti-American hogwash.
I think that's not the point at all - there IS an immigration problem, but it's not exactly as characterized by the noisemaking politicians in Maricopa County, and it's not a problem that can be dealt with the way we're going about it now.
The problem is that average folks who want to come here for "The American Dream" - for political, religious freedoms, for better opportunity for their families, have NO LEGAL MEANS by which to come here. Unless they're sponsored by an employer or they're a proven super-genius with publications the US Gov't deems "useful", they're out of luck. Even for those who meet the complicated requirements for legal entry, the road to even getting a visa is ridiculously long - ICE is JUST NOW processing visa / green card applications from 1994. That's a 16-year wait. No wonder people, in desperation, try to come over illegally.
But it's not the average-joe-looking-for-work immigrants who are causing the violence and increase in crime - it's the drug smugglers and human smugglers, gangs and cartels fighting each other over territory, etc. We've already got massive numbers of Border Patrol and National Guard on the border, we've got motion sensors and infrared cameras and helicopters and drones, but that's not working. We're fighting the symptoms, but not the causes.
If there was comprehensive immigration reform, creating a legal path for average folks looking for American opportunity to enter the country, obtain work permits and residency, that would start to address the problems with human smuggling...
To deal with the cartels and drug smugglers, we need to do more than just build fences or man the gaps... we need to address the problem of US weapon exports to Mexican cartels (just preventing guns bought in the US from entering Mexico would deal a sharp blow to the cartels).
We can't stop the drug trade until we deal not just with the supply side, but with the demand. No matter what you think of California's current debate on the legalization, regulation, and taxation of marijuana, the legal availability of US-grown marijuana would be seriously bad for business for the cartels... Remember how the repeal of Prohibition destroyed the speakeasy business.
Yes, the US is currently in the middle of a recession, with high unemployment, but that pales in comparison to the economies of the third-world nations immigrants seek to escape. Immigration isn't the "cause" of the recession and immigrants aren't "stealing our jobs" - the irrational belief in trickle-down economics (tax cuts for the rich will help create jobs? uh, i think not) and congressional fear of New-Deal style deficit spending (yet again, a failure to understand the difference between micro- and macro- economics) are hurting us more.
We don't have scarce resources. My partner & I had to downsize our home and cut back on everything when he got laid off, but just walking across the border in Nogales (on the way to get a root canal at the only dentist we could afford - the Mexican dentist), which is, in comparison to many other towns / regions in Mexico, relatively affluent, reveals the true meaning of "scarce resources."
Things may suck economically right now in comparison to a few years ago, but the US is still one of the best damned places to live in the world. Being proud of American opportunity and being aware of why so many people want to come here is by no means "anti-American."
Well said, carie.
Economics, like love, is not a zero-sum game. The net effect of immigration tends to be positive due to increased purchase of goods and services, the payment of sales taxes, and even the payment of payroll taxes. Think about it: in order to work in this country, you need a social security number. If you use a phony one, your SS and Medicare and withholding go to the government, but because it's not a real SS number you can never claim benefits on it.
When we first came to Arizona in 1986, we bought a humor book called Arizona 101. One of the things in that book that stuck with me was the claim that "Most Arizonans believe the border should have been closed the day after they arrived." People used to move here in droves for the warm weather, clean air (not any more) and natural beauty, but as the state fills up people resent all those additional cars on the road and lines at the bank or whatever. The same thing is largely true of this country, and has been for generations. Each wave of immigrants to the Land of Opportunity was resented and vilified by the groups that were already here. Yet the Irish, Italians, Germans, Chinese, and so on contributed greatly to the country's success - and so does the Hispanic community. There is no inherent difference in virtue, worthiness or basic human rights and dignity between someone who wants to come to America now, from whatever country, and someone who wanted to do so in 1870, 1910, 1945, or 1995. "Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor - unless of course your skin is darker than mine, because it means you're here to sell drugs or steal my job." That's not how it works!
JLeon-1895344 f you actually did your research and not go off assumptions and propaganda emails you would be aware that Democrats and liberals are not fighting for open boarders. They are fighting for reform of the system that is riddled with red tape and ineffective immigration procedures just like republicans are. The difference is the way in which each group wants to solve the issue of immigration. Most of the news on immigration is put out there is flat out false. People assume crime is rising because of immigration. In arizona crime is significantly down. Deportations of illegal immigrants is up. The hiring of illegal immigrants is being reduced due to better enforcement and online verification of employees. Is the problem solved? No, however it is not what the republican and tea party people would lead you to believe. Every election cycle the republican party brings up immigration and uses it to scare the American people into voting for them. When in reality just like promises to repeal the 14th amendment are no more than political posturing by a party that sense it's inception has used fear and religion to draw supporters.
Everyone agrees more needs to be done for immigration reform but things like releasing the 14th amendment, and racial profiling are not the solution. It has been proven that racial profiling is no more effective than random screenings and they do not alienate and divide our country. As long as there is profit to be made and extremely poor people willing to take great risk drug smugglers will continue to stay in business. If you destroy one supplier another simply takes his place.
Also it does not matter if you think racial profiling is racist or not the fact will remain that millions of people considerate to be discrimination and therefor it will be a problem. You can spout thousands of reasons why you are not racist yet support profiling but the fact is if the populace feels it is offensive it is period. Why can't we just get a national biometric ID it would be a very cheep and effective solution to most of these issues as long as everyone is required to have it.
But people a-pose that because you would have to give your fingerprints to the government and that would be an invasion of privacy. BS, it would be a small price to pay that is much smaller than the millions of tax dollars we pay to be used on less effective solutions.
If all the illegal immigrants went home today and we don't have a good immigration plan 1 million Americans will be out of work, businesses will be closing and the US government will belossing over 1 billion in tax dollars. The drain on our system is not the illegal aliens, it is ourselves. Our not for profit industries and welfare systems are draining the tax revenues that are dirived from an ever smaller middle class tax base. I am not against fixing the borders and immigration it needs done, but you better be smart about it or as far as economicl woes, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Carie in AZ - right on!!
Carie, I enjoyed reading your post and thank you for your civility. I feel sorry for people living in 3rd world countries I kind of know how it is, I lived in Louisiana once. But the truth is we all deal with scacity everyday. Your personal resources are limited, mine are too, I live in Miami, and Miami's resources or limited. LA, NY, Chicago. City and country budgets are strained across america. County hospitals are in the red, services are being cut affecting poor Americans, I do not see how you think we have unlimited resources. This issue is much larger than todays recession. Recessions are a natural part of the business cycle. However, the long term effect of exporting billions of dollars (remittances) while using billions of dollars worth of services creates a deficit. This is a net loss for America. The positive effects of illegals paying taxes is questionable and pales in comparison to what would be paid if American citizens held those jobs. It sad that it takes so long to get a visa, but that is simply a function of scarcity. We cant afford to hire 1000 visa workers. So I hope you will reconsider and try to understand the problem from my perspective. Its kind of like Studio 54, everyone wanted to get in, but only a certain number could. Thats the reality.
Well I'm in Australia, so I'm thinking no visits anytime soon, but if you EVER head down here for a visit and I am not informed in advance I will be very, very annoyed.
Just so we are clear it doesn't have to be an official visit or anything, I'd be happy to stalk a personal holiday or join it, you know, whatever, your choice.
So... I'm going to be taking a holiday in NYC in the first full week of September, any chance of having a watch party in NYC then? No travel required for the staff so it'll be nice and cheap from that perspective ;o)
Yes I know I'm being really cheeky in suggesting this, but if you don't ask, you don't get, and I don't come over to the US that often, so the likelihood of my being able to join in future watch parties are limited by where I live!
Pretty please?
I second imogenfm's request.
