If you went to see Gasland in Pennsylvania, your name might now be on a watchlist compiled by the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security. The agency has reportedly been tracking people who are protesting drilling for natural gas -- or fracking -- in the giant Marcellus Shale formation. From the Centre Daily:
According to recently leaked documents, the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security has been tracking anti-gas drilling groups and their meetings — including a public screening of the film "Gasland," a documentary about the environmental hazards of natural gas drilling.
The office has included the information in its weekly intelligence bulletins sent to law enforcement agencies.
The bulletins are also sent to gas companies drilling in the Marcellus Shale.
State Homeland Security Director James Powers says he's worried about vandalism. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell says he's looking into it. Pro Publica posted the state's intelligence bulletin last week. Now the story's finally getting some legs.

Acid mine drainage looks positively benign in comparison.
This story needs SO much attention!! PLEASE, please please pick it up on the show Rachel!
This a nationwide disaster in the making and no one is really paying much attention until recently.
AR, PA, NY, WY, CO, TX, WV all desperately need a light shined on these cockroaches.
They come in and make all these promises and leave a wake of destruction in their path.
Bad wells, over taxed water resources, millions of gallons of carcinogens, hundreds of thousands of small Superfund sites scattered all over, ruined roads with no money to fix them, earthquakes, forced conversion of private land to corporate profit making use. The list goes on and on.
People out here are screaming for help and cannot get it from complicit state and federal government.
Story clipped...this is eerily similar to when the FBI under J.Edgard Hoover watched 'certain' Americans going about their lives...
Just took my students to West Virginia to learn about this. Rachel, you should do your show from there for a week! The mineral rights were long ago separated from the surface rights, so people have no say not only about the water contamination, but the noise and machinery on their now worthless (Surface) property. Not only that, but the MTR (Mountain Top Removal) is RAPING the land and the natural gas companies and mining companies (Massey) act like terrorists to those who oppose them and wont sell. Contact Wheeling Jesuit University's Appalachian Institute for tours and tell them you want to meet LARRY GIBSON!!!! Keep it up because the governments are in the pocket of the gas and mining companies there. They are dependent on outside help!
Please come to PA to witness the horrific damage done to the environment and the toxic air, water and land the people are forced to live in. We have no say about what is happening to our agricultural lands. It is turned into an industrial waste zone and we have no escape! Please help!
The EPA is holding public meetings in Binghamton, NY this week on hydro-fracking in natural gas drilling operations and its adverse impacts on the environment, particularly groundwater. Below links are some updates on the Monday meeting, where there were a number of anti-fracking protestors. The final meeting on Wednesday is expected to draw an even larger crowd.

I'd consider it an honor to be on this watchlist.
People, this is about your health and the health of your children! This is such an important issue. Don't allow corporate greed affect our future.
Check out the article by Vanity Fair about fracking in Pennsylvania. Just search Vanity Fair, fracking.
PA is a more rural state than many people realize. That article points out the very obvious problem that rural + wet climate = lots and lots of private wells. Disastrous.
And the government should be protecting the interests of the people, not corporate interests.
The gas industry is feeding misinformation and creating confusion just to make a few bucks.
Please read the following article from Vanity Fair

I've been upset about this method from the get-go. Another "clean Technology" my foot! I've seen gasland and everymember of congress should watch the film as well. This needs to stopped in it's tracks! And please don't hand me this carbon sequestation fiction either. Dare I mention mountain top removal?! When are we ging to tranform over to real renewables.....the sun, the wind and the water???? Mother Nature is hang by a thread!
ditto
It's about time! I live at the foot hills of the Poconos. The fork on the Delaware. Anything and everything gets washed away and comes through our water channels. I've seen the Delaware river not look natural, like it had oil or gas or something come down. It made the river a supernatural red.
In this area, we've had massive sink holes because of drilling.
I still don't understand why we have to tap into all of our finite natural resources till they're gone?
They can track me all they want! I'm just a Pennsylvania resident who loves this land and the people who live here with me.
Just be aware that those companies won't turn around and try to get the 'state' to pay for the clean up their mess...
PG&E here in CA (you know that gas explosion last week) wants the state and citizens to pay for the fire fighting clean up...yep. It's their fault, but they don't want to pay for it...typical of big business isn't it?...
Be careful and stay safe...
Silly citizens! What makes you think you have the right to interfere in the rights of benificent corporations that are trying to make your life better, (for a reasonable profit)? Don't you know that corporations are individuals, just like you, and they need love and understanding, not hurtful protests. Corporations love you, truly and deeply, and would never do anything to harm you or your family. Please stop listening to the cries of the communist, terrorist-loving, Alinsky-following traitors to this country, and know that corporations will always be there for you.
Wow, I think I just about exhausted my supply of sarcasm for the day!
We packed the room at Pittsburgh's City Council Hearing on Marcellus drilling. Everyone in the place was in favor of a ban on drilling within our city limits.
I gussied up, b/c I know Pennsylvania's Homeland Security is watching. Being a 57 yr. old law abiding, tax paying, voting citizen calling for my rights, you know, I still want to look good...
Please jump on this fracking crap. Drillers are everywhere and my goofy neighbors are standing there with their hands outs and a silly look on their face. No one has done enough research to know that all the money in the world can't fix what they do to your water, your land and your property value, not to mention the environment. Help us stop this!
Unlike BP or all the other oil producing companies which were regulated by MMS and had the same emergency action plans...there are NO federal regulations re fracking. That was one of the crowning achievements won by Dick Cheney and the energy companies. To be against the interests of energy companies is now the same as being against the gov't. Potentially treasonous. Another victory won by the previous administration. Criminals in office make criminals out of concerned citizens. Another reason why Republicans have absolutely no business having the keys back.
As a landowner, homeowner and resident of PA, who is surrounded by approximately 1,500 acres that is owned by two hunting clubs, and has been leased to Chesapeake for shale hydrofrac'ing, it is sickening to see any arm of law enforcement approach opposition to this type of high volume, slickwater, multistage, hydralic fracturing and horizontal drilling as a threat to national security. This type of gas mining activity is a grave and present danger to our country, not the opponents of this gas mining.
As a member of the Damascus Citizens for Sustainability steering committee, and as an outspoken writer in local newspapers, using my real name over a period of almost two and a half years, I now find myself described as a militant, activist, who is a potential threat.
Why is Homeland Security communicating to the industry as if it is a private security company, a la Blackwater? The Justice Department needs to look into these clowns who are putting out such memos.
I hope the media pursues this relentlessly, until a satisfactory response is given.
"the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security has been tracking anti-gas drilling groups and their meetings" It started with the "Patriot Act" and has been snowballing ever since. Welcome to Amerika.
I thought that the conservative mantra on this type of issue was,"If you are not doing anything wrong you don't have anything to worry about."
It is high time that the Patriot Act be repealed and the abuses of our Constitutional rights be revealed. Where are the neoconstitutionalist tea party folk standing on this issue? Oh yeah, that's right, they are just a bunch of hypocritical sheep carrying water for the same corporate interests that are fracking the rest of us.

Very scary! If Homeland Security decides it wants to know who's attending meetings of (place name of group here), I guess all they need is our sign-in sheet. So, I wonder, is DHS being picky about the groups they "follow", or is it just everyone? Is every single member of any TeaParty on the DHS "watchlist"? How about CODEPINK? What about the local book club? Silly me thought this ended with Bush, and another reason for me to question Obama's admin. Just when I want to trust Obama again, (after he ignored his base and campaign promises), something like this turns up. The "Patriot Act" is about the most unpatriotic bill passed by Congress in my lifetime (that I know of). How long must we live with these anti-Constitutional relics? I'm a law-abiding, taxpaying citizen who doesn't appreciate my tax dollars being spent spying on concerned Americans. Guess I'll be avoiding those "sign-in sheets" at any local meeting I ever attend again. Too bad.
The govenor has now terminated the contract with that firm. He called it a horrible mistake.
That's neo-conese for"If you're not making waves about big business raping us you've got nothing to worry about"
I think it should be obvious by now if we connect the dots, that Homeland Security isn't here to protect regular Americans from anything. Look at the Gulf--They use Critical Infrastructure Clause as an excuse to protect a corporate agenda. And you think it will be any different anywhere else?
Welcome to the age of the Military Petroleum Complex.
I was there at the Gasland screening.... and I was at the protest in Washington County and council meetings and around tables at resturants.....I am sure (they) know I was there....My friends were telling me at different protest and meetings they saw people taking pictures ....paranoid I think not......I have nothing to hide as Governor Rendell said last night....He said that we were standing on our" God given American Rights ".......I was "appalled" to learn i was an environmental extremist...Last night Governor Rendell said he was "appalled " to learn that the FBI and a firm in "Philadelphia" firm was targeting Protesters, gay and lesbian rallies, environmental groups and even supporters of more funding for education......Isn't that ironic...A "Philadelphia" firm .....I wonder how the Founding Fathers .....the big guys.....would feel about that !!!!!....Philadelphia Freedom....the Rebirth of America !!!
Here's a fun project for future natural gas protests. Get some friends together, look for people taking pictures, either jostle them and pick their wallets or confront them 3 to one and find out who they are working for. Later have come OTHER friends knock the camera out of their hand and trip over it and stomp it to little pieces. Oops, accident!
P.S ..My mother's maiden name is "Cicero" I include him in my list of relatives... The most popular Roman hero of the Founding Fathers was Cicero, the silver-tongued Roman orator. Cicero lived from approximately 106 B.C. to 43 B.C.John Adams, in his Defense of the Constitution, said of Cicero: “All of the ages of the world have not produced a greater statesman and philosopher united than Cicero…” First as a lawyer, then as a consul and senator, Cicero boldly defended the republic against the rise of dictators. Cicero delivered his greatest speeches in defense of the republic against the Catilinarian Conspiracy.
Again and again, Pennsylvania take steps to retain its reputation as the laughing-stock of the country. Just in case nobody's figured it out yet, those Texas gasbags are sittin' up there on the 57th floor of SomeBigPipeline Company just a'laughin' and poundin' the table at how them dumb crackers in Pennsylvania are trippin' over themselves to sell off their drilling rights for dirt! And our state government is too stupid to tax the frackers and raise enough revenue to provide for all the environmental remediation that will one day be necessary. NO NEW JOBS FOR PENNSYLVANIANS HERE EITHER -- all the new jobs are being filled by out-of-state frackers and truckers. Trucking companies are based out-of-state to avoid paying the Pennsylvania fees. Meanwhile our state government is paralyzed by its own ineptitude and penchant for political wrangling. "Welcome to Pennsylvania. We could thrive if we wanted to." Can I be designated a terrorist just for sharing my thoughts like our founding fathers did?
There has not been one account of vandalism against gas company equipment to date why would they suddenly be worried about it now. This is the gas companies trying to tell the Government that we are some kind of anarchist group. We don't have terrorist in this country we have criminals disguised as politicians and gas company executives that are doing terrorist jobs for them.
We do have left wing terrorists in this country, but they care more about disrupting medical research than protecting aquifers.
what the eff are you talking abot M-T?
