There is a TROUT under the deadwood log in this picture, next to the bridge piling. It is still there. Right now.
That's me on the left, my friend Chuck on the right, Jill McDonough's fishing pole tip visible in lower left.

If I'm ever lost in the woods I hope you find me, Rachel. And share the fish.
I'm pretty sure I've had that dream at least twice....
Hah!
You're not throwing puppies, are you?
Dear Dr. Maddow,
I do personal computing and weblogging and such in part because I have never been an outdoor person -- I was a very poor Boy Scout in terms of woodcraft and camping and such, although great at memorizing the Scout Law, Oath, Motto, and Slogan.
I've known few people who are as computer and word-oriented as you are yet outdoorsy at the same time -- really, the only two currently are a friend who teaches paleontology at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and who is working on a long-term excavation of a dinosaur site in southeast Missouri (who I introduced to the Macintosh in 1985), and a Neo-Pagan priest and elder in Sonoma County, California.
Your enthusiasm for fishing and the outdoors, cocktails, words, and politics all at once are rare. I have to say that I admire your multiple and multi-tasking abilities.
Next year in Luna City,
David K. M. Klaus
Hopefully you won't come across any headless bodies in the brush.
I realize that it's the reflection of water off the lens, but the white spot above Maddow's head makes it look like she's wearing a white army cadet hat lol. Also her shirt looks like it has flowers on it. I've decided we should call her Lilly Maddow from now on /nod
Flowers?
That's what it looks like. That or camo. What do you see?
Looks like Maddow's ubiquitous brown hoodie to me. I can't quite make out the hood, but the pattern appears so.
BTW, who wears white pants to go fishing?
(The colors are so off in the image it's hard to tell the true color of anything.)
The shirt she's wearing is multi-colored. Her iconic hoodie is solid brown. Whatever she's wearing in that picture isn't that sweatshirt unless it's camera trickery (which it could be). Although now I'm pouting because I was really excited about the lilly maddow thing :D Actually you mentioning the color issue- it's possible that those are jeans and that's just how off the color is.
Actually the "iconic hoodie"appears to have a muted pattern, see photo here. However, I agree the "flowered" top in the above photo is not likely to be ye olde hoodie.
Oh it does. I never saw a picture that close up. But it still doesn't seem like it's that hoodie. I am sticking with "Lilly Maddow" until further clarification (darnit!)
Aye, Lily Maddow it is.
My ego and I thank you mightbe :D
Me thinks that's a camoflage pattern on her hoodie.
Still not sure what is on her head, don't believe it is a relection off the lens Mickey. It could be a halo! Or Rachel is now exposed for wearing a hat of tinfoil!
We adore our nerd. Note no fishing pole in her hand.
And that is because she can catch them with her bare hands!!!
love the sepia tone, looks like an old pic!
Can barely make out the trout.
Brown? Rainbow? Brook? Cutthroat? Do tell!
Man I haven't gone fishing in years, a decade at least. Why I don't, is beyond me. I live in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, about 5 minutes from a lake. Fail. Thanks for reminding me I need to get some gear and get my ass out there and fish!
I wish that my family who I fish with would catch fish like that, never mind me hooking one big enough to make a meal for myself or another.
Nice job of supervising, Rachel! You could have been a construction worker!
Jill McDonough's piece Accident, Mass. Ave. is evocative, touching.
i love the way the pic looks like it was taken in 1971. you know, the color is all weird and everyone is wearing sneakers.
My thoughts exactly. Interesting lighting and colors.
Clearly, Rachel is trying to stun the trout with her mind while Jill goes in with a net. :)
What kind of camera and film was this taken on?
looks gorgeous out there..really inviting...ruggedly beautiful just like Rachel. :D
I hope you didn't catch any feet or running shoes!
Rachel, Blow on that photo and keep waving it back and forth, its not ready yet.
Rachel, we just got home from an all day fishing trip on the Red River above Taos, New Mexico....we left a whole lotta trout in the river too. It doesn't get much better than this, eh?
I have to echo David K.M. Klaus' email about your multi-faceted excellentness. I am a professional singer (classical) and professor of music, and that's enough to keep me feeling on the edge of doing too much and not having enough time to pursue other endeavors. My brain feels pretty full on most days.
I know you have a great partner. I'd be lost without my husband, for his support, his help, his own excellentness, and his sense of humor.
I'm just wondering something: have you secretly figured out a way to fit more than 24 hours in a day? And if so, will you share? And if not...damn...I am not worthy to clean your bootstraps (or waders, or whatever!)
So glad you keep me in the loop and with such aplomb. Big Fan. Huge.

Wow! That must be a pretty old Trout. :D
Nice way to spend a weekend.
I just survived a 2 hour slide show about the stocking history of a sweet little trout stream near Madison Wisconsin at my local TU chapter meeting. I was reminded, repeatedly, of how much more fun fishing is than talking about fishing. And yet, TU, including my chapter, has saved and rehabbed a LOT of lovely trout water around the world. But really, fishing with Rachel? That would not suck.
rachel is THE only person i would consider going fishing with. fishing's boring,But ohhh, the conversations we could HAVE!
Seeking verification on the status of trout in question. Is trout stuck in shallows and unable to reach open water? Is trout Republican and unwilling to seek open water? Is trout a tea bagger who does not believe in the existence of open water? This is maddening ~ I really need to know!
Really? It looks like it was taken on Anscocolor in 1955. I think I see my grandfather in there somewhere!
The picture taker most likely has an iPhone and is using the App Hipstamatic (or one similar). It's an app that allows you to take photos with all sorts of different vintage looks.
