This week we talked to the owner of gun shop in Las Vegas who supports Tea Party Republican Sharron Angle for Senate. He's big on Second Amendment rights, and Sharron Angle really loves that particular corner of the Constitution.
Afterward, someone wrote on our blog something like, yeah, right, of course. White gun shop owner practically equals Sharron Angle supporter. Right?
Not necessarily. While we were in Las Vegas, I had a moment to myself by the side of the road with the tape from our Jon Ralston interview. While waiting for Bill Wolff to pick me up, I wandered into an army surplus store on the corner. And yes, I was expecting the same thing you might, that I'd find a supporter for Sharron Angle -- someone into her "us vs. them" immigration ads and at least tolerant of her Second Amendment remedies. You know they love her in the army surplus store, right?
Conventional wisdom, meet Prosper Mintz, owner of Mad Man Army Surplus, lover of the Second Amendment, voter for Harry Reid. "I'm going to vote for Reid because I believe Angle's racist against Latin people," Mintz told me. One vote's not much of a consequence for racist campaigning, and yet.

If there's one, there are others. Thanks, Rachel, for helping to dispel a left-wing stereotype about "gun toters" (and one I confess to having myself).
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Taking guns away will only leave criminals with guns.
Vote in November!
Good grief! Is that tired old saw the best you can come up with- after all these years??
How's this one:
No right exists in isolation. The framers of our constitutional form of government founded it upon an active citizenry partaking of both the rights and of the responsibilities of the ballot box, the jury box, the soap box and the cartridge box. Each of these, in certain aspects, assumes a distinct form from the others, and at the same time, each of these prove to be strongly interactive with the others.
As much as we might like--for "safety" or "homeland security" or "national defense," or "the war on drugs" or "the war on terror", or for any other cause--to erode any part of this four-part foundation upon which our (fading, fraying) democratic republic government rests, we can't... we can't, that is, if we intend to remain free of tyranny.
Tired enough a saw for you?
And yet, and yet to stereotype: Notice the man's last name, Mintz. He's of Jewish origin at least. Notice that according to the new polls, while the Catholics are leaving the Democrat fold, the Jews are remaining pretty steady. I'm sure there are other, non-Jewish gun owners who are voting for Reid, but, unfortunately, not enough to keep Angle from winning.
I couldn't have said it better than susanb. My views on gun rights and Mr. Mintz' differ somewhat, I am sure, but it is important to recognize that not all 2nd Amendment supporters are forming militias.
It's important to remember that we're NOT single issue voters, nor do we pick and choose which Amendments of the Constitution we support (or not). We have chosen to govern by this set of laws and by the method of amending them through the election of a representative legislature. Those in favor of a liberal interpretation of the 2nd Amendment have so far been among the majority of our representatives of both parties when that particular issue comes up for legislation.
That's how it works, boys and girls. That's what it means to have "planks" in a "party platform." That's why it's important to pay attention to the pre-election positioning and the policy statements...even if they sound boring. And that's why an educated electorate is so important. Turn off FOX and turn on MSNBC!
Oh.....YES!!!
Nice to see that her own ads are working against her. Hopefully sane people will come to the same conclusion.
I'm hoping she's really done herself in with her own mouth. Sadly they show her polling ahead of Reid still, although still within the margin of error. I voted on the 19th and I voted for both Harry and Rory Reid.
Thank you Rachel for your tireless efforts to find the truth buried in mountains of propaganda. I never miss a show because I know I can count on you to give me a fair view of the facts!<\p>
Amen brother Mintz.
Fingers crossed that this sort of thing has propagated amongst would-be Angle voters.
It has, many people in Nevada are thoughtful people who make their decisions based on the truth not the drivel shovelled at them by the Angle camp.
Ortorongo, I sincerely hope you have many, many compatriots in Nevada.
SusanB - there are a LOT of us far-left liberal gun-toters. I'm another one.
One of the MANY differences between us and the nutwingers is they only cherish the Second Amendment. We, on the other hand, cherish the entire Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment included.
A few of them make a big show of open carry. That's their right (and ours, too). We haven't said anything about how many of us are carrying concealed. That's our right (Mona Lisa smile emoticon here). That thought hasn't occurred to them while they think they're intimidating us.
Awesome. :)
wow. i was just thinking when rachel was doing the other gun shop owner interview in nevada, how second amender's are so narrow minded on this one issue.
but this guy is a complete breath of fresh air, stunning. thanks for posting this, it slightly restores my confidence in humanity again.
Wow - just when I thought the most hate-filled, stupid person on the planet had posted the most ignorant comment of all time, you come along and make the other idiots look smart.
Wow - just when I thought the most hate-filled, stupid person on the planet had posted the most ignorant comment of all time, you come along and make the other idiots look smart.
Let this be a reminder to us all the dangers of prejudging.
Exactly, Jim. Seeing any group as a monolith is wrong.
Mike, Spewing hatred and name-calling is so Republican and so 7th grader-ish. You just embarrass yourself. R. Maddow doesn't need or expect your approval. She's just doing her job - enlightening Americans as to the REAL agendas of these polititians.
Thank you Rachel Maddow to calling out the real truth on these candidates and for searching out thoughtful, smart voters!
I'm a gun owning social liberal but a little more conservative on the fiscal side.I agree whole heartedly with the gentleman in the video. I don't understand what the Angle's of this world are afraid of?
Me too: Gun owner, hunter and progressive.
One thing I've learnt is that people rarely conform to stereotype. And what a dull world it would be if they did.
Good job! All you really have to do is listen to the kind of people who support people like Angle and you get a good sense of the mentality, morals and motives of the "Tea Party". Tough times tend to flush out the racist, homophobic bigots from their dark little parents basement. The reality is that the so called Tea Party is just the same hysterical idiots who supported Bush even after every sane person jumped ship, the people funding it are the usual suspects of reactionary billionaires and the organizers are, surprise, Karl Rove and his merry band of liars. Failure breeds desperation, desperation feeds hysteria and hysteria releases the inner demons of racism, xenophobia, bigotry and a certain detachment from reality that is evident during this campaign season in the noise coming from the Right. You know things are bad when even some of the smarter Republicans are supporting idiots like Angle and Christine O'Donnell and Michele Bachman. When you thought that Palin was the bottom of the barrel the barrel just got deeper, and nastier.
Thanks George you summed it up,well said.
Pretty desparate when you do a whole blog on one voter! I guess you guys are digging deep now! Most of the democrat incumbents don't even have the integrity to stand up for their voting record. Many are distancing themselves from the ideals that just a few months ago, they were ramming down our throats! The back peddling is amazing! Amazingly late!
I know, I know, EVERYONE ELSE is an idiot! I say, IDIOTS UNITE!
Have you seen how much back peddling Sharron Angle has done, Katy? She's the f'ing queen of riding that bike backwards. She has had to "walk back" or "soften" her stances on just about everything so that way the moderate right would even consider voting for her. It's telling when life long republicans are APOLOGIZING for her. Sadly though there are enough people in Nevada who may just be dumb enough to place a vote for Angle just to see Reid taken out. If they succeed this state is in deep sh*t.
@ Katy: One blog post is hardly the whole blog; although, the sentiments expressed by Mr. Mintz are certainly in keeping with the fact-based truths promoted by the whole blog.
You do that, Katy.
Last I checked, Nevada isn't doing so great. High unemployment and foreclosures. You guys are so gullible!! Ried is a politician and he says all the things you want to hear, but has he delievered? NO! None of us totally agree with everything, every politician has to say. But with Nevada currently holding such great power, why are you guys in such deep Sh*T!
By the way, what is telling is that no Democrat wants the President standing next to him. No one wants to take responsibility for their own votes. I guess taking their que from Obama, they don't wanst to accept responsibility for their actions! Typical Democrats!
According to Obama, conserative are the ENEMY! Talk about cuokoo!
Waste you vote if it suits you....
Kathy, Nevada's not doing great, but that's not due to anything Harry Reid has done. Reid helped push through the stimulus package that cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans, giving individuals 400 dollars more in their paychecks over the year and 800 for married couples. Under his leadership the middle class is seeing its lowest taxes since the 30s. What's not being reported is the fact that most of the stimulus package went to tax CUTS. It also went to extend unemployment benefits for people who are struggling to find a job and to keep police and teachers on the job. That's what Reid has done.
He's also helped average americans struggling with the costs of health care. Now you can't be denied insurance for a pre-existing condition.
If Nevada is in trouble, you need to put the blame on people like Sharon Angle who supports the Republican party line and wants to cut taxes for the wealthy, even though historically that has never resulted in more jobs.
The Republican supported tax break for the less than 2 percent of Americans that make more than 250,000 a year would add billions to the deficit. If Nevada economy sucks, don't put the blame on people fighting to fix it.
Don't blame the Democrats! It is great to have $34.00 in my pocket every month! What a break! That ought to stimulate the economy! Not even a tank of gas! THANKS OBAMA! THANKS PELOSI AND REID.
Katy -
Perhaps if you drove a more fuel-efficient vehicle $34 would go farther. For me personally $34 pays for 1 and 1/2 tanks of gas.
Now its my fault! You want to control what kind of car I drive? I didn't say how long that tank lasted me Dutchie. Or what kind of car I drive. And, its a relatively small, fuel efficient car. But it doesn't fill my car up!! Perhaps my tank is bigger than yours!
But, I'm not surprised at your comment. Glad YOUR happy with the extra $34.00. Get ready to pay it back in insurance premiums, unless of course you are just freeloading....
I'll thank you to not paint me with your "freeloading" brush; insults will get you nowhere. My health insurance is increasing by $1 per month next year, for the exact same coverage I have this year.
I have no interest in controlling anything about you, Katy. Perhaps you are projecting your view onto my statement.
What is being lost in the argument about Nevada is the fact that Reid shouldn't even have a chance this election. Hyperbole and insults aside, the fact that this is a competitive race is a testament to how out of the norm Sharron Angle is.
I think Harry Reid should use your video and make it a campaign ad in the last couple of days. Just as it is, and on the very end, say, "I'm Harry Reid and I approve this message".
There is hope. Another Angle voter back from the brink.
I do not believe that most of the people today understands our government, we have gotten so caught up in technology, that we no longer think for our self we relies on talk shows that gives us their opinions, not facts and we acceptit as gospel, what happened the networks that gives facts and let you decide for your self, Remember Walter Cronkite's news ending [and thats the way it is on this xx xx]
It like the politicians telling us that you can't trust the government, It seems to escape the fact that they are the government that they are telling you not to trust so If they are telling you not to trust the government,do that mean that they are not to be trusted? are we that for removed that we can't see this. Most of the people have no idea of what is in the constitution, so we relies on the politicians to tell us what is in it.
As an Aussie that watches American Politics with a combination of Envy, confusion and sometimes as spot of horror, the whole second Amendment thing seems a bit alien and wierd too me. But thats OK, different countries have different values, and I guess a lot of the US really does feel guns and freedom are tied together.
But regardless, I like this brother. He's standing up for Latino folks who've been copping it hard lately, and I think he should be proud to take an unconventional view that fits his moral compass, rather than just saying "Well Im not comfortable with how my friends and customers are being treated by this racism, but ... I must support the traditional party associated with gun rights.
Congratulations Mr Mintz, guys like you are what I like about America, and you reflect well on your Nation in the eyes of us internationals.
As Second Amendment, gun owner, middle of the road person, it's nice to finally hear someone with sense being interviewed in this toxic election cycle on candidates like Susan Angle.
Oh, Rachel... you said that you keep dreaming the Christine O'Donnell gets elected to the U.S. Senate. Well, take a look at this headline just in from CNN, entitled "Poll Shows Surge for O'Donnell in Delaware". Rachel, what HAVE you done?????http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/10/29/poll-shows-surge-for-odonnell-in-delaware/#more-131718
Nightmare, not dream folks.Let this woman fade back into the obscure cracker box from which she emerged (Christine).
Fantastic!!!!
This is definitely repudiation (or is that refudiation) of the Chicago-style politics in Washington. Let's get the organized-democratic crime family out of Washington!
Hopefully it wil be clear with the election results, that Pelosi and Obama's arm twisting won't work!
Go Christine!
Chicago-style politics in DC??
Don't you remember that Chicaago arrived 18 mo ago?
The true 'crime family' has been there for decades..
The country is more divided than ever. DId you know that we (conservatives) are your ENEMY! Geez....
I am married to a democrat and we seem to be just fine. We don't consider each other enemies, by the way.! That is the most inflammatory statement by Obama in a whiel
You keep touting this conservatives are the enemy line, but Obama didn't say that. You are listening to the Beck spin on the comment, and not the comment in its entirety. He was commenting about how it would be fooling for Latinos to sit on the sidelines out of anger that Obama hasn't done enough on immigration. It is very clear that the Republicans are the enemy of immigration reform and a path to citizenship, that is well documented by their own statements.
I have seen several Republicans say that Obama is a Marxist, a socialist, like Hitler, like Hugo Chavez, a gangster, a thug, that Obama is intentionally ruining the country, that Obama is worse than Al Qaeda, and the GOP leaders have said several times that their whole goal is for Obama to be a one term president. Your side has to parse words and infer that he is saying the same thing about them, but the difference is that they are stretching the context.
http://thinkprogress.org/2010/11/01/boehner-enemy-hypocrisy/
A nice list of the pleasant things that the Republicans have called Obama. This is so funny, as it seems to me the GOP can dish it out but they can't take it.
America definately belongs to all people of different race and faith. The argument of race was temporarily conquered when President Obama won the White House. Yet there are those hiding in the wings, pitch forks and baited breath, stabbing desperately to take back the White House. Republicans they are called. And they vote against so many policy ideas and bill proposals that it is no wonder that the Democrats appear to be failing to make progress- because half of Congress tagged Republican are preventing change. Political infighting should just stop and the ideas should be combined and agreed upon, not voted out by the opposition just because they don't hold a majority in Congress or the Senate.
If a good idea is proposed in Congress then surely it should be implemented quickly rather than making the American public suffer from inaction. The U.S politicians looks so unstable, like a bunch of fifth graders arguing at lunch time having learnt enough conversation skills to do so...
What you don't understand is that politics is no longer about governing and making laws to help the country. It is about your side winning, nothing more. You watch, starting November 3rd both parties will begin their campaigning for the 2012 election. It is a non stop competition for the most seats, period.
Obama had an opportunity to bring together the races. But, he failed. First with his premature comment on the white police. Now he has resorted to going on latin radio stations and asking people to unite against "their enemies and support their friends"! Wow! This was the guy that was going to bring the country together! FAILURE!
And, Democrats had no problem passing Obamacare! So, apparenty they CAN pass anything they want, if they could all agree, but when you go against the majority of Americans, you suffer the political consequences afterward. That's the way it works!
The Democrats could have passed anything they wanted in the last two years. Instead of focusing on jobs, they focused on Obamacare and paying off unions and government employees with a stimulus bill. Obama has failed. Congress has failed. The Republicans had failed earlier. If they get in and continue the uncontrolled spending they'll fail again.
Vote in November!
You are kidding, right? Obama was the first to callout the white police officer withoug know the facts! Also, he went on a Latin radio station calling conserviates "their enemies".
What rock do you live under?
Cuokoo!
Katy, your posts only demonstrate the dangers of propaganda. A majority of Americans actually support health care reform. In fact, a substantial number feel the current law doesn't go far enough. Just because they don't feel the law goes far enough does not mean they are against it.
In an election, there are winners and losers. A clear majority of voters gave the President a mandate to fix health care in this country. Just because you didn't vote that way doesn't mean you aren't being listened to. It just means, in a democracy, not everyone gets 100 percent of what they want, 100 percent of the time.
You incorrectly say the stimlus bill "paid off unions and government workers." But 95 percent of Americans got a tax cut, putting an additional 400 in their pockets over the last year. Millions of unemployed got extended benefits and cheaper health care coverage. Those tax breaks had little to do with union involvement.
Your post also demonstrates the hypocrisy of the right. You blame the President for not "bringing races together" then cite his support of Dr. Gates over the white policeman that violated his Constitutional rights by arresting him in his home. But you ignore the fact the Constitution supports Gates over the cop. Then you label his administration a "failure" label health reform "Obamacare" and call supporters "cuckoo." You result to name calling, instead of putting forth any facts to support your charges. Just typical right-winged bullying in my opinion.
But this administration has successfully adverted the next great depression. It has successfully passed health care reform that gives millions more opptunities to keep their coverage and not be dropped by insurance companies for a pre-existing condition. They have successfully passed financial reform and taken steps that will prevent big banks from creating another financial meltdown.
Propanganda uses repetition and distortions to propell lies and convince otherwise rational people to believe the irrational. Your comments here just serve to illustrate why it should be illegal and emphasizes why it's important to vote this year. If extemists like Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnell make it into the Senate on a wave of misinformation it will be a real tragedy and a real threat to Democracy as we know it.
This whole election conservative wave is all about saying NO to health care and the overwheming deficit and economuy. I love it when the Demobrats take credit for something that cannot be proven..saving jobs, saving us from a Great Depression! Talk about propaganda!
Yes Americans voted for change, but got the bait and switch. No Democrats or Republicans just Americans...what a joke! And this very person is out on radio telling hispanics to vote against their "enemies" and vote for their "friends". I see that you didn't bother to address that one! It was pathetic!
And, you can't be serious that you would have opinions outlawed! Seriously hypocritical for someone on the left! And very dangerous to our freedoms!
Only a few days left to go. We will see what the people say and then you can tell me whether the majority of Americans belive in what the democratic Congress and Aministration are doing. I know, if they disagree it is only because they are stupid. (read that about a million times on these posts). And, I'm a name caller....
Nobel winning economist Peter Diamond on NPR:
"The first stimulus bill, by all quantitative estimates, produced a huge amount of additional employment," Diamond says. "But that stimulus bill has been extremely unpopular with the American public, even though in the eyes of economists it was a great success."
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130955806
I believe Diamond before I believe any Republican propaganda talking points.
All I have to do is look around me to see how helpful it has been! But, you go ahead and read a story on NPR's website if you makes you feel better.
Katy, you employ the ad hominem fallacy here. Why not explain why your understanding of economics is so much more valid than Dr. Diamond's, instead of making a thinly veiled criticism of the news outlet who provided the reporting on his perspective? Oh, you do not have an PhD in Economics from MIT too? You have misplaced your Nobel prize in Economics? Sorry, my bad.
If you haven't noticed, economists disagree! There was a time when M.Ds. thought that women should absolutely have hormone replacement therapy. Turns out that is not the case and in fact there are harmful side effects. Oh and the environmental experts that said we needed to use plastic instead of paper....turns out the plastic is just as bad, if not worse, than the paper!
I would say that for the most part, its all speculative, with a lot of different "theories" and variables in play. That is why there is not agreement by the so-called experts!
Economists Alan Blinder from Princeton and Mark Zandi from Moody's also concluded that the federal stimulus was responsible for "raising 2010 real GDP by about 3.4%, holding the unemployment rate about 1½ percentage points lower, and adding almost 2.7 million jobs to U.S. payrolls." They published a detailed account of their analysis so you can read and understand why they have concluded the same as Dr. Diamond and other economists.
http://www.economy.com/mark-zandi/documents/End-of-Great-Recession.pdf
Katy, don't worry about the facts getting in the way of your message...most Republicans don't. It is very clear that the stimulus bill helped save jobs, but that is a tough thing to quantify. It is obvious that there are some really good things in the health care bill, but you would rather demonize the whole thing and pretend that it would be better if insurance companies could drop you once you got sick.
I suggest you look at the facts about what the health care bill will do before you decry it as [fill in GOP talking point here].

Another stereotype busted: I am white, born in the South and still live there. own a pistol and a shotgun; however, I am a lifelong, tried and true, unapologetic yellow dog Big "D" Democrat. I am not as liberal as I once was, however, I am very progressive and more liberal than moderate. I was raised during segregation, but am not racist, I saw too much of Jim Crow. I was pro-Obama from the time he announced his candidacy. I thinkl he is one of the best presidents of the 20th or 21st centuries.
Marian, say it loud and say it proud my friend!
Marian you and I are cut from the same cloth. I think of the collective America not the me America. We all can do better if we are all given a chance to have a voice in this country. But unfortunately we are being silenced by the right and their agenda to make corporations our leaders.
What I'd like to know is, how much are each of these two dealers making off of gun sales directly or indirectly to the Mexican drug gangs. Hey, It's happening, and has been documented thoroughly. So how much do each of these two make, if anything, from supplying the drug gangs? Might be relevant.
Why did you have to take a great and positive message and try to drag it in the mud? This is something that should be lauded, not dismissed and attacked.
angeleno, let us know how you make out with your research on that subject. Might be relevant.
@angeleno: Interesting the way you say that it's "been documented thoroughly" but then offer no citation whatsoever to the "source" of these so-called facts.
FYI, many of the fans of TRMS are fans because of her relentless pursuit of the facts. You might do better at convincing us with a little evidence to back up your claims. Absent that, you sound like an Angle-esq fear monger.
I'd like to buy this man a beer.
