In tonight's segment when you showed a couple of NYT front pages, I thought I noticed a curious sub-headline. Did one of the headlines read something to the effect:
"Orgies Will Be Frowned Upon"...?
Or was I under the influence of too many Gatsbys?
I also noticed that headline....
I just added those in tonight's links list, but yes, you saw correctly:

That is a really fascinating time to browse the NYTimes archive. What it looks like to me is that there'd been so much demonizing of alcohol that there was a national fear that everyone would instantly fall into alcoholism and debauchery. I think the use of "orgy" in 1933 is a little different than how we think of it today but they (Americans back then) appear to have been sincere in their concern that no one would be able to control themselves without liquor laws to keep them restrained.
Yes, because all of us know that No-One had a drop to drink, all during prohibition's rule! *snark*
A brief quote to illustrate: "A Michigan State Police raid on Detroit's 'Deutsches Haus' once netted the mayor, the sheriff, and the local congressman."
I'll drink to that! ;-)
You could browse the 1920's NYT's archives... or have watched HBO's great "Boardwalk Empire" series. But doing that kind of homework is impressive! Hats off.
FANTASTIC! Thanks for putting cocktails on your show, Rachel. I'm even more happy to watch your show now.
Liberty is a classic, scratch-cocktail bar here in Seattle, and next time that you're in town, I hope that you stop by our nice ol' town.
Here's one for you, one of our custom drinks:
The Continental
2oz Plymouth Gin
.5oz St. Germain
.25oz Amaro Nonino
Stir ingredients in glass, pour into cocktail shell (martini glass) and garnish with a lemon twist.
Yum.
Thanks, Rachel!
Just saw his on the show and now I'm craving it like crazy!
Great drink Rachel! ... but come on, "The Snowball"... really? 'Cause it's easier to remember at your house?? ... It's been a long week, I know - great drink and great hysterical moment of unintended sexual innuendo.
Thanks for that @chomper, had to look it up.....
better advise my mother to change the cats name!
hahaha, I wouldn't tell my mother.
Ooh, "Snowball", Cock-Tail", even "Innuendo" - Talk Dirty to Us! ;-)
(it's 5 o'clock somewhere...I think)
I also didn't know the third meaning of snowball, when it comes to drinks a snowball is a cocktail made from advocaat and lemonade, not lemonade that is made using real lemons and is yellow, but a clear lemon flavoured carbonated drink similar to Sprite or 7-up.
To be honest, I had to look it up too...ewwwe
@chomper I thought the exact same thing. Oh boy.
hey Rachel! this drink does sound delicious... is it good in the blender, too, you think?? might have to try it that way since i don't have a good martini glass ;)
*Shake it until it hurts, then shake it some more....*

What brand creme de cacao was Rachel using?
Funny you should ask. I happen to have the production notes for the producer to set up the segment and they specifically call for Marie Brizard brand. I can't quite make out the label in the segment but the bottle shape is the same.
I Loved tonight show. It looks like a great drink. I got to pass for today got an allergy to alcohol. I breakout in spots. Have a Great Day.
Seriously, Rachel. You need to make a book of these drinks.
I totally agree! Plus (in addition to the mug...ahem, Will) TRMS shot glasses, shakers, glassware.
I highly doubt Rachel knew "The Snowball" was sexual. I mean, she's incapable of saying masturbate on TV for god's sake.
So is this supposed to make me want to move to Long Island and obsessively watch for Daisy's lights twinkling across the water in the evening?
It said "ORGIES ARE FROWNED ON". I wish Rachel had mentioned it. :)
Still laughing. i love celebrating the end of Prohibition w/ a Snowball or a Gatsby.
You go Girl!
Blessed Be!
This looks like a mixed drink I would actually drink.
Where is Kent?
Rachel has to have a friday cocktail hour like Keith has friday's with Thurber!
BTW, this looks like good use for that bottle of amaretto I got as a gift a few years ago and don't know what to do with.
I don't like your make-a-drink segments. Your viewers are tuned in to see politics, not this. I am a huge fan of your show but it is getting more and more off track and "cutsie".
I strongly disagree, no disrespect, but I don't think you are accurately speaking on behalf of all viewers. We get our fill of politics. I find it refreshing to go off track and have some laughs or oddball segments. That's what makes TRMS so freaking awesome! One second she could be talking about something totally serious, on topic for the day...and in the same show talk about something geeky or cocktails. That's why I love her. Her show is not just informative but it's also FUN. She's awesome when she's giving information about the day's news/politics, but I adore her just as much when she takes a huge detour towards something completely different.
That's just how it it is. I don't always enjoy the lighter segments--though I do enjoy the boozy ones--but they do provide some balance.
Ah, lighten up, grammie!
Yes, Laura. I agree 100%!
With all due respect....in the words of Winston Churchill:
"In my belief, you cannot deal with the most serious things in the world unless you also understand the most amusing"
I recommend you add a little amusement to your life, Grammie!
"A little nonsense now and then, cherished by the wisest men."
Ironies of Prohibition:
(Hey, aren't they supposed to be the Party of Limited Government Interference in peoples lives, and 'Personal Responsibility', opposed to the 'Nanny State'? Of course, Democrats aren't blameless, many of them also voted in favor of it, as did 2/3rds of the States, as required by the Constitution, for Amendments - Still, I was struck by the Irony and Hypocrisy!)
Prohibited making, selling, or importing alcohol...but Not Drinking It! ;-)
Thank Goodness it's Gone!
10am..just awoke..usually arise @ 5am..still see 'SNOWBALLS' when I close my eyes......umm good! Much better than my usual Peach Schnapps on the rocks by the fireplace!
Try this...............
Berryetto
2oz amaretto
8oz (MOL) frozen sliced strawberries in syrup, partially thawed
4oz heavy cream (I use 1/2 & 1/2)
In a blender combine all ingredients except whole berry; blend smooth. Pour into stemmed glass. Makes 2 servings.
OOPS...forgot the garnish with whole berry part!
Thank God we have people like Rachel to educate us on matters of alcoholic beverages. I think we're all going to need it in the near future.
The Gatsby or Snowball is next on my favorite drink list, I can feel it.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Can't wait to try this, but first need to buy some ingredients, and I'm going for the heavy cream. No need to think of calories now.
Dear Rachel,
you are a shining light in my life. i am surrounded by endless sea of political zombies who know nothing of the world around them. I wish i could sit down sometime and have a beer and shoot the @!$%# and talk politics with you. i am particularly interested in hearing your ideas on the development of an alarming obstructionist culture in congress that is escalating severely, relative to historical standards. I would also love to hear how you feel about if you think it is possible we will ever see change to our electorate college system or closed primaries? Both of which are grossly extorted by party loyalist tactics and a rivalry similar to sports. It is possible i am shooting myself in the foot by raising this topic, but it is one I wish i could hear your opinion on. I find your lucid debate of issues and specific, accessible explanations of your opinions quite refreshing, as a lighthouse amongst the sea of pseudo-political opinionated garbage. That is why i want to hear your opinions about these issues because they are issues i struggle with and find the most controversial. It would be invaluable to hear your input. Despite the significant population of peaceful Muslims, do you agree with the viewpoint that the mechanics of Islam is violent expansionism, based on a range of Islamic texts and the observation of its literal roots. Based on that opinion, how do you feel about the significance of documented deceitful tactics by "Primary Source" under the intention of instructing school children how to pray? Risking treading further into controversial waters i have to ask my next question. considering the questions above regarding Islam, how do we take on our own country's hypocritical struggle with church and state, and how is that contributing to the culture war's impact in the growth of the obstructionist culture in congress?
Thanks Rachel for your time i really hope you have happy holidays and i look forward to your show every night! you're such a positive impact in Politics in this country, keep doing what you are doing!
Rachel, you're just the best! I really wish you'd compile all your cocktail knowledge into a book, maybe offering some tips on what makes a nice food pairing with each drink, bits of trivia, etc. My mom is your absolute biggest fan, and I know she'd go crazy over something like that (as would a lot of others!)
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us each day, cocktail-related and otherwise. :)
