Pronouncing this a good day, President Obama signed the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell moments ago. "We are not a nation that says, 'Don't ask, don't tell,' " Mr. Obama told the audience. "We are a nation that says, 'Out of many, we are one.' "

I have read that it could take up to one year to implement the recision of the policy. What happens to gay and lesbian soldiers in the meantime? Will they really keep discharging people?
It's been more than an hour now and nothing seems to have collapsed! There have been no riots, our troops in Afghanistan still fight as they did yesterday. Great job, President Obama. Let's get START ratified next.
Dan Choi, and everyone else, should get their jobs back, without a lengthy application process; we need the translators alone, asap.
God bless the president, congress, and the people of the United States for doing the right thing!
Where has Dan Choi been during all of this? I thought he would be in the forefront of the celebration. Where is Dan??!
Harry Reid is probably thinking, "You owe me Mr. President!"
My partner was thrown out of the Army while she was deployed 2 1/2 years ago after 28 years of service. She did not tell or was asked it was a witch hunt. This week has been joyous as I am sure you can imagine for us.
A few things that I have not seen addressed with the injustice of DADT is the level of PTSD that was caused by being thrown out and having all your comrades turn against you. My partner is still dealing with the consequences of this. As the repeal goes forward there is also the struggle those of those who have been discharged on weather to go back in or not. And a lot of concerns still exist on how going back to the military will be impliminted.
I just want to bring a few things to light being that I see first hand some of the consequences from DADT and that it would be nice to address this so we can help those affected with the emotional concerns that go along with this. I hope we can address this because as thrilled as we are that DADT has been repealed it does not take away all the pain that has been inflicted. I hope we can help those like my partner heal from all the wounds.
Thank you for the opportunity to voice this. And it has been wonderful to see this happen and the great reporting!

How wonderful that Dan Choi was invited to the ceremony; this is truly a wonderful day. Next: dealing with DOJ's intolerable and unconscionable defense of DOMA
He is about making the poll ratings and no regards for others.......Why should the straight be impose or force to deal with gays soliciting their sexual orientation on others. When you enlist in the service as a female or male you are responsible for carrying out that designated task. The military various departments will set up strict guidelines to counteract this law....their goal is to serve and protect...and do not have time for babysitting gays....
Where are the republicans? Just 1.
Perhaps they are all afraid of a major Civil Rights being signed by Obama. Kudos to the Republicans that did step up though to do the right thing.
I had tears in my eyes watching this , this morning. What a wonderful day for our gay and lesbian service members ! I am extremely happy the president took the appropriate steps to make sure this was repealed the right way !
I loved the " in your face McCain" moment from President Obama when he said this will serve to make our military stronger !
A big thank you is due to our president, the senators who worked hard for this, to Sec. Gates, Adm. Mullen , and ALL of the gay and lesbian service members who fought hard for this. Yes, tis a good day.
“There will never be a full accounting of the heroism demonstrated by gay Americans in service to this country,” he said. “As the first generation to serve openly in our armed services, you will stand for all those who came before you, and you will serve as role models for all those who will come after you.” (via http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/12/obama-signs-dadt-repeal-into-law.php)
I suggest that the famous survey of active service members be conducted again with the change of "gay" to "Muslim" to see how they think that would affect combat effectiveness.
Yes, a very good, historic day! We are moving forward, slowly sometimes, painfully sometimes, but forward nonetheless! God Bless all our service men and women and thank-you for all you do!
Wonderful day for the United States! It is a tough slog sometimes but we usually get things right eventually!
Thank you, Mr. President.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy."

Dan Choi should get a signing pen
