The Rachel Maddow Show iPad app is now available for free in the iTunes app store.
The app consists of two main parts. The first is a video archive featuring all of the latest show clips archived by date, including Web extras like Bill Wolff's daily videos.
The second part of the app is a gateway to our collective viewing through Twitter (sorry I don't have a screen grab of that yet. I'll update here when I get one). So it includes the #Maddow channel as well as a more distilled version that is a channel of featured tweeters and also a highlights channel that includes the related links tweeted by @MaddowApp and tweets favorited during the show.
The app is also the launchpad for future MSNBC show apps, so eventually from the Maddow app you'll be able to access videos for Countdown, Ed, everything from Willie Geist in the wee hours to Lawrence's last word.
A bit more explanation of the @MaddowApp Twitter account after the jump...
The content on the Twitter side of the iPad app is largely controlled through the @MaddowApp account. If MaddowApp favorites your tweet, it'll show up in the highlights tab of the iPad app. The idea is that if you're watching the show after it has aired live on TV, like the next morning, you might not find the most relevant tweets in the #Maddow channel but you can at least look at the highlights to get a general sense of the audience reaction to the live broadcast.
On the subject of relevant tweets, we had a notion to feature the most avid Maddow tweeters in a separate channel. The problem we ran into is that Maddow tweeters talk about any number of other things when TRMS isn't on, which made the channel pretty noisy in the off hours. So instead we are growing a list of political tweeters who also tweet on the #Maddow hashtag during the show. If @MaddowApp is following you, your tweets are being featured in that list. I don't have a formal means of building the list, I just add one or two a day as I run into them and when I think of it, so if you're not in there, don't take it personally. If you don't want to be followed by MaddowApp or you have a recommendation for who isn't already being followed by MaddowApp but would be good to include in the list of featured tweeters, let me know in the comments below, or by mail (Will at msnbc.com) or on Twitter to @WillAtWork.
And of course, if you have any other questions, let me know.
UPDATE: Now available in the Canada app store. No Australia yet but don't give up hope.
UPDATE 2: Hey Android users...

Good for Rachel and TRMS, but I don't have one.
TRMS; could we please have an android app. for T mobile????? Please.
A few people have asked for an Android app. We have a guy on staff who is a strong advocate for doing more on the Android platform so hopefully we can start pushing some stuff out. It's always just a question of time and resources but we'll get there eventually.
I'll add our two votes for a Maddow app on the 'Droid.
Ditto for me!
I see some people mentioning a Zumobi Android app for Maddow. They're the ones who made our iPhone app. As soon and I can find someone here in the cube farm with an Android I'm going to see if we can find that and give it a try.
More android requesting is made by me
Thanks Will, I'm looking forward to it!
Would appreciate a droid app!!
Ditto on Droid
Keep up the GREAT work!
Android please. I don't use Crapple iJunk.
pretty please with a droid on top. Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid Droid
thanks!
This is amazing! I don't have one, but shows can now have their own app?? The average tv watcher will have a fininte set of "favorite" shows, and now each can be its own icon on the iPad??? I was aware of papers & magazines doing so, but shows? I'm a regular reader of Cnet News, love to "try" to stay abreast of tech happenings... but it still feels like I'm personally back in a 50's analog world. Well done.
Rock on! Good job, y'all!
Ooh, something new to download.
There is an android app from Zumobi, but right now it freezes and does not load the videos very quickly. A brief and some user comments are at:
sweeeet.
props to Will, certainly, as it almost, but not quite fully balances Jobs' and Murdoch's iPad newspaper venture.
The team and effort behind this thing is so huge that my percentage of props is actually microscopic, but I'll convey your kudos. :)
This may be a dumb question, but please forgive me. I am a BlackBerry owner. Will this app work on the iPhone? Or just the iPad? I would like to get one or the other before the end of this year, but I doubt I could afford both.
We have a separate iPhone app. You can find that here:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rachel-maddow/id315016072?mt=8
It doesn't have the Twitter stuff but it does link to the blog and you can watch all the show videos on it and some other treats.
The Twitter stuff is the coolest part, but thanks. I'll keep it in mind.
If you already have another smartphone that you will keep and want to choose between the iPhone and the iPad--get the iPad. Many iPhone-only apps also work on the iPad (although a bit smaller and grainier) and the iPad specific apps are just so clear and ultra-cool! The larger sizes of the iPad apps are just so easy on the eyes, too!
Thanks for the Maddow iPad app! Downloading it NOW!
This is nice. While y'all are on an app roll might I suggest a boxee (@boxee, boxee.tv) app? I don't have cable (on purpose) and this is how I get things like The Daily Show instead. I'd love to get you and Ed in my living room that way.
What is this "iPad" of which you speak? Is it a way to send those new-fangled telegrams that have our whole town wagging its collective tongue?
I heard that it's 100 times faster than the Pony Express!
sorry, I wasn't aware that I was being so noisy--- #maddow
don't mind me if I am being finicky--- I've got that female-thing going on this week.
Diana B
Not sure if you're joking but in case anyone took that line the wrong way, I meant noisy in the signal/noise sense, not that I think anyone is tweeting too much. :)
Shame on you luring people into this with Stewart's picture, I don't even have an iphone.
Well done! I will download today. Thanks for the info.
Downloaded and ... Twitter connected beautifully, but Facebook doesn't seem to be there. I'd prefer that the app rotate, use the accelerometer, but OVERALL the app is gorgeous and deeply functional. I like the swoosh sound when something is happening, but having it run constantly in the background is annoying and has to be eating some bandwidth (not OK over 3G) and processing cycles.
Thanks! I've been a Rachel fan since Unfiltered went on the air; if I didn't have an iPad (thanks, Dad), the app would sure make me want one.
Great, except its only available in the US Store. What about your international fans?
That's a good question. Our online video isn't geofenced so I don't know why the app would be. I'll see if I can find out.
*Tries to start group chant*
Apps for Droid! Apps for Droid!
Now my iPad will really never leave my side. I won't get any work done and my family will starve.
Fun to see you so up to date. The folks on the Today show don't even know what Facebook is.
Very cool! Now I just need an iPad...
installing now....cool
Oh it is nice to have Rachel's face on my phone!
I downloaded the Rachel Maddow Show apps on my ipad several months ago.
Is this the same one or a different one?
I'm not sure what you downloaded but it couldn't have been this. Maybe you downloaded the iPhone app to your iPad? This is different. (The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is the MaddowFans.com app, which I've seen for iPhone and Android so I wouldn't be surprised if there's one for iPad as well but that would also be different from this.)
three words.
CA NA DA!!
please? :)
Don't mess with me Will I'm having a bad day. Surrounded by water. Can 't go anywhere. Can't watch the water anymore.
Thought I'd check in on Rachel, and what do I see, a new app, beauty, a bright spot on a sucky day.
Where is it? I've searched every way I can think of in the App store and your link won't complete.
Snake eyes, Will, snake eyes.
I'm not sure why you're having trouble. The link works for me and I'm on a PC so it has no reason to give me any advantage. I get a little pop-up asking if I want to launch iTunes. Maybe you're blocking something? What do you get when you open that link?
It's probably because I'm in Australia. Sorry about the snake eyes Will, they were uncalled for. I lost power due to flood shortly after my post so it became a non issue as the ipad became communication central for quite a few people after mobiles and lap tops lost power. She performed like a champion and I look forward to the Maddow App as soon as you are able to fix the access issue, no pressure. My snake eye guilt is going to buy you a week or two at least.
I'm a fan in Australia. Would be great to get this in the Australia store as well.
Looks great and I like the phone one, but shame its not available in the UK
Will, thank you for your incredible work. This is awesome.
