"Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified - especially when it comes to spending. So hold all of us accountable. In this very room, the House will produce, debate, and advance a budget. Last year - in an unprecedented failure- Congress chose not to pass, or even propose a budget. The spending spree continued unchecked. We owe you a better choice and a different vision. Our forthcoming budget is our obligation to you - to show you how we intend to do things differently … how we will cut spending to get the debt down… help create jobs and prosperity … and reform government programs."
-- Advance excerpt from Rep. Paul Ryan's official Republican response to the State of the Union
After the jump, Rep. Michele Bachmann's Tea Party response.
From Rep. Bachmann's prepared remarks:
"After the $700 billion bailout, the trillion-dollar stimulus, and the massive budget bill with over 9,000 earmarks that the President signed, many of you implored Washington to please stop spending money we don't have.
"But, instead of cutting, we saw an unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt at President Obama's direction; unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country."
"For two years President Obama made promises… He claimed that he would find solutions to fix our economy and help create jobs.
"Well, here are a few suggestions:
"The President could stop the EPA from imposing a job-destroying cap-and-trade system.
"The President could agree with House Republicans and commit himself to signing a Balanced Budget Amendment.
"The President could also agree to an all-of-the-above energy policy whereby we increase American energy production, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, reduce the price of gas at the pump, and create good-paying jobs in the U.S.
"The President could turn back some of the 132 regulations put in place in the last two years that each have an impact of $100-million or more on our economy."
"Thanks to all of you, there's reason to hope that real spending cuts are coming. Last November many of you went to the polls and voted out big-spending politicians and you put in their place men and women who have come to Washington with a commitment to follow the Constitution and cut the size of government. And I believe that we are in the early days of a history-making turn here in the House of Representatives.
"Last week we voted to repeal ObamaCare, and each day going forward, we must work hard to dismantle the massive government expansion that has happened over the past two years."

Nasty spending! Now only if we could cut lots of spending and give the money to the rich that would solve all our problems.
Steal from the poor and give to the rich, Republicans are robbin' hoods!
Soundgarden.
He means military spending.
duh...
"That woman is an idiot."
THank you; yes, she is!
Congress Women Michelle Bachmann comments sound kinda like The Negotiations than probably went on went on between President Ronald Regan and The Air Traffic Controllers Union in the 1980's
Look at me! I'm an oil company stooge!
Apparently, government was nice and toned but expanded just over the last two years. So now, just drink Tea and you'll get back to 2008 form when the economy was rosy and there were jobs for all!
"increase American energy production" means drill ANWR, nothing more or less.
"reduce our dependence on foreign oil" is the usual excuse for drilling ANWR but it's bogus.
"reduce the price of gas at the pump" is idiocy. ANWR will have NO effect on pump price.
"create good-paying jobs in the U.S." good jobs drilling ANWR
"From Rep. Bachmann's prepared remarks:"
Shouldn't that read "From Rep. Bachmann's impaired remarks?"
If you are an idiot just say "earmarks".
Don't be fooled. These two are ready to cut Social Security/Medicare/Health Care Reform/Financial Reform & economic recovery policy, but no mention of curtailing the GOP Right wing war machine. Afghanistan & Iraq account for 1/2 of our 12 trillion debt & tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of innocent lives lost. In the words of Ronald Regan & Dick Cheney "deficits don't matter", unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. End these two republican misadventures in the Middle East & we can be the great society again. There's the truth!
What a liar. World War Two spending was a lot more.
Calling her a liar maybe accurate in some circumstances, however, in this instance, I think that it gives her credit for understanding waaaaay more history than that woman knows.
Last two years? If Republicans expand government and debt then it's okay.
Maybe she means the last 222 years, since that nasty liberal rag called the "Constitution" was imposed on the traditional aristocracy by the rabble.
The GOP's want to cut spending? How about the SENATE and HOUSE take pay cuts and have to pay for their own health insurance. Give them a pay cut of $20,000 each. They pay for their own Healthcare. That would save us alot of money!
From "Roadmap""
"Every American (except those enrolled in Medicare or a military health plan) will have the option to receive a refundable tax credit – $2,300 for individuals and $5,700 for families"
Let's start with Republican members of Congress. In fact they should volunteer in order to set an example.
Told to me after making the same mistake: "The Michele from hell has only one L."
good way to remember, thanks Stash
Hey! Wait a minute.
Neither of them could pass a third grade history exam or a fifth grade civics exam.
The Ryans and the Bachmanns of the world hate government, but they want to be the government. That's WAY too suspicious for my taste.
Tax cuts for the rich! Solution to everything.
They want to save money? How about the SENATE and HOUSE members all take PAY CUTS of $20,000 each and give up their Free health care. They would ALL have to pay for their own healthcare and lose $$$$$.
The same thing that American's have done over the years. I don't believe they deserve the pay increase they award themselves.
I think the saddest part of all is that this blog is never read by the citizens who need to it the most. I keep asking myself "how bad does it have to get?" [the economy] And yet, millions of people continue to listen (and believe) this perpetual insanity. How Bachman, Palin, Rove, and all the rest are afforded any credibility is a complete mystery to me. But then again, I earn lower middle class wages, too. What was I thinking? I miss Keith already.....
She means the regulations that prevented the theft of $100 million each by criminals such as herself. That is what "our economy" is, the Republican economy, funded by debt and sustained by lies.
WOW, a whole $13 billion in a $14 trillion economy! Devastating!
Wrong woman, right sentiment!
"The President could rescind the Bush tax cuts, which have cost us $300 billion per year."
Funny, I didn't see that in Bachmann's Tea Party response...
(Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I had an error message and my post still hasn't appeared.)
Yes, we must disempower our government so that it can pose no check on the benevolent corporations who are working so hard on behalf of all Americans by shipping our jobs overseas, extracting our irreplaceable natural resources and selling them back to us at mind boggling profits for themselves, and registering in off shore tax havens to avoid contributing anything to the common good of our country. They want the government to be unable to oversee anything they do and we agree with that! Our motto is, "Give the rich more money!" We're sure that will solve most of our country's problems, somehow, and for the rest, buy guns!
Well, yeah, but you can only buy guns if you're a rich whack job Republican.
Michele Bachmann to give tea party SOTU response, get STFU response.
Immigrants wanting citizenship have to pass a civics test.
Yet, we have new Congressmen and women who couldn't
pass one if their lives depended on it. They should have to pass a
test before their swearing in; civics, history and geography at a 5th
grade level, minimum. Then we wouldn't have to listen to a Bachmann
or a Palin preaching their revisionist history; they'd never pass such a test.
Ya know, workin' and studyin' cause elitism which causes socialism, also, too.
