In Uganda, they call them "iron-bar killings." It means someone beats you to death with a hunk of metal, like a tire rod, a hammer or a crowbar. Iron-bar killings date back to the reign of Idi Amin in the 1970s, the BBC reports, and they're back now that Uganda has been debating a bill to make homosexuality a criminal offense punishable by death.

(David Kato in an AP photo via Human Rights Watch)
Gay-rights activist David Kato became the latest victim of an iron-bar killing yesterday today when he was bludgeoned to death in his Mukono home. Mr. Kato had been shown with other gay Ugandans in an article in that country's Rolling Stone newspaper -- under the headline "Hang Them." The editor of the paper gave the quote above, putting the responsibility to kill on the government. That same editor has now taken to Facebook with a post that demonizes Mr. Kato and blames him for causing his own murder.
Meanwhile the Ugandan legislator responsible for the kill-the-gays bill, David Bahati (TRMS interview), continues to say he'll drop the part about executing gay people. Mr. Bahati has apparently intervened in the case of Brenda Namigadde, a gay Ugandan who's being deported from the U.K. Homosexuality can get you 14 years in prison under current Ugandan law, putting Ms. Namigadde in jeopardy.
"Brenda is welcome in Uganda if she will abandon or repent her behaviour," Mr. Bahati tells the U.K. Guardian. "Here in Uganda, homosexuality is not a human right. It is behaviour that is learned and it can be unlearned. We wouldn't want Brenda to be painting a wrong picture of Uganda, that we are harassing homosexuals." He also promises that she'll be punished if she's "caught in illegal acts." And he's keeping the provision for life imprisonment in his bill.
When we talk about the consequences of violent political rhetoric in the United States, we generally separate the senseless acts of the mentally disturbed from the embarrassing electioneering of those who seek power. In Uganda, the politics themselves are violent. And while we don't yet know why Mr. Kato was killed, we can't so easily cleave the state violence proposed by Mr. Bahati from the very real fear experienced by gay Ugandans.

Trust good old Uganda to continually make bad "social" choices and advance the ugliness that 'some' folks have in their hearts.
Of course the scary part is that the government, there, has been influenced by anti-gay American evangelists...
I know this because of the "people become gay" line... pure American bull....
Considering the connection between Bahati and The Family, I'm sure his rhetoric was learned from these so-called Christians. He really needs to 'unlearn' his own behavior.
That is terrifying. No one deserves to be killed so hideously, no matter what they have done.
I personally have nothing against homosexuals. If one follows the Bible, then I would imagine that there isa Higher Power who will judge those people when their time on earth is over. Who am I to judge? Judge not, that you may not be judged. Just as I feel it is wrong to stone and murder a man or a woman for what certain religions call "adultery". Yes, I believe adultery is wrong, because I believe in the teachings of the Holy Bible, but then again in that Bible, it was Jesus who said: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". I say no more.
Golly...but yer Bible also commands stoning people to death for such things as adultery. So...do ya believe that book or not? You can't pick and choose.
People follow the bible only when it is convenient.
Not sure how this will appear, copy and pasted from search on Biblical verse attributed to Jesus, saying whatever you did to (or for) the least of these, you do to (or for) me. I am not trying to preach here, but show the vastly different ways of saying it. Some are saying he meant only the believers and some are saying only the Apostles. Proving the fallibility of people to interpret what is being said how they wish it to fit.
The things I read (to me) refer to times of judgement by God, based on their fruits or chattel. It says many things about how we should treat each other and not that specific, except an example of Jesus assisting the Samarian, meaning (to me), even those who are not "your brethren" are to be treated well.
Finding ways to twist it into it's OK to hate and kill THEM seems to be trying to be judge. Yes, let them without sin cast the first stone is what I read, too.
Sorry, but the rationalization of people that are followers of Jesus to "hate the sin" and supposedly "love" the sinner falls flat when people are exiled and even killed for their PERCEIVED sin. Wonder why some folks are turned off?

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
One of the least of these - One of the obscurest, the least known, the poorest, the most despised and afflicted.
My brethren - Either those who are Christians, whom he condescends to call brethren, or those who are afflicted, poor, and persecuted, who are his brethren and companions in suffering, and who suffer as he did on earth. See Hebrews 2:11; Matthew 12:50. How great is the condescension and kindness of the Judge of the world, thus to reward our actions, and to consider what we have done to the poor as done to him!
Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren - The meanest follower of Christ is acknowledged by him as his brother! What infinite condescension! Those, whom many would scorn to set with the dogs of their flock, are brothers and sisters of the blessed Jesus, and shall soon be set among the princes of his people.
Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible
And the king shall answer, and say unto them,.... Christ, though a king, and now appearing in great glory and majesty, yet such will be his goodness and condescension, as to return an answer to the queries of his people; blushing and astonished at his notice of their poor services, which they know to be so imperfect, and are always ready to own themselves unprofitable servants; and this he will do in the following manner:
verily I say unto you; a way of speaking often used by him, when here on earth, when he, in the strongest manner, would asseverate anything as truth, and remove all doubt and hesitation about it,
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me: which is to be understood, not in so limited a sense, as to regard only the apostles, and the least of them, for these were not the only brethren of Christ; nor in so large a sense, as to include all in human nature; but the saints only, the children of God, and household of faith: for though acts of charity and humanity are to be done to all men, yet especially to these; and indeed, these only can be considered as the brethren of Christ, who are born of God, and do the will of Christ; for such he accounts his mother, brethren, and sisters; and who are not only of the same human nature, but in the same covenant with him, and the sons of God, not by nature, as he is the Son of God, but by adoption, and so are heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ: now he that does any of the above acts of kindness to these "brethren" of Christ, and because they stand in such a relation to him, even the "least" of them: though he is not an apostle, or a martyr, or a preacher of the Gospel, or has any considerable gifts and abilities for usefulness, but is a weak believer in spiritual things, as well as poor in temporal things; and though it is but to "one" of these opportunity and circumstances not allowing it to be done to more; yet as such is the humility and condescension of this great king, as to account such mean persons his brethren; such also is his grace and goodness, as to reckon every instance of kindness and respect shown to them, as done to himself in person; and will take notice of it, accept and reward it, as if it had been so done.

The least
The word in the Greek order is emphatic: One of these my brethren, the least. So Rev., even these least.
Geneva Study Bible
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
People's New Testament
25:40 Inasmuch as ye have done it, etc. The righteous understood well that they had often, in the name and from the love of Christ, ministered to his brethren, the poor and suffering saints, but they had never understood that their Lord accepted this as a personal service to himself. It should be distinctly noted, (1) that the saved are the righteous, or those whose sins have been washed away by Christ; (2) they are those who have lived and acted in the name of Christ, or have been obedient to his will; (3) they have been full of the love of Christ and have faithfully ministered to the distressed, especially to those of the household of faith. The love of Christ implies love of the brethren, and of all mankind.
Wesley's Notes
25:40 Inasmuch as ye did it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye did it to me - What encouragement is here to assist the household of faith? But let us likewise remember to do good to all men.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary
40. And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, &c.-Astonishing dialogue this between the King, from the Throne of His glory, and His wondering people! "I was an hungered, and ye gave Me meat," &c.-"Not we," they reply. "We never did that, Lord: We were born out of due time, and enjoyed not the privilege of ministering unto Thee." "But ye did it to these My brethren, now beside you, when cast upon your love." "Truth, Lord, but was that doing it to Thee? Thy name was indeed dear to us, and we thought it a great honor to suffer shame for it. When among the destitute and distressed we discerned any of the household of faith, we will not deny that our hearts leapt within us at the discovery, and when their knock came to our dwelling, 'our bowels were moved,' as though 'our Beloved Himself had put in His hand by the hole of the door.' Sweet was the fellowship we had with them, as if we had 'entertained angels unawares'; all difference between giver and receiver somehow melted away under the beams of that love of Thine which knit us together; nay, rather, as they left us with gratitude for our poor givings, we seemed the debtors-not they. But, Lord, were we all that time in company with Thee? . Yes, that scene was all with Me," replies the King-"Me in the disguise of My poor ones. The door shut against Me by others was opened by you-'Ye took Me in.' Apprehended and imprisoned by the enemies of the truth, ye whom the truth had made free sought Me out diligently and found Me; visiting Me in My lonely cell at the risk of your own lives, and cheering My solitude; ye gave Me a coat, for I shivered; and then I felt warm. With cups of cold water ye moistened My parched lips; when famished with hunger ye supplied Me with crusts, and my spirit revived-/Ye did it unto Me.'" What thoughts crowd upon us as we listen to such a description of the scenes of the Last Judgment! And in the light of this view of the heavenly dialogue, how bald and wretched, not to say unscriptural, is that view of it to which we referred at the outset, which makes it a dialogue between Christ and heathens who never heard of His name, and of course never felt any stirrings of His love in their hearts! To us it seems a poor, superficial objection to the Christian view of this scene, that Christians could never be supposed to ask such questions as the "blessed of Christ's Father" are made to ask here. If there were any difficulty in explaining this, the difficulty of the other view is such as to make it, at least, insufferable. But there is no real difficulty. The surprise expressed is not at their being told that they acted from love to Christ, but that Christ Himself was the Personal Object of all their deeds: that they found Him hungry, and supplied Him with food: that they brought water to Him, and slaked His thirst; that seeing Him naked and shivering, they put warm clothing upon Him, paid Him visits when lying in prison for the truth, and sat by His bedside when laid down with sickness. This is the astonishing interpretation which Jesus says "the King" will give to them of their own actions here below. And will any Christian reply, "How could this astonish them? Does not every Christian know that He does these very things, when He does them at all, just as they are here represented?" Nay, rather, is it conceivable that they should not be astonished, and almost doubt their own ears, to hear such an account of their own actions upon earth from the lips of the Judge? And remember, that Judge has come in His glory, and now sits upon the throne of His glory, and all the holy angels are with Him; and that it is from those glorified Lips that the words come forth, "Ye did all this unto Me." Oh, can we imagine such a word addressed to ourselves, and then fancy ourselves replying, "Of course we did-To whom else did we anything? It must be others than we that are addressed, who never knew, in all their good deeds, what they were about?" Rather, can we imagine ourselves not overpowered with astonishment, and scarcely able to credit the testimony borne to us by the King?
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary
25:31-46 This is a description of the last judgment. It is as an explanation of the former parables. There is a judgment to come, in which every man shall be sentenced to a state of everlasting happiness, or misery. Christ shall come, not only in the glory of his Father, but in his own glory, as Mediator. The wicked and godly here dwell together, in the same cities, churches, families, and are not always to be known the one from the other; such are the weaknesses of saints, such the hypocrisies of sinners; and death takes both: but in that day they will be parted for ever. Jesus Christ is the great Shepherd; he will shortly distinguish between those that are his, and those that are not. All other distinctions will be done away; but the great one between saints and sinners, holy and unholy, will remain for ever. The happiness the saints shall possess is very great. It is a kingdom; the most valuable possession on earth; yet this is but a faint resemblance of the blessed state of the saints in heaven. It is a kingdom prepared. The Father provided it for them in the greatness of his wisdom and power; the Son purchased it for them; and the blessed Spirit, in preparing them for the kingdom, is preparing it for them. It is prepared for them: it is in all points adapted to the new nature of a sanctified soul. It is prepared from the foundation of the world. This happiness was for the saints, and they for it, from all eternity. They shall come and inherit it. What we inherit is not got by ourselves. It is God that makes heirs of heaven. We are not to suppose that acts of bounty will entitle to eternal happiness. Good works done for God's sake, through Jesus Christ, are here noticed as marking the character of believers made holy by the Spirit of Christ, and as the effects of grace bestowed on those who do them. The wicked in this world were often called to come to Christ for life and rest, but they turned from his calls; and justly are those bid to depart from Christ, that would not come to him. Condemned sinners will in vain offer excuses. The punishment of the wicked will be an everlasting punishment; their state cannot be altered. Thus life and death, good and evil, the blessing and the curse, are set before us, that we may choose our way, and as our way so shall our end be.
2 Kings 4:10 Let's make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us."
Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
Proverbs 19:17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.
Sorry, I thought I deleted most of that above and left a few examples...pardon me.
Holy shmokes, I wish I were as fast at reading as you are at typing! Yes the Bible is a total contradiction! Kudos to your commitment!

"If one follows the Bible..."
So I guess if Mr. Kato was no Christian, it was ok to beat him to death?
What Christian ethics are that?
How about, it is just wrong to kill any other human being.
Cherry picking?
And the christian (small 'c' intentional) fundies in the US of A would be glad to have the very same policies and actions here, no doubt.
A very sad statement on the world today.
Tell me again how Christians are the persecuted ones?
'didn't you see? that guy was homosexual !! that's totally anti-Christian and violates my freedom of religion!'
Wonder if the members of The Family are going to comment on this. I guess they would claim, like Glenn Beck, that the violence is just some crazy person and not influenced by the violent rhetoric.
This coming just weeks after the United Nations eliminated homosexuality from a list of protections to prevent unjustifiable executions.
There is an understandable line of national sovereignty that has been crossed inappropriately, especially by the united states, many times, but there are also cases that have warrented intervention when none came.
Uganda is not a theocracy. It is inexcusable that the international community be silent about this.
Homosexuality is not, nor has it ever been anything but an inherent part of a person's state of being. the atrocities committed against LGBT people are damaging enough without being legally acceptable, and promoted by government and media.
Violent rhetoric in all forms is undoubtedly damaging. Violence as a result of the learned behavior of arbitrary bigotry shouldn't be overlooked.
So...the "progressive" trend is to encourage the government in Uganda to hang homosexuals rather than letting them be beaten to death in the streets? Noble. Talk about your Pontius Pilate moment.
Study Uganda. The fundies won't stop till those ideas come here.

How on EARTH do we fix this?
With public knowledge, like if Whoppie Goldberg talked about it on the View.
I can't believe Bahati said "We wouldn't want Brenda to be painting a wrong picture of Uganda, that we are harassing homosexuals." If Bahati doesn't want people to view Uganda as "harassing homosexuals", maybe he should stop promoting the prosecution and execution of homosexuals. Sentencing someone to 14 years in prison for their sexual orientation is not just "harassing" someone, it is destroying someone's life.
Birgit, I saw Bahati's interview with Rachel (attached) when he was on her show. He kept saying that it as the People of Uganda who wished this law to be passed, not he, as though he did not have veto power anywhere.
While the UN has removed homosexuality from its list of protected issues, I believe the Psychological association (not sure of the official name here) has added it to a list of genetic situations like left-handedness, so perhaps those that think it is a learned behavior should do some medical research. Those families that expel their relatives for their homosexuality are hurting them emotionally. But so much better than throwing stones, right?
FYI - although the UN did originally vote to remove sexual orientation from the resolution protecting minorities from discriminatory killings in November of last year, it was later re-inserted in the end of December.

so...that's at least something.

Stoned to death with her lover: Horrific video of execution of girl, 19, killed by Afghan Taliban for running away from arranged marriage
But the 19-year-old collapses to the ground, covered in blood - but miraculously still alive.
At this point a Taliban fighter shoots her three times in the head with an AK-47The crowd can be heard shouting allahu akbar as she is killed.
Her lover, Khayyam, is then marched in front of the crowd with his hands tied behind his back.
He is blindfolded with his own tunic and crouches down close to the ground as he tried to protect his body from the stones.
Punished: Her alleged lover, Khyyam, crouches down after being blindfolded and having his hands tied behind his back
But he is battered to the floor by a barrage of rocks. He can be heard sobbing before eventually falling silent.
The stoning - the first to be documented on film since the Taliban were ousted from power - took place in the district of Dashte Archi, in Kunduz, last August.
Officials said that Siddqa had run away after being sold into an arranged marriage for $9,000 against her will.
TALIBAN SPOKESMAN: 'Anyone who knows about Islam knows that stoning is in the Koran, and that it is Islamic law. There are people who call it inhuman - but in doing so they insult the Prophet. They want to bring foreign thinking to this country'
Yes indeed! The intentions of The Founders! We must always look first to The Intentions of The Founders!
Isn't it amazing that both Christianity and Islam directs people to kill other people by stoning?
Do you reckon that it would be by shooting if guns had been around back then, or is torture supposed to be part of the death sentence as prescribed by the Almighty God?
Where in either religion does it say that homosexuals should be killed (by any method)?
somewhere in teh bible it's supposed to say homosexuals are to be killed by toppling a wall on them. srsly. homicidal and destruction of infrastructure.
I wonder what kind of prison sentence, if any, someone gets in Uganda for bludgeoning a gay person to death? To think someone actually might get a more lenient sentence for committing first degree murder than being gay. Now THAT is an interesting twist to Christian morality.

Well, please don't forget the source of all this, "The Family" a group that Huckabee happily belongs to and supports. I can't remember all the details, but this type of hatred being sold as hatred in the name of a God that is absolutely EVERYTHING, well except those things that are on the day's menu for the hate sale.
Hate: It's a Christian Value
I do hope Rachel talks about this tonight or tomorrow night. The Family is certainly connected to it. Exposure is their enemy.
sunlight and fresh air is an excellent mildewcide and disinfectant.
The post on Facebook is sickening. If enough people report it as hate speech (there is a link on the page to do so), maybe it will be removed. I already did so.
Yes, I am of an older generation and thus don't really know how to start facebook campaigns, but please somebody start one!
It's amazing how so many in this issue don't understand the power of their words- The Family, Bahati, the editor from U's Rolling Stone. They shout and call for death until they get confronted with their own bloody hands.
The next time some idiot tells me there is nothing wrong with saying "second amendment remedies" or "if ballots don't work, bullets will", I wants to make them read this and ask who is responsible for David's death.
Words have consequences.
Religion is the root of all evil. It is time to put down the Bible, Quran, the Torah and start thinking rationally, logically, and with compassion. Why can't we have a Bible of common sense?????????????????????
Actually, if Christians obeyed the directions of their leader, Jesus Christ, they would not be killing anyone for any reason....and real Christians don't.
Unfortunately, there are not many real Christians.
The people who kill for capitalism in the name of Christ are following the religion of capitalism, NOT Christianity.
My idea for the Bible of common sense would apply to all not just Christians, real or otherwise.
My immediate concern is why is Brenda N not seeking aslyum in the US? When she knows that being deported to Uganda is a certain death sentence? Why would the UK not grant her aslyum under such circumstances, this makes no sense!
As to the Christian right not speaking up .... they will when they have concocted the perfect scapegoat! Remember the Christian right in the 80's was known as the Moral Majority, and they were neither, thus they became the Christian right, again, they are neither!
This was exactly my question while reading--How can the UK deport her? Even if Uganda agrees not to execute her she could still face 14 years in prison for her sexuality.
Let me ask you this why didnt american people back in November vote to make sure the christian right did not take over the house. By not voting you have failed
Many did vote and the ones that voted for the 'christian right' were mostly un or under educated. As we all know, they are the easiest to lead.
