Regarding Rachel's remarks on the Today show this morning, a similar discussion came up in yesterday's story meeting and Rachel made the point that the mainstream headlines announcing the cost of the military activity in Libya combined with headlines about budget cuts to things like education (just from a quick google scrape: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8...) reminded her of that old saying about funding for education and the Air Force holding a bake sale.
This led to a post-meeting hunt for the source of the saying - for me a somewhat personal pursuit because the image of the poster below is vivid in my childhood memory. It turns out the poster comes from the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom circa 1979.

But a cool discovery I made along the way is the Swarthmore College Peace Collection and its vast, browsable archives in the Triptych tri-college digital library. When you get some time (and if you have an interest in activism, disarmament, peace, history, graphic design....) I really recommend paging through these collections.
I'll enable linking in the comments if you want to share what you find.

A Bernie Sanders 1988 campaign button was a fun find.

Also interesting to see memorabilia from when Christian meant "peace" and pro-life meant anti-war.

Well anyway, I'll stop before I end up pasting links to everything.
I like the Woodrow Wilson button.

Thank you so much for the link!
Knowledge is the most precious possession of the human race and all else pails in comparison. Public schools must be the number 1 national priority.
It is unfortunate that Department of Defense is the current priority.
This poster was a wonderful way for people to remember how politics impacted education during the Cold War.
Department of Defense has sufficient assets to conduct 3 (or more) full scale invasions with excess capacity since the 1960s. NATO assets expands this capacity.
There are over 100 AEGIS cruisers/destroyers, over 100 air/amphibious carriers, and over 100 submarines just in the U.S. Navy arsenal. This does not count Army, Air Force, Marine, National Guard, and Coast Guard assets.
This buildup of assets was crucial to reducing tension between the U.S.S.R. and China, which will become less of a concern after existing treaties with those countries are ratified by congress. None of those assets work effectively against terrorism, and in fact they produce the opposite effect.
Excess Department of Defense assets are destabilizing the Middle East because this makes it possible for terrorist organizations to recruit new members using the claim that the United States is preparing to conduct Christian Crusades. Every military action by the United States in the Middle East reinforces this argument.
Department of Defense capacity needed for the Cold War must be scaled back now that the Cold War is over. The War on Terrorism is a very different kind of war that requires us to recruit our adversary, so having enough assets to conduct 3 full scale invasions will make things worse and not better.
The national focus on fear and terror have gutted our schools and destabilized the Middle East. Our workforce education was squandered.
Department of Defense financial resources need to be reduced and redirected to public education.
I have that exact image/saying on a t-shirt I bought in college in the early 1990s. Still have it tucked in a drawer somewhere.
I have had this poster framed in my home for years. So sad it is still so timely.
More timely than ever!
Will, did you sneak in while I was at work today and photograph the poster on my kitchen wall? I have had that bake sale to buy a bomber poster for over 30 years. It is right next to this one (of a more recent vintage).
Here's the poster as a button: http://triptych.brynmawr.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/Buttons&CISOPTR=643&CISOBOX=1&REC=15
I spent quite a while going through their button collection, I love the numerous snappy slogans. But this one is perhaps my favorite: http://triptych.brynmawr.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/Buttons&CISOPTR=882&CISOBOX=1&REC=19
I knew there was a reason I liked you, mightbealiberal! We are of the same vintage! LOL.
Yeah, true enough. College in the 1970's.
BTW, thanks for the vote of confidence on teh twitter tonight. Once a nuke, always a nuke.
Nuke-E. On the list with E-E, Mech-E, Civ-E...
(yeah, I went to and taught at engineering schools, RPI, Clemson)
Nice to make the connection between this world and the twittersphere!
OK, I am Nuke-E and Matl-E.
I have had this poster framed in my home since the early 80's. How sad it's still so true!
Ever since I have been at my current job I have found this funny. I work at a Navy command, they have bake sales LOL
These links are incredible. Thank you so much for this post!
If our schools could have just gotten half of the money spent on the tomahawk missiles used to attack Libya this week we could give all our teachers nation wide a nice raise so they would be paid what people in the private sector are paid, if we just had the money from one stealth bomber (a weapon built to fight the USSR, and which now has no use) we could pay off all the student loans of the kids in college today!
Respectfully, I ask that everyone call for the impeachment of President Obama. What imminent danger did Libya pose to the U.S to go to war? What is our objective in this war? I hear to protect innocent people. What about the Congo, Myanmar, Iran, Syria, China, etc?
Please put politics and bias aside. At least Bush got Congressional approval for his wars. What about Obama????? Or is the bombing of another Country not a war?
May your conscience find you well.
I sleep soundly at night when I'm not working the overnight shift. Because of the U.S. participation with other countries in this military action, many people's lives will be saved from a crazy ruler who intends to slaughter innocent people just because he can.
Heh. I actually remember seeing this sign/poster all around when it was NEW. In 1979.
Granted, it lasted longer than that, so I used to see it up on bulletin boards in college too, in the dorms and on kiosks. In the early 80s.
Heh. Thanks for making me feel OLD Will.
I am a past local president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the organization that created this poster. I had it hanging in my kitchen for many years. BTW, WILPF was founded by social worker Jane Addams in 1915 as a protest against the impending WWI.
Jane Addams, who is still taught in Women's History courses all over the US.
And how cool Judy in Wisconsin, that you were connected with that organization that made the poster. Now I have someone proper to thank! And from my home state, too!
Thank you for showing that great slogan. Small peace groups and the peace networks are still waging the battle against the war machine. Neither poor weather or accusations of being unpatriotic prevent vigils and rallies from raising the cry for peace. Support those folks when you see them. They help remind us that we need to spend less money on fighting wars and more to fund human needs.
Great !!! I couldn't agree more ! But why doesn't Maddow have a show on what Califonia alone spends on ILLEGAL Aliens every year. Then, show the amount of money the U.S. as a whole spends per year on them. The amount would definatley be amazingly high. It will never happen with her programs agenda. See I'm a one of those "racists" because I think "American CITIZENS" should come first. But, I thought American CITIZENS consist of every race and religion. ILLEGAL ALIENS consist of alot of races and religions.
Why don't you admit that the "illegals" pay a lot of taxes like income, social security, sales and property tax via their landlords.
The undocumented are an integral part of the economy in many states especially in construction and farm jobs.
The only way to end this problem is to jail the owners of the companies that exploit these folks.
any time you purchase something you also pay taxes
