People in Maine gathered yesterday to protest Governor Paul LePage's removal of a mural about the state's labor history. Maine artist Robert Shetterly went after Mr. LePage quite directly:
LePage's decision to remove the mural secretly was one of the most cowardly acts I have witnessed. If he believed he was right about removing it, that its eradication was good for the people of Maine, he would have done it in daylight, and been there himself to take credit for protecting us from art as propaganda. In fact, he would be here right now, if he had the courage of his words.
Rarely has an elected leader made clearer the difference between respect accorded to an office and respect earned by its holder. Paul LePage has embarrassed himself, not us. Disgraced himself, not the state of Maine.
This mural thing isn't going away, and neither, really, is the mural. Above, video of someone projecting it onto the Maine State House -- making a mark without leaving one.
(h/t the good folks on our Facebook page.)

I don't know who did it.. but I LOVE them!!!
Fantastic...looks like the work of ANONYMOUS and a Civil Disobedience Afficiando..and in THAT case...it's much better to NOT try to find out who did it...you heard the interchange at the end right...whoever it was was threatened by some security goon with arrest by the Police.......SO...LEAVE tHE SOURCE ALONE!!!!!!!
So FANTASTIC......and the music was powerful...Good work! keep your creativity going and do some more...hit different places so they can't keep up....GO FOR IT!!!
Ayuh, wicked awesome. Them projection ah-tists are creative.
Seriously, this isn't going away. MaddowBlog, you have an open invitation to come to Maine for the full experience. Thanks for your attention.
This was no Anonymous (IMO), don't sour the credit. This carried no harm, and no legal or reasonable challenge against freedom of speech, if we still may claim "USA".
This was hands on, calling 'a LePage' out on soul and wits, or the lack of.
Very fine.
that was awesome! Keep it up!
AWESOME indeed! Great video! Loved the soundtrack to boot. Hat's off to the creative genious who did that. Get him on the show!!!!!!!! Great post; thanks!
Rachel's highlight of the video on the show did not do it justice! Without the soundtrack music and brief journey to the capitol, it was severely diminished.
Hope when she lands the creators on the show, the WHOLE thing, soundtrack and all, can be played as shown here. It was only 3 minutes of GREAT video!!! You can afford that snippet of time, Rachel.
Brilliant blend of technology and art for a great cause!
LOVE IT!
Wonderful !We need more of these gorilla projectionists emblazoning the truth on the facade of Republican led state government & the buildings.
voted up, but it's "guerrilla," hate to be the guy who calls someone on grammar but it does make a difference in connotation here, hehe
Wonderful!! Would love to know more about this crew.
Ditto! Fly em in, TRMS.
That's awesome..
That is the coolest thing. Keep fighting people!!
The ideas that art work represents cannot be removed from the mind. The actions of the past cannot be changed by rewriting history.
These actions represent another example of hiding the truth in the hopes of justifying an indefensible position. Just as the dictators in the Middle East all say the protests are being driven by foreign enemies, the GOP places the blame on the american worker.
Do the current actions of the state GOP leaders represent the will and desires of "We the People"? Polling says absolutely not. That is the indefensible position.
Yes! Wonderful! Keep up the good fight!
Wow. That is incredible!
Creative protest. AWESOME!
Wonderful! Keep it up!
Now THAT is art!
You just can't kill artistic expression. It comes back stronger and LOUDER!
GENIUS!!!!!!
Power to the people! This is beautiful! I wish we could take all these new Tea party governors and place them on an island to together where they would be forced to rely on each other to survive. They wouldn't last a month.
They could reprise Golding's Lord of the Flies. I wonder who would take the role of Roger.
Wonderful! Absolute genius!!
Love love love this kind of protest! Gets the point across in a creative manner, and does no damage to public property so the targets of the protest can't really complain about it.
That is so totally awesome! Great idea...whoever you are!
art WORK!
love it!
Why art and artists matter!
This was totally awesome...whoever you are, great idea!
Artist's and their work are essential to this or any democracy. It is the power that can unite. Thanks to whomever did this!
