News update: The Tennessee Senate passed the "Don't Say Gay" bill today by 20-10. The House has let the bill founder, and supporters say it's on hold until at least 2012. That should give Just Say Takei time to catch on.
Today's best thing: It's OK to be Takei

Kind of cute, but not too sure about the whole shopping channel way it ended. And does this now mean that Cary Grant will exclaim, "Because I just went Takei all of a sudden!" in Bringing Up Baby?
I want one of those t shirts with the rainbow Star Trek logo! Thanks George, you were one of my faves. Avid fan when Star Trek was "prime time".
Hi Rachel! I guess Tennessee has joined Iranian President Ahmadinejad in stating,"we don't have any gays here."
just like africa...*ahem* yeah, sure, right...no takeis here.
bull pucky.
we are everywhere :)
*noted: sarcasm*
This was cute. I understand it's to raise awareness around the issue, but I don't like the idea of "giving in" to the bill, in a way, by not saying the word gay. In fact, I think just the opposite should happen. Everyone, everywhere, should look for ways to fit the word gay into their sentences -- ESPECIALLY in Tennessee.
With Love and Gratitude,
Jeremiah
ummm, it's not giving in. it's to make light of it..
he used humor to show how ridiculous it is to change - to stop saying it.
It's not "giving in". It's openly subverting.
Was Iranian President Ahmadinejad talking about Tennessee when he said,"we don't have any gays here."
I'll pass.....can we have someone else?....i don't want to be takei.
I LOVE this! Granted, it's an imperfect solution for an imperfect world, but it drives home the ludicrous nature of the proposed bill. This seems to be the far right idea of "just ignore the problem and it'll go away."
This was said so well it made me very gay!
Thank you TRMS =))) Knew you had post it =)))
As ridiculous as this is, I can't help thinking how hurtful it will be to LGBT young people at the most vulnerable time in their lives. For the straight kids, it reinforces by government decree that gay people are "less than."
I wish I could say that this was the only shameful thing this legislature has done, but it's not. I'm embarrassed to live in Tennessee right now.
It is wonderful that individuals like George and Rachel step forward and celebrate who they are!
As a white hetero male who struggles with letting my hidden self be exposed, I cannot imagine the courage that coming out must take. To do so in a public manner raises that bar even higher. It is true heroism that unquestionably saves lives.
Must. Have. T-shirt!
(I can never have enough gay geek cred.)
It's an intriguing concept; if we don't say it, it won't exist. I wonder if that actually works. Do you think if we don't use the word "morons", that would prevent the Tennessee Republican legislature from being complete idiots?
Unfortunately no, no more than not saying "gay" will make "gays" not be "gay".
exactly.
Can we have a law that outlaws saying the word Republican?
Probably there needs to be an official gov't list of all the words we can't say--like "smaller government" and "freedom of speech."
I wanted to express an opinion I have re: the abortion etc...that the repubs are trying to eleminate... I'm not sure this is all they want. I honestly believe they want to turn women back into second class citizens. That's why they want to limit our health coverage, be the deciding factor over our reproduction, and obviously anything else to do with our bodies. I think if a closer look is taken into this area...a lot of women, maybe some men too would be surprised. I do hope I'm wrong, but it's just what i'm seeing and feeling lately. Soon women will be back in the homes preggers and barefoot...and the men will have the jobs...if the repubs get their way.
Only one thing wrong with your post - there are no more jobs for the men to have.
I hate to dash your hopes, Chrys, but you are not wrong. Everyone is beyond outrage over the radical Republican overreach. Everyone, that is, except for one group that I cannot begin to fathom, Republican women.
Of course they want to turn women into 2nd class persons, read your Bible marriage is slvery contract!
I love several things about Tennessee: the whisky, the Smoky Mountains that not as majestic as the Rockies out west still merit applause when one takes in the view from atop one of the mountains, Memphis barbecue, Stax Records, Memphis Blues and Beale Street.
This bill that is going to the state Senate makes me ashamed both an American and a Tennessean. If only there was more rational people in my state...
Just thought it interesting that there is a street in Knoxville, TN called Gay St.
There's a Gay St. in Nashville too - ironically only a few blocks from the capital. Maybe they'll have to re-name it now. Anti-Gay St.? Homophobia St.?
Isn't it obvious? Takei Street!
Alllll righty then.....
Ok......I'm gay.
I am BEYOND a HUGE Star Trek fan. I have the movies, the watch, the Enterprise phone (with a cord!!, remember those?), the Barbie Kirk and random buxom blond dolls with tricorder (I would have prefered Uhura, but we do live in a "whites are cooler" society), I even have the 3-dimensional chess set, people.
OK....FINE.....I....AM......A......GEEK.
I can admit it. It only stands to reason that I really NEED one of these T-shirts. Seriously. A rainbow Star Trek logo is like a dream come true. ;)
I have the Uhura doll, sans box. Make me an offer!
Ooohh Ooohh! Uhuru! I am not a collector of stuff, but that's intriguing! I am picturing a Star Trek doll collection with a lifelike bridge set and make a funny video. I think it's been done already, though.
jimspeiser@yahoo.com. It either goes to you or eBay.
Better put it on eBay or another reader here... but THANKS!!!
Can we ban republicans next? :-)
LOL . . . roflmao . . . lets ban idiocy instead . . . and it will include them !!!
Hooray George! Another nifty vid from our fave gay spaceman.
Jeremiah Stanghini: "I understand it's to raise awareness around the issue, but I don't like the idea of "giving in" to the bill, in a way, by not saying the word gay."
I'm pretty sure George wasn't *really* suggesting we go ahead and adopt the idea and stop using the word gay and maybe use the word "Takei" instead. I think he was poking the pointy stick of sarcasm at it.
Ya think???
Is Takei the right term? Or is it Homo-Treksual.
pretty much either or.
live long and takei
This is one of the first times in my life that I can say I am extremely proud of being a cousin of the Roddenberry that created Star Trek which gave us such a great role model as George Takei. Gene was always way ahead of his time. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire (or in this case insanity with more insanity). George is right on target - always give them options they can't possibly comprehend.
Gotta ... get... T-shirt
Live long and prosper all of my rainbow friends.
Oh myyyy.
This made my night seeing this on TRMS tonight. I absolutely love George Takei. From Star Trek, to listening to him on Howard Stern years ago and just following him on Twitter. Dude makes me laugh and smile to no end.
As a gay person myself, if I had known about him growing up (I forget when he came out), I probably would have been less depressed and bummed out by homophobia I lived through just seeing him smiling, happy and humorously insulting bigots. Thank god for the internets. And for Rachel showing him on the tv machine.
The meme is already well entrenched at work.
George Takai rocks big time.
When I was a moody teenager, my father, who didn't understand adolescents, always told me "C'mon, get happy, be gay, nothing's that bad" --- The word "gay" was used to describe a happy, fun, light-hearted person.
My description of conservatives would be prickly, sour-faced, rigidly self-righteous homo sapiens, able to double-speak out of both sides of their mouths. Maybe we should coin a word that would allude only to them!
