Virginia's Republican Governor, Bob McDonnell, is out with a new ad called "The McDonnell Administration: By the Numbers," touting his accomplishments in areas like job creation, pothole repair, wine production, and land conservation (those achievements are also organized here in a handy, easy-to-read list).
Here's Gov. McDonnell's ad:
But the folks at NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia say Mr. McDonnell left out an accomplishment. They're sending around their own "By the Numbers" video -- a rebuttal of sorts -- detailing what they refer to as Governor McDonnell's "success in also stripping women of their access to reproductive healthcare."
Here's NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's ad:
As the folks at the Washington Post's Virginia Politics blog point out, this isn't Gov. McDonnell's first "By the Numbers" ad or the first "By the Numbers" rebuttal.

It is nice that the Governor's ad shows his fiscal irresponsibility.
70 mph speed limit? Yippee! Let's burn gas.
Here is a photo of my ride.
McDonnell's own feverishly right-wing Lieutenant Governor, Bill Bolling, said about Virginia's economy, ~sometimes we take one step forward, one step back. Sometimes we take one step forward, two steps back.~
Yah, Republicans expect a break when they play hopscotch with jobs, but they sure don't give Obama any credit for his progress.
They would if he ever made any!
When I saw the 70 posted with McDonnell's name, I immediately wondered if he was talking about his IQ.
I love driving 70 in the few places you can.
Oh what a wonderfully thoughtful comment about it being his IQ. Ha, ha. You're so cleaver.
This is the real challenge for you liberals, you can't argue the facts because they are against you, so you resort to name calling and taunts.
No wonder our country is in so much trouble.
Used to be there was a 55 mph national speed limit. This was enforced to save gas at time when the US was being rooked by rising oil prices. It was justified by claiming "55 saves lives". Which is more important- saving lives, national security, or oil company profits?
Trader, I used to live in VA, still have family there, and McDonnell is an embarrassment. Add Cuccinnelli to the VA hall of shame and it begins to look like the states that VA folks like to mock. VA benefits from the one thing repubs constantly attack....the federal government. If it weren't for the proximity to Washington DC, and the military bases on the eastern side of the state, VA would be a sleepy backwater. Wanna dispute that? Spend time in the western and central parts of the state, or any area away from the DC suburbs or Newport News, and you'll see. I spent 8 years in those areas, and that is the REAL VA, and it's not the economic powerhouse that repubs like McDonnell claims it is. Talk to the ranks of unemployed in the crumbling ruins of the textile mills in Danville, and ask them what McDonnell has done for them....NOTHING!
So, Trader, wanna dispute the truth now, or do you just want to be smarmy and ignorant? I'm guessing you'll try to do both, and fail miserably at both.
Trader,
Please look at the way the RNC and Replicans in local governments have been behaving since they took office last year. I used to be a Republican until I finally realized they are about a few issues and none of which supports our country as a WHOLE. Who REALLY cares about abortion or other extreme issues when we need to rebuild our economy so there's more tax revenue.
By the way, did you catch Eric Cantor's hypocriscy on the Anthony Weiner issue? Typical.
Is it true that for every 10 mph over 55 you use 20% more gas? Just a thought.
Trader, you actually mention facts and say that they are against the progressives????Do you really believe you even have a grasp of what a fact is?
Fact: a majority says that taxing the top to pay the deficit is preferrable to cutting Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security. Is that against us? Or isn't that a Progressive idea that should be done?
Fact: A majority does not want to change Medicare into a "premium suppoort" plan. Another Progressive idea.
Fact: A study was done that showed more FOX viewers as being misinformed than viewers of other outlets. A definite grasp and understanding of the fact by....you guessed it, Progressives.
Fact: The FOX noise conservative propaganda machine is a shill for the Rethugnut party. A fact, but not a Progressive uiea.
Fact: You are probably a TprtyRethugnut rightwing nuttery nutjob who trolls this website to spew your BS.
The 70mph speed limit is ridiculous. It was 65 and people routinely went 80 or more. Now it is downright scary. You need to do 80 in the right lane and are getting passed by cars in the left going even faster.
I am not sure what land he claims to have preserved but all along I-64 and I-95 there are vast swathes of clear cut land.
I-264 has so many huge potholes that must be avoided that sometimes it is like being in a video game.
I don't have a high-schooler but I see plenty of pregnant teens.
Sometimes I really hate it here.
It almost sounds like home.
@AdoptiveSNMom:
"Sometimes I really hate it here."
THEN MOVE! AMF!
Trader,
Just because you arent satisfied with your government, doesnt mean you need or should leave the state or country. You get that right? This isnt a take or leave it country. Thats why we vote.
Your response doesnt reflect well on your grasp of civics or history. Im sure hwt you meant was, if you arent happy with your government, get involved and vote him out.
The marketing person in me thinks that the NARAL ad falls a bit short because the music is a tad hypnotic with only white text on black background and after a while, I had trouble focusing on the message. The numbers are so important and they were almost lost.
But as a Utahn, it is so nice to know we're not the only crazy state.
Dim-bulb Bob sure wants to be President.
GOOD for NARAL!!
Virginians need more powerful responses to his idiocies than just this one.
I am appalled.. outraged.. that the opening ad for the Ick Factor video discussion with Melissa and Rachel about Anthony Weiner is a pro-FRACKING commercial! Seriously???? Yea, let's destroy the groundwater, our drinking water, for a little natural gas. Geez!!!!
We share your outrage Jan, and sadly there is really not much that can be done. At least MSNBC is helpless to choose their advertisers. My favored solution is to right- click on the advertiser's box to the left of the screen. A menu will pop up with "Watch on the Rachel Maddow Show" option. Click on that. A Whole new window will appear by-passing the offending commercial. Close off the old window with the commercial on it and enjoy.
Bob McDonnell is the best governor Virginia's had since George Allen. Face, you're just jealous in your piece of crap blue state.
Enjoy life. Drive 70 EVERYWHERE.
Isn't it fun when we get new trolls to play with? :-)
I just wish that at least they were a little smarter....but then again, wishing for a smarter troll is like wishing for a rational repub, wishing for something miraculous to spring into existence.
Notice that name calling soon follows whenever challenged.
Are you speaking to me, Stan? If you review Trader's comments on this thread, you will see that practically every one involved name-calling, and that when I made a substantive response to his post on VA, I received NO response at all. I guess facts were too much for him.
Uff, you know how I feel about my home state and I know you lived there for abit yourself...did you see any of the evils that gall me so?
I think the thing that really bugged me was during the oil boom of the early 80s. On the way to work on I-40 each morning, I would pass a drilling rig with a huge American flag on it, and a sign that read, "Let the Bastards Freeze in the Dark", referring most specifically to folks in the Northeast. Having hailed from that area originally, it struck a nerve. Of course, I also found it ironic that the same rig that displayed that sign also flew the flag of the United States of America. I guess they kind of forgot about the "United" part. Of course, a year or so later, the oil boom became the oil bust, and those same smug bastards were pretty much out of work. Unfortunately, the result was major cuts to luxuries like schools.
I am a staunch Virginia Democrat. I like McDonnell and I think he has done a good job and been pretty fair as a leader. I do not agree with everything he does however, it took the General Assembly to make those unpopular or should I say anti-choice laws. So we cannot blame all of that on just one man (even though he could have vetoed the legislation). It has been my thought that McDonnell does not seem to be your typical Republican.
