I had never seen the New York Stock Exchange trading floor from the perspective of the bell balcony (or whatever it's called - does it have a name?) so it was a treat to be allowed up there on a recent tour. This is basically what it would look like at trading time except the lights wouldn't be in "cocktail" mode.
One other photo after the jump just for fun...

i have never *seen*, will.
Ug. Thanks. I wonder what my brain was trying to tell me there.
you're welcome - it's amazing what the brain alerts us to :)
Now that is interesting. But who sits in those chairs at those stations? You never see any alleyway like that when reporters are covering the place. Only people standing around the kiosks or whatever they are called. Of course, in a way that makes sense. Reporters do not tell you everything. Just what they want you to know.
Kind of looks like a casino with slot machines. Not so surprising, eh?
I looked at those chairs & workstations and thought - it looks like a high tech sweatshop. But where are the green lampshades?
I'm sorry to see the MSNBC crowd this afternoon - Uygur & Matthews - are now wondering if getting rid of Weiner was really a good thing?
Are we all just stupid out here - the press, cable TV, etc. constantly fell into line to make jokes, publish the emails from all the "fame seeking" women that he was stupid/creepy enough to send.
Weiner was a good voice for those of us in Middle America that are getting broken by Banks, big Corporations, the Republicans, the Tea baggers, the right wing, expecially as the MSNBC crowd continues to move to the center (in case no one noticed the "center" is not almost off the cliff on the right).
This was a sad situation, and the democrats and progressives that weighed in (including our President who continues to lose points with me for his inability to take a stand but...) should have kept their big mouths shut - oh, I forgot, it got them press and TV coverage - much more important than actually accomplishing something for the people who put them in office.
We have become a sad, divided country - it's fine to disagree, but to follow "my way or the highway" is so wrong in free and democratic America.
Sorry for the errors
(the"center is now almost off the cliff on the far right)
"fame seeking" wome that he was stupid/creepy enough to send emails too"
etc.
Will,
I did a little reading on yestersdays post/question concerning the wind power and transmitting it across the grid to where it is needed. It turns out sometimes they have so much power that they can't give it away. The wind power people have suggested that they should be paid to take it. Its called negative pricing.
It's a lot more complex than you would think. The BPA has a pretty good (almost) plain english document that tries to explain the current situation and how we got here.
Just like the wind hydropower is also intermittent. It is its highest during the spring when long duration spring rain and melting mountain snow force the release of water from the dams regardless of electricity demand. Thats called spilling.
When the water is spilled over the dam it produces bubbles in the water that are forced deep into the river. The oxygen in the bubbles is forced by pressure to disolve into the water, which raises the TDG (total dissolved gas) which is very bad for the baby salmon (salmonids).
BPA is mandated by the Clean Water Act to protect the fish in the river. They also allow and in fact encourage the Windmill people to use the transmission lines that BPA owns.
So to protect the fish they at, at certain times, must produce electricity. They have 30 damns that they directly manage. They have agreements with fossil fuel energy producers that BPA will supply the fossil fuel customers with power at no charge and the power plant shuts/solws down. They also have the nuclear plant reduce as much as possible.
Heres the kicker. The wind folks get production crdits from the state and/or federal government based on how many kw's that they produce. This is meant to encourage the building of windpower. So when BPA offers to feed thieir customers for free they say no, it will cost us our government tax credits. So they want BPA to pay them to take the free power.
They are trying to solve the problem but they are concerned because of the large amount of wind that will be coming online in the coming years.
Might need to rethink those subsidies...
Definitely need to rethink those wind power subsidies when they are having such unintended consequences.
I have a question about Wall Street. What is the value that they create?
As much as I dislike the Koch brothers for instance, they actually produce energy that is of value and is a product that society values.
Industries produce a product. Teachers provide education.
To me they seem like parasites that only provides for themselves and provide nothing to the host.
I guess I just don't get it.
I never thought I'd say this, but I am ashamed of you Rachel. On your show yesterday, you kvetched about that school for unwed mothers closing. You are just like everyone else: you just want to complain about it.
Instead, there is a very cheap and clean energy technology that would pay for that school (and every other government need), plus make it possible to fund them without any tax increase. Energy price is EVERYTHING to the economy. If we could integrate a new energy technology that was 5 times as cheap as the next lowest (dirty coal), we would be able to DO SOMETHING about that school instead of just kvetch about it.
The NASA Chief Scientist endorses it. LENR (low energy nuclear reaction) using nickel. Each gram of nickel yields around 1.7 billion calories - or in other words a full super tanker of oil (2 million barrels) is the energy equivalent of less than one ton of nickel.
Shame on you Rachel - you complain about cuts, but you ignore a silver bullet technology that would solve what you shamelessly exploit for ratings:(
The main stream of the scientific community doesn't buy LENR. Originaly known as Cold Fusion it caused quite a stir about a decade ago until others could not reproduce the finding of the original researchers.
A few individuals are still pursuing the idea and good luck to them.
There are many fruitful lines of research being investigated today. Hardlly a day goes by without a significant step forward in the many different scientific domains that are working to solve our energy problem.
Unfortunately some of them won't pan out. But the relentless efforts taking place around the globe will suceed.
Brad, your nickel energy spam is off topic and becoming a nuisance. You've made your point already on a number of threads. I'm deleting you going forward.
in fact, that's all you've ever posted about.
