On last night's show, Chris Fitzsimon from NC Policy Watch told TRMS guest host extraordinaire Melissa Harris-Perry that the only thing standing in the way of extreme abortion restrictions busting free of Democratic Governor Bev Perdue's veto stamp in North Carolina was a single Republican state senator.
This senator had voted against the measure the first time around. Then Governor Perdue vetoed the bill, the House overrode the veto and the Senate was about to hold its own override vote. The Republican in question hadn't announced, as of last night, whether he'd vote against the restrictions again -- in other words vote to uphold the veto -- or whether he'd sit out the vote entirely. Sitting out the vote would mean the veto would be overridden and the new abortion restrictions (24-hour waiting period, state-mandated scripted counseling, sonograms, etc.) would stand.
And today, that's what happened in the North Carolina Senate. From the Raleigh News & Observer:
The state Senate voted 29-19 to cancel Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of a bill that seeks to limit abortions. ... Sen. Stan Bingham, a Republican who voted against the bill in June, left the building before the override vote.

You have really got to be f'ing kidding me! My daughter was fondled on the bus and they did NOTHING!!! Now if she's raped SHE will be made the villain? I'm sick... just sick about this!!!!
This a clear case of....Not putting myself in the shoes of a victim. Self Righteous Idiots who claim to be Biblical Purists. This should be a no brainer due to the fact that you can not produce laws based on a Religious belief. This is forcing Scientist to disprove Creation. Can a Christain legislature make laws based on their faith to be enforced on Atheist? Muslims? Buddist? Again, this should be a no brainer based on the fact that these "fake laws" are produced from a Theory That The Bible Is Fact and it Trumps the Constitution. Our Constitution is suppose to be the law of the land....not the Bible.
These douche bags have once again chosen to ignore one of the principles of our Democracy... the Separation between Church and State. They don't give a damn about women, the constitution or common decency. They would rather save a fetus today so they can abuse, ignore, and then execute them later. DISGUSTING!
GadflyGrandma - IMO they are worse than disgusting, but there are no words I can think of, except maybe abominable, and even that's too mild. They are wannabe Rulers of the World, and I believe they use Religion to back up their ambitions.
Unless something is done to stop them cold, our beautiful Country could become a Dictatorship, and Police State, Heaven forbid.
I think Gov. Purdue is outstanding. She's a real fighter.
This is Christian Sharia in action. Aren't there laws on the books against this kind of thing?
Heaven forbid a woman should have to wait 24 hours before murdering an innocent life!
No, YOU are all disgusting. There is nothing in the Bible about abortion, but I do believe that everyone should have a chance to live, no matter what age. Notice, all of you who argue for abortion were given life. Be thankful for it.
Yes...we fought the good fight here for a woman's right to her own body, her own control over her choices she makes with her doctor, and her right to decide her own fate. But as our trolls emphasize, NC isn't known as the Buckle on the Bible Belt for no reason...these issues come up here all the time. This year, with the TeaParty overreach and ALEC helping to write the legislation, they were especially nasty and well publicized.
Thanks to NARAL - NC and to Governor Beverly Perdue, to my own state representative and Senator for voting the Democratic line and staying strong against the over ride votes.
We'll get 'em next year.
Bravo FightTheLeft, more power to the Christian Taliban! May their bombs continue to explode free in the lobbies of every Planned Parenthood and may their assassins never miss an abortion provider!
FTL, it's not life until it can maintain itself outside the womb. Until then, it's a parasite.
There's nothing in the bible about not screwing up the environment either, because the people writing it had no knowledge of these things.
The bible is not a viable source to back up an argument on this forum. We prefer you deal in reality, not the fantasy world in your head, please.
Now, now, DNFTT, chillun...DNFTT.
Personally I think its time for a constitutional amendment to ban Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etc. If women can't control their own medical treatment, the least men should have to sacrifice is causing that treatment.
Good point.
very good point in fact, it brings to mind the question of why are we not passing laws against plastic surgery, breast enhancements, Lypo, penile inplants? who's lobbying against cigarettes, alcohol or caffiene? If we hold the Bible in hand and quote.....You must Quote it in it's Fullness....selective activists huh?....Religion in it's place....Get Out of My State House!!!
If we want to continue the extremism, any teen underage caught pregnant must be questioned by the police and the father arrested. Any teen giving birth whose conception date is before the wedding date (if married) must be questioned and have the father arrested. The pregnant teen should also be arrested for aiding in a felony, sent to prison where the rules say(?) she must put her child up for adoption. Both will be labeled sexual offenders for the rest of their life and must register where ever they live.
We can require dna testing for anyone getting a drivers license and these records used to verify the legitimacy of all American children born. In the future, this will be useful to weed out bad genealogy.
On a more serious note, any person who has to wait 24 hours where it would be a financial burden should sue the state. And all the clinics should sue the state for requiring sonograms if not medically necessary.
Careful, you're giving the tea baggers new legislative ideas.
It's so ridiculous that we should have to wait 24 hours to murder an innocent life!! How terrible!! We should be able to drown those babies in saline solution whenever we choose! They don't deserve rights!
You liberals are sick cretins, you know?
Moderator!!! We've got a spamming troll here!
Wanted to make sure you saw Chicago Sun-Times story on Joe Walsh today. http://www.suntimes.com/news/6720892-418/tea-party-rep.-joe-walsh-sued-for-100000-in-child-support
I saw that. Talk about family values! Ugh.
I was laid off from my job....got behind $900 and they locked me up. But this guy can owe 100k and walk the streets talking about Fiscal Responsibility?.......So the laws do not apply for those who make the laws...good to know.
Profiles in courage.
Absolutely disgusting. Especially the mandated sonograms. It is a difficult enough decision without someone shoving an image of your fetus in your face & asking if you want to hear the heartbeat.
Oh, I feel sure you don't get to DECIDE whether you want to hear the heartbeat -- that would mean giving women a choice! No, the heartbeat undoubtedly plays as background music to the doctor reading the government-written and government-enforced speech that is required under this horrible bill. Can't believe what these Republicans are doing to my home state. Thank you Governor Perdue for your efforts to stop them...
Yeah, thanks Gov. Perdue for your efforts to protect our rights to murder innocent children!
Sick. You all are sick. Maybe you should have all been aborted.
I'm old enough to remember 'coat hanger' pregnancy terminations. When a person wants to terminate a pregnancy, nothing will stop her! When will neocons learn this?
they don't care Liz...they live in their self righteousness...they have placed themselves higher than the God they claim to follow..as judges of their fellow human beings...they make me sick...
Their main effort is to prevent abortions, just check with Michelle Bachmann how much she cares for kids that are young adults, as in bullying/suicide prevention. their interest is limited at best.
When the rethug fundies support the rights of the born with the vehemence that they support the rights of the unborn I'll believe that they have moral values until that point in time they are merely malicious tyrants.
But, PaPlanner, don't you understand that some are worthy and some are not? These are the only categories for the seekers after power. If they have to accept the births of, you know, the" unworthy", in order to get the "worthy" here, that's a sacrifice they are willing to make...at least until they can figure out some way around it.
Wealthy women will still be able to afford a "quick trip overseas" to handle the problem. It's only the poor and the rapidly failing middle class who will be affected by making abortion illegal.
I'm old enough to remember 'coat hanger' terminations. How much blood is enough for republicans?
They never get enough. Isn't that obvious?
wouldn't that make them vampires??
Not enough they turned abortion back into the alley, they have stripped unions of all their rights they are removing all clean water and clean air bills in every state they won the Goveneors office, now they are driving us over the edge again by not raising the dept ceiling and to make sure that people find it almost impossible to vote in every state they run,I just want to thank all the people who voted them back into office every where and put them back in power aren't you all proud,
I too am old enough to remember the coat hanger days. These Rubugs have got to go
This entire movement makes me sick too, but the element that I find really disturbing is the "state-mandated scripted counseling". It is flat out brain washing. If this is ok then why can't there be government scripted counseling before people purchase guns? Oh wait- that would intrude on a person's constitutionally protected right- hmmm....
Why were these morons elected? I know they did not reveal this crap in their
campaigns, but come on people, the republicans do have a reputation. How can they forget the sleazeball years of georgie w? I just don't get it. It scares me that a person like Michelle Bachman gets elected again and again. Then they are shocked at their narrow minded, horrific politics.
Senator Stan Bingham obviously did not have the courage to stand up for his convictions again, leaving the building to avoid the veto override vote after he'd previously voted against the bill. I wonder if he will have the courage to face his constituents.
or face whichever woman in his life who pricked his conscience enough to get the first vote...
God help him if it turns out to be his daughter and she gets into an unwanted pregnancy. Sometimes justice takes a while.
I agree with you, RVGrandpa. If only we could all be there to see for ourselves when justice is meted out, it would be satisfying. Sometimes there is "Boomerang Karma", which means that cause is immediately followed by effect - but other times decades or centuries could elapse before the perp gets what he deserves.
These laws violate the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment, the state can not prove a reasonable governmental purpose for requiring non-safety or medical procedures during any medical treatment a woman receives. To require such procedures for women that are not needed or even desirable for medical treatment but not for men is blatant discrimination and should be treated as such.
In the absence of such a court decision the law should be defied. Fill the jails with women of child bearing age, obstetricians and nurses. Take a page from the anti-abortion fanatics, post the legislators home addresses on the internet, picket their homes with signs showing photos of the results of their votes, dump a ton of viagra in the middle of Charleston. Civil disobedience is in order.
Given his constituency (extremely conservative, rural Davidson County - nearly 70% Republican), Bingham would undoubtedly have caught hell (and a primary challenge) had he voted against overriding the veto. (There are already rumblings from the local Davidson County churches about running a far-right challenger against Bingham in '12.)
Ugh. Well, after this story, and the previous post, I guess I am going to be avoiding the Carolinas for a good long while. I wish people would stop trying to control my vagina.
We had planned to drive through North Carolina in January of 2012. Now we'll either not stop or drive around it on our way to Florida.
Please don't punish the good people of an entire state because of this. I used to live in North Carolina and voted for Perdue. We are the the same people who voted for Obama over McCain.
The economy is hurting there, as everywhere. People living there need your business. Despite this vote, it's a beautiful state with friendly people of all political persuasions.
Thank you Laura -- we appreciate your kind words. Governor Perdue is doing what she can and I am just hoping the tea party voters, and those who decided to sit out the 2010 elections, will see the error of their ways in 2012.
There is not enough blood for these people to force you to live by their beliefs. It's just further subjugation of women and forced capitulation by all to what these fanatics claim are Christian principles. They are the taliban without robes.
Voters in Bingham's district should recall his cowardly ass immediately. If not, vote to make sure the punk NEVER holds public office again!!!
Most states, and the United States government do not permit recall elections, let alone referendums or citizen ballot initiatives. Gives too much power to the people and is a check on the power of the politicians.
Pretty sure Wisconsin recently recalled 5 or 6 elected officials. It's possible alright, and should be used more often, IMO.
Recall is not an option in North Carolina, and Bingham has held this seat for 6 terms.
If the founding fathers believed in privacy in the 18th century enough to draft and certify the 3rd amendment, why can't conservatives, so called "strict constructionalists' think that way too.
All those who rally against "Obamacare" and how the big bad government should get their noses out of healthcare - guys, you're on the pro-choice side of things. There's a reason "tea"partiers stay away from the social issues - they agree with us darned libs.
And PS - if I don't show up to do my job unexplained, I don't get paid. How come this guy does? Sounds to me like he's getting paid without an honest day's work. Isn't that welfare?
If you learn nothing else during this fiasco other than the rethug fundies do not really understand the hypocrisy they live every day. They don't believe they are haters, they don't believe they are infringing on anyone's rights, all they are trying to do is help other folks live right. They're just at a loss to understand why you can't see their point. If you don't then therefore you must be evil and if you are evil you must be demonized, and in some cases murdered. But that's ok to them because it must have been the only way to exorcise your demons.
The right wing in this country has to be stopped. Keep your grubby paws of our woman you pricks or you will have holy hell to pay.
we need the ability to transplant a fetus into the anti-abortionists (i refuse to call them prolife since they want to ruin so many lives)
They certainly aren't pro-life. Most of them believe that the death penalty is moral. So now you can force a woman to give birth to a serial killer (for example) and then you can give them a lethal injection on the back end. Ah, America.
You can't be pro-life and sanction murder as an appropriate punishment for a doctor performing an abortion.
This is faith-based legislation, and is therefore unconstitutional. The feds should be coming down hard on these states. For the undermining of women's healthcare, and for passing laws (not faith-based) making it impossible for specific groups of people to exercise their *right* to vote, feds should absolutely be stepping in and saying no, you don't get to do this.
I see nothing in the constitution prohibiting faith based legislation just prohibiting the government from either establishing a religion or prohibiting the exercise of religious faith. Other than that there has been an awful lot of faith based legislation passed in our history. Any economic legislation is faith based since the value of our money is based only on the faith people have in the government (which for legal purposes means all citizens). Our money is only worth what we, as a group, agree it is. Wonder what's gonna happen when the righties figure that one out.
We women are facing an "anti-woman agenda" in this nation. Until we stand up like we did in the 60's and 70's this will continue to happen. I too remember clothes hanger abortions, one of my good friends almost died in 1971, something I will never forget!!!!
Maybe we should get to work on a gigantic toilet so we can flush these turds down it. Let's make it big enough so we can get Chris Christie and anyone smaller than him down the pipe.
they have such a thing. its at an amusement park. i think its called 'riptide'.
After 30 years living abroad (grew up in the midwest) and moving to NC a few years ago, I have been surprised by the strange things happening in state/federal gov't. Governor Perdue seems to be in a similar situation as the president, but her use of veto power shows she is doing whatever she can. Those who are calling for 'small government' are imposters...the only thing small about them is their thinking.
I feel bad for any woman that has to go through an unwanted pregnancy. As a guy I have no idea what they go through physically, mentally, or emotionally. Because of that simple fact, I have no right to judge them or tell them what they should do or how they should feel. I wish more politicains felt that way. More Republican "Big Government". What a bunch of hypocrites.
More attacks on women, and at a time when they least need it. This is shameful.
VOTE REPUBLICANS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
This truly is appalling. No one should have a right to tell another human being (man or woman) what to do with their body.
You might want to relay that thought to the Pope and his priests, the pastors, the Imans, the Rabbis, etc. It seems to me that Judiasm, Christianity and Islam have all be telling human beings what to do with their bodies for at least the last 4000 years.
My condolences to all women in NC who will be victimized by this law, and congratulations to Gov. Perdue for her outstanding courage.
vote republicans out!!!!!!
These TEA party extremist have soured the Republicans, Democrats, Independents and the general public! This radical group have side tracked the GOP and are forcing their narrow-minded views onto the people of America they purport to represent! This is one religious-minded radical group that wants to marginalize every minority much like Al Qaeda or the Taliban! Their rules apply to all but them. Each and every TEA party-er must be targeted for removal from the Republican ranks including the current leadership of this marginal group and the loudest mouths at the top of their food chain must be removed as soon as possible! We need to cut, cap and bounce them out of office!
