I know this is only, you know, economics, but Mark Zandi's chart on President Obama's new jobs plan suggests it might actually put people back to work. If Congress does nothing, Zandi says, we've got higher unemployment next year. If Congress passes the bill, we'd be a point lower.
Steve Benen rounds up the response from economists. "There are reasonable questions as to whether congressional Republicans even want to improve the economy at all, but if lawmakers have any interest in creating jobs and boosting growth, the American Jobs Act would work," he writes. "It's not everything I could have asked for, but it's an ambitious solution to a pressing problem that would a big difference."

A wise person once told me, “Never should on yourself or anyone else!” Now, say that ten times fast. Or say” You should pass this bill right away!”, five times, like President Obama did on Thursday night. The result of this admonition is the same, it gets the person’s back up who you are “should-ing”, and strengthens their resistance to oppose, rather than support, what it is you say they should do. It is simple human nature.
Now, President Obama knew, going in, that he was entering the Lions’ Den. His mistake in the presentation , however, was in holding out hope for the hopelessly opposed, and trying to shame them into doing something that may benefit the American people, but will not benefit their political agenda, both long and short term. After all, the Republicans in Congress already have jobs...their own, and they want to keep their jobs, and will go to whatever extremes are necessary to do so. They simply want to insure that President Obama loses his job in November of 2012, so it is not in their interest to do anything to save him from the loss of that job. So, they will find multiple excuses for not supporting the Jobs bill...and they will twist the truth to say that they have already proposed many jobs bills which the President and the Democrats in congress have rejected (translate that more tax cuts..) This is political bloodsport...pure and simple, and the sooner the President recognizes this inevitable fact, the sooner he may be able to save his own job by fixing the blame squarely on the shoulders of those responsible for the current political imbroglio..the recalcitrant Republicans in the do nothing Republican Congress.
That’s how Harry Truman saved his job in 1948, and the same principle applies in 2012. Call out the Boogeyman for who he, or they, are, and point the finger at them, repeatedly. This is what they have been doing to him ad nauseum on talk radio. Time to reverse polarity and fight fire with fire. If President Obama does not have the fire in his belly to do so, he will suffer indigestion for the next 14 months, all for naught, while in the end, he will fade away as a first and one termer.
The American people, and yes, those critically undecided Independent voters in the middle, already clearly understand one thing. He is not the one who has failed to extend the olive branch. All you have to do is look at the expression on John Boehner’s face during Obama’s speech to see where they are, and have been, at. They wouldn’t even give him the courtesy of setting up the speech for an earlier time, let alone the courtesy of a response. Boehner mumbled something about the American people being more interested in football, than in listening to a Republican response. Clearly, they think this is nothing more than an “Save Obama’s job” bill, and the more he entreats them, the more convinced they become. Time to move on, go past them, and take the case to the American people directly.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch Mc Connell quoted something from Albert Einstein about the definition of insanity being doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. He is right on that point, only the insanity is not in proposing jobs bills that the Republicans think are flawed from the start, the insanity is in believing that you can get a different result from an entrenched oppositional party that has made naysaying their signature response to anything this President may do, and de-legitimizing his status as President at every turn they can the sine qua non of their own success barometer.
Take a chapter out of the book of Harry. It is time to give the Republicans hell, Barry! Not Purgatory, not Limbo, but hell...and and don’t mince words or equivocate. Tell it like it is. To quote the immortal Harry S. Truman,” I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell. ... I just tell the truth and they think it's hell.” Tell them the truth Mr. President, and keep telling it until at last the truth sets you free. The only way to deal with this crowd is to send them packing in 2012. Sad, but that is just the way it is. Use the megaphone of the bully pulpit at every turn, and enlist your friends and Democratic comrades to do the same. That is the only formula for ultimate success.

Obama's mistake is creating evidence of how and why he thinks his jobs plan will work. If it fails, the GOP will point and laugh at the chart as showing him to be incompetent. The GOP never provides supporting evidence for why tax cuts on the wealthy will work. That way when the cuts fail to produce jobs there is no way to show their mistakes with hard data...on the weasel words used to sell the undocumented plan.
Perfect! It's true that when a former conciliatory person finally shows fight and fire that the enemy is thrown off balance. Maybe, just maybe,our President has a plan in place that we will soon see.

I listened to President Obama's speech with a mix of skepticism and interest. However, I'm a bit confused with a few things he's said. Perhaps you all here on this site can can help clarify these things for me:
1. President Obama said "Pass this Bill, tomorrow". What bill is he talking about? Does anyone have a copy of the Bill or can provide a link to it? Is this an existing HR or Senate Bill that is currently in Congress? If so, what is the Bill number so I can look it up?
2. President Obama said the Jobs Bill "is fully paid for." However, President Obama then said he will direct the Super Committee to find the savings to pay for the Bill. Isn't that just a bit of a whopper? I can see if the President said "I'm going to eliminate the USCG or PBS or USAID and the savings will be used to pay for this Bill," then that would make sense. The Bill is paid for with savings he's identified. But that's not what he said. President Obama's comment is like saying, "Buy me a new car, the cost of the car is fully funded," just as long as my boss agrees to give me $40,000 next week. So that would be a lie.
So, I'm eager to hear your feedback on these two items

In her interview of Mica, Maddow demonstrated how we should depoliticize this as much as possible. Sincerely, we are in a foxhole together now, and this is no time to score easy points (ratings or politics or otherwise) off of other Americans sharing the foxhole. It is not sucking up to anyone to appeal to our common interests so we can fight our way out of this dire emergency. Now is not the time to make gratuitous reference to past misdeeds or political affiliation.
Because if this is heavily politicized, America's unemployed is doomed to wait 14 months until we get a verdict that is not guaranteed to go in their favor.

Rachel did an amazing job with this interview. How she managed not to scream at Mica when he hemmed and hawed about putting money into the public schools -- I don't know how she does it. And saying "The country is counting on you" should be a great motivator. I do believe that voters will NOT look kindly on the Republicans if they refuse to work with President Obama's plan. Sure, the most rabid tea partiers would rather see him fail than see the economy improve, but there are bound to be more people, even more Republicans, who feel otherwise. The immediate response from Repubs was that it was only a temporary stopgap. This would be true if they don't follow through with an increased emphasis on updating our educational system here in the US and maintain regulation of those idiots in the banking industry who took our economy from the toilet seat to the septic tank. It's not the manufacturing of traditional products that will bring the US to the top again but the manufacturing of innovation.
It would really be refershing if the Democrats decide they were going to make it a party policy to not pass any legislation that ships jobs overseas and to pass legislation that rewards companies producing goods in the U.S.
"American made" is a topic that resonates with people all over the country and across class and party lines. It would win the election for them if they were serious but money is far too involved in politics for me to hold out any hope of this happening.
Finally, a Democrat has managed to use language effectively. This is the Jobs Act, not the Attempt to Relieve Unemployment Act, not the Recession Counterbalance Act, and not the Do Something Now Act. If a Republican decides to oppose it, what does he/she say? "I oppose the Jobs Act." "I voted against the Jobs Act." Those very sentences put him/her in a serious pickle, because the immediate implication to the listener is that said Republican opposes jobs. This will have a serious effect on those parts of the electorate who have not been paying attention for some time, but are starting to tune in now. (The rest of us know full well the only Republican plan is to see Obama defeated in 2012, and that they have not had any interest in curtailing unemployment in some time.) Plus, any ad campaign simply has to say "Candidate x opposed the Jobs plan." Simple, efficient, clear. No need to waste additional airtime. Bravo, I say.
Trust me, if the GOP-on-u party chooses to oppose the Jobs Act, they'll rebrand it. (Look at healthcare reform, which is now and forever known as "Obamacare".) And oppose it they will - how can they do otherwise. If even one unemployed American got a job as a result of this legislation, it would diminish their effort to "make Obama" a one-term president". (and I have noticed that almost no Republican or Tea Party member ever refers to President Obama by his title.
Trust me -- The GOP-on-u and Tbaggers will rebrand the Jobs Act when they oppose it. And oppose it they will -- they have already shown a devastating willingness to flush the US down the sewer rather than allow the Dems (especially President Obama) to accomplish anything.
How similar to that same speech about the stimulus almost three years ago, with all the so called smart economists saying we would be under 8 percent by now. Oops. So now a new round of economists (Keynesian) say that they think this will work. Oooh, that's a new one. Libs - in today's world the Keynes model WILL NOT WORK. And oh yea, a big part of his theory was SHORT TERM injection which was paid back relatively quickly. It did not mean to just keep printing and printing and printing.

Love the show, love you Rachel but as a liberal leaning independent, I'm having a hard time reconciling a couple of things...1) We gotta wait until the 19th for the numbers, if there really are any--didn't we recently have a problem with Congress signing first and reading later? and 2) If I have a problem with Immelt's appointment to the Jobs commission, how are the Republicans going to see this? Obama could have given about a 10 second speech. I'm cutting corporate taxes in half and eliminating capital gains taxes. The market would have gone up 500 points on Friday instead of down 300. Corporations would come back to the USA and hired more people. It's pretty simple but Obama just doesn't get it.

My guess is the latter would show more jobs in 2012 without spending another 450 billion we don't have.

If you give a corporation more money, it does not use it to hire people, UNLESS there is more demand from customers. Instead they pocket the money, but it does not translate to jobs.
The Bush Tax Cuts did exactly that, they gave money to corporations... where are the jobs? In fact that is what lead to this crisis.
The 2009 stimulus stopped a freefall. We lost 750,000 jobs in the period before that. The GNP was way down, and the 2009 stimulus stablized us keeping us from going into a full scale Depression. If anything, the 2009 Stimulus was not enough.
The only way to grow an economy is to put money into the hands of workers, that turn around and spend money. This causes corporations to then hire more people to build and provide further services.
Incentivising corporations to pull the dollars out of the US and create jobs elsewhere, is bleeding this country to death.

1. Close your TANF case and Volunteer to Receive Stimulus Checks up to
$500 based on your household size with the Mayor's 100 Hours In-Kind
program.
2. Participate while in jail with institutional jobs (20 to 50 cents per hour)
3. Fund raise with your school, church, or youth organization in our
Jobs 4 Teens program.
4. Job referrals and guaranteed job offers from Corey Miller Food
Foundation. Preference for felons, food stamp recipients, and homeless
persons. Apply to coreymillerfoodfoundation@gmail.com.
5. City-wide job fairs where residents can get rid of old junk for easy cash.
6. COMING SOON- Ford Barber School (kit and uniform included with Pell Grant).
7. If you close your food stamp case and volunteer to do your
community service with the City of Memphis we will match your food
stamp amount with cash bonuses on the first of every month.
8. These job programs will save the City of Memphis over $100 Million.
9. Area Community Centers will have mock elections for area mayors who
band the citizens together to raise the children of the area. This is
the Ford Heirs program.
10. The mayor's office is committed to providing the citizens with
self sufficiency referrals that will link them to government agencies,
churches, and non-profit organizations in the city to help them. (WIC,
commodities, farmer's market, soup kitchens, food pantries, #211,
etc.)
11. We will continue to support Backpack for Life to feed
underprivileged children every weekend and plan community (city-wide)
pot lucks for all ages.
12. We will provide FREE TRANSPORTATION for students linking area
community centers with area libraries (plus area parks in the
summertime).
