We're putting together the interview with President Carter for tonight's show, and we keep coming back to this part:
RACHEL MADDOW: Among the Republican candidates this year is someone who volunteered for your presidential campaign -- Michele Bachmann.
PRESIDENT CARTER: I know, and I appreciate that she helped me out!
We'll see you at 9 P.M. Eastern.

Oooohhh oh ooohh ohhh!!
I have to go take a shower!!!
I feel like I have just been brain-raped!
So, she wasn't always a complete loon. Something traumatic had to have happened, somewhere along the line, to turn her into the certified scatterbrain she seems to be today. Maybe marriage to whats-his-name drove her over the edge....
You know ... everything about Michelle Bachman suggests gender identity frustration.
Migraine. Powerful medication. Pray the gay away.
I wonder why all the frustration?
Are we all wet in de nile?
Good observation. A true humanitarian would have to pity those like her, and Palin too. It just seems like they have so much pent-up hatred, and then there's that "holier than thou" persona. Honestly, ALL republicans seem to exhibit those qualities to one degree or another. Yeah, that's a generalization. I'm stayin' with it.
When he was running, Carter was seen as an Evangelical Christian (which, technically, he was -- this only goes to show, it isn't just the Republican party that has drifted right; even the Evangelicals weren't as far right at the time).
Yes- she got the shot!
You cannot pray the gay away. That is just insulting to think that one can change their entire person. It's not a funny joke. It's not a valid and its wrong how it's used to destroy a person's self worth.
No, you missed it completely. She was always an ambitious scatterbrain, searching for an identity. In her world, it was religion. And education, but I think a lot of that was secondary- a means to an end. Remember, Rosalyn Carter was the first openly activist religious First Lady, and Jimmy admitted to having "sinned in his heart". or was it lusted? Either way, it's better just to do it. But people sought change, and convinced themselves conservatism was the answer. Reagan came in, reversed all manner of rules concerning energy consumption, trade, deficit spending, military buildup, and the voodoo economics of trickle-down, and they sold it as "Morning in America." Look at where debt started to really rise, don't forget the crash of '87, or the Keating 5 S&L disaster. These were just dress rehearsals for our current mess. Why she married Marcus Bachmann I imagine had something to do with him being the first man that didn't drool all over her, plus he probably convinced her that he was the smartest man on the planet. Probably quoted her some scripture, charmed her parents, and didn't kiss her until after the 15th bible reading, but I'm just speculating here. It might've been 17.
oy vey.
Watching the show. Oops, Rachel mispronounced Mrs. Carter's name! Happens all the time!
Great show. I think that the young people have not much of an idea of what's what when it comes to these guys here. Wondering Who dies the tech in that place........ there's aBoston Tech thing I'm not going to but I'm trying to push someone in that direction. With company name (uno). How's WHhat's her name doing?
GREAT interview! Carter is a true gentleman & as President was a ahead of his time. I grew up in an evangelical home and he was considered 'very liberal' and not liked for that reason. I am so glad he talked about the importance of separating a candidate's religion/faith from their politics.
Oh my God! Thank you for having President Jimmy Carter. I loved that president then. I miss his sensible thoughts on the nation and world. I love Rachel Maddow.
I visited Georgia earlier this year and the Carter Library. I love President Carter! Thank you for having his sensible voice on the air tonight. I miss the sanity that he brought to the table. I love Rachel!
How fortunate we all are to have President Jimmy Carter to pitch for President Obama. He's got some age on him but he's quick, alert, extremely intelligent and a real mensch.
Carter has some personality characteristics which only come with age and experience. He is a Democrat to the core.
Jimmy Carter said that he believed the Jobs bill would pass in some form. I finally feel reassured.
If you (Rachel) were alive when Carter was president, You must have been playing with your toy car in the house or pedaling one in your yard. I remember the micromanagement, the 14 percent inflation, the gas station lines. Carter was the worst president ever. ( He is the best ex-president with his involvement in Habitat for Humanity) ....but I wouldn't ask him about political analysis ...ever. And analyzing current candidates ....you make a mockery of political analysis.
I really, really, really try not to reduce myself to things like like this, but if I knew where you were at, I would take one of my toy cars (I collect those, too), and I would shove it up your a---. And it would probably horrify the people this forum attracts, so I'd pick a place where they wouldn't have to see it. My apologies, everyone- this guy went too far. I'm out of here- I'm sorry I lost my temper.
As the United States had prior experience in China with what happens when the government that America supported is replaced by another government that is suspicious of America's past involvement in that country, I was wondering why President Carter didn't ordered the evacuation of all embassy personnel from Iran when Ayatollah Khomeini took control of the Iranian government by ending the Pahlavi Dynasty which the United States had supported?
I recall a college professor from an "International Relations" course I took discussing the 1949 takeover of mainland China from Chiang Kai-shek by the Communists led by Mao Zedong. That the United States did "not" remove some of its Embassy personnel when the Communists came to power. The professor said that the American Embassy personnel were treated harshly by the Communists. From this previous experience with an hostile government, President Carter should not had left the staff at the American Embassy in Teheran when Ayatollah Khomeini took control of the Iranian government.
I love Pres. Carter. He is a good man who has done a lot of good things for the people of this great nation. He is one of the few presidents who understand what public service really means. He cares about the people. You cannot say any of that about a Republican.
All this from Jimmy Carter, arguably the worst president in US history. He wouldnt know the right thing to do if it bit him.
Pres. Carter works with Habitat for Humanity. I think he knows something about doing the right thing. Something a Republican would never do.
