Mitt Romney policy flip-flops last week alone:
(1) Payroll taxcut extension (was con, now pro)
(2) Life-begins-at-conception constitutional amendments (was pro, now con)
And as of 3PM ET Friday, he's apparently for privatizing the VA.
Start the flip-flop countdown clock? Or will he stick with this one?

Mitt Romney checks which way he thinks the political wind is blowing and reacts accordingly. He has no soul, no center, no beliefs at all. This isn't to defend the crazy right wing nut true believers. But Romney is the ultimate opportunist.
Yes, and it was clear he wanted the presidency when he shoved Jane Swift out of the running for the governorship of MA.
In Montana we have a senator like that - unfortunately he's been back there forever & is even on the Super Committee.
Rachel.... Love you and the show... He'll flip-flop by Wednesday.....
Do you think it's going to take that long? BTW, Rachel, love you too!
Loving the fact that this guy is the frontrunner in the polls now for the nomination. Obama really ought to be able to chew him up and spit him out like cheap nasty bubble gum. Mitt/Gingrich ticket in 2012? Got a feeling that will do nothing for independents and deflate the rabidly conservative GOP base... all we need is to get the stridently leftist Obama I voted for in 2008 back and we'd have a chance to kill and bury the Republican Party at long last...
Stephen Colbert said it best when discussing Gov. Perry's flubs making him appear "more human"....He said, "Mitt Romney would kill for that...or at least power down and restart!"
Stephen was really on a roll that night wasn't he? I haven't laughed that hard in a long time!
Agreed, ladies...Stephen Colbert is one of the 2 funniest men on television and that line had me on the floor, too.
Remember, the primary season hasn't started yet...and ANYthing can happen in a horserace.
TheĀ question is,' Do you need a fixed position to get the nomination ?'.When the rest of the field are so lousy it seems you don't .It's alarming that the republicans could potentially field a candidate who is this clueless for the job of the most powerful person in the world.......OH forgot.....they already did
are you gonna start posting on google+?
Depends on how hard the press hits him with it. Any chance vets (with cameras) will show up at his next event and ask him some hard questions???
Romney has a lot in common with Walmart. He continuously has Roll Backs for whatever he wants the public to buy.
Romney is doing all these flip flops to get the nomination. He hasn't figured out his strategy for what to say about the flip flops during the regular campaign. Maybe he assumes that the economy is enough to propel him into the White House. That is possible, but not probable. In the end, no one will trust him because he has no principles. The only thing Romney hasn't flip flopped is his name.
His biggest problem seems to be winning the primary vs winning the election. Because the conservative wingnuts on the right are so far out there, he has to say certain things to even get nominated. He also realizes that if he gets too extreme now, he can't possible win over the centrists in the general election. I think that's what's causing most of the flip flopping.
It does, however, work in our favor in that no one will trust him because they have no idea what he stands for. How can you believe he will do a particular thing if he gets elected when he can't maintain the same position from one week to the next?
I hope you guys keep an office pool running.
To me this has been absolutely hilarious to watch! These candidates are so busy tearing each other down in their five million and one debates, that by the time they get to the generals, Obama is going to wipe the floor with them. There is no way they are going to do well in a debate with him.
I don't know why Romney is even doing this. How can you have the confidence to go up against Obama when you got the nomination by default. Every other candidate has managed to implode & the GOP doesn't even want him in the race. Weird!
"There's never an egg timer around when you need one." (movie "The American President")
Of course he will. Any man unable to figure out something as personally important as where he lives cannot possibly be expected to figure out anything else.
But don't tell him this. Were he to actually figure out where he lives he might become a real threat.
Flip flopping has become the norm in politics. One could just as easily make a list of the things President Obama has flip flopped on since taking office. Worthy topic but applies equally to both sides.
The difference between him and Obama? Romney actually acknowledges his flip-flops. Obama keeps silent about his. And so does almost everyone else.
M. Fehrman - Care to provide any examples?
The blog provided 2 for Romney in the past WEEK, and there have been many more throughout the campaign. And I have not seen an example of Romney acknowledging his flips. Rather he seems to pretend that he never thought any differently.
The difference between propaganda and the truth is factual evidence in support of the statement. At this point I see no truth in your propaganda.
My point in this post was that Romney, in his "flip-flops", is actually questioned by the press about his positions, and states them. Often those statements are different or contradictory from his previous statements and he is then called out by the press as being a "flip-flopper", which he is.
Obama gets a free ride on his contradictions. The press and many of his supporters engage in selective and temporary memory. His refusal to deal with closing Guantanamo, to follow the laws of this country regarding handling and trial of prisoners, his statements prior to his election regarding immigration reform as opposed to his actual record number of deportations, his position regards the Bush tax cuts for the rich, which have now become the Obama tax cuts, his position on the Patriot Act which strips Americans of many of their civil rights, and which he now uses to at least the extent the Bush administration used it, his statement about getting his "comfortable shoes" on to walk on the line with labor and then his total silence about the labor rights stripping laws in Wisconsin and other states, his promise of health care reform with a public option and the piece of crap law we actually got which only benefits the insurance companies .... and on, and on, and on.
I'm not saying Romney is not a "flip-flopper". I'm saying so is Obama. Both should be held accountable for their position changes. And, that is not "propaganda". It's my opinion. Last time I checked, I still had the right to state it.
People misunderstand what a flip flop IS.
IE: When Obama said he would close the prison in Cuba and then found it wasn't as easy as he had thought....THAT is NOT a flip flop. Congress passed legislation that prevented it from happening.
A flip flop is a changing of one's FIRMLY HELD BELIEF to a FIRMLY HELD BELIEF that is the complete opposite. ie Abortion..Gay rights..etc
Mitt's positions on both sides of a plethora of issues make him the poster child for flip flop.
To include Obama in the same discussion as Mitt is ridiculous.
Rachel,
Like everyone says Romney will say anything to get the nomination. I hate to say a person is despicable but this person needs to take a look at himself. Why doesn't his family tell him to stop. He needs to say "I am going to stick with my principles and let the chips fall where they may." I know he will never say that though because he wants to be president so badly. The other thing I wanted to say Rachel is about Jim Demint I don't know if I spelled his name correctly but I heard what you said about him Friday. What I would like to say is how dare he make a statement like that. One American is no more important than another, well when he and all the rest of them wanted young men and women to volunteer to go to war in Iraq and Afangistan he was praising these Americans. Everybody was so patriotic, they could not say enough about how wonderful these young soldiers were. Our military needs to be honored and respected which is right and fair, but when people use them for their own political reasons and then turn on them when they no longer need them well, it is just evil. He should be ashamed to show his face in public after saying what he said. I do not think he cares about anyone getting a job, he like Mitch McConnell only want President Obama out, and any lawmaker allowing soldiers or anyone else to get jobs are "anathema" to them
Republicans aren't stupid. They know that there's a certain percentage of people who will vote against the President when the economy is bad. They don't have to defend themselves. They don't need a perfect candidate, just a malleable one. (Is that not Romney all over?) Who cares if they like him. He is desperate for THEM to like HIM, which ought to be good enough for the money people to sign on.
Then all they have to do is point a great big economic finger at Obama, distract as many people with cultural issues as they can, and rally the base and hope that's enough to knock over the incumbent.
We keep hoping rational debate's going to win the day.
We have been wrong about that of late.
Why is that?
you have a very courteous and considerate group of bloggers here, ms maddow.
