I think the only thing you can extrapolate from Virginia is that regardless of who they vote for at the state level at the federal level they are going to vote for the person who is least likely to close or severely shrink whatever agency they work for or depend on for employment. I am not sure how well this translates to the rest of the country. When candidates start threatening to close entire federal agencies this is not going to go unnoticed by VA voters, even if they don't work for said agency they know someone who does.
Republicans are just attempting to push the envelope as far as they can with their pet projects. If all those who are different aren't as "good" as they are, well then what is the problem with eliminating those who can't pass muster. But these white, anglo saxon, protestant rich folks have been the victim of all these lesser groups for too long, they are only righting the scales of justice. It is only right that rich white anglo saxon males control the world, every other form of life is just not up to the job.
