Three things about Rick Perry staying in the race:
1) The picture he tweeted today: "And the next leg of the marathon is the Palmetto State...Here we come South Carolina!!!"
2) An expanded caption of sorts, by way of Christy Hoppe at the Dallas Morning News: "Griffin Perry just told me #RickPerry spoke with his wife this morning after a good jog cleared his head and they're onto S. Carolina."
3) This report, from Robert T. Garrett at the Dallas paper:
I called Perry spokesman Mark Miner. No answer. I then called Perry press person Catherine Frazier. This time, I somehow was connected, though she didn't say hello. I heard Miner telling her, "He tweeted we're going on to South Carolina. Every reporter in the world is calling."
The line then went dead, and in further calling, I could reach neither spokesperson nor Perry adviser Ray Sullivan.
Mr. Perry shows at 5.7 percent in the Real Clear Politics average of South Carolina polls.

Just face it lil Ricky - you've had your 15 minutes of fame now go back to Texas and thrill them some more!!
No, please, not back to Texas. I think maybe even some of the dumbest around here may have learned something about him during this experience. (Note, I said "some.")
Agreed...NOT BACK HERE TO TEXAS!
WE DON'T WANT HIM BACK!
NO RETURNS -- NO REFUNDS!!!!!!
But he's already said he don't like Carolina barbecue...WE don't want him!!!!
We with some intelligence in Texas do not want the man back! I say send to Alaska with Palin! They would fit together enough to make a 1/2 a brain!
Dear Texans all,
Nothing personal, I loved Molly Ivins and Anne Richards, but first you gave US Bush, then Shrub, now "lil" Ricky - as an American I'm embarrassed and think that maybe it's time you all secede and take them idiots with you......
ZZ Top, I am BEGGING you to let Perry use "Legs" as his new campaign song.
Um, did I read that right? Perry is back in?! I feel so out of the loop. What a silly paper tiger! Let's all go hug our maple syrup in solidarity!
I dunno. Maybe he was waiting for Bachman to bow out, so she reversed herself, then he reversed himself? Do any of these people consider their actions before uttering them? The GOP field this year is such a second and third tier of political yokels. Thank goodness for the primary as a vetting process.
Tho I still think Our Corporate Overlords plan to insert a spoiler candidate (read, adult) in the convention process, when it becomes more than obvious what a disaster these Keystone Cops are (Our Corporate Overlords realize already that it is a disaster, but in true Masters of the Universe fashion, they will strategize that a GOP Convention popular acclaim vote is the best way to put a corporate proxy candidate on a thunderbolt path to run against Obama).
Santorum needs to rapidly consolidate the religious right and raise buckets of cash if he is to have a chance in Florida. The longer Perry stays in, the "cultural conservatives" will remain divided, Santorum will continue his abysmal fundraising, and volunteers won't show up. With Perry giving every sign of leaving, I had high hopes for Santorum expounding on the evils of masturbation on the genocidal effects of birth control pills and IUDs. Sadly, this morning it looks like Rachel's staff will be denied months of fun designing segments to lampoon his honestly held positions. Much dimmer chances for Santorum. Now, only if Santorum can get some big guns from the Christian coalition to endorse him, he is going to get creamed in Florida.
My Ouija board reveals that the Corporate backers who gave Perry money (and now are instead fully behind Romney) all asked Perry to have heart and to not knuckle under.
The lunkhead believed them, not understanding they are playing him for the fool he truly is.
So if Santorum does not blow up within 2 weeks like all the others, he will be annihilated in Florida without funding and an army of united religious right voluteers. Will Fox step in and help Santorum? Who knows if Ailes will wholeheartedly fall in line with Murdoch's tweet about Santorum. I doubt it. Romney probably considers the flavor of the week self detonation of Santorum the safe bet. I don't because I think Romney underestimates how literalistically these folks read scripture. Many on the far right sincerely believe that the Mormons are a "cult", which is code for "satanic" cult. Santorum on the other hand has a very convincing story (see this bio for example) for "faithful" culture warriors on the far right. He could get them energized- that is if he has the dollars to get his message out.
Wow, John, what an interesting idea. They are backing multiple sides in the primaries?! Maybe I was just too slow to realize it. Profiteers back both sides in wars. We know lobbyists work both parties.
But what is to be gained from creating additional in-fighting, prolonging the appearance of disorganization, disarray, and general confundedness?
You say they are working an angle, playing Perry (and ultimately Santorum too) for fools, patsies, straw men. The person in the bike race who breaks wind (heh) for (at) the star in the Tour de France?
Real paper tigers, then? Santorum is already blowing up in New Hampshire, insulting people at campaign events.
I still can't feature how the big moneybags and wannabe Masters of the Universe GAIN from the crowded field of Keystone Cops.
Let him spend all that Super Pac campaign money. Perry's ego can be a useful economic stimulus for South Carolina. He'll maybe even reach 6%!!
What happened to New Hampshire? Another “Oops” moment?
LOL
well they pick McCain he came in fourth,,, so guess Perry is trying to see if fifth will work as well.
I assume he is back in because he thinks he can get Bachmanns people?
The Doctor is IN: Ron Paul 2012!!!
You're right. The Doctor is INsane. My problem is that of all the good ideas Libertarians have, and with many of which I agree, they in general and the good Dr in particular are weak when it comes to follow through. It seems to often they think of something they would like to eliminate and never bother to ask themselves, "If we do that, then what would happen?" Their ideas exhibit the depth of a parking lot puddle.
That pic kind of looks like Gary Busey's mugshot. I bet his hairstylist will be the first of his staff to quit.
Don't be so hard on Perry. If he stays in the race with Gingrich, they will deprive Romney and Santorum of support and money making it harder for everyone to continue. Perry has a lot of money to counter Romney. Gingrich hates Romney and is staying in just to keep attacking him. Santorum has very little money but he may get a boost from Murdoch's empire. Paul has a hard core group of supporters. The longer this circus goes on, the less likely Romney is going to win the nomination. Whoever wins the nomination is going to have to bring all these factions together to win the election. I don't see that happening if these primaries continue without a clear cut winner.
Let me bold and predict Romney will be the nominee. Then, he will go on and beat Obama. The issue is the economy and Obama doesn;t have a clue
Good luck with that. With your vote, I hope he'll have at least 8.
I think people can only vote once, no matter how many personalities they may have. Mitt Romney probably learned that the hard way.
This song immediately came to mind: New GOP Theme Song

It's like, was he FORCED into taking that?
"DAMMIT RICK, stop cry-jogging! You're going to win! Repeat after me!"
*sob* "I'm going to whnnhnn.."
"I'M GOING TO WIN!"
*sniff* "I'm going to win..."
"Now take this campaign photo so we can tweet it. Raise that thumb up high and say WE ARE GOING TO SOUTH CAROLINA!"
"Whhee er going to Souf Croliner...."
It makes sense, in a perverse sort of way.
But I could be wrong. Perry might simply be delusional.
I think Perry should hold out for a Supreme Court appointment. He can't be much dumber than Clarence Thomas.
Mike, good point. Still, at least Thomas keeps his mouth shut during oral arguments under the guise of better to remain silent and be thought an idiot than open your mouth and dispell all doubts, never having asked a question during his entire tenure on the bench (I think that's true).
But could Perry keep his mouth shut? "I have two questions of counsel. The first is are you sure? And, second is, uhm, ah, oops! I forgot it."
I vote for you "delusional" option.
Looking at the picture I think the caption should be "'Nothin' like a nite at N*Head to clear the mind for the task ahead,' Perry said."
Anita must've been truly pissed off that Ricky blew her chance at living in the White House.
Would not have wanted to be Ranger Rick when he walked back into the hotel room last night!!!!!
I say keep going Rick! At least until you've spent all of that Koch money!
Perry and his money will be great for s. carolina's economy. But then again, the texicans really do need him to break up the public school system and develop a better system of servitude to the energy overlords.
"Clear his head"?!?!?! What's up there to clear???
Broke back mountain anyone ?...
He looks as if he were hit by a garbage truck and his self righteous wife should question his use of spandex.
Who goes running on farm land next to a lake in full running gear ?..
If you ask me this looks a little too staged ?...
are there no running tracks in Texas ?...
I bet any money he is holding a portable G.P.S. device in his left hand..
This guy makes a boulder rock look smart... (no insult to rocks intended)..
Can't he just go back to his $14k a month ranch & SHUT UP!!! He's making all us Texans look bad. Not to mention the tax burden for all of us to support his feeble attempt to follow the weasel.
Got a funny story about SC. I was going to get married in the court house in Aiken, SC in 1970. Went to the courthouse to get papers filled out, as my fiance was in Ft. Gordon GA. Went to the courthouse, it was closed "due to holiday." Hm, it was about June 2 or 3. Wondered what holiday? Driving through Aiken, SC, got stopped because I could not cross the parade route. Parade? finally went to a gas station, and asked, "Why its Jefferson Davis's birthday? Don't you know anything?" Courthouse closed, parade?
Went back (remember 1970), got the papers filled out the next day, and the marriage license said, "Mr. ____________— and Miss ______________, their race is _____________." I guess they didn't believe in mixed marriages. When did Loving V. Virginia happen? They are quite a different group of people in the Aiken, North Augusta area.
1967. Maybe they just had a crate of old forms to get through. Nah.
Perry's giving it a shot. At least until Saturday Night/Sunday Morning.
As much as I hate to say it, I'd rather hate him back here in Texas. I think it's better to bite this bullet and have him ruin just one state instead of them.
While I feel sorry for Texas, how about Minnesota? We not only got TPaw back, now we got Bachman back and her district is just nutty enough to vote both of them back into some seat.
God help us.
i know how you feel. i live in tx. and i pary the state as whole wakes-up and get this man out of office. enough is enough, no enough has gotten to be tooooo much
