Reuters today looks at the future of Occupy -- occupying the election, occupying the economy, occupying culture as a persistent meme. They don't get around to occupying fracking, one of my favorites, but they do talk about foreclosure defense in the form of Occupy Our Homes:
In December protesters launched Occupy Our Homes, a bid to take back foreclosed homes. Occupiers took up residence in a home in Oakland, California and one in Brooklyn, New York, that day, demanding that lenders renegotiate mortgages for the homeowners. National Occupy Our Homes organizer Matt Browner Hamlin said protesters had set a goal of over 100 such "actions" around the country in the next few months.
Add to that list Occupy Birmingham, Alabama, where neighbors camped out in a local family's yard to try to save them from foreclosure. As the Wards tell their story, it sounds like a complicated nightmare that's not of their making. What's simple is the human desire to help them.

See that's why I stopped watching fox, because they don't show any good deeds like this.
I don't watch them because they don't think deeds like this are good.
Best nickname I've seen yet on this blog, and I want to associate myself with your comment, I tend to agree with your analysis.
What they need is a good attorney and a halfway competent judge. Unfortunately when you go into Alabama looking for justice that's what you get: "just us."
Biggest problem in America is the "Just Us System." Class Warfare is a Reality, and the war is waged by the Wealthy against the peasants.
When are people going to learn that the internet is full of scam artists. Is being gullible and stupid now a defense. When you sign documents, you have a responsibilty to know what you are signing. They should have realized once the term " lease to purchase" was mentioned, they were in trouble.
In this country you are in trouble whenever you are asked to sign your name to anything particularly given the amount of usury, fraud, and other crappy business practices have become legal, normal and widespread over the past 30 years of selling our national soul to the highest bidder. It is only a matter of time before the numbers in debtors prisons will be be higher than the number of drug prisoners.
Just know what you're getting into. Read the documents. And don't get in over your head.
This is one of my favorite Occupy events, to occupy a home that's being foreclosed. I would like the media to report this kind of story more often.
I have a couple of relatives that might need them, unfortunately. We are in no position to be of much help- money-wise.
The video at the top doesn't quite explain that they were victimized by what they thought was a reputable agent. They actually went through their attorney, who referred them to someone who referred them to the man who swindled them out of their life savings and I'm willing to bet, they won't be the only ones. http://youtu.be/murC1XlHshs
and for those that want to help here's the link to sign the petition!
http://occupybirmingham.org/sign-the-petition-tell-bank-of-america-the-wards-wont-go/
The ward family has spent thier life savings on this home. Bank of America where is your morality ? Bank of America it is up to you to give this family the opportunity to pay for what it rightfully theirs.
Thank you so much for blogging about this important issue. The Wards are wonderful people who are just trying to save their home. Partially due to your coverage, Bank of America is sending out feelers for negotiation. We want BofA to be a good neighbor. The whole neighborhood came out in support of the Wards. Homes for people, not for banks! Keep up the good work, Rachel!
If Bank of America works something reasonable out for the Wards, i.e. normal monthly payments, paid in full title deed with their name on it, as it should be; maybe this will open the communication gap with other families going through the same thing with Bank Of America. Maybe other families will feel BoA can be trusted again, and just maybe BoA will live up to it's slogan; helping people redeem their homes would be a HUGE step in the right direction for consumer confidence. THINK ABOUT THAT BANK OF AMERICA !!!!
It really disheartens me to see comments from people who put more trust in a bank than their fellow citizens, especially considering robo-signing, bailouts, and other recent events surrounding the banking industry. People are scammed every day and this is a great example. You blame them because they trusted the people they were doing business with to be honest? Shouldn't you be able to expect that, especially in such large transactions? And even if you don't trust them and try to read everything, it's full of so much legalese and it's 40 pages long, in small print. How is the typical citizen supposed to be able to take all that in and understand it? You get an attorney IF you can afford it. That's what the Wards did. They still got screwed. So don't blame them. Follow the money and you always find the culprits.
Love you comment BhamJoel. Most people just want an honest transaction without hidden microscopic language. Most people just want to be assured that if they do their part, banks, lenders, loan officers, realtors, etc. will do their part. An honest transaction with honest consumers should be the battle cry of America. The montra of American consumers should be "give us an honest business man and we will do honest business with him". Who really has the time to figure out all the loop holes of a dishonest business transaction, and why should we even have to think about THAT !!! THE BIBLE TELLS US, "THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL" Why don't people believe GOD ??? "The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth" They'd better believe IT !!! Just let the honest working class citizen get the same considerations as the rich and famous, after all what's the real difference--- MONEY ???!!!???!!!???
LOVE YOUR COMMENT BhamJoel !!!
