America's #1 Export!!!
America's largest export is Gasoline. The oil industry exports surplus gasoline so that it can keep the prices artificially high domestically and add another sales source of income. The amount of raw material that is being refined is huge and can cause more cancer in the United States and damage to the Chesapeake Bay.
The oil companies get this oil from the Persian gulf without having to pay for the cost of America's Military. Further, Exxon Mobile hasn't even paid taxes for the last 2 years. Is it any wonder why our defense budget is higher than every other countries budget in the world. And, has tripled since 1998. Is it any wonder that the Republicans are against the EPA, global warming, damage to the ecology and regulation. Hampering oil production is the primary reason.
Now we also know the reason for the Republicans to rush to get Obama's 2 month decision to approve the XL Pipeline. The conservatives want this. Because they don't have any concern for America's health. Their only concern is to do the bidding of the oil companies who own them and who want the politicians to protect their profits and expanded oil distribution to other countries through this effort.
We are exporting more gasoline, diesel and jet fuel than any other export product in America. Meanwhile the entire Republican Mantra is no job killing regulation. And with these refineries there are limits on how much poison that you can put into the air. When Bush would talk about how exports were up I could never figure it out when everything else wasn't. Manufacturing had collapsed in this country including my own company so I didn't get it. Now I do get it. Oil. This is so staggeringly unbelievable.
Other countries don't want to refine their own oil because it is a dirty and smelly business. That said oil companies profits will increase and so will the amounts on cancer in our country. But what will all of this do for the job market?
This issue is another example of the news media not informing the American People.
Jack Murphy
Yes. It's another example why we DON'T want to build that pipeline from Canada to Houston - where they will refine the oil into gasoline and then ship it to China. I kept asking, when the pipeline was first talked about, why we needed it to go to the Port of Houston? All the supporters kept saying the oil was for America, from our friends in Canada. Good thing my bull@!$%# detector is in working order!
A conspiratorial argument is being made here, and I would like to suggest and additional one that will make more sense to those whose support we'll need for a broad coalition against the XL pipelines and other initiatives of big oil.
It's the simple economics argument that we all know. Oil unlike other energy sources is a global economy. Drill baby drill does not bring down prices at the pump, because consumption in China and India is outstripping what the oil industry could produce even if their most wild wet dream of governmental support came true. Do the math- look at the most rosey predictions of the production possible if we went all in. Oil prices would still go up.
So the argument we make is, why play a game that you know you will lose. Play the game you can win. Electricity cannot be easily exported to global markets, so generate that... Windmills, solar, and so on. And actively block any technology that seeks to make it more exportable- such as conversion to hydrogen.
OK - let's stop our #1 export. That should really help our trade imbalance. And windmills and solar panels will not propel our 18-wheelers (which deliver a large percentage of our goods/food) and most passenger vehicles for any long distance. Oil prices will not go down, obviously since each passing day more people in developing countries like India and China (with a couple Billion people between them) start driving cars for the first time. So let some other country's oil firms sell it to the masses. I understand a lot of people think our oil industry is evil and makes too much profit, but we are the energy (oil) pigs of the planet and I would rather have the jacked up profits stay here where it might help a few people versus it being sold/exported by someone else where no $$ stays here. A little oversimplified, but I think the alternative is also.
I am surprised at you Skip- that is oil industry cool aid. Look at the figures Skip- you have fallen for a typical shell game routine. Carefully read an article on this, for example this USAToday piece.
Here are your test questions:
Are we a Fuel importer or exporter? Oh but how can this possibly be Skip? The answer is that you have to look at the total national oil industry balance sheet. And guess what- it is a big loser for the US, and we are going into the hole faster than that. We have become far more dependent on foreign energy than we were 30 years ago, and it is due to the Oil industry lobby, plain and simple.
They don't have to care about the fate of the US, skip. It is not in their economic interest.
The patriotic thing to do is become energy independent, not more dependent on foreign suppliers.
You are also technically incorrect on the heavy transportation issue. Heavy electric vehicles are already in use by the Army and public transit. Not that trucking is especially more efficient than rail regardless whether you are fueled by diesel or electric.
John,
Your numbers are probably correct. I was just being a devils advocate to Jack Murphy's statement (which he has brought up more than once that we export more gasoline). As for the heavy electric vehicles, I would like to know more about that. I just can't see tens of thousands of heavy electric trucks on our highways anytime soon.
Numbers were from the article pointed to.
The Army's interest is not the survival of the planet as you might suspect but stealthy operation (low noise, no heat or smoke emissions), both tracked and those weird heavy supply vehicles they use. The GM motors they use are the same used for those hybrid buses you see in some cities. Lots of torque. If I find a current article, I'll post it.

The line that stands out for me:
Ah, the pure innocence of focusing only on profit, and nothing else. Doing it is not a sin - but ignoring the consequences, for the community and for the nation, yes, that IS a sin.
It's OK to fire the company managers who were providing "lousy service" running the company. But the employees who worked on the line and lost their jobs? Were they providing lousy service? And the businesses that depended on the purchases that those employees made? Were they providing lousy service? And the public employees - the teachers, police, firemen - who relied on the tax base that was supported by those employees? Were they providing lousy service?
Is it a sin to denigrate all of them because the company managers weren't good at their jobs? Oh yes, I think it is.
By the way, for your moment of geek, this is truly fantastic news:

You might hear the term "war for minds" in your internet travels. And as this is done by elites, including the political types, to the masses, here appears to be a great resource list for further investigation, for the goal of mass awareness and elimination of such barbarism:

Not only does this constitute coercion, duress, entrapment—crimes—but, indeed, is rape and torture of one's divine essence and radical destruction of right to thrive and actualize one's potential to supreme bliss, love, joy, truth, vitality. I have not encountered very many who are truly alive any more. The masses are affected to a large degree and oblivious. Educate yourself.
Just watched Rock Center on the Mexican Romney family. Brian Williams said "George Romney could be the poster boy for The Dream ACT". Great line, I think. Wonder when Mitt will acknowledge these really nice people. They are an impressive group as told by the interviewer. Adds much to the Romney story for me. I had no idea he was trying to build a fence to keep his family out. (joke)
