I saw this on the Facebook page of one of my politically conservative friends. I have no idea where this came from, but I know a caption contest when I see one! Have at it. (and if you have any info about this image, that would be fun, too). Bonus for spotting historical inaccuracies. Our Senior Producer Cory Gnazzo noticed a really big one.
(Adding: The painting is by Jon McNaughton.)

Q tweeted me the link yesterday. It lets you zoom in and read annotations (which criticize both Democrats and Republicans, from a very odd, skewed perspective).

So wait- Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant upheld the US Constitution, but Obama stepped on it? Interesting
Andrew Johnson is also on the "upholding the plight of the common man" side. Yeah there are no racial undertones to this painting at all.
Hello pgw78,
It's a good thing you don't understand.
Count the number of dark skinned individuals.
Just one person with dark skin abusing / ignoring the plight of white people.
Difficult for intelligent people to understand what racists are talking about.
Racist gibberish sounds confusing and odd if you are not.
Well put! I've learned some things about what racist people tell their children to instill hatred and fear. It makes my head bend. Such vile filth.
Of course PBO is stepping on the Constitution! He's trying to keep it in tact. Those nasty people called GOP'ers want to eliminate ALL amendments. Women-practice your cooking, cleaning, pregnancy, being barefoot and in the house all day skills. We're going back to the 19th Century-as a start. Oh yeah, do not register to vote, women won't be allowed to do that, also won't be allowed to work except as a nurse or teacher, but only if you're single. Can't wait! Please wake me up from this nightmare!!!!!!
"Ok, Ok, you won the bet.... yes you can find sympathy in the dictionary between sh*t and syphilis.... but you didn't have to throw your winnings in his face"
CaSeattle, it would be too difficult for the little woman to work. With no contraception, she'll have 6-20 kids at home, gotta feed and clothe in feed sacks.
If you read the artist's annotations, Crackhead, you'll see there's a lot more to it than that. He's got a strange, complex agenda involving the debt, the value of the dollar, and a bunch of other stuff.
The most obvious thing about the painting is that Obama is stepping on the Constitution. The artist barely even bothers annotating that, merely observing something to the effect of "How would the founding fathers feel if they could see this?" He seems to assume that anyone paying attention would understand implicitly how and why Obama is stepping on the Constitution.
Racism may play a role in that. It doesn't necessarily have to. I don't think racism is what motivated Alex Ross to paint Bush as a vampire attacking the Statue of Liberty.
The "Forgotten Man" on the bench is another matter. The artist says he's supposed to represent the American everyman, and that there's no racial message intended. You could say that there's at least subconscious racism in the artist's choice of a White person as the downtrodden and "forgotten" everyman. On the other hand, the census bureau says the US population is over 70% White and the guy's skin had to be some color.
All in all, I'd say the artist is nuts. And he clearly doesn't actually understand the Constitution and has no idea of the history of the Articles of Confederation. Racism may well be involved, but it's far from his only problem.
Actually, come to think, I bet the guy is a Ron Paul supporter. That would explain quite a bit.
Yup.
Sometimes racism is so subtle it actually seems attractive.
That's the Ron Paul appeal.
Legalize racism with a little prostitution and drugs thrown in to sweeten the pie.
This comes out of the bizarre Libertarian delusional belief system premises. Showed up on my radar screen months ago, posted by an individual who'd run on the Libertarian Party ticket. Pretty standard Libertarian fare, actually!
Well that's part of why I was pointing out both his weird pro and anti federalism guys as well as the racial underpinnings. People like McKinley and Ford are put on the right side of the portrait even though the caption he provides for them is one of positive emphasis. He puts under Andrew Jackson that Jackson was a great president because he stopped foreign banks from having a direct presence in the United States and then adds that it's unfortunate that Jackson's good name was tarnished by his anti-Native American policies. William Henry Harrison- who died in 30 days of office- is on the side of the "common man" which makes even less sense. The only thing I can think of is that the guys in the foreground are the main emphasis of this painting and the artist just randomly threw the remaining presidents in the background. If that's the case then the only people of importance in this painting are the men pointing at the common man and the men clapping for Obama. In which case I would presume those who are clapping destroyed America whereas those who are pointing are attempting to defend the US Constitution and the common man. The rest of the men are either pointless fillers for the background OR they're meant to fulfill the guy's statement that both Democrats and Republicans are guilty in the tarnishing of America.
Thanks for the link. I went there. Looked at all the offerings, watched the videos and read the text. Personally, I think Thomas Kinkade should sue this guy. He is equally bad, his prices for prints equally preposterous and that cannot be good for Tom's sales.
Now if he would paint a 2012 version of Nightowls featuring the Republican Candidates for President I might consider it. Of course I would consider it if anyone marginally capable did one. Only question is who would be behind the counter? ;-)
Obama, who is not constitutionally a ‘natural born citizen’,
occupies the office, and shreds on our constitution—no more rule of law, just
tyranny. What is so hard to figure here? Nothing racist of political party
other than a fraud foisted on the nation. Lincoln said “you can fool all of the
people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but not all of
the people all of the time.”
Yeah, and don't forget that that black president up there is half white.
Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.
Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791
The truth is out there yet some refuse to see Richard
It's NIGHTHAWKS you twit. If you're going to make a dumb comment to try to appear smart, get it right.
You know what they say...if you're not a Libertarian you're an idiot. I find it absolutely hilarious that you guys can—with a straight face mind you—label Libertarian beliefs as "bizarre."
Do you guys even know what Libertarians believe? We want as much individual freedom as possible and fiscal responsibility in an extremely limited government. Basically we want to be left alone, free from government scrutiny over what we do. If that's "bizarre" then you don't actually believe in what's written in the Constitution. And you'll never see it because you're too busy being smug and thinking that you're smarter than everyone else.
That's ok though, unlike liberals and conservatives, Libertarians value your freedom. We don't want to tell you what to do or how to do it. We don't want to baby you. We want to treat you like the adults that you are.
Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin on side is social, one side is religious and economic, but neither side is free, and certainly not free from the other.
Richard Skidmore, you're a birther, and clearly unable to think, let alone think for yourself.
President Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii, and has proved it, whether or not you care for the fact. His mother was white, and a United States citizen. She honored his father's country of origin in naming her baby. She was not "coding his country of origin", she was naming her baby.
The "shredders of our constitution" are the republicans in office who have perverted our system, pissed on citizen rights and stripped our nation of it's wealth through practices and behaviors that are traitorous upon examination.
If you're okay with that, and clearly you are, then you are one of Lincoln's "some of the people all of the time"! You've bought the Trumped up crap spewed by the right wingnuts who are scared to death of retribution by blacks for the history of poor treatment at the hands of such as you (old white far-- I mean folks).
That's all this is. You're terrified that once blacks get into power, they're going to decide that turn-about is fair play.
Oh my god! Someone miraculously healed FDR's legs! Praise Jeebus!
(Also: John Adams is not amused by your tomfoolery.)
I noticed that too, Emma. FDR hid his paralysis well during his politcal career, but could not stand on his own without something to hold on to.
Look at how tall and clean-shaven Richard Nixon is. That man was a train wreck back in the day.
FDR is being propped up by Bill Clintons ego, hidden from view.
Photoshopped version with Sad Keanu in three, two....
Your idea...

LOL!
"President Obama! You're standing on this poor white guy's map of Bass Pro Shops! And now he is SAD!!!"
This had me laughing out loud, Nelda. Thanks!
I thought it was the NASCAR standings and Jeff Gordon didn't make the list.
LMAO! Seriously, grim picture, I love honest, serious discussion with witty humor mixed in to lighten the mood! Awesome.
This particular thread, mocking the white man in the photo, is such a sad example of self-deprecating white people in America, it makes a rational person ill. You people are pathetic, and mindless racists. Seems most liberals follow your line of thought.
"We beg thee to bail out the bankruptser"
"Despite grand efforts from the windbags off-frame to the right, Obama manages to save the Constitution from blowing away completely."
William Simon's caption is officially fabulous
Obamacare is utilizing the commerce clause to coerce citizens to buy healthcare. If this passes muster in the Supreme Court it would mean any enterprise that involves a dollar, your happiness, and your freewill, would be subject to federal whims, the constitution would no longer limit (that was its purpose).
We will be chasing after nirvana in a fast fashion... With a unfettered government set lose to achieve it... Of course... boogity boogity boogity, if you’re a paranoid statist; its racism.
Anyway, it was a caption contest… heres mine…. “And he still has time to play golf!”
Explain William Simon. Saying it does not make it true. What part of the Constitution did he save? Remember the point of the framers was individual liberty and limited government. I have not heard even the most arrogant progressive nor Obama himself make such a claim. Obamacare?, Mexican gun running?, regulations, and etc… How does he defend my pursuit of happiness with the rollback of government? Your statement left undefended, leaves you as an ignorant fool.
Possible origin is from McNaughton "Fine" Art Instutute, The work is called "The Forgotten Man".
Caption from a childhood game "One of These Things (Is Not Like The Others". It's really hard to see unless you're a racist or a rep___.
One of those things is different... Lincoln is the only one with a full beard (unless I'm missing President Beardy McBeardigen hiding in the back).
There are at least three more presidents with full beards. You are missing them in the back.
I do not understand the juxtaposition of Obama with dollar bills. I was led to believe that he only deals in food stamps. Well, food stamps and singing.
The dollar bills was not about Obama....
If you look behind him, Bush is giggling and pointing saying "Hahaha....see....I managed to throw away the money and now he (Obama) and that poor guy on the bench are paying for it. And they said I was stupid. Who is stupid now?"
The winds that blow our billions away return burdened with themes of scorn and dispraise.
-Garet Garrett
For the historical innacuracy, I'll go with McNaughton putting Lincoln on the side of the people we know today as Republicans. Lincoln should be on the right, applauding Obama, along with FDR, Clinton and Teddy Roosevelt.
Caption? I got nutin'.
Very funny how he only hates progressives, except the one dude who freed the slaves. Cause...ya know, wouldn't want to seem racist w/ this backdrop, now would we?
We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men’s labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name—liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names—liberty and tyranny.
-Abraham Lincoln
Mouzer, how can you call Obama a progrssive. He and the Al Gore/Hollywood crowd (sum total IQ in that entire population would not equal a special ed classroom in Belgium), are blindly marching us back to a coal-fired transportation energy. This sounds more regressive than progressive.
"Is that my Wall Street Journal?! You rat bastard!"
"We'll trade you this peasant for that constitution. We'll even throw in the bench."
(and is this supposed to be split Reps on the left, Dems on the Right, b/c both Bush(es), Taft, Ford, Nixon and TR all seem to be one the Dem side for some reason?)
"Who's the black guy? Bet he catches hell around here."
This is a bench for righ men only!
John, this is not the time to discuss your hemorrhoids!
since you found it at a right-winger's place, I assume the piece of paper underneath President Obama's foot is The Constitution.
It's supposed to be, yes
Ready, set, HIKE!
Look at all this trash! Why is that slave not picking it up? He's just standing there!
Determined only to look forward, President Obama gets goosed by Bill Maher while a bunch of "fancy" white boys look on.
We wanted the WHITE guy as president!
Get over here Lincoln!, humans & future are more important than old white power!
good... now, cut to the crying indian.
It's ironic that the first use of the "stepping on the Constitution" meme was used against Andrew Jackson, but apparently now he's one of the "virtuous" ones in this depiction.
Whatever it's about, the Obama's should definitely use it for their next 'Holiday' greetings card!
And that would be April Fool's Day?
Very good President Obama you kept this man from Stealing the Constitution!
That version of the White House did not exist till 1817. Well after the passing of each of the 'Founding Fathers'.
well, except for Jefferson and Adams who both died on July 4th, 1826
Both Jefferson and Adams died on the same day? Was it merely a coincidence or were they at the same party? Too much alcohol to celebrate?
"Coincidence is where God remains anonymous. . ."
