Rick Santorum is against the government mandating that women get free amniocentesis. He's also against a lot more.
That oughta help Mitt Romney in Michigan. And this oughta help in Arizona.
I'll give you two guesses why: A North Carolina Catholic church fires a long-time employee for getting married.
The state of Voter ID laws in the nation (with a handy, interactive map!).
The attempt to recast fracking as a good thing.
Yemen is about to elect a new president.

Newt is right. If Mitt Romney cannot prevail in his home state of Michigan -- where the Romney camp assures all of us that he is so beloved and admired -- how can he beat Barack Obama in a November showdown? Mitt's problem with Tea Party voters has spread to the entire conservative wing of the Republican Party. As improbable as it may seem, Rick Santorum has managed to gather most of the right-wing electorate around his campaign as the last remaining anti-Romney challenger. This is becoming 2008 all over again for poor Mittens.. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
Rick Santorum is putting his foot in his mouth like that other Rick! Women need to shut him up before he does serious damage to the rights we have gained in the last 20 years!
No, let him speak. The more he says, the more odious and unelectable he becomes in a general election. The Republican base is apparently liking him more and more, but they are so out of step with the rest of the country that the better they like someone, the less everyone else will.
Of course, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents will not vote for Santorum under any circumstances, but as time passes I expect that "bipartisan-curious" (brazenly stolen from Jon Stewart) voters will become more and more turned off by Santorum the GOP as a whole.
So, let's allow Santorum to have his say. Then kill him electorally. It'll be more satisfying that way.
Wow, Republicans must really, really, REALLY, REALLY hate Mitt Romney to support someone like Rick Santorum instead.
Re: Rick Santorum. (1) Prenatal tests have multiple benefits that can allow surgeries prebirth and allow for a healthy child. (2) The tests are not forced on anyone. If a person doesn't want to take advantage of the tests, they don't need to take them. (3) The tests, while covered by insurance, are not 'free.' My health insurance costs a fair sum amount if money each month.
and I might add you work hard for that.
Santorum is one scary guy. He accuses Obama of forcing his beliefs on the American people , when that is ALL Santorum does. He doesn't talk about anything else but what the people should or shouldn't be able to do with their own bodies. Has he ever made a speech without a refernce to his interpretation of the Bible. He is better suited for the pulpit and not the oval office. His opinions on sex and procreating are irrational. Perhaps, he has some deep seeded distain for sex because as a child he was some priests favourite alter boy. The guy needs some kind of mental evaluation and therapy.
The world is watching and shaking their collective heads in disbelief of this fiasco the Republicans call their search for a leader of their party. Their attack and war on women's rights will never be viewed as acceptable by any group or country , other than the taliban. Extremists of any faith are dangerous, whether they come from outside the country or inside the country.
It is to laugh, isn't it? Santorum is SUCH an ass!
The Democrats' Prayer:
Dear Loving and Almighty God, let the Republicans nominate Rick Santorum and let President Obama sweep to a second term in an unprecedented landslide - bigger than Lyndon Johnson's in 1964. Let the House of Representatives purge itself of the Tea Party and the Senate regain its veto-proof majority of Democrats. Let every down ballot office go Democratic - down to dogcatcher - in every county of every state in the union. We ask these things in the name of truth, justice and the American Way. Amen.
Are we looking for someone to lead the country or the congregation?
Santorum frightens me too. I always wondered what it was like living in civilized Germany in the 20's. Now we watch polite, if disbelieving, television interviewers questioning Santorum, while his rabid, armed followers soak up his impassioned sincere rhetoric. He is ignorant, racist, and wants to blame a few identifiable groups — intellectuals and immigrants or other minorities — for all the hardships and problems of his disillusioned followers. Maybe "it can happen here."
I don't think we're Weimar Germany. Germany in the '20s was politically crippled by such a large number of small parties in the Reichstag that not only could any party achieve a ruling majority, no stable coalitions could be formed. That instability, which was partly also the result of Nazi agitation, is what eventually led to the Nazis eventually gaining power. They were the largest party, and the establishment was so desirous of political stability that any price seemed worth paying.
Our political system is very different. We have two and only two parties in Congress. There are clear majorities in each house. And although the GOP is doing everything it can to sabotage the workings of Congress, we do have political stability. The only risk right now is that the GOP wins both houses of Congress and the White House this November, but that seems increasingly unlikely. Even if the GOP manages to win the Presidency (a bit unlikely if the choices are Romney or Santorum), a throw-the-bums-out attitude toward Congressional races will probably mean that the Senate flips but so too the House, and will still have a divided government no matter which party wins the White House.
In Germany, in 1933, only one person, President von Hindenberg, had the choice of who was to be Reich Chancellor, and all his possible choices were bad ones. We're not quite in the same place. We're in a tough spot, but it's not that bad yet.
It isnt only Birth Control that this person is against, he is against abortion even in the cases of rape saying "Take care of what God has given you. I dunno bout you but MY God does NOT give me a child thru rape, in fact in the old testament, men are supposed to be killed if they rape someone. He says that Protestants are tools of Satan. women are a distraction in war, ask our military if they feel like that.. education should be left up to local communities and parents. With the number of dropouts, who is going to home school? We have many parents that cant even read nm teach their children but I guess according to this person, it isnt anyones business outside of parents and local community. Get rid of the EPA and to hell with our childrens health and future. This man says that we are putting the earth before man, that the natural resources are here for us to use so we shouldnt worry about running out and we certainly shouldnt worry about the damage we do to the earth cause we cant spoil it. Gee didnt God say go forth and multiply and tame the earth... I dont see anywhere that He says to use it all up and to heck with the fallout. And women vote for this monster?? I do not understand...
If you live in Virginia, this is a list of the 20 representatives who sponsored the ultrasound bill. Are these people representing your views? If the answer is no, vote them out.

Reading a rant about how veniswayla (sic) has $.89 gasoline while our gasoline under our president is > $3.00. Sounds like we want our next government to be a combination of Hugo Chavez, Ahmadinejad, and Torquemada. Beg pardon, but I would disagree.
Ask a conservative what's going right in this nation today and watch their head explode. They can't admit to anything going good, not under Obama. Pretty sad way to keep a score card.
They decry the Taliban, but they want to invoke similar regulation in the US.
Prenatal testing, public school, what next? He needs to be in a sanitarium.
How about a sanatorium?
Any woman who stands on the stage with Rick Santorum or stands in the audience and listens to him then clap for him and his ridiculous theories and beliefs, then shake his hand should be ashamed of themselves. Don't they realize that he wants to sign away all their rights as women with that same hand that they are shaking? Wake up!
Wouldn't it be easier if Santorum simply told us what he was FOR, rather than what he's against, or would that be too short a stump speech.
Clever how you wove the words "short" and "stump" into a comment about the guy who's against sex...nice job.
question: when john f kennedy was running, the repubs were soooooooooooo upset that if he became president he would FORCE us all to be catholics. so now we have a true nut job running for president, a catholic, who publicly announced that he will force his catholic beliefs upon us all, and the repubs wrap their arms around this clown...................why? what is the difference?
They hate the Mormon candidate more than the Catholic?
I guess Republicans would rather have multiple mistresses more than multiple wives.
So .. the Catholic church will fire someone for marrying the same sex because it goes against their beliefs. That is their right, I suppose. But did they fire any priests who raped little children? Oh ... that's right ... they just "pay a tribute" instead.
And get promoted, shift funds to other churches to protect the money from lawsuits, and then move to another church across the country to continue avoiding the law.
as fascinating (and I think it is) as this republican campaign is, there are so many deeply concerning things, issues, dangerous plays being made.. the state by state war on women, budgets, wages, healthcare, the environment, (selling public lands.. fracking as good...) the war on truth continues unabated with the phoney climate war trying to get into text books, the insideous and I would use the word treasonous war on voters and elections..and I didn't even really speak of the large national issues like the economy, jobs, foreign concerns... it's overwhelming and so listening to a twit like Santorum.. well, he's an easy target. And my secret fear which fights with my American hope is that there just might be enough people to actually make one of these crazies President.
Well the repulicans don't have to say no anymore, because of that asprin between their knees.
I am a 48 year old woman from the Cleveland, OH area and the mother of three wonderful children. But many years ago I had to make the difficult decision to have an amniocentesis after some very bad prenatal testing results. I chose to have the amniocentesis, which our insurance did pay for, and I had to wait the two weeks for the test results. During those two weeks my husband and I had to weigh all the realities and options that could possibly be facing us. The results of that test or the choice that we made prior to those results, is inconsequential, but the opportunity to have that choice was a blessing.
To think that Mr. Santorum or anyone believes as he does, that women should not be afforded the opportunity to have prenatal testing, is not only narrow-minded and self-righteous, but unbelievably naive about the realities of life in our world. It takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to raise a healthy child and millions to raise a child with disabilities. This is a reality and not a bias against the disabled. Access to healthcare coverage and the daily, constant care that a disabled child requires is yet another reality. Given that Mr. Santorum doesn’t believe in mandatory healthcare that would give parents peace of mind, is really forcing women into a very scary corner. Mr. Santorum said amniocentesis is primarily used to determine genetic defects that result in doctors recommending abortion and that 90% of Down Syndrome children are aborted. Does Mr. Santorum condemn women and families who make that most difficult decision? And if so, why does he think they do it? Does he not realize that most families have to consider all the realities of their life and the lives of their family while making such a difficult decision? If he believes that he should eliminate such testing and as a result, force all women to carry a pregnancy to term regardless of the realities, then is he committing himself and society to support all those women and children. Most women having pre-natal testing and amniocentesis are doing so within the constraints of their own religious, spiritual, moral and ethical beliefs and they do recognize the realities they are facing. I have been in those shoes and I know the pain and anguish that is facing the woman, but it is also a blessing, because knowledge is strength. Mr. Santorum and his wife made a choice and I admire and respect their choice but that is the point, we were all able to make choices. He was blessed with the resources to care for his daughter and all his other children. Not everyone has that same bank of resources and Mr. Santorum’s policies will take even more of the available resources away from most people. In third world countries, babies with birth defects are left to die after birth, and not that long ago, we did that here even in the confines of our most advanced hospitals and with the consent of doctors, nurses, clergy and parents. If you take away the coverage for prenatal testing, you take away guaranteed healthcare, you limit resources for education and social security for the elderly what kind of country are you trying to create? Certainly
Blast from the past! Remember a decade ago, when Assad's Syria did its violating of human rights at the request of the USA?

"I'm shocked....shocked there's gambling here at Ricks!" :-)
Here is one of the big things that should scare you all about Rick Santorum. When Michigan voters were asked why they were going to vote for him many said that while they had no idea what he stood for, what his policies are or his beliefs, they said they'd vote for him because they "like" him, that he seems down to earth, just like them. That should scare everyone.
Sunday marked the 70th anniversary of Roosevelt giving the Japanese Internment Camp Executive Order in 1942. I think it's a very important - and sad - part of American history and should be discussed in the news.
What do we become when we deny the humanity of others?
The massive GOP effort towards Voter ID legislation suggests that Republicans want us to believe that they are protecting us against those who would use the current weak system to steal an election.
There are very few incentives for fraudulent voting and the penalties for getting caught are rather severe, which makes the idea that voter fraud is even an issue rather ridiculous.
Some questions come to mind:
It seems obvious that there are much less expensive and much more effective means to influence elections, especially with laws governing PAC funding.
My rep. in SC sent an email reply to the thousands of people petitioning against its voter ID bill (H.4549) in part by saying: "May I have your Social Security Number, date of birth and the key that unlocks your right to vote on election day?" The state wants to collect $50 per form that third party people turn in late (teachers and other organizations). The bill has been described as "accountability on steroids."
Update: Yesterday, the SC legislature took "no action" on H.4549! It looks like the petitions and exposure are working to change some republican minds- at least for now.
You know that Gas Price riff that the GOP is trying to sing? The one that starts with gas being $1.80 when Obama became president?
The problem is, that just 3 months prior it was at $4 per gallon. Time for a chart: (like this one)
Funny what global economic meltdowns do to oil prices.
So what is the Right proposing that a GOP President would do to bring gas prices down despite exponential growth in demand from enormous markets in China and India?
Create another Global Meltdown? If so, they would be playing to one of their core competencies.
I always thought - based on comments by many people before 2008 - that Bush and Cheyney controlled the price of oil.
Seriously though, if gas prices do climb higher than they are now the knee-jerk reaction of a lot of the general public is to blame the current person in office.
The dynamics are that Chinese demand is going through the roof, and this will only accelerate as India and the rest of the world goes online with heavy transportation demand for oil. If the world had 10 times the reserves it had all fully developed with wells dug it would not be enough.
What was that conspiracy theory about microchipping the population? What, is religious spiritual abuse, soul-hacking & mind-numbing programming wearing off, or something? Out come the microchips, bolstered by Santorum & Romney religious whoremongering?
