Am I crazy or are Republican women not aware they are staying in an abusive relationship!? NOBODY even pretends republican men would tolerate this treatment of them. I think mrz190 is right - Sharia law by any other name....
That's my Mom, my sister, my daughter, & my wife they are treating like CATTLE.
Get off the darn social issues.
We have 16 million in debt, gas going to 5 bucks a gallon, Iran arming themselves with nuclear weapons, 50% of the population not paying any federal income tax, unemployment staying over 8% and very high black unemployment. Let's stick with the important issues, can we?
Shame the repugs have no answers to any problems. But then they are gods chosen clowns.
Good thing you're complaining to the news agencies and not the candidates who drive the cycle *sigh*
Contessa61- There are many people in this economy that don't earn enough to pay the Federal Income Tax. Many of them also qualtify for food stamps. The recession that started in December of 2007 has hit many people very hard. There are many people who fill out a great numer of job applications without any luck.
I think the Virginia bill is a very bad bill. Republicans are supposed to be for smaller government.
Virginia is not just the laughingstock of the nation but also of the world. In
Ireland, the following question has been put out there. Is this what the U.S.
Republicans mean by small government--the government of your bedroom
Contessa is just mad because this right wing campaign has gotten the attention it deserves. After all the last thing we want is for our government to become a theocracy while we are attending to other problems
Maybe women should all read "The Handmaid's Tale", by Margaret Atwood. It makes for really sobering reading about what could happened to them in a society dominated by racist chauvinistic males.
Quoted from wikipedia: "The Handmaid's Tale is set in the near future in the Republic of Gilead, a country formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America. It was founded by a racist, male chauvinist, nativist, theocratic-organized military coup as an ideologically driven response to the pervasive ecological, physical and social degradation of the country.
Beginning with a staged terrorist attack (blamed on Islamic extremist terrorists) that kills the President and most of Congress, a movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launched a revolution and suspended the United States Constitution under the pretext of restoring order. Taking advantage of electronic banking, they were quickly able to freeze the assets of all women and other "undesirables" in the country, stripping them of their rights. The new theocratic military dictatorship, styled "The Republic of Gilead", moved quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious orthodoxy among its newly created social classes.
In the recent republican trends, I find a lot that reminisces of this book.
Must read from Brent Hartinger at AlterNet:
Why Patriarchal Men Are Utterly Petrified of Birth Control

These Republicans keep trying to confuse what religious freedom is. Where it is really the people who choose what religious faith they want to follow a long with maintaining all peoples rights. And it is not where some church or extreme religious person can shove down the throats of all people an extreme agenda and start dictating what people should do which imposes on all peoples rights and privacy. And now we do have these Republican religious extremists and certain religious church groups who are trying to do that very thing on how all people should live their lives. I say get out of my personal life, religious faith, my rights, my own personal choices, my privacy, and my very freedom. Our very forefathers and foremothers made it this way, because of corrupt, greedy, power craving, deceiving, arrogant, and hypocritical dictators and church hierarchy put people in despair.
Poor Virgina politicians. All they want to do is impose their religious belief on the rest of Virgina. They are on a mission from god to save those heathens! Why all this fuss over your elected officials playing god? It's not like they decieved you to get elected by not talking about their intention to pass religious mandates. I mean you complain now but you will re-elect them when the time comes thus proving you like being told how to live your life.
Of course the federal election won't produce any new reps either.
Am I just too cynical? In an effort to appear Vice Presidential, the Virginia governor waters down the bill but now the state Senate pushes back and says all or nothing.
To me, this is great strategy! My take is this: The bill is blowing up in everybody's faces. So knowing that the bill will ultimately die, the governor can't continue to support the original bill, but he can't come out against the entire thing either. So he amends the fringes of the bill, keeping its core. Then he gets the Senate to say the amended bill is unacceptable. Thus, original bill is killed, amended bill was dead on arrival, and we all reset back to square 1.
The Senate takes a minor hit for even ever having supported such a bill but gets a pat on the back for finally doing the right thing. The Republican Vice Presidential hopeful shores up his conservative pedigree because he can say that he was still in support of the bill and it was in fact the Senate that axed it and the Republican base applauds him for sticking to his guns.
Now that gamesmanship is what I call being Vice Presidential.
Rachael, you might want to take another look at that Virginia amendment. My understanding is that while it is true they are removing a direct requirement that a transvaginal probe be used, they still require an ultrasound photo capable of specific details which can only be gotten through the use of a transvaginal probe. Instead of making it mandatory and unconsented, they make the photo mandatory and "how you choose to go about getting it is up to you" but really there is only one way to get it, you just have to consent to the probe.
Republican voters and politicians treat politics exactly like diehard sports fanatics. It's "our team no matter what", right? An "Us against Them", "Win at All Costs" mentality. But it's not sports - it has very real impact on our daily lives. Stop thinking of it like the Super Bowl until the 2 parties realize they are the offence and defense of the same damned team. That is the real problem in a nutshell. Republicans don't compromise with "The Enemy" unless they have to. GIGO.
No contraceptives (may include condoms?)..... Fetus = person..... Courts have ruled that deadbeat dads still have Parental Rights (including rapists)...... So, can I claim parental rights and SUE to prevent abortion 48 hours after sex? It's my baby too now, even if I skip out later before it's born. I would'a said that's crazy talk just 6 months ago, but now?
