The folks at the Steinbeck Center honored Rachel with a Steinbeck Award this past weekend and were not only nice enough to provide us with a live stream that night, but they've also provided a recording of the event. The whole thing is more than an hour long so I've broken it up a little. The basic format is a lengthy interview of Rachel by KGO Radio host Pat Thurston, followed by some audience questions, and then the bestowing of the award at the end. Enjoy.
The next four parts after the jump...

Thank you! I will finish watching later or tomorrow.
Thanks, Will! It was wonderful watching this live on Ustream the other night. You could feel the love in the room...
Thanks so much!! I also enjoyed seeing it on livestream this past weekend too but did miss some parts due to PC issues so I am happy to see them linked here. ^^
I was late in coming to the computer and so i missed the first part of the interview - am looking forward to catching up with that. The presentation was moving and Rachel's acceptance said so much both in words and presence. Thank you for putting this on the blog and thanks to the Steinbeck Center for providing this for the blog...
Best Evening Ever!
It was awesome! Nice conversation in a similar format to the Shultz Museum for Title IX anniversary with Billie Jean King.
I loved hearing from Tom, it was as if I'd heard his father speak.
Congratulations Rachel.
Thanks again, couldn't spot my friend in the audience, though.
Wow, such a thought-provoking and inspirational talk. Really beautiful.
Congrats!
that night was so much fun.
Thanks for sharing this, the Prize was well deserved.
Here's a link to the cited HS commencement address. ("Diploma holders.")

Thanks Karen for posting that! Intelligence mixed with change activism and individuality in High School.
Thanks so much for posting this. An hour well spent.
Thank you, Will-at-Work!
Interesting to be sure, but the sound quality made it difficult to hear often during the whole show. Your part was often a bit muddy but the host's questions were often very hard to make out. No one else seemed bothered from the posts above, so maybe it's just me getting old...
You're the best Rachel, keep doing what you do because you're very good for this country.
It took me three days to find the time to listen to it all, but it was well worth the time spent. Congrats to you Rachel and her fine team at TRMS who help her do it every day.
Have you considered that conservatism is like petit Alzheimers?
thanks for posting this! I love John Steinbeck's books and Rachel Maddow's insights, humor and sheer brain power.
I saw her talk with Letterman at Ball State and still can't believe I was in the presence of such greatness. It was and still is, surreal. She is my biggest role model.
