A Cameron's Kick is a classic cocktail that appears in the legendary Savoy cocktail book from the 1930s. It's one of the only good, classic scotch cocktails. As wonderful as scotch is, it doesn't always mix well. But in this, it mixes great.
INGREDIENTS:
1 oz. Scotch Whisky
1 oz. Irish Whiskey
1/2 oz. orgeat syrup
1/2 oz. lemon juice
PREPARATION:
Shake over ice.
Strain into cocktail glass.
Garnish with an orange twist.

It is EXTREMELY IRRESPONSIBLE for Rachael Maddow to do a "Cocktail Moment" segment on her show. Alcohol use is on the rise, with CDC numbers showing more than 40 percent of high school students using alcohol, and more than 80 percent of college students, with the majority in the form of binge drinking. Alcohol use is strongly associated with cancer (esophogeal, etc) and has lead to horrible innocent deaths from drunk driving, and shattered lives from date rape, broken marriages, and abused children. We have over focused on tobacco, and failed to take a real look at the increasing harms of alcohol, which have been completely ignored. I am a die-hard liberal, who is seriously questioning my Democratic Party and progressive views, since my party has become so closely associated with alcohol and wine interests. Rachael has only confirmed this view, and I will be holding my nose and voting Republican this year. I am sad to say I will also no longer be supporting Rachael, or watching her show, until this kind of overt alcohol abuse encouragement comes to an end. Portland, Oregon
If you think that the recipe was an old one, and interesting to know,I think. There is no wrong doing in giving a recipe, the wrong doing is in how much people might drink. And that is not her fault, the fault is in the immoderate.
Oh, Please, @PortlandOreg. Do not drink if you do not want to, but let others do as they choose.
Oh, I know, Any Fun Stuff is Bad.
It starts with a P! That rhymes with T! That's what you got. Right here in River City … etc.
RIP -- Robert Preston
PS---Still annoys me Rachel thinks she is "Old" at 38. Sweet Jeebus. Could I be that "Old" once more...
I thought Carrie Nation was dead.
For crying out loud. You do realize that if not for alcohol we might still be in the dark ages. Well then again you seem to prefer the dark ages.
I find it disturbing that we still have people in this world who oppose any source of pleasure or form of release that they somehow want to see as evil. Alcohol like cigarettes, gambling, drugs and such are not evil -people are evil. Those who try to impose their will on others are always the most evil. They are like crusaders or dictators. They lie, skew the fact and miss the boat.
The worst addiction I have noticed is the addiction of religion when screwed up addicts swap their crutch out for the bible. They become brainless drones in denial. They avoid the cold hard reality that they have an addictive personality that might be genetic.
Freedom and liberty are the mainstays of America-live with it!
Chill out, get a life, there are responsible adults in the room.
Spare us the self-righteousness, @PortlandOreg. The republicans cannot wait to tell you when you can hold your nose, or how, or with whom. And g_d help you if you're female, republicans cannot wait to get their self-righteous probes into you.
Are you SURE you are a liberal??? Seems to me one of the main tenets of being "liberal" is that you don't believe in forcing your social beliefs on others.
So you are going to vote Republican because alcohol is more important than everything else the Republican Party stands for? And BTW, exactly what IS the Republican Party's stance on alcohol? And how does it differ from the Democratic Party's stance?.
So you'll vote Republican because you have a bug up your butt about Rachel Maddow mixing a cocktail? That's the most idiotic thing I've read in a while, seriously. What about your personal values and views on things like women's rights, the economy, environment, etc.? You're willing to sacrifice those because you're pissed about cocktails??
In what way does Rachel mixing a cocktail now and then promote alcoholism? Is she telling people to get schnockered? No. If you don't want to drink, fine, but don't get all high and mighty against those of us who do enjoy an adult beverage from time to time.
Seems to me you'd fit in better with One Million Moms than us on the Maddowblog.
Damn, with all this anti-alcohol ranting, I'm beginning to think there's a lot of closet-republicans around here. I don't have a problem with the cocktail moment on it's own. My only question would be about Lewis Blacks past. If he is a suffering or recovering alcoholic, then it was a mistake to have him on.
I'm very tempted to intentionally misspell "whine" on this occasion, but I will refrain. This "cocktail moment" to me is a bit of history and no worse (potentially better) than anything you'd see on a cookery show. What would you have preferred PortlandOreg? Rachel (note the spelling! Her name is only all over this very website and in the video clip! Tsk tsk tsk!) saying "Oh and by the way, please drink responsibly" because I would have...and then chucked the drink down my throat, gave the the thumbs up and wink just for the hilarity that would ensue!
Mmmmmmmmmm
Yummy cocktails
@PortlandOreg,
Lighten up, Francis.

Shelter yourself from reality then.
Double post somewhere else.
I guess, since I, too, am posting again to a duplicate we just cannot get enough of @PortlandOreg's opinion. Oh, boy. Steady me fellas. I've had two Portlands now. Feel a bit light-headed ;-)
PortlandOreg,
Young people are drinking more because old people
fuscrewed up the world. Badly. Not to be rude or anything, but have you considered blogging on one of these sites?
These appear to have located "ground zero" for the problem you are describing.
I kinda dig her cocktail moments personally.
Me too, and I'm not even a drinker.
Well, not much of a drinker, anyway.
I can't drink any more because of health issues.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Or so the doctor says.
Looking for alternatives ...
Hemp?
SALUD! ;)
Lewis Black was either extremely nervous to be on your show, or he had a serious case of DTs. If the latter is the case, you can lose the coctail moment. His left hand was shaking so much, he could not even lift the coctail glass. Seriously sad.
Honestly I think it was because he couldn't use the F word constantly, so he was nervous and on his guard.
This is really hilarious if you have seen his act.
Lewis Black always has that affect, at least on the tee-vee.
Where in the heck is she getting orgeat syrup? The last time I planned to offer my guests pitchers of mai tais, I searched a three-state area for it and had to give up.
from me, apparently! see the store finder at bgreynolds.com
I could have sworn Rachel said the orgeat was homemade. I'd love a good recipe for it.
Imbibe magazine had a recipe for Orgeat, but I haven't tried it. I made the Cameron's Kick with some Fee Brother's Orgeat that I found in a local liquor store, and it was quite good.
http://www.imbibemagazine.com/Homemade-Orgeat-Recipe
I'm French and orgeat syrup is very easy to find here, every supermarket will carry some. I just wanted to try to describe the pronunciation of the word orgeat: it's simply 'orja' with 'ja' close to the beginning of the word 'jar' in English (without the 'd' sound in the 'j'). And definitely no 't' sound at the end of the word.
It's mostly used in the south of France to make a cocktail called a "mauresque" (i.e., 'Moorish'), mixing Pastis, a dash of orgeat syrup and water. It's very popular there.
Incidentally, use grenadine syrup instead of orgeat syrup and you get a "tomate" (i.e., tomato). If you use mint syrup in your pastis instead of orgeat or grenadine syrup then it's called a "perroquet" (i.e., a parrot).
I can't say I'm a big fan of Pastis, with or without syrup in it, but I love those cocktail names!
i too was going to comment a correction of the pronunciation of Orgeat. . . (Or-Jah) it's a hard one, i know.
as a barman in Geneva , CH , a fan of this show , and someone with access to Orgeat syrup , i have actually tried this cocktail and am a fan! it's quite yummy! but i think it ought to come with the disclaimer of being quite strong , with so much whiskey in it , and very sweet so one doesn't notice its strength right away. . .
although what's-his-face at the top of this comment list did have a fair point about the dangers of alcohol abuse , it was lost in the rant about voting conservative. . . republicans are a dying breed. as a barman i can say that it is difficult to see so many people who are dependent on this drug. . . but i don't think that Maddow has done anything but demonstrate how to drink responsibly and in moderation , and how to have a little fun with new cocktails. . . it's called teaching by example , and i'm just happy that there are still people out there to do it!
ps. . .
Orgeat is often just consumed in water as a syrup - also sometimes mixed with Grenadine , good combo. . . but the most interesting to me is when people drink it in a glass of milk. . . i've also tried that , and it's not too bad. . .
Rachel described it as Almond(y) and it is. . . but. . . it should not be confused with Almond syrup , as it's not so simple. . . as i understand it there are other spices and whatnot that give a particular flavor.
but Elanor is right in saying that it is most commonly mixed with Pastis , and that it called a Mauresque. . . but i wouldn't go so far as to say that it is only popular in the south of France , as i've been having it here in GVA , and have not had any difficulty to find it as far north as Paris. . .
personally , my favorite Pastis melange (mix) is with both Orgeat and Grenadine. . . (but it doesn't have a cool name) don't forget the ice cubes! it's great in spring and summer - for a little pre-dinner aperitif!
Hi there, I'm the maker of that Orgeat. If anyone from the Maddow show wants to contact me, I'd love to send some samples over! Contact info and more at BGReynolds.com
Its always funny to read the comments on Maddowblog- Seems like 9 times out of 10 at least one of the first 3 comments comes from a bona-fide resident of Hater-Ville. If you're going to vote republican because of the (every?) Friday cocktail segment on a pundit show, you were never going to support a broader liberal agenda anyway.
They were having a cocktail on a Friday night?!?! That's it! Trans-Vaganal Ultrasounds for everyone!
I was currious- does anyone know why every Friday Rachel talks about going to "Prison!" ??
@Round, the usual follow-up to Maddow'sFrioday show is one of MSNBC's fine prison documentary shows, some variant of Lock-Up.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36735502/ns/msnbc_tv-documentaries/
For some strange reason prison is popular with liberals.
This might be because republicans do things like this to fill prisons.
I don't mind the "Cocktail Moment", but do you realize that your guest, Lewis Black, attempted to make approximately 1000 complete sentences and completed, perhaps 6 during the entire interview? There may be a chance that your guest didn't need a "Cocktail Moment" after all. I suspect he's been in a "Cocktail Moment" for many years and hasn't been funny in years.
Your show has been great for awhile, but you do nothing to enhance your reputation by bringing on guests such as Lewis Black to your show. Would love to drink with him though..............thanks for the laughs tonight. P.S. (the rest of the show was spot on).....
Some Dude, Somewhere Overseas.......SDSO
Louis Black was oxygen deprived after sprinting over to Rachel's studio from Olberman's.
After reading this blog I need a cocktail!
need?
or
want?
There's a better drink than the Cameron's Kick which my sister and I tried today. Try a Whoa Nellie
Ingredients:
1 1/4 ounces Sazerac rye or other rye3/4 ounce dark rum, such as Myers's3/4 ounce Cointreau4 dashes Angostura bitters1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice1/2 ounce grapefruit juice1/2 ounce Simple Syrup
Preparation: Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a Martini glass and serve immediately.
Do not skimp on the bitters - it makes the drink.
@mightbe: THANK YOU! makes a lot of sense- since I have been living overseas for years now, I download the show through iTunes; there is no next show for me. Very greatful to MSNBC for next day viewing (via podcast) wherever I might be.
I was thinking there was some inside joke I was not getting: we spend the weekend in prison? Why?? Why is that funny??? Help I don't get it!
Only discovered TRMS only about 2 months ago.
Rachel and producers: Very smart, animated, and lacking all the whining bleeding heart agenda element that I found too commonly radical in Northern California for my Midwestern upbringing.
Thank you RM for keeping me interested in the politics of the country I love & exposing the new radicals
- RTWR
Rather than repeating the regular program night line-up Friday nights on MSNBC, the producers show a series called "Lock UP", about conditions in U.S. prisons. This is to what Rachel is referring.
And, yes, she is giving her audience a complex sending them to prison every Friday night. Bad Rachel.
Oh and BTW @Portland Ore: Nobody thinks you were ever a "die-hard liberal"- Yes alcohol abuse is a serious problem in modern society, but equating a single cocktaial on a Friday night to substance abuse reeks of modern extremism.
Minimise big tobacco (Republican Agenda)
Demonise alcohol (Right Wing Republican Agenda)
Utilize fear (Republican fear agenda tool for everything)
Hate Rachel Maddow (Fox News (uber-republican) Agenda)
Rovke "die-hard liberal" status (Choose your battles stupidly and hope we"re even more stuipd)
Best of luck in 2012 xoxo
I always enjoy the Cocktail Moment, and I don't immediately think of the horrors and tragedies of alcohol abuse. Just like I enjoy looking at new cars and don't immediately think about the horrors and tragedies of vehicular abuse. Actually, I enjoy lots of things and don't immediately think about the horrors and tragedies of any sort of excessive abuse.
But, heck, since the Republicans are so determined to turning back the clock on everything else, maybe we should start preparing for the new Prohibition agenda. (And I'm not entirely kidding.)
As long as it's not the "Kirk" Cameron.
Although, it might be fun drink one when he does something exceptionally stupid on national TV...
I sympathize, Rachel. I haven't been able to drink on a school night since I was 27...
