Even Newt's billionaire says Newt is done.
The White House has no plan B (and says they don't need one) if health reform dies at SCOTUS.
An Oklahoma judge rules the state's mandatory ultrasound law is unconstitutional.
The campaign to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act gets personal.
RIP, Adrienne Rich. And Earl Scruggs.
What's Jeff Bezos doing with all that money?

Why are we not hearing more about every Republican member of the House voting Against making it Illegal for an employer to demand your facebook password as a condition for employment ? I think EVERYONE needs to know that!
Yes, I agree. Please go to the ACLU website and read about the various forms of violations to our personnel freedom and our rights.I dont want to go all out conspiratal on you ,but it just seems like when Zuckerberg sold some of these shares of facebook the violations of facebook and twitter came on immediately. Was there cohersion in who he sold his shares to or did Zuckerberg no about gov intrusion before the deal?
1) Does anyone know of anyone who has been required to give out their facebook password? Is this UL?
2) Presuming that it's for real, just so people understand: for folks who are serious about computer security, giving out your ID and password to a computer system (for any reason) is grounds for immediate termination. No other reason needed, no exit interview given, there's the door thankyouverymuch. I would not work for someone who required this, nor would I hire anyone who did this. Yeah, it's a big deal.
It's true. Heard a story on NPR about this happening to someone. He did get hired but quit some time after.
Yes, it really does happen. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/job-seekers-getting-asked-facebook-080920368.html
The conservatives on the Court and the Republican opponents of health care do not know what they will unleash should their dreams come true and the increasingly illegitimate ad partisan court strike down this law. The reaction of the American people when they learn a handful of white male conservative justices have reached down and literally ripped their health insurance and their only ability to pay for their medical costs out of their hands will be thunderous. "Obamacare" may poll poorly, but the various individual provisions that have expanded coverage and helped lower costs for millions of people are very popular when polled separately. This could be setting up a major backlash for the Court and the GOP. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
I tend to agree. Of course the news isn't in yet but, the intent seems pretty
realistic. The "wrong" wing has wealthy interests only and no consideration for Americans as a country of mostly Middle Class and Poor. You can't run a country without us and they show no signs of that realization. I know the "supremes" know constitutionality (per se) however, more than a mandate hangs in the balance here, constitutional or not. This is a powder keg for polar overload and I daresay it may be about time.
Yet, how many of their questions or comments related to questions of Constitutionality? As the E.J. Dionne article in the Post says, most seemed as if they were focused on the individual parts of the ACA and how to make them function better or go away. Do they deliberate together before they vote or do they not discuss at all once they go to their chambers after hearing arguments? How did they address the issue of Constitutionality of the individual responsibility mandate, if at all? On what grounds did they say it would violate precedent if they struck it down? Some things we citizens need to know.
Rachel. It’s time to do an exposé on Koch/ALEC and the connection between them and the “Stand your ground” laws, Voter Suppression. Mandatory ultrasounds, privatized prisons, private school vouchers, influence in state corporate tax cuts, influence in state budget cuts, and sale of state assets, and many many others. The people need to know the Koch Brothers and ALEC are a savage assault on our democracy!
In SC we woke to news this morning ,South Carolina is going to give people who send kids to private schools will be getting a $4000 tax break ,when the state is already broke Im guessing they will take the money to pay for this from the public school budgets, well another strike against the middle class for the rich .
YES! No one seems to know anything about ALEC. Rachel would be the perfect to blow the lid off their wrongdoings! Great comment.
Adrienne Rich is Dead?? No! That was one of my favorite poets in high school! :(
Hehe, you know you're screwed when the guy who's given you 15 million dollars says you're screwed too.
I am struggling to understand the following:
Why George Zimmerman has not been arrested? Is Zimmerman still in possession of the gun? If not, where is it and has it been tested?
Why does the Supreme Court continue their path to destroy middle and low income Americans with rulings like Citizens United and what we can only assume will be the destruction of our health care? As a survivor meaning a person with a pre-existing condition, how can this be a good outcome for me or others?
Unfortunately, I think Zimmerman still has the gun. As far as I know nothing has been done against him whatsoever, thus far anyway.
this morning the news agencies are showing a video of Zimmerman after he was brought to the police station for questions and theres no sign of a struggle ,his nose looks good to have been broken, and he said his head was being beaten into the sidewalk no blood or even a scratch on his head, sounds like it was an after thought to make him look like he was defending him self!
I have a problem with all this examination of Zimmerman in the news. While I agree that the reporters need to prove that this was a miscarriage of justice, I worry that the man will be unable to get a fair trial. Folks, this is America and we need to do this legally not in the media. The spotlight has been fixed, a special prosecutor has been assigned, if this guy did murder a child, he needs to be tried fairly in a court.
Useful perspective on the Catholic Church and, among other things, contraception. I'd forgotten about the 1966 Papal Commission that recommended easing the ban.

There is a light in OK shining from the state supreme court. How long before they are voted out?
Re Bezos, and before him, James Cameron: These rich guys plumbing the ocean depths sound like a setup for a Charles Stross "Laundry" story.
Good morning; Luv your show! hey, above i noticed some people asking you to orginize some facts for us..you do it so well... I too believe there is a connection to all these attacks on avrage Americans of all ages, sexes, and social position. My personal pet peave is gun proliferation. See, I dont believe having more guns in our socity makes ME safer. And the promotion of hate by the republican party makes guns in our socity even more dangerous.. republicans seem to like to scare people...just a thought ..thanks for being u.
The conservatives do realize that if the Supreme Court rules against the individual mandate they are basically ruling against Paul Ryan's Medicare vouchers. If mandated individual purchasing of medical plans is out of bounds for the US government then there is no way giving vouchers and mandating you go purchase insurance under Ryan's plan would be constitutional.
Hey Rachel,
Just got my copy of "Drift", it was waiting for me on the door step when I got off work this morning. I look forward to reading it but am saddened that I can't meet you at your book signing as the event is completely sold out and there are lots of people still looking for tickets to come see you. But maybe in the future.
I just want to say that I think your are head and shoulders above your cloeset competition. No other anchor, in my view, comes close to your great interviews or the fact that you take pride in reporting news and correcting yourself when proved wrong. Please keep up the brillant work!
I suspect the ACA is going down. Should we be surprised that the Tea Party(or,
the Republican Party) challenged the law because it was President Obama's
signature piece of legislation and their main goal is to prevent a second Obama
term. They knew it would work its way to the SCOTUSs who are Tea Party
affiliated on the conservative side (activist judges) who knew how they would
vote before arguments even began. Just another way to cut Obama off at the
knees. This has nothing to do with "constitutionality" and everything to do with
partisan politics. Too bad that, as usual, regular Americans will suffer as a result.

How about bringing Eduardo Porter on. He just wrote this excellent article for the NYTimes:

On of my favorite parts is his discussion of the Laffer curve:
And then there's this delight:
Some advances in energy development are just ... disgusting.

Here is some food for thought to all the supreme court justices? They, nor the government can force me to buy or eat broccoli, but they sure as hell forced me to eat and buy a whole lotta frijoles when they unjustly ruled for Bush instead of Gore in the 2000 presidential election.
