We talked earlier about Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Budget Committee, who insisted yesterday that he, not America's military leadership, should be trusted when it comes to Pentagon spending levels. Ryan went on to say that he believes Pentagon leaders may be deliberately misleading Congress about spending cuts that they've requested, but which Ryan does not want to make.
Today, the highest ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces responded to the congressman's unfounded accusations.

Gen. Dempsey doesn't seem impressed with Paul Ryan.
[Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff] took sharp exception to the chairman's comments.
"There's a difference between having someone say they don't believe what you said versus ... calling us, collectively, liars," Gen. Dempsey told reporters aboard a U.S. military aircraft after a four day visit to Latin America. "My response is: I stand by my testimony. This was very much a strategy-driven process to which we mapped the budget."
Gen. Dempsey said the budget "was a collaborative effort" among the top officers of the military branches as well as combat leaders.
It would appear Gen. Dempsey was unimpressed with Ryan's allegations, which were made without proof.
The question for members of Congress is whether they consider the chairman of the Joint Chiefs more credible about necessary Pentagon spending or the right-wing Budget Committee chairman, who has no experience in the military or in national security policy at any level.
Or put another way, Gen. Dempsey is, in effect, saying, "We don't need this money to keep America safe." To which Ryan is, in effect, replying, "You do need this money, and if you disagree, you're not telling the truth."
As for suggesting that U.S. military leaders are, in Dempsey's word, "liars," it'll be interesting to see if Ryan reconsiders the nature of his criticisms.

Has anyone asked Romney how he feels about being CINC over this pack of "liars"? After all, he has endorsed this budget in spite of the military's advice.
I'm glad to see this write-up. It's a about time that Republicans are held accountable in some form for their endless "magical thinking" comments. Tell a Republican pol the truth and/or regale them with some facts, and they will reply with a standard answer: "I don't believe it." And that is supposed to trump all. I'm sick and tired of them getting away with what should be their laughable responses.
The unmitigated arrogance of these republicans is nothing short of fascinating to witness. It's one thing to disrespect and bully the nation's female population with unnecessary and invasive laws and requirements, quite another to try bullying the mightiest peacekeeping machine ever known to humankind. Ryan, it's a tad late. But little boy, you really do need to sit down and shut up now, because you're about to let your smart mouth write a much bigger check than your skinny a-- can possibly cash.
if that spindly wuss from Wisconsin would care to put on a uniform and go to a hot zone to see how much he knows about defense, i suspect the biggest line item in thedefense budget would be for clean underwear.
I totally agree. Wisconsin is increasingly embarrassed by the politicians that bumbled into office thanks to the Tea Party. We're taking care of that.
Let us not forget this wuss works out everyday building his muscles and making himself strong, so he can watch himself flex in the mirror, because he certainly did not volunteer for Afghanistan or Iraq wars.
One only need to look to their motivations to see what's real here; Gen. Dempsey's motivation is to efficiently and effectively preserve the safety and freedom of the people of the United States. Ryan's motivation is to keep the money flowing to preserve his investment growth in the M-I Complex.
It's fascinating what unabashed aholes today's Republicans are, whether they're Randian libertarians, Kristol neoconservatives, or the tedious Tea-diots.
Jesus Tapdancing Christ... I mean, the man is saying KEEP YOUR MONEY, use it to pay down the defecit, or I dunno, help out people who need the money, maybe get someone some healthcare. By God, we can't win for losing, can we?
That's that whole Republican ideology that really just gets me...."NO, no, no...I know you THINK you know what's good for you, but really we do know over here on the right. We know what you need. Also, instead of explaining to you peons what you really need, we're just gonna act in your stead on what we think you need. Just let ME do it FOR you, I can't be bothered to prove why I need to!"
They use that same argument for every existing thing.
I fully believe Paul Ryan is mentally unsound. Of course, he's only but one in the republican party who's got a few screws loose.
It's clear Ryan's brain synapses do not function properly. If they did, he would not be raising a budget proposal that was previously stricken, nor would he be offering comments about topics with which he is entirely unfamiliar and unqualified to address. If one looks into the proper definition of a person suffering from insanity, it appears Ryan qualifies. This does not say much for the mental stability of those who voted him into officer either.
His age is showing.
Every time I see Ryan's name, I think "where are you now that we really need you, Lee Harvey Oswald?"
Ryan has obviously been imbibing too many free drinks down at the Ego Bar.
What about Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia?
that would work, too.
Totally uncalled for. You should put a cork in it.
Agreed. I don't want those scoundrels dead; I just want them out of power, never to darken the towels of Congress again. Too bad about those life pensions and medical benefits they walk away with; though being upright men of principal, they’d naturally eschew them and tainted government handouts, if only they could.
Gee, I assumed he was speaking metaphorically --- you know, like that map with bullseyes on it that Palin came out with, the one that said "Time to take a stand!" That was just metaphorical, right?
The entire Republican propaganda machine will firmly and loudly blast Dempsey to support Ryan. After all, Dempsey does not stand up and sing before testifying: "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran." What good's a general who doesn't want to start a war?
What Republicans lie? This is the first time I heard anything like that!!!
Just kidding they lie all the time
Gen. Dempsey showed a lot more maturity and restraint than Ryan did. He didn't once mention that Ryan never had served in any of the services, not even in AmeriCorps. He could have gone on to some length about Ryan's character or better, lack of character.
If Ryan is called out for his remarks, he will simply insist, "That's not what I meant at all," followed by a bunch of talking points laced with buzzwords, non sequiturs and bull@!$%#. That's how that vacant-eyed @!$%#wit rolls.
Wow, you're now flagging cusswords and replacing them with strings of special characters. I don't like censorship, but I have to admit that's pretty @!$%#ing cool. Better to have you doing it than me.
Too bad, though, that you can't do the same with commenters advocating political assassinations.
Gee, here's the head of the most respected institution in the country taking exception to being called a liar by a member of the least respected institution in the country.
Who'll come out ahead, do you think?
Ryan should remember one very important thing.....the Chairman has SEAL Team 6 on Speed dial.
Oh rach, just saw a little pic of you in the corner in the url field! (just observing) but I have been reading your new book "Drift" and its so funny how there are a lot of similarities to be drawn between the overall subject of your new book, and Paul Ryan's crusade to pump up our military force to combat invisible forces who seek to harm us, while old people get vouchers and working people get cut off from food stamps. History has a tendency to repeat itself....
This story literally made my night. Or maybe week. It's time to put a cork in it, Ryan. Sad to think this is the guy the GOP thinks is the future of the party. The ego of this guy....it's unbelievable.
I'm trying to figure out where he gets his beliefs from. He strikes me as being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. One thing I have noticed lately, is that the GOP shufflers haven't shuffled over to a microphone lately. I used to get a big kick out of how they walked over to the Mic. They could have done a SNL skit on them. And they all looked really mean. Like really mean uncles. Oh, no here come the Shufflers. It's kind of like Monty Python's "The Bishop" without the Peter Gunn music. Oh, no where are the shufflers going now?
Well maybe the Military can intercede in the War Of The Two Paul Ryans...
Will his Catholic religiosity prevail or will his Ayn Rand worship at the altar of atheistic, godless capitalism emerge as the One True Paul Ryan?
Who knows. Definitely, his Guy Who Has a Calendar won't win. Seventh term in Congress and he only now figures out people born between 1946-1954 are retiring in massive numbers. But heck, since this demographic tends to vote Republican (pining for the past, fearful of the future is what the end of life gives many folks) let's pretend it's those who are ten years younger that are the REAL problem, huh Paulie.
Any way you slice it you get RAMPANT HYPOCRISY!
You know what his college cronies told him, " get into politics that's where the money is" You don't have to work just sit back make up a bunch of Bulldinky and enjoy an early retirement. It's the biggest scam out there. Plus the Muppets don't really need to eat or go to the doctor. They have confused, quite conveniently, fairness for hand-outs. The Tea Party has convinced the Republicans that Democrats are asking for hand-outs when all we are asking for is fairness for all Americans. We are currently living in a Country where it's people are treated very unfairly in almost all aspects of life.
Rachel and her "left-wing" followers should appreciate a "right-wing" congressman calling the pentagon liars. For the last 10 years, they have had the same opinion. Now, you believe they are telling the truth.
That is a lie. The fact is the Left has never called the Military liars unless we had the proof that they lied. We did repeatedly call the Bush Administration liars because that is exactly what they were. They lied about WMD's, Iraq's involvement in 9/11, Iraq's open support of Terrorism and a whole bunch more.
The ONLY members of the Military that we called liars were the ones that were bought and paid for by the GOP and we only did that by showing the FACTS that they were in fact telling a lie. But Ryan never has any facts.
J.J. sometimes people grow a conscience. Sometimes people grow up and realize they have children they need to protect.
Richard: Progressives, John Kerry, and others have said worse than calling them liars. You probably missed it. No proof at all.
And now some of us have a higher consciousness. While others remain stagnant and closed minded some grow. You lose, you learn. If you keep winning you still have much to learn.
Shumuwada:
If you wanted to protect your children you would see the world as it is not as your "higher consciousness" wishes it would be.
It will be those you call stagnant and closed minded who are going to protect you and your children. All the while those people will be getting stabbed in the back by you and other Progressives who will be criticizing their every action and siding with those who wish to kill us. Please stop thinking you are more evolved, it makes you appear arrogant and condescending.
Richard:
Progressives have never provided one shred of evidence that GW went to war for oil. If we went to war for oil, it’s odd that we did not take the Iraqi oil but gave it to them.
Remember this gem: http://youtu.be/b7FaSEQ-fKc
The worst part about your leaders is many voted to go to
war and then immediately began to undermine it to gain political points.
They believed Iraq was working on WMDs and when none were found, acted like they had nothing to do with starting the war at the expense of our soldiers.
Rachel was one of the chief purveyors of this myth. It's like everything else, these leaders create problems by their decisions with health care, immigration and energy and act like they had nothing to do with it.
There is no denying Progressives caused the death of U.S. soldiers. As they
criticized the war and sided with our enemies, deaths went up and the effort was
set back. GW made the situation worse by listening to the criticism. Rachel and those who watch her show were cheering everytime they could report the death of soldiers.
I am not cheering now that President Obama has tied the hands of our
soldiers with crazy rules of engagement that have caused the deaths of hundreds
of soldiers.
I say bring them home if they are not going to be allowed to
protect themselves.
It's ridiculous to argue that Progressives have any concern for the military. They have only contempt.
J.J. I am not paranoid like yourself. You are afraid. You need to do a little more studying concerning ancient history. This time take the blinders off. President Obama has taken away a lot of our fears. Ask Bin Ladin if you have any concerns about that one. Apparantally, you haven't noticed a shift lately. You must have or you wouldn't be blogging on a liberal forum. God is protecting my family just fine, thanks. If you want things to be different you must do things differently. Take a deep breath, noone is trying to kill you. You live in the dark, It's not so nice is it? I once lived there. Trust God, let go and vote for President Obama. He's our best bet out of this mess, trust me.
Shumwada:
You are not listening like we were not listening when the last Progressive President was in office, Bill Clinton. Bin Ladin declared war on us. I guess the people who thought we should be concerned about that were just "paranoid." Ancient History - listen to what people say and what they do and make your judgement. The evidence is all around you.
Those people are called terrorist. They are in comparison to Hitler or Insane dictators. In America we have serial killers. I'm sure a lot of people from other countries are afraid of and hate our serial killers. And some of them have been told to hate us also from their government. But, there is a vast amount of people in these countries who do not hate us. There is a vast amount of Americans in this country who do not hate them either just because of a few bad apples. We are not our serial killers. They are not their terrorist. Why did Bin Ladin kill innocent people. Why have we killed innocent people.
Link to GOP criticizing Obama for not listening to Generals. The standard double standard.
http://www.gop.com/index.php/briefing/comments/meeting_but_not_listening
Now , of course, he is being criticized for listening to them.
Also, there is much evidence that GWB knowingly used evidence for going to war in Iraq that was not valid, ie: aluminum tubes for centrifuges from africa
Shumuwada:
The fact that you are unable to see the difference between what we do and what Bin Ladin did, is proof that Progressives are unable to make valid comparisons. They believe telling a lie about having sex in the oval office with an intern is the same as saying a new haircut looks great when it doesn't.
There is really no hope for you. You are not watching or listening. You all claimed Bush was a fool for thinking democracy would work in the middle east. Perhaps, but it does tell us where the people's hearts are. I don't think anyone in the U.S. would vote a serial killer into office, but in the middle east, a majority of the people are with the killers. The votes tell us that!
Bob:
Progressives for eight years said Bush was an idiot, but when it comes to the Iraq war, all of your leaders argue that idiot fooled them with alleged "cooked up" information.
Democrats went along with the war because they believed Iraq was building the bomb, and when it turned out the intelligence was bad, they threw Bush under the bus for political gain at the expense of the country.
61% of the Democrats in the house and 42% in the Senate voted against going to Iraq.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Resolution
Evidence has shown that the Bush administration was grabbing anything they could use to validate the war. The fact that it convinced about half the Democrats to vote for it doesn't validate their action.
Maybe it will transform the middle east, they seem to be doing that on their own now.
But considering the current economy and debt could we really afford it? Cost is reported across a broad range but the low is about 800 billion
Obama is doing quite well against the terrorists and al Qaeda using special forces and drones. This is how it should have been handled from the beginning instead of massive military invasions.
The Generals, the Chiefs of Staff, have been watching their men being killed for the Halliburton/Kellogg-Brown and Root meat grinder since Korea.
Dick Cheyney got a heart transplant, while the only medical procedure he should be eligible for is lethal injection.
Anna Brown died on a jail cell floor
http://youthrevolutionarycouncil.org/?p=1073
And of course WE the Tax Payers paid for that operation even though he is a Millionaire. Just like Clinton has done. I believe that these people, including the 62% of Congress who are Millionaires, should pay for their own Health Care. If we as Tax Payers can not get basic Health Care, why should the Millionaires get Cadillac quality Health Care at our expense?
The 1% have had it soooo good for soooo long they are afraid of losing it and they failed the test in kindergarten that graded us on how well we share and on how well we get along with others.
Magda:
Your hatred is apparent for more than just the former vice president and the system
of government we have.
You see enemies where there are none and friends where there are enemies.
History shows us where your beliefs take us. Governments you favor have come to power
in places like Cambodia. It is never pretty and those who help them come to
power usually end up in re-education camps.
Keep
festering.
All we are saying is give Peace a chance. There was a close minded man and he lived in Pakistan. He is no longer with us. He was paranoid quite like yourself. He thought it was either his way or no way. This country has an opportunity here to sit down and to talk with world leaders. If we will agree to disagree everything would be ok. You will have your occasional fanatic or fascist. We don't need to encourage our fanatics and fascist here at home and there is definately no room for them at the table. If there is ever to be world peace it will happen without their help. A lot of people are moving forward toward this goal, you can call it the rapture if you prefer. Those who are left behind will have to answer as to why they hated so much. Then Jesus may once again utter or maybe it will be Muhamed. Forgive them father for they know not what they do.
Sound's like the 1960's got to you. I am not paranoid if thousands rush into the streets of their cities to cheer the death of 3,000 of my fellow citizens and in later years they rush to the street to cheer deaths or demand our destruction calling us the great satin and they elect leaders who say the world won't be right until we no longer exist. I listen. If they stop expressing this hatred for you and I. Peace will have a chance.
Maybe they wouldn't be taught to hate us if we stayed out of their countries and weren't such an obvious target to blame for their misery.
They are not ready to join the civilized world when they want to behead someone who wants to convert to another religion and kill cartoon and book writers. The less we have to do with the middle east the better. Trying to impose western democracy and ideas on them could be futile. Afghanistan looks hopeless. Iraq does look like it could work. But we have empowered Iran by removing Hussein. Always something...where does it end?
Of course we all know that ONLY Ryan's comments will be played on Fixed Noise and the comments from the Chairman will never be heard on any GOP supported show. And I believe that is why these people do this. They want the low IQ watchers of Fox to see their outlandish comments because MOST of them lack the ability to verify any statements that are made.
When a member of The Congress of the United States of America calls the Leaders of the United States Military liars something is definately wrong. It could be a screw loose or a whole jar full of loose screws.
LOLOLOL!!! A member of the Republican Party calling someone else liars!!!
This new group that calls themselves Republicans has a BAD CASE of pathological projection. Do they really think that by clothing themselves in religion that the rest of us won't see it?
Richard, agree. Congress should have n o better than the rest of us. They all get rich in office.
Thanks for your coverage of this. It is amazing that Congressional Republicans are willing to go up against the DoD in attempt to criticize President Obama. Stunning.
