Happy Monday! Here's the guest list for tonight:
Jay Bookman, columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Michael Beschloss, NBC News presidential historian
While watching tonight's video preview, here's tonight's soundtrack for your listening enjoyment. (Just be sure to allow the ad below to play out entirely before starting the song)
Here's senior show producer Cory Gnazzo with a look at what's to come:

"How the Republican Party has moved so far to the right," - Umm, I'd say they've moved so far to the right they have now fallen off the edge of their known world! I wonder how many hover devices the GOP own as a whole?!? lol
Dear Producer Cory Gnazzo,
You are playing with me , right ? OK. I admit it. I want a 3D serial to the Sc Fi Firefly as well. Personal note, I always went for the brontosaurs , only one I could draw.
I love Holland. I really love Amsterdam. In the mid-sixteen hundreds Holland was the " safe house " for many our greatest thinkers. Respect for all people, even ones you did not agree with, seemed required in that place. Kind of American , no ?!
Where did Santorum get his information about Universities in California not offering History? Fox News?
I'm sure later he will offer an explanation or will he attack another journalists for reporting what he said?
If Santorum had said that a course in American history is not required to get an undergraduate degree from these schools, he would have been correct.
"The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, in a report called "Losing America's Memory: Historical Illiteracy in the 21st Century," charged that 55 colleges and universities, including the most prestigious, have no American history requirement and only a fifth of colleges require any course in history at all."
Taken from http://www.eagleforum.org/column/2003/aug03/03-08-06.shtml
Santorum needs to talk to some pro golfers and learn how to control his nerves and perform well under pressure!
While these courses might not qualify as "American History" per se, they are, in fact, history courses:
http://student.ucsf.edu/gencat/history_of_health_sciences.html
This program includes such provocative anti-American courses as:
219
Introduction to the History of American Medicine, 1900-1950
216
Psychiatry in the United States
Even the medicos care about the history of their profession.
I am so happy that are President is standing up for Woman's right's. I took my girlfriend to Planned Parenthood back in 1992 because we did not have insurance. After a full physical - which neither one of us could afford at a regular hospital- it turned out she was in perfect health. Woman in need should have a service like this and I am more than willing to put my tax dollars toward this.
To all those running against Tea Party candidates , you need only to ask one question. How will you do this ? Be a little Thomas Edison that got kicked out of school for doing it , and keep asking the question. How ? And sometimes , Why, as well.
The Tea Party is revealing itself to be something very different from what it claimed to be in 2010, when the mob of voters reflexively elected a whole slew of ultra-conservative reactionaries to legislatures all over the country. They know that the voters have realized their error now, and they are trying to pass all the laws that will allow them to hold their heads high in their fundamentalist evangelical church back home, after we throw the bastards out of office.
This is far from the end of it, too. There is a monstrous heap of good solid Christian Values to legislate, still. I think we will continue to see attempts to legislate morality by the Republican controlled state legislatures right up to the day they are replaced.
Most teachers would have hated Thomas Edison. He was an terrible student… Just saying.
It's long overdue for me to tell America of the Serious Multiple Criminal Actions against me and the woman I loved by Samuel A. Alito when he was the top Federal Attorney of the disgraceful State of New Jersey! All in the interest of a serial drunk driving and crashing Police Officer who was employed by West Caldwell NJ where she, I and Sammy Boy Alito lived..! This Lawrence Case hits to close to home for me..!
This is 1st hand not hearsay...!
Well since no one else has said it, happy 39th Birthday Dr. Maddow! I hope you have many more years of success and happiness
Suck up.
When will you bring on Governor Granholm to explain that SHE used the emergency financial manager law in several instances and it was never a problem. I will grant you that the law has been strengthened since she used it; however, she still implemented a plan that diminished the rights of voters in school districts or cities.
Perhaps when you move to Michigan, and as a state taxpayer you are asked to guaranty some of the debt of these entities, you too would say enough.
You can disagree with Governor Snyder on methods, but no one can accuse him of not trying to work out a deal with Detroit, Benton Harbor or other cities or school districts. Whether you like it or not, the alternative will quickly be a Chapter 9 filing and then everyone loses everything. A judge, who lives somewhere other than Michigan most likely, will be making the decisions. But you know what, that would still be better than what is going on today. Let the filings begin. At least the lawyers and accountants will get a stimulus package out of it.
Interesting and valid points that you raise. I too watched the show tonight and have watched the anti democratic efforts of the State of Michigan for over a year. Rachel is almost the only person talking about it. I do think it would be informative to have Granholm address Benton Harbor and other similar issues on the Maddow show, although I recollect she may have already been on the show one time.
Having said that, however, it really is anti-democratic for states to take over control of schools and municipalities because they deem the governmance bad. Here in Georgia, we had a duly elected Board of Education in a southern suburban Atlanta school system (different county and majority AA). They couldn't get their act together and the schools in that system all lost their accreditation. The governor was about to take over the running of the schools. However, the board finally got its act together enough to get the school's accreditation back. That was a couple of years back and it was the former Rep Governor who threatened to do just that. It truly was a mess. However, even in those instances, the voters still need to determine their own fate at the ballot box and live with the consequences. Just like we are many of us sadly living with the consequences of 2010.
Allow me to offer a minor correction; the grand & glorious state of Michigan is "epic" every year. (Thanks for noticing!)
Rachel Maddow will never talk about Gov. Granholm's use of the emergency financial manager law because Granholm is a liberal democrat.
Maddow's style is to pick a clever/snarky narrative on some topic, hammer it home again and again, and ignore any evidence that might complicate the narrative -- such as that liberal politicians sometimes use the same questionable techniques that conservative politicians use.
Remember the time a guest on her show pointed out that Sherrod Brown advocated wasteful Pentagon spending in his district that Maddow was attacking Republicans for advocating? She ignored the comment and to my knowledge has never again mentioned it, even when she's had Sherrod Brown on her show.
She's doing the same thing with the "anti-democracy Michigan Republicans" narrative she's been repeating for the past six months or so.
BTW I am not a conservative. This critique is given from the progressive side.
Dear Justice,
We are writing to you in eternal faith that this letter will eventually find you, and as a result you will again discover us, who are here desperately anticipating your immediate return to our presence. In wake of your absence, it is difficult to discern the exact moment of your departure. It seems as though we lifted our heads on day, to realize with a paralyzing sense of despair that you had vanished from our midst. And yet keener senses, those among us consistently conscious and aware, could see you slipping away slowly…like sands from an hourglass…long before that instant.
Perhaps we are partially to blame. Perhaps, in an ironic sort of way, the fault is our own for not remaining… for not RESIDING in constant pursuit of you. Perhaps we took you for granted, shortsightedly believing that without protection, without safeguard, and without vigilance that you would remain a constant staple in our world. I imagine you to be perplexed; you must wonder if anyone on the planet still possesses the ability to recognize your value, because it remains unseen in the actions of the powerful if we do. But should this letter reach you, across space and time, by the grace of the energy that created al l that is, please know that we are dependent on you for our very survival…in every way…whether each of use chooses to acknowledge that truth or not.
We desire you, Justice, at the very deepest, most basic, primal level of our beings. And yet time and again throughout history we have rejected you in blind denial of our own nature. You are inherently a part of us, an extension of all that we truly are, and separation from the purest part of ourselves is no longer an option we are willing to endure. We will vibrate to your tune and draw you back to where you truly belong: here with us. Embedded in our hearts, working on our minds, in the base of every soul, in the core of our spirits, and nestled in the womb of our collective conscience…which can then bear truth and light into this reality. With one voice, we all graciously demand your return.
As we write to you Justice there are insidious phantoms lurking, masquerading in your name, that are attempting to mislead the masses in great numbers. They contribute the greatest of efforts to drown our impending illumination with a dark cloak of suppression, and to stall our evolution with weapons harnessed against us, designed to force us back to where we’ve progressed from. We can only withstand such an assault for so long.
Even as you encounter these words, Justice, we remain fully aware that wherever you are in your exile, you are there with HER. We know that you cease to exist in the instant of separation from her. We know that the breadth of your life is derived from her, and only within her realm can you truly take your rightful place among us. For this reason, we must respectfully request her return to us as well. For yours is a duality essential to any future we can hope for. LOVE, in al l her indescribable beauty has also gone missing and undoubtedly you followed her, Justice, to a place in the universe where you could seek refuge from the wars waged against you. The next lines of this letter belong only to her…Love.
Accompanied in my waiting/It’s you that I crave/My tongue tastes nothing/As I’m sleepless for days/Tired eyes glaze over/As I contemplate the ways/ To prove to you my devotion, Love, that my focus never strays/ I can go for days/Couldn’t even count the ways/ That I’m ready, willing, able to be your servant, yes, your slave/ I will work unpaid/ At your alter I have laid/ I’m your tool so you can use me, Love, until your work is made/ We are unafraid/ We are fearless/ And well aware that many won’t want to hear this/ Following your return will be Justice/ And as the unfamiliar witness, they will question “what’s this?”/ As you return to us, please return with a vengeance/ Because here we are surviving underneath a death sentence/ Expected to merely just exist/Not to flourish, but to only just subsist/ We will no longer stand for our demands to be dismissed/ We are billions of hands/ Joined in one fist/ Where are you Love? /Please come here and find us/ We desperately need you to remind us/ Of past battles fought/ And the legions who died/ Of the reasons we marched/ And the oceans that were cried/ Of how we’ve forgotten/ And left our past behind us/ We cannot persist Love, without your intervention/ Invoke Justice, because we need ALL of your attention/ We need you to cloak us in your essence/ As your students/ We’ll immerse ourselves in each and every lesson/ On this planet, your return will be a blessing/ As your soldiers we are armed with truth and THAT is our protection/ As our compass, just point us/ In the right direction/ We vote for YOU, Love/ And Justice/ In THE PEOPLE’s ELECTION/ We vote for YOU, LOVE/ And Justice/ In THE PEOPLE’s ELECTION.
...And so Justice, you see now that the new era is upon us, beckoning from a place in the future that awaits humanity eagerly. We cannot enter that sacred space without you...both of you...surrounding us just as the oxygen that nourishes our lungs. And so we go to war, Justice. We go to war with the darkest instincts of our own souls and wage a battle of our own, a battle of the ages for the future that all of humanity deserves.
The spirit of a warrior lives inside all of us, waiting to be called upon in that moment of necessity. For the majority it sits dormant, pressed deeply back inside the farthest reaches of the human spirit, held down by the pressure of dreams unrealized. There it abides patiently, with all of the discipline acquired during battles fought in lives lived long ago. It is this spirit, Justice, that will find you again; it is this spirit that will save you, so that you may save us also.

Is it really Rachel's Birthday today? Happy Birthday!!!!:)
Today actually isn't her birthday. Her birthday was yesterday. Yes, that's right, our lovely Maddow was born on April Fool's Day. I have to imagine the exchange went something like this:
Rachel's Mom- Honey I'm going into labor!
Rachel's Dad- Haha that's a good April Fool's Day joke honey, ya got me!
Rachel's Mom- It's not a joke!!!!!!!
Rachel's Dad- OH CRAP!
Anyways she was really surprised last year when people got Twitter to trend Maddow's birthday when she turned 38 and she's been talking about how nervous she is to turn 40 so I thought I'd give her some fan-love. When she turns 40 then we'll all have to start wishing her Happy 21st B-day
On your map of the 10 U.C. Campuses, you missed one. Hastings, the law school in San Francisco, is also a U.C. campus. Like U.C.S.F. It is only a grad school, but a U.C. nonetheless.
I love Cory Gnazzo. He always looks and sounds so happy. I could listen to him talk all day. :)
The segment on Santorum tonight was probably the funniest thing I have ever seen on television. The UC system has banned the teaching of American history? Wow. I thought that President Bush was insane, but this new crop of Republican candidates have really gone over the deep end. Why not nominate a grilled cheese sandwich? It would demonstrate more intelligence. I'm just stunned. If the Republicans don't stop themselves, they are going to become so conservative that they will actually become liberals.
Just watched tonight's show and never once did Ms. Maddow mention that Obama is FOR the strip searches that were before the Supreme Court. Yet they kept a picture up of Obama with the words "I fought the law" Sorry Ms. Maddow, but your deception didn't work on me. You should be ashamed of yourself, but this is typical of the Obamabots. I bet Rachel won't do a segment on how Obama keeps over-riding FDA decisions in favor of politics and corporations (as reported in today's NYT).
Why didn't Ms. Maddow mention that Obama is for the Strip searches upheld by the Supreme Court? Deceitful at the least I'd say. Typical Obamabot. You should be ashamed of yourself.
New rule: The pro-life movement must be split in two - the pro-life and the anti-abortion. And while we are at it, let's gather all the anti-abortion people on a big raft on the Atlantic Ocean so that they can get to the Netherlands and protest there.
THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! Abortion is legal in all developped countries in the world and is no longer an issue; it was delt with in the late 70s! GET WITH THE PRGRAM AMERICANS!!
"This is classic Rick Santorum making-it-up moment.." His first few words were "I was just reading something last night" Rick is a victim like the rest(most) of us, when it comes to being given false information on his(et al) internet, so you can't really say he's making it up. He's dancing the dance he was told to dance, blindfolded. Not to mention that when you're looking for a boogie-man everywhere, everything looks like a boogie-man. He clearly has some issues, or he wouldn't be as driven to make changes.
Interesting fact: Politifact agrees with Rachel Maddow this time -- on the business with Santorum's idiotic claims about California universities. And Politifact adds some interesting background -- namely, that Santorum appears to be repeating in a totally garbled form some rather different claims made in a Wall St. Journal column about the "indoctrination" of students in California. Worth checking out.
