I'm waiting for someone (the media, prosecutors at a trial) to put the testimony of all the eyewitnesses together, with drawings to show what they saw (or heard) and from where, and how close, with a second-by-second time-line.
George Zimmerman reportedly has told the police and his father, the retired judge, that Trayvon Martin was on top of him, beating the crap out of him, but somehow Zimmerman got his gun free, while Zimmerman was crying for help, and shot Martin, stopping him. Sounds like self-defense, doesn't it?
But from what I've heard witnesses say so far, following this struggle George Zimmerman somehow ended up on top of Trayvon Martin. Straddling him, Zimmerman placed both hands from above on Martin's still-twitching body beneath him (where was Zimmerman's gun at this time, back in its holster?), subduing him further, keeping him pressed face-down in the grass, telling one of the eyewitnesses to call the police. Then Zimmerman stood up and walked away from Martin's body, per another eyewitness, with Zimmerman probably getting off the top of Martin because the twitching had stopped and Martin was dead, lying face-down in the grass.
Does this match what Zimmerman told police that night or during the walk-through the next day? In these types of cases, something always trips up someone trying to hide or lie about what really happened, like two forensic voice experts being pretty certain it wasn't Zimmerman crying for help that night, leaving only Trayvon Martin as the one crying for help.
IOW, how long was Zimmerman atop Martin, who was lying face-down, fatally shot, dying in the grass, his body twitching in its death throes when witnesses arrived?
Scenario 1: If Martin was on top of Zimmerman when the fatal shot was fired (as Zimmerman has said) then Martin would have collapsed on top of Zimmerman (if the shot fired was instantly fatal), meaning that for Zimmerman to be on top afterward (as per the eyewitnesses) he would have had to push Martin's body off of him, flopping it over and to the side, or Zimmerman would have rolled over until Martin was beneath, possibly holstering his gun at that point, once he was on top of Martin and "in control." In either case, Martin's body would have been found on his back, not face-down, and arriving eyewitnesses would have seen Zimmerman pressing his hands against Martin's chest instead of his back.
Scenario 2: The fatal shot didn't instantly kill Trayvon Martin, who Zimmerman says was on top of him. Martin, fatally wounded, crawls a short distance before collapsing face-down, not having enough strength left to continue crying for help, it's over but he's still trying to get away from the stranger who hunted him down and shot him. Zimmerman then gets up, goes over to Martin who's gasping out his last breaths, squats on him, pressing him to the ground, until the twitching stops. Before the eyewitnesses saw him in this position, did Zimmerman frisk the twitching Martin for a weapon, but upon not finding one, why then did he continue to press down on Martin with both hands?
Maybe I missed something in these two scenarios, but Trayvon Martin (after being shot and on top, according to Zimmerman's "scenario") somehow had to end up off Zimmerman and lying face-down in the grass. Presumably Zimmerman, that night or the next day, either explained or reenacted how this happened, or he didn't. If not, why not? Did anyone ask him specifics? The sealed coroner's report will probably help clarify what happened (entry point of the bullet or bullets, angle of entry, powder burns, if any, bruising, etc.), but with a Florida Republican special prosecutor now running the show, one who likes to try and convict teenagers as adults, who knows if anyone outside the scheduled grand jury will ever see this coroner's report, even Trayvon Martin's family.
Which leads to Scenario 3: The fatal shot was from a distance, thus leaving no powder burns on Martin's body. Front shot or back, Martin could have ended up on his face in the grass. But, once again, why was Zimmerman found straddling Martin's body, pressing it to the ground? Frisking Martin for a "concealed" weapon?
IOW, I believe (as many others) that only a public trial, with people testifying under oath, can get to the bottom of what happened that night, because on the night of the killing, the lead homicide investigator, Chris Serino, recommended manslaughter charges be filed for some reason (he was "unconvinced" by Zimmernan's account, but why?), but Serino was overruled by someone higher up (also for some reason, and apparently on behalf of someone lobbying to not have manslaughter charges filed against George Zimmerman, but who?).
If there is no criminal trial, I wonder if a civil suit against Zimmerman for depriving Trayvon Martin of his civil rights would be possible? That might be a way for the facts to have an airing in open court rather than in a grand jury which is the creature of the prosecuting attorney.
I graduated from both a California city college and university. I can assure you they have American History classes and it was one of the mandatory classes to take before you graduate from them.
