House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) made all kinds of errors of fact and judgment on CBS this morning, but this was the most irksome.
"This election is going to be a referendum on the president's economic policies. They've not only not helped the economy, they've actually made it worse," he said.
"When you look at his higher taxes, his refusal to deal with the debt, the regulatory regime here in Washington out of control, they've scared every businessperson and investor in America," said Boehner of the administration.
What worries me is that I have no idea whether Boehner believes his own rhetoric. He's the Speaker of the House, so presumably he has some general appreciation for acknowledging current events, which would mean he realizes none of his talking points is true.
While Boehner talks about Obama's "higher taxes," Obama has actually cut taxes. While Boehner said Obama has refused to deal with the debt, Obama offered Boehner a $4 trillion debt-reduction plan that Republicans rejected. While Boehner frets over a "regulatory regime," Obama has actually created fewer regulations than his Republican predecessor.
And then there's the notion that Obama made the economy "worse."
Look, Boehner is probably a busy guy, but it's not unreasonable to think he'd take some time to update his talking points from time to time. An economy that was shrinking when Obama took office is now growing, and an economy that was hemorrhaging jobs is now creating jobs. The Speaker thinks the administration has "scared every businessperson and investor in America," but corporate profits are up and the stock market has soared over the last three years.
Mitt Romney, the man Boehner has endorsed, has acknowledged several times that the economy has improved since Obama became president, and members of Boehner's own far-right caucus agree (they want credit for the progress).
John Boehner doesn't have to like the good news, but he really shouldn't lie about it.

This upcoming presidential contest is bound to be among the tightest in american history, no matter what does or does not happen with the economy or the other issues important to voters. The ups and downs of random polls are irrelevant, because they simply mask the eventual corrections that will leave Obama and Romney neck and neck until Election Day. Nothing will change that fact. Voters will be faced with a simple choice of whether they want to move the country forward or whether they want to turn the clock back by decades and reshape America into a right-wing social and economic experiment. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
Decades? That's putting it mildly. The Republicans are thinking more in terms of centuries.
Frankly, I think Obama will win easily in November. The problem is that there are not enough Rachel Maddows out there to set the record straight. The 1%ers control most of the media outlets and have their minions shout their anti-government, anti-Obama lies to the exclusion of truth tellers. The 1%ers have even invaded the so-called "liberal" media e.g. Washington Post, New York Times. Check them out. So you have to be careful to evaluate what you hear in an increasing number of media.
What gets me most about the 1% controlled Republicans is that they think that the majority of Americans will believe their lies. After all, they had 42% of Republicans believe the birther lie ---42%! The American public is not that gullible. When the lies are exposed, they vote the right way. Witness Wisconsin and Ohio. More power to the truth-tellers.
I don't understand how people are believing Mitt Romney
when he keeps telling people lies about President Obama,
Romney states that Obama is making the economy worse
even though there has been job growth every month for
thirty eight straight months.
He also says things about Obama's failed policies. I'm
asking, are they Obama's failed policies, or is it
Congress not letting Obama's policies come to a vote. I
just saw the Senate not let the Buffett rule get a vote.
I feel that there is a big difference in failed policies
and blocked policies. The Republicans obstruct every
thing that Obama puts on the table. Congress won't let
Obama put any thing in play.
Also, Romney does not answer questions. In all of the
debates and the interviews I've seen him participate
in, he only gives an answer one of twenty times that
he is asked a question. The ones that he does answer,
are things that don't show what his position on the
topic. How can people believe in or vote for a person
that won't say what his goals are?
What I'm saying is that Romney must believe that if he
keeps telling people all of his lies that folks will
start to believe him. That is true for some Republicans.

But Boehner lies about everything else, why should he tell the truth about this?
Boehner probably believes what he's saying; after all, it's hard to see reality from the bottom of a bottle.
So you noticed the signs too. Good eye.
Oops, I said it again below before reading the comments. It doesn't just take a good eye, it takes familiarity.
He must be talking to the population of voters who do not have cable TV. I was going to disconnect my Cable TV because it's getting expensive. I think a good gesture would be to let The American Public have free access to cable news programs if only just during the Presidential race to the Whitehouse so that all Americans have access to the information that is out there. They are only getting local news and the local news they're getting is uninforming.
You think the best hope for people to be informed of basic economic facts is cable news? There is stupid there that does not sleep.
Well, without actually doing a full scale invesitgation on who is controlling cable TV. I guess we have to trust somebody. I'm trusting the group of people who are helping all groups of people. I don't know how you can pretend to do that. You either help them with good nutrition and longevity or you don't. You protect everyone from violence or you don't. Who will you vote for?
It's time to stop complaining about Boehner not knowing what he's talking about. Or any Republican for that matter. They know what they're doing, and it INTENTIONAL mendacity. I hope Steve expands his Friday "Mitt's Mendacity" to include the rest of the Republicans. If that's too much, then maybe just a greatest hits for each week on the non-Mitt falsehoods.
Again, Republicans know precisely what they're doing; it is intentionally lying to the country. And the country is made up with an unnerving percentage of ignoramuses and idiots who lap it all up.
Fire has to be fought with fire.
Exactly right. They indeed know what they are doing and haven't deviated one iota since Obama took office. He is being diminished and demonized by them daily. Think back to the State of the Union and Wilson's cry of, "you lie".
Nothing new in what they say about him today; especially Romney. So, let's say that Mitt's trees are the right height and that he has good hair even if no plan.
Boner knows what he is saying. The Republicans started out with little lies, never got called on it, started telling BIGGER lies, never got called on it and NOW they just LIE ALL THE TIME...and you wonder if he's stupid or confused? No. HE'S A LIAR and since the Republicans have nothing to run on that won't continue to support the rich and screw the poor, THEY LIE.
And the media is complicit with these lies. They do not challenge these lies and the politicians in both parties. If the media did its job, no Republican would agree to give interviews except to Fox News. Even the political debate moderators leave a lot to be desired.
Please, Mr Speaker, just one fact in support... just one...ONE!!!!
We need to raise the taxes on the "job creators" now. If you raise the taxes on them it forces them to hire someone because then they go after the tax deductions. If you cut the taxes on the "job creators" they won't hire someone because they don't need to take advantage of our tax system, well...we have seen the results. Raise thier taxes NOW!
He forgot to mention that Obama sold the Grand Canyon (in a no bid contract!) to Waste Management.
Lazy people believe lies...they do NO research for themselves; they do NOT seek independent objective sources. They want to believe "Daddy", who in this case, is the Republican Party (especially the extreme right) that seeks to comfort people with Religion and nostalgic "feel good" stuff.
Boner is a drunk, you don't spontaneously get all weepy unless you drink alcohol habitually. That being said, he is out of touch because of his "disease" and it's probably best to feel sorry for him.
I feel like a parrot: wow Mr. Boehner that's a serious accusation. First and foremost what does it mean to be 'scared'? Do you have any information to back up your claim that businesspersons and investors are meeting this definition of scared? Do you also have information to back up your claim that it's Obama's policies that have done this?
Putting aside the continual unabashed lying from BoneHead and McCackle, what about our side launching some push back with the LSM against their totally outrageous and, yes, disrespectful language: BoneHead (no I don't have to be respectful, I'm not a public official) talks about the President 'losing his courage' and McCackle rants that 'Obama is a disgrace'. This is an escalating of the 'you lie' behavior that should not be tolerated and certainly should not be ignored. At least until January 1, 2013 and probably until 2017, Barack Obama is President of the United States. You want to disagree with him fine, but calling him names is simply beyond the pale.
It's ALL the Sunday morning talking heads that NEVER challenge ALL the politicians and their prerecorded message that really drop the ball.
The easiest way to point out the absurdity of the "overregulation" meme is to point out how difficult it is these days for law school graduates to find jobs.
Who ever heard of gov't regulations that didn't go hand in hand with lawyers?
I guess the best description for Willard Mitt Romney is that it's a nice building, too bad the elevator doesn't go to the top floor. As for Ann Romney not working a day in her life, the comment about raising her children could and should fall on deaf ears because you can bet dimes to dollars that she spent less time with her children than the nannies did.
At long last Democrats have learned how to effectively counter Republican sloganeering with facts. When Romney says he's going to fix the broken economy, he doesn't say how, just that he will. Democrats point to economic growth over the past two years, a fact, and Romney's rhetoric ends up being just that, rhetoric. The days of "there you go again Mr. Predident" are over. Now it's "there you go again, Mr. Romney (Mr.. Speaker, etc.). And the message is hitting home with voters.
What's with the big oil propaganda keystone xl commercials all over the place? Smack dab in the middle of what I consider liberal media programming... preceding clips of the Rachel Maddow show... I've noticed we can't leave posts on your fb page anymore.. I understand big oil wants con us into thinking KXL will create millions of jobs and I get that you're owned by "big business"..... doesn't anyone have any say in this????? It's kind of insulting our intelligence....
