Drummer, singer, purveyor of the sublime, Levon Helm died this afternoon in New York City at age 71.
That's Levon singing "The Weight" with the rest of The Band and the Staple Singers in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Waltz." That's what it sounds like when it's good, and it's deep and it matters.

Indeed! Loved his voice and drumming and... he just had a way about him.
Look up "salt of the earth" in the dictionary and you will see his picture.
He also played the old gun expert that Mark Wahlberg goes to for advice in "Shooter"
Yes! And also acted opposite Loretta Lynn's set-in-his-ways coal miner dad in the great movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" (with Sissy Spacek as Lynn and Tommy Lee Jones as the husband who started her on the path to country music greatness)
levon helm's music marked and shaped my generation. thanks Levon. Thanks.
One of the best. He was a part of the "Americana" fabric.
Take a load off, Levon. Rest in Peace.
Marc Cohn has a good song, "Listening To Levon" in which he paints a picture of Mr. Helms influence on his life. I'll miss you Levon.
I'm really feeling this one, I've had Levon's unique voice running around in my head for a couple of days now. RIP Levon!
Time travel in four minutes. I was 27, skinny and hopeful. I am trying very hard to still be hopeful. Wonderful music can never be taken away.
Man, the season is here, my brother just died and my wife's brother is in hospice (any day now). I loved the Band, reminds me of my remaining brother who survived Vietnam and had reel to reel tape of the Band, among others.
I am sad enough… my younger brother dies on Easter, then Dick Clark, now Levon Helm. RIP all of you.
A nice tribute blast from the past Did Elton John and Bernie Taupin write this song about Levon Helms? My favorite The Band song!
RIP Levon. Your impact will be remembered.
Yes, RIP Levon, we'll miss you. Thanks for the great clip Kent.
I was raised on his music. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the Last Waltz, or sang The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down on car trips. When I heard this news I had tears in my eyes. But at least he's no longer in pain. Tonight will be spent listening to The Last Waltz.
"tryin' to find a place where I can lay my head." - I hope you've found just that, sir. RIP Levon Helm.
