Republican policymakers at the local, state, and federal level are targeting new restrictions in women's health; congressional Republicans are balking at the Violence Against Women Act; and GOP leaders, including the party's presumptive presidential nominee, won't take a stand in support of fair-pay laws for women.
Leave it to Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) to find a way to make matters worse.
On April 17, smack in the middle of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Gov. Rick Scott vetoed $1.5 million for the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence. The Legislature allotted the funds to the organization in order to support 30 rape crisis centers as they face impending reductions in collections, which currently is the bulk of their budgets. [...]
Jennifer Dritt, the executive director of the Florida Council, says she is "stunned" the funding was cut. She says the line-item was "new money" meant to ease the reduction in collections that rape crisis centers are facing.
Keep in mind, this money was approved by the Republican-led state legislature, but was removed by Scott himself, taking advantage of his line-item veto power.
The governor's press secretary told the Huffington Post the state "already funds sexual violence programs, and nobody was able to make it clear to [Scott] why rape crisis centers needed the new funding."
Dritt responded by pointing to the waiting lists at rape crisis centers: "Survivors are having to wait weeks, sometimes six weeks, in some programs three months to be seen. We included quotes from the programs about the waiting lists and what services they weren't able to offer because of a lack of money. There is clearly an unmet need."
That the Republican governor did this in the middle of Sexual Assault Awareness Month appears to be a coincidence.

It is NOT a coincidence, it is an indicator of the complete insensitivity of the GOP to women's issues. Completely inexcusable.
Oh but wait there's more... That certified POS just vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have allowed non-violent drug offenders to receive counseling instead of jail time thus saving millions of dollars .
Do you think it might have anything to do with his efforts to privatize prisons?
Counseling = less customers for for his private prison buddies . The best government money can buy . That Fu*ker is absolutely corrupt

In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott plans to put every Department of Corrections facility in the 18 counties of Southern Florida on the market, producing a windfall for the GEO Group, which has contributed more than $1 million to the Florida GOP. If GEO Group does what it has done in other states, potentially more than 5,000 experienced and qualified state corrections officers may find themselves replaced by unskilled, low-wage workers. Scott can claim that he is reducing costs, but experience demonstrates that any savings are short-lived. In the end, the costs will be higher for Florida’s taxpayers, as the private companies demand more taxpayer funds to boost their profits to pay their stockholders and fund lucrative salaries for their CEOs and top managers.
I think he was elected as governor. Some of the ire should be aimed at that electorate.
I was here . The anti Democrat (Alex Sink ) ads started long before he was even selected . Karl Roves enlightened group began trashing her early and often knowing what a Republican Supermajority would do to this state . And yes there are some exceptionally stupid people in the Redneckistan portion of the state who consistently vote against their own self interest as they love them some Faux Nooze. This was coupled with a low Dem turnout . He won by 51% and trust me he aint getting elected again . If we had a recall process he would have been long gone.
The Democratic nominee Alex Sink was an awful candidate. Think: Martha Coakley v Scott Brown. She was basically there by default since our bench is pretty paltry here. Too, she hired a bunch of bright young things most from out of state who were among the most off-putting, self-important know-it-all-but-know-nothing people I have ever encountered in any campaign in my many decades in state politics. Right up to and including their penchant for keeping a cell phone clamped to their ears while dressed in identical black sharkskin-type suits. Puhleeze.
Voldemort beat the colorless AG, Bill McCollum, for the Republican nomination through a combination of unlimited personal funds and negative ads which focused on McCollum's long record in public office -- an easy task for Voldemort as he had no record -- and by riling the Baggers by claiming National and State RINO Republican Party Leaders had "annointed" McCollum ahead of the Primary.
As for the super majorities who came in with him. OMG. There is just too, too much to detail. Suffice to say that I have not, for the 1st time since at least 1970, darkened the door of the Capitol during this biennium. It is that bad.
I can only say, really, what one of the most experienced and most respected Capitol Reporters said to me when we were talking a year or so ago: "This guy (Voldemort) is a disaster."
And all this saved money, where will it go?
Back to the people to revive or save social programs?
Or into the wallets of this guy's campaign contributors and future employers?
Every Republican misstep is an opportunity for the Dems.
This wasn't just an awkward misstep. It was a deliberate stomping of victims of sexual violence. It escalates the war against women to inhumane heights. I foretell a perilous fall for Rick Scott.
They are so completely tone deaf, not to mention compulsively misogynistic. They must know the position that they've put themselves in with women, and yet they can't seem to help themselves.
The War on Caterpillars continues! The wilder the grand old probers get, the better the chances for a huge electoral sweep for otherwise hapless Democrats.
You see this happen time and time again, and you have to ask yourself why would any sane, self-respecting woman even think of voting for a Republican.
Many men also are against rape as well.
Why would any sane, woman respecting man vote (R) either?
This is surprisingly common.
The Republican House committee on contraception couldn't find ANYONE to explain why access to contraception was needed by any woman who wasn't a tramp.
No one. Not a soul was ready to defend the cause. Crickets.
Rick Scott was equally thorough in his quest for diverse opinions, I'm confident.
Mmmmm. Bubbles are so warm and cozy.
Without being too crass about it, when I think of the Republican Party's approach to women's issues, I am often left thinking that rape is an appropriate metaphor.
Who does that?
Why has no one asked white-collar criminal Rick Scott to make it clear to them as to why there is a pressing need for him to stuff his bank account with taxpayer funds?

THIS is who they are.
THIS is who they've always been.
So let me get this straight...in Florida:
If you happen to become pregnant, why, -the Lord works in Mysterious Ways!
And, no, you can't have any pre natal care, pre school, day care, WICS, or welfare, while you raise YOUR child as a Single Mom.
However, when he turns 18, he does become eligible to enter one of those Private Prisons. . .
And the war continues, I'm speechless! These people are an anathema to thinking, rational, moral people of good conscious! Wow....
Suppose he should of just sent back the already-agreed upon fund with a "Not in my office!" and "How has your marriage been?" Because lord know us women-folk only use rape as an excuse for like everything, for sure. Like wounded vets using PTSD as an excuse to get medical care. Pfft. Gawds, we are sooooooooo scamming you guys!
New Slogan: Vote GOP: the Pro-Rape Party.
"Awareness" is not a word you normally think of when you think of Rick Scott.
PEOPLE POWER PRICE CONTROL
Posted on April 15, 2012 by jcarroll
You can help bring down the price of gasoline with out any effort if we stand together. A barrel of oil is 42 gallon, but only about 25 % is made into gasoline. There are hundreds of products made from oil. The oil corporations get more per gallon for some products than a barrel of oil cost. They don’t have to change prices of gasoline every day, no matter what OPEC does. Just an excuse to rip you off and mess up the economy. The oil corporations are to blame for high gasoline prices. These collectives monopolies fix prices which is a violation of the law. A collective monopoly is one in which 10 or fewer corporations control over 90 % of a good or service in one industry.
You can help with little or no effort by buying your gasoline across the street or down the road-just pass up Exxon-Mobil. We can bloody this giants’ nose ; the rest will get the message. Target the giant.
Help build a People Power Price Control organization. We don’t have to take it. Send five dollar to People Power Price Control 2201 Southern Shade Blvd. Knoxville Tennessee 37932. Every penny will be used to get the message out. Send this message out by any means possible. You can help control prices of these collective monopolies. There are three we can easily target: big oil, big supermarkets, and big banks. They are the three ripping us off with a price marker and calling it inflation which is an euphemism for theft. Ask your friends to visit the Internet Free Press and send the message to your friends and family and the News Media.
Small businesses have to compete; the collective monopolies fix prices on top of the bridge. They don’t even have to get under the bridge. Next day gasoline prices are post on the internet every day for the next day price changes. They all change in lock-step. Send this article out to as many people as you can, and ask them to visit the Internet Free Press for the targets of People Power Price Control.
Voldemort strikes again.
I am going to try to be nice here. It seems that only recently, Maddowites are blind to Florida unless the issue involves the Holy Vagina. Yes, yes, yes, by all means yes, this thing he has done TO WOMEN sucks! Don't you people understand? A stolen vote - Dominion voting machines, specifically in Hillsborough County - installed him. Now, he has installed a former republican lobbyist as his sec. of state. That's check, and mate, people. He now controls all elections. Today it was announced he is personally going to "rate" the supervisors of elections!!! Do you people understand what a coup d'tat looks like, or, must a story have a vagina in it before you see how dangerous this man is? Every horrendous legislative atrocity is now available to him, including those aimed at women. And, as soon as the 2012 election is over, he will begin legislatively fornicating all of us with abandon. Furthermore, our state - not Michigan, not Wisconsin - controls a close presidential race outcome through 29 electoral votes. Wake the F up! The vagina is only the first thing to be attacked! HELP US!!
