On the subject of last night's Best New Thing, Andy Dallos shared the above picture he took from an airplane window on Sunday and Bill remarked that we don't often see 1WTC from the sky like that where the height is so pronounced. Usually we see pictures from the ground, where the perspective makes it hard to distinguish the height of 1WTC from the surrounding buildings.
You may recall, the Twin Towers were visible from all over the city and were always a good way to orient yourself, for example when coming out of the subway. This new tower already has a similar prominence. At the end of that new cool time lapse video from the EarthCam people, below, they pull out to a wide shot that shows the height well.

This "replacement" is far less than the eye can see. We should have rebuilt the twin towers, one story higher than it was and put guns on it!
I woulda gone with SAM batteries, myself.
hoo-ray for New York!
Now, how 'bout some photos of the city formerly known as Detroit? (Just for balance, of course. . .)
Yeah, I was going to ask if Manhattan had its own air force now and whether or not there was a SAM Turret on the rooftop planned?
nice, but do they have anyone to occupy all of that space?
I think it is time for another Rachel Geek Trip down there. It has been quite awhile and it is obvious stuff has happened.
Nice shot (that top one). Did you take it? Out for a little chopper ride?
You can also get a good view of the tower from the roadway immediately after you exit the Lincoln Tunnel. The roadway is elevated, so you get a good perspective on the relative heights of all of the buildings in the skyline. I recommend checking it out at dusk from the passenger's seat of a car.
