As part of covering Arizona's anti-immigration politics, we've reported on former Republican State Senator Russell Pearce and his sometime friend, Neo-Nazi J.T. Ready. Now police in Arizona say Ready shot and killed four people in his extended family yesterday, and then killed himself.
No one has covered the story of the relationship between Senator Pearce and border vigilante Ready more closely than Stephen Lemon of the Phoenix New Times. Lemons' post today offers a terrific history, going back years. It's also a reminder that sometimes a scary extremist is not just goofy and strange. Sometimes, he really is scary. Lemons writes of Ready:
He could play the clown, but always menacingly. . . .
As Ready was a creative, inveterate liar, it was difficult to tear fantasy from reality when speaking with him. He once told me, on background, that he was half-Jewish on his mother's side. With a straight face, I might add. Needless to say, he could be very convincing.
He always prided himself on once being a Marine, though in reality he had been drummed out of the service after getting court-martialed twice. He was intelligent and wily, and I was always on my guard around him.
The photo above is from a New Times account of Ready's U.S. Border Guard on patrol; Ready is the one on the left. The photo after the jump is screengrabbed today from the Border Guard's website.

Arizona has left reality. Latest: Guns & Ammo Magazine editor arrested for second degree murder in Arizona yesterday:

Wow - we're truly in Wild West mode again.
Frankly they all scare me. Mainly because I really believe that none of them are playing with a full deck. It's people like this whose fears have been manipulated for years in regard to "other" - they are scarey because "reality" really no longer gets thru to them. Sorry he took his family with him, but he should be an example of how far fear has taken these people.
Any mainstream poliltico who entertained access for Mr. Ready, hobnobbed with him, and helped him along the way owe us an unabashed, unmitigated, uncategorical apology for their complete lack of discernment regarding the horrible intentions of those they choose to keep around them.
If indeed Mr. Ready was involved in Republican politics, was endorsed by other Republicans as he ran for public office, and had access to the Arizona State Republican party leaders, now that he has engaged in reprehensible murder of other human beings and is dead, they need to come forward and fess up to their utter lack of judgement for giving such a menace any kind of credence when an open and honest vetting would have resulted in keeping him from doing harm to others under their sanction! -Kevo

I guess all the big media outlets will be hounding Romney about him rejecting and repudiating the endorsement of Russell Pearce, who likes to pal around with mass murderers...
I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your severs!
Arizona has left reality.
Arizona is scary.
and...
Kansas
Missouri
Arkansas
Tejas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Georgia
Florida
South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia
Ohio
Michigan
West Virginia
Kentucky
Northern Kentucky (formerly known as Indiana - now working toward becoming the Mississippi of the Midwest)
We have become a seriously wacked out country, due in large part to 3+ decades of republicans having nothing to sell but fear.
Add Pennsylvania, vet.
Berks County is home to a Klavern, who meet and parade openly.
According to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, Berks County consistently ranks in the top five counties in the state for the number of bias and tension incidents reported. Organized hate groups active in Berks County in the last two decades include the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, National Socialist Movement, and National Alliance. Some of the communities targeted through recruitment and leafleting are Reading, Fleetwood, Boyertown, Exeter Township, and Lower Alsace Township.
I've just gotta say (not to support this guy... and for the record I was Honorably Discharged) that "being drummed out" of the Marine Corps or even having been dishonorably discharged (Like Walt Disney) doesn't make you "No longer a Marine". In fact, you cannot become "Not a Marine" once you "Are a Marine". Which is why we say "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" and "There are no Ex-Marines". Remember that Lee Oswald is still a Marine. Marines don't disown other Marines, even if they're crazy.
I've known guys like him, and they're all scary as hell. Some of them were likewise connected to politicians in the area, both state and national. "Always on your guard around [them]" is right.
These scary guys mainly show off to each other. When they leave their little world they do not get very far. This applies to some gun nut who actually tries to "defend his freedom" from law enforcement and winds up dead real quick to top Republican officials who pose as "tough on crime" by waving their stupid guns like Jeb Bush signing Florida's "stand your ground" law that looks real patriotic to gun nut blockheads but earns Florida derision and contempt in the Treyvon Martin shooting.
Fascists by definition believe their own militarist bluster but when faced with reality they are mopped up real quick. That is why, when Republicans act out their coup "to take the country back" from the "secular humanist liberals" and return it to the hereditary aristocracy "whose rights come from God" they will fail miserably.
Hard evidence of right-wing failure is the failure of the Soviet coup. When Gorbachev was vacationing a group of hardliners tried to seize power but were overthrown and the country broke up. I believe the same thing will happen here. A group of Republicans will try to seize power to "save the country" from "entitlement-loving government-dependent liberals" who want to "confiscate wealth from job creators". They believe they will be welcomed as heroes by the American people who, they believe, are like themselves and lust to throw themselves at the feet of the rich because that is all they know. But they will be cleaned up real quick and the country will break apart and we will be better off for it.
Read "Republicans with nothing to fear" from incompetent Democrats and an ignorant public. That is why I am pessimistic. Republicans are choking on their lies right now but they will be back. But ultimately I am optimistic because I believe we will all be better off after the county breaks up. The US is too big to govern. We would benefit from smaller and more responsive government. Blue states will be richer without having to pay red state bills and red states can pursue their fascist agenda without bothering the rest of us.
I have had a similar vision, I just wonder what it will take for it to happen. We lost the most casualties of any war/conflict in the Civil War.
http://www.idiotica.com/cranium/encyclopedia/content/civilwar.htm
I do have to wonder, when having such drastically opposing views how long can this last and if it is better or worse to allow a division without bloodshed.
I predict a Republican fascist coup, not a civil war. Those who support the Republican fascist cause will be rounded up real quick. They are only a bunch of nutters who believe their own lies. Anyone who believes he can "defend his liberty" against the US armed forces with a pistol won't last very long. Millions of Americans believe they can defend their liberty with a gun but let them try, they will collapse in a bloody heap. And good riddance.
In the last civil war the South seceded from the North. In the next the East and West will secede from the South. Also, each of the new nations will have the population and industry and agriculture and etc. to become a rich and independent nation.
That's what I was wondering, where the lines will be… they will need to get in the Constitution to make treaties, tariffs and trade agreements with the seceded regions. I know Arizona, New Mexico, California used to be Mexico, Louisiana Purchase was made, etc.
I guess being in California, I will still be in the same country as Oregon, Washington and Hawaii :D
Wow, now what rank is dead murderer again?! I guess I have to go back to the dead murderer's blog again, shucks..
"JT Ready is the one on the left"? (Probably not a description he would have cared for)
;-)
I think Swamp Thing is the one on the right...
Ready and willing "self-deportation"? If they take themselves out would a little push help?
another part of the Russell Pearce saga is that the brilliant AZ legislature is passing a bill that will reimburse Pearce for the costs incurred from his recall election which he lost.....around $250,000. Get me out of this state!!!!!
Unfortunately in recent years these folks have become bold and insist on talking. So they are fixing it so they can't talk anymore? Okay. I was hoping they would just shut up and certainly allow everyone else to live their lives in peace. Unfortunately Arizona does not have good luck at getting good press because of this mess. Now that we know who and what we have here it's time to clean house.
How come this segment, the A block, has been pulled from the website?
