A youth stands in the gates at the U.S.-Mexico border awaiting his deportation at the port of entry in Tijuana.
The Republican National Committee hosted a teleconference call with reporters earlier, and clearly the big news from the discussion was the Republicans' Hispanic Outreach Director, Bettina Inclan, saying that Mitt Romney is "still deciding what his position on immigration is."
I think it was meant to be some kind of complement.
But there was something else in the same teleconference that struck me as interesting.
[Inclan] did slam Obama on immigration, saying Latinos were "incredibly disappointed" with his immigration policy and his failure to persuade Congress to enact immigration reform.
"He talked about uniting families and all he's done is deport more immigrants than any president in American history," she said. "It's another example of how he's failed the Hispanic community."
So, let me get this straight. According to the Republican National Committee, President Obama, that wild-eyed, amnesty-loving radical liberal, is deporting too many immigrants who entered the country illegally. This isn't an argument from a progressive Democrat; it's the argument being pushed by the RNC -- which is supposed to support increased deportations.
In other words, the Republican Party, at the national level, is supporting Mitt Romney, who opposes the DREAM Act and backs a cruel "self-deportation" agenda, and at the exact same time, the Republican Party is arguing that Obama is too far to the right on deportations.
Has the RNC simply given up altogether on being coherent?
The larger pattern, meanwhile, shows that Republicans have a habit of criticizing the president for agreeing with Republicans.
We saw this a couple of weeks ago, for example, when the Romney campaign complained about Obama imposing tough new sanctions on Iran, which Republicans agree with.
Similar, about a month ago, the Romney campaign complained bitterly about Obama approving a free-trade agreement with Colombia -- which Romney also supported.
Similarly, Karl Rove's attack operation, American Crossroads, recently launched attack ads in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, slamming Obama for not doing enough for the coal industry. In reality, not only has the president invested heavily in "clean coal technology," but coal production is up over the last three years, employment in the coal-mining industry is the highest it's been since 1997, and U.S. coal exports have soared, reaching levels unseen in decades.
American Crossroads is bashing Obama for doing what the right hoped he'd do. It's not identical to the "I'm rubber, you're glue" tactic Romney is so fond of, but it's certainly close.
Given all that Democrats and Republicans have to fight about, isn't it odd that Republicans keep complaining about Obama agreeing with Republicans?

To be fair to the rethugs (I know, why?), I'm sure what they MEAN to say is "If you are voting for someone acting like a Republican, why not just vote for a 'real' one?" But they are just too inept to make the message clear.
You hit the nail on the head Rachel, I have to call Romneys ability to tell a factual lie about his position on the auto bailout being for it all along the boldest face lie ever told by a politician, particularly because he would like to take "A LOT OF CREDIT" for that. Isn't it enough to just take credit. Ive been inspired by Romney to record for him a Romney Campaign Anthem complete with a Music Video: Talk That Talk. Check it Out Here:http://www.youtube.com/user/Insidejokeguys
The T.E.A Party Republicans have a backward problem. Oh, not only that they yearn to go backward to the failed policies of the Bush presidency. No, they get everything backwards. The original tea party patriots protested AGAINST taxation without representation. Today's Taxed Enough Already T.E.A. Party Republicans are FOR representation without taxation. Backwards. Take freedom of religion, the framers of the Constitution meant that any religion could be exercised freely, Today's backward republicans say freedom of religion means freedom for us and only for us, certainly not for Muslims or Buddhists or Mormons, because they are not true religions. Only ours is the TRUE religion. Backwards! Take gun rights or as they are are lovingly called, 2nd Amendment Rights. The second amendment says, "a well-regulated militia" in other words, King George or anyone else who would attack our country would not find an unarmed populace. Today's Republicans and even the Roberts - Scalia Supreme Court have permitted the 2nd Amendment to mean that you can be armed and stand your ground in the middle of Tampa during the Republican National Convention. Backwards! I guess they figure that all those with concealed weapons in Tampa form a militia because they have been given permission to carry those concealed weapons in a great "stand your ground" state. Backwards! I am sure there are a multitude of examples where the Republicans are BACKWARDS!!! These are just a few.
You missed the other comment about Obama's failure to persuade Congress on immigration reform.
I seem to remember another President who had that problem. I can't remember his name though. I think the last name started with a Bush and he was a Republican.
"Has the RNC simply given up altogether on being coherent?"
Well, they do say that the presidential nominee provides the direction for the party...
My favorite bit is the idea that his having "failed to persuade" Republicans to pass something they've fought tooth and nail against is put forth as an argument for Latinos to vote against Obama and for Romney. Do they actually think Latinos are that stupid, or is this just another one of those efforts to convince non-racist white voters that they're not racist, so it's okay to be a Republican?
Republicans think that, for their electoral purposes, *enough* people are stupid . Guess what? They're right.
"Has the RNC simply given up altogether on being coherent?"
C'mon? Seriously? Everybody KNOWS this is by design. Rmoney takes every side of every issue and everybody gets to pick just which Rmoney they absolutely adore. And when a Democrat takes Rmoney to task for a particular stance on any issue, all they have to do is claim they take the opposite. Since everybody's so confused, nobody knows what to think and it's a wash.
Just muddy the water with confusion and doubt. Just like the climate deniers. And most people have no clue what's going on.
Again, "1984," but this time it's for corporate authoritarians.
"Given all that Democrats and Republicans have to fight about, isn't it odd that Republicans keep complaining about Obama agreeing with Republicans?"
No, it's not odd. It's just non-stop attack and the drip, drip, drip effect. How many people, when they're listening to an attack, understand it's an attack on something the attacker supported very recently. The Republicans aren't telling that, so most of them have no clue. Attack, attack, attack. Drip, drip, drip.
And it'll work.
More Retardicon double-speak.. These people should simply be put in a bag and thrown into a river. Sorry all you PC lefties but, now more than ever, it needs to be said.
Eliminating the competition is a republican tactic. I would rather win on the issues.
A newer, more advanced form of Tourette's showing up in GOP? Just spewing out random curses and accusations, without regard to their own statements?
No offense meant to Tourette's sufferers.
I think the double speak is kind of creepy. Anyone read, "In the Garden of Beasts"?
Republicans have no sense of direction other than renewing Bush policies and slamming the President. The only thing they're good at is planting the seed of doubt into the brain of voters who do'nt have a clue about what's actually going on,like the one's that watch Foxsnooze.Or should I say lame brain voters. I would be willing to bet $10,000 that the woman who asked the question at the Romney rally about Pres.Obama being tried for treason was either paid,or was a member of Romney's campaign team.Quite a coincidence she happened to be black,do'nt you think? He knew the question was going to be asked, thats why he did'nt respond.Like I said, planting the seed of doubt, just like the birthers and the one's who say he is a secret Muslim. Romney may even try to convince Latino's that he himself is part Mexican because his father came here from Mexico after his grandfather ran out on this country.
Welcome to the GOP where we will say anything to get elected. After we do away with these pesky voting rights we will stop all this lying and just screw everybody.
Not knowing how most other Americans feel, but we all are furious with the financial yoke around our neck of a near 16 Trillion dollar U.S. deficit, which illustrates our grandchildren, will be still paying of this debt for decades to come. Then according to a recent study by the Heritage Foundation another Comprehensive Immigration Reform package, better known as AMNESTY, would cost taxpayers an estimated $2.6 Trillion dollars to process and complete. Another giant price tag we cannot accept. Currently the 50 states have unfunded mandates of supporting foreign nationals of $113 billion dollars annually and counting. Illegal immigrants now make up about 4 percent of the U.S. population, meaning that about one in twenty-five persons currently in the U.S. are here unlawfully. Illegal immigrants make up nearly one-third of the foreign-born population in the U.S. Learn more at NumbersUSA web site.
