Yesterday, former President George W. Bush delivered a four-word endorsement -- "I'm for Mitt Romney" -- as an elevator closed on him. Today, the Romney campaign said Bush's support was "welcome," though it was tough to tell.
The presumptive 2012 GOP nominee delivered a speech in Florida that referred to President Obama's "predecessor" five times, without actually saying the man's name. If Bush's support is "welcome," why can't Romney bring himself to say his name out loud?
It makes the larger questions -- How would Romney's agenda differ from Bush's? Does Romney consider the Bush presidency a success? -- that much more important.
Incidentally, my friend Kombiz Lavasany asked a good question this afternoon: "Did Romney send a release on the Christine O'Donnell endorsement and not the George W Bush endorsement?"
Oddly enough, yes. After the former Senate candidate in Delaware threw her support to Romney, the Republican campaign sent out a boastful press statement.
And after George W. Bush's declaration yesterday, well, this largely helps capture the response from Team Romney, which has not issued a press release on the subject.
Update: The Associated Press reported today, "Romney's aides won't speak for the record about the campaign's plans — if there are any -- for Bush."

While I acknowledge that obtuse is one of my middle names, I do not get the connection to the tumbleweeds.
A desolate silence represented by the tumbleweeds?
Maybe it's the passing resemblance to a Shrub? (I still miss Molly Ivins)
;-)
Tumbleweed is a dead bush.
It's all about the *spinding*... I spoke to the dad of a "sharp biz consultant" who is seen on CNN and FoxNoise, and supposedly the mantra being used by the right is based on (what I term a lie) this: the President must be defeated because of all his spending.
Funny, haven't there been any Congressional votes on approp bills. I know we have to ignore the '09 stimulus, which was one shot and done?
Next time, ask him what specific spending measures Obama has enacted to cause a trillion-dollar deficit this year.
When they have nothing they make stuff up that sounds horrid and treat Obama like a space alien and refer to him as just a community organizer (trouble maker). But by all the evidence before us, we could use an organizer to restore some semblance of community. Ah, but he is Kenyan or Kenesian or something and has big ears!
The better to hear you with. Wolves are one of the smartest animals to walk the earth and contrary to belief they do not eat Grammas they do kiss them though.
I would like to see an economic round table with GWB, Mitt and Bernie Madoff. They can discuss ethics as well.
Can we get someone to photoshop a lightening bolt scar on Mitt's forehead? (massive tax cuts..ouch!...unpaid for wars..ouch!..etc...)
I think the numbers 666 would be more fitting. I forgot that was reserved for Bush. Thank God, we are evolving and it is now 777. I can't wait for the movie about Disney. He was an intellegient man who made a name for himself conjuring up stories that had everything to do with History and the Bible. I bet him and Shakespeare are having some incredible conversations, Both men were ahead of their times or were they. There is a time and a season for everything, I really believe we must grasp this opportunity and fly with it. Shakespeare was a great Historian who wrote a great Book probably dated around the year 1616. He was a seeker who relished in gathering information and history. Sometimes his message was lost in translation so thank God there are people who know how to interpret the Bible. Some still hold on to the false belief that God was somehow against homosexuals. The New Testament takes care of that. It does however still quote disciples beliefs who apparentally were still not enlightened. Paul I beleive didn't really understand Jesus's teachings and so we have these letters written to the Romans who still don't accept the true teachings of Jesus who may very well have been persecuted for being gay.
Okay, serious question, is it just me or does Mitt Romney remind anyone of Max Headroom from the 80's? Because I think he is so Max it hurts....Max.
Yes! Although he has a different shimmy, he takes a lot of little steps and looks like he's bobbing back and forth like a puppet. It's not very presidential if you ask me.....
He looks more like Scarecrow to me which is so fitting due to the fact that he does scare crows and he is missing a key element needed in order to become a leader of anything. Doing the right thing comes so hard for some people, it is much easier for them to do the wrong thing, give up and revert to the recliner where they resume their role as Archie Bunker.
That endorsement is almost as politically toxic as a career pursuit as Rmoney's VP pick!
@Sad it is like the Crickets Chirping after someone says something they think is great the all you hear are crickets chirping because no one else thinks....(sound of crickets).
And just wow, Rmoney endorsed by a witch!! It must be a Mormon thing!
As I recall, Christine claimed she was NOT a witch... but maybe Bush is?
Witches were doctors. You see where that got them, men would have none of that. So we were mobbed and killed so that men could then take their rightly place as the real Physicians. And it took a pretty long time for women to enter back into the Medical field after that little hoax.
Romney will bring back the Bush years. Bush on steroids, perhaps.
Every position he's taken has been quickly erased by the Borg (Conservative party). He's been stupid enough to answer questions before asking for permission, and ends up doing the flip flop. He doesn't seem to care that he flip flops. (that's even worse than George. George knew to get permission first.)
Therefore: he is doing what he's told. The Conservative party is controlling him now, and it's impossible to know what he stands for.
Bush did as he was told, too, by Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. When Bush was running, I heard loud and clear that he just wanted to be president. That was it. Win, and let the adults take control.
I think Mitt will give us another 4 years of the Bush presidency.
Forget for the moment Romney's dilemma regarding Bush, and ask a bigger question of the Democrats -
Why does Dr. King's name go unmentioned so often when his whole life was spent talking and walking the tenets of healthy liberalism, and battling those forces that would sully a free and liberty-minded people whose content of character matters most to a healthy democracy?
Dr. King's efforts to integrate our society should serve as the foundation to Democratic politics, yet, it seems the Democratic party can't find its way back to the place where it can set the national debate, instead of merely chasing the Republicans through their agendized territory! -Kevo
"It was just as I had foreseen it."--possible quote from that George who can and often does get named--Orwell. Ya gotta admit it's getting very Orwellian out there.
...GWB with his closing-elevator-doors endorsement...
Re-elect President Obama & Vice President Biden with a DEMOCRAT SUPERMAJORITY so Reagan's Trickle Down Economics cesspool gets mopped-up completely. Look into Prescott Bush's dealings with Adolf Hitler for a better understanding of some roots of the RepubliKKKans' repulsion towards people who aren't straight, rich, white or Christian --OR an ignoramus supporter of them.
Take care and hang in there, everyone.

Rachel I think I know what Steve Schmidt is hoping...took me a while to think on it...about Bush's legacy and history viewing him in a more favorable light. Of course, you may have already had him elaborate for you, but for those reading this here goes:
It's part of the whole Republican Neocon concept of "innoculating" the middle east with "democracy". That was one of the mostly unstated reasons for invading Iraq. Of course, it wasn't Bush's idea, but Cheney's, but I have heard this from those "in the know".
So perhaps Steve is anticipating that in time this American-centric strategy will actually work, perhaps the Arab Spring will be credited to that policy...who can say. But perhaps that is what he is banking on.
I will just return to the Front Page please
