A week ago today, Mississippi Republican State Representative Bubba Carpenter addressed his local GOP chapter, in Alcorn County, and told them how proud he was of a new law that "literally stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi." Carpenter said critics of the law predicted the return of coat hanger abortions. "But hey," he said, "you have to have moral values. You have to start somewhere, and that’s what we've decided to do."
Tape sleuth James Carter found that clip on the Alcorn County GOP channel, nipped it down to the relevant part, added some tags so people interested in the issue could find it, and put it on his own channel. We blogged that here on Monday, and then it got picked up in a whole lot of places.
Last night James wrote to say that the Alcorn County GOP had lodged a copyright complaint with YouTube. Today, his clip has gone dark. You can still get the original on the Alcorn County GOP's channel, but hey, they disabled embedding of it. And hey, that makes it much harder for bloggers to blog it, because you can't play the clip in your post. Carpenter told the hometown crowd that he was "proud" of the new law, so why wouldn't his party want you to see the trophy ceremony?
For now, we'll just have to run the transcript of Representative Carpenter's remarks, so you can read them:
"We have literally stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi. Three blocks from the Capitol sits the only abortion clinic in the state of Mississippi. A bill was drafted. It said, if you would perform an abortion in the state of Mississippi, you must be a certified OB/GYN and you must have admitting privileges to a hospital. Anybody here in the medical field knows how hard it is to get admitting privileges to a hospital...
"It's going to be challenged, of course, in the Supreme Court and all -- but literally, we stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi, legally, without having to-- Roe vs. Wade. So we've done that. I was proud of it. The governor signed it into law. And of course, there you have the other side. They're like, 'Well, the poor pitiful women that can't afford to go out of state are just going to start doing them at home with a coat hanger.' That's what we've heard over and over and over.
"But hey, you have to have moral values. You have to start somewhere, and that’s what we've decided to do. This became law and the governor signed it, and I think for one time, we were first in the nation in the state of Mississippi."
While you're over there on the Alcorn County GOP channel, check out the promo for their convention. It's fun, and unlike the coat hanger clip, it's still embeddable.

Boy Howdy, Laura. That is our State. And she is so lovely in so many, many ways. From Faulkner to Grisham (Who served in the House) to the most beautiful home ever built, Beauvoir. Makes me so very sad. *weeps*
Commenting on this story I might be arrested under the NDAA an sent to Gitmo or worst Mississippi so I will simply say "No Comment"
Streisand effect, anyone?
Youtube is not the only site.
Just saying.
Install Realplayer, yank the video.
This is 2012 the last time I checked.
Are you stuck on stupid?
What is the deal?
Install RealPlayer? What do you think this is this, 1998?
"But hey, you have to have moral values..." Apparently, they have forgotten the most important value Christ taught. The one he regularly chastised the Pharisees for over their legalism: Compassion.
As Christ would have said: Self-righteous fools.
Don't you mean Self-righteous tools? :D
And possibly ghouls ? :D
So proud of themselves for reversing course on 50 years of progress. So @!$%#ing proud to know that the poor women will have to use coat hangars. So detestable saying that the doctors fly in from birmingham in masks. You know why they wear masks? Because hicks like this representative breed hatred and violence against people, using their backwards religion as a Justification. DISGUSTING INBRED @!$%#S.
Southerners always seem offended when you point to their backward thinking and yet these are the people leading the nation in: the highest rates of illiteracy, teen births, lowest scores on standardized testing, poorest services to women & the poor, etc., but they have their bibles to thump on.
Lord, please save us all from the ignorance of the followers of "Christ"........Amen
Stop with all the truth and facts, it is making the concocted image that they want to portray fall apart.
Darn, I keep letting those pesky things like: facts, truth, reason and common sense over-take me......
They also disabled the video on mobile devices.
"We've heard that women are going to do it at home with a coat hanger, and we've taken that concern to heart. But ultimately, we decided that we really just don't give a @!$%#."
It seems they've now realized, after this news story has embedded in the public consciousness, that it is completely unsupportable.
Now they are trying to end it's existence before it grows too large.
But they were somehow unable to get access to someone knowledgeable enough to get rid of this new story quietly and without mess.
Irony
You are sort of saying that they are trying to "abort" this news story. Ironic.
Put a clinic on a ship more than 3 miles offshore and Mississippi can't do anything about it.
Michael, they will make a law calling it a terrorist act against a US citizen and throw you in Prison. DO NOT THINK that these "people" are above just throwing people in jail for their lord and savior. These @!$%#ers are well and truly INSANE.
Apparently Bubba Gump doesn't understand that the job of government does not include invading peoples consciences nor their bedrooms nor their doctors offices. What a complete waste of DNA.
Suppressing the video by the R's..why? They should run in that in the R Pac ads everywhere.
Phil Ochs has something to say about this:

Mississippi: Find yourself another country to be part of!
I thought these Tea Party Right Wing whack jobs wanted less or limited government, this is obviously not the case when a woman has a pregnancy that is compromising to her health they think that they have the right to legislate these draconian laws. No one leaves their house and wants to have an abortion. Abortion is a sensitive issue that should not be kicked around like a political football. The fact that they cut down or removed the video with Bubba Carpenter saying we have officially ended abortion in Mississippi and saying if the coat-hanger abortions return this is okay is just showing that they are liars and what they are doing is just damage control because they realize that when it comes down to reality people don't want religious zealots making decisions for them. The voters of the state of Mississippi last year voted down a bill stating that fertilized human egg is a living human being. This is really creating jobs for the unemployed this is what the Republicans intent was when they were sworn into office in January of 2011.
ugh my state for those of us who fought on the ground against 1390 we are disgusted I am one of the ones who has been on the news and in the halls of the capitol warning about the return of coat hanger abortions. What you don't know is the chair of the senate committee that 1390 had to pass though said he was passing it it to stop coat hanger abortions inferring that the only clinic in the state performs "coat hanger' abortions or botched abortions. There is no limit to the misinformation they will put out.
Laurie Bertram Roberts President MS Chapter NOW
Laurie, I live in this state, too. We are simply outnumbered by willfully-ignorant people...I expect no less from the GOP, and it is easy to misinform and misrepresent facts in Mississippi...I applaud your courage and presence of mind...I can't give the Democrats a pass on this one either, but now that the Republicans have taken control politically, this is mostly their "baby"....
Mississippi isn't for humans...Shame on them and their little minds, too..
Mississippi is the the first in stupid.
he bragged that Mississippi is finally FIRST in something! Too bad it's not education or obesity education, or general health care of its citizens or jobs creation. Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the nation. what a shame this has to be their FIRST claim to fame.
Fortunately, the GOP is not tech savvy enough to know that there are ways to download a YouTube video, and places to upload it ... anonymously.
The convention promo video is gone now.
Here's an embeddable clip:

What is more outrageous is that they are not the only state to come into your bedroom, come between you and your Doctor, and cram their beliefs and values up your *!#. They do not understand this country is NOT a "Christian Nation", it is a Freedom of Religion country, hence separation of Church and State. They need to be driven out of office when they stop listening to the voice of the majority. Repulicans want control whether they are the majority or the minority. They have been obstructive and destructive from day one of Obama's election. Take their power away in your state government as well as Nationally. Look at the havoc they have wrecked since they took control in 2010 in the House and in State Governments. They promised jobs, but once elected have pursued nothing but a social agenda. Make your votes count!
