Tonight's guests:
- Judith Browne-Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, sued Florida over voting rights violations
- Congressman Bruce Braley, Democrat of Iowa
And here's executive producer Bill Wolff with a look ahead at what's to be covered (with accompaniment by recent Medal of Freedom honoree, Bob Dylan):

Rachel, your comments tonight (and air-time spent) about the State of Florida questioning the validity of 2,600 voters' rights to vote are a waste of your viewers' time. First, 2,600 is a very, very, very small fraction of Florida's millions of voters as the 4th most populated state. Second, doesn't everybody, Democrat or Republican, want to get rid of illegal voters?....most of these identified are likely dead. I, for one, approve of deleting illegal voters from the rolls. Please have a follow-up story on your program as to how many of the 2,600 suspect voters were validated as legal voters.
never happen.....rachel doesn't want to make the right right......she is looking to destroy the right. so no chance her investigating this....good luck with this one.
Mike from Georgia,
To clarify: there are actually more than 180,000 names on the purge list, the vast majority of whom, I assure you, are not dead. I think you must have misread the fact that so far, 2,600 of them have received letters asking them to prove their citizenship.
The controversy surrounding the issue is not that non-citizens should be able to vote, but that the purge list is derived from an outdated and enormously error-ridden driver's license database: many of those people are in fact citizens. Once people receive a letter saying their citizenship is in question, they have 30 days to schedule a court appointment and provide documents proving their citizenship. Many people will not do that, and will thereby be automatically removed from the voter rolls and denied their constitutional right to vote. Some might say--myself included--that the whole thing might be an effort to suppress a group that overwhelmingly votes blue in a state that could very well determine the outcome of this year's election.
Perhaps you also saw on last night's program that a similar ploy was used in Florida in the year 2000, when non-felons were denied the right to vote on the basis of felonies they didn't commit. If you recall, in that same year, Florida decided the presidential election by a mere 537 votes: less than one fourth the number you deemed insignificant, and one three-hundred-and-thirty-fifth the number of people actually on this year's list.
So, far from being a waste of time, this issue, if ignored, might determine this country's future, and thereby the future of this world... not to be all butterfly-effecty about it. But really.

P.S. The last I heard was that of the 1,637 flagged as non-citizens in Miami-Dade county alone, at least 359 have proven their citizenship, and another 26 had been identified as citizens.
That's not such a good grade.

Hello Mike, I am a retired military man who watches Rachel, and all of the show on MSNBC, guess Mike you did not watch Rachel Friday show about what Vice President Biden said in his speak. it was truely heart felt, most people have little or no idea what family member goes through when their love ones shipout for six to ten months or more, everytime wondering if they will see them alive again. I also watched the President Obama speak on Memorial Day and yes he was right on, if you did not grow up during the time of the Vietnam War you dont understand the feelings of the troops that can home back then, it took over 15 years and another war (The First Gulf War) to help erase all those bad feelings of the troop and the military in general.
here is why I watch MSNBC, they are more fair and balanced then FOX News, they let the other side have a voice on their network then FOX does.
Yes, we need voter ID law especially in key swing states like Florida. There's just too much fraud and too much is at stake. Only AMERICAN CITIZENS SHOULD VOTE, that's the law. Legal and illegal immigrants should be kept out at all cost.
I think maybe there should be an addition to the constitution that states you have to be in the military for three years, or you have to be an actor for three years, or humm maybe you should have to be of service to your comunity, (how about that )Who cares about a businessman who cares about no one. The only people who are for Romney are just against Obama. How sad for our country.
carolyn your stupid. obozo doesn't care about you.....get up and go to work....it will help you.
Carolyn, I was thinking more along the lines of an accredited public university Constitutional Law course requirement.
Q: Why Romney is pushing birtherism?
A: Distract people from good news about economy. People must not hear about jobs created in May lower gas prices etc. noise, noise noise and confusion about whats important.
17 trillion dollars can you imagine that......and it keeps going up.....all for you and your kids and their kids and their kids....but you won't be around to tell them you @!$%#ed them over......with this lying traitor of a son of a bitch.....and I mean that literally....
How do I flag you?
Judy, click on the exclamation point next to the arrow that points up then click on a reason.
thank you, Caregiver.
Mona, that debt you keep trying to pin on the President was run up by President Bush for the two wars, fuel, food, guns, ships, aircraft and yes people all need money to fight those wars, those cost were never figured up when the war started, there is one final cost that never gets added in under after the war is over that cost is in lives and medical cost for those who did come back, maybe with or without their arms and legs, those cost will be with this country for the rest of their lives and our lives.
Birtherism is part of the Republican strategy because Barack Obama's BC has more questions than answers. About the economy, 8.2% is not good enough, Obama promise us 7.2%. 6T in added debt, $4.00 gas prices; totally unacceptable. We are becoming a 3rd world nation, we need Mitt Romney to bring back prosperity, prominence and American exceptionalism back to this country.
Apparently, Florida's DMV database bites, or Florida election officials are incompetent procrastinators, or...
Cindy, I'd show you my birth certificate, but it wouldn't matter. So if some jackass tries to pull the stunt of taking my voting rights away, I'll show them my God-given US birthright IN PERSON. Because, I remember what the American Revolution was about.
locknpost, I don't think it's either one. I think it has more to do with Ken Detzner, FL's Secretary of State.

Caregiver, thank you for the links. It is reassuring when we see county officials stand tall, take their duties seriously, and show respect for the position they've been entrusted with.
Rachel, I don't know how to get info to the president except through somebody like you who he probably watches. Anyway, what the president and most people who listen to you don't realize is that there are 20 million people out there watching Fox Affiliates of some kind and shows like Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, etc. etc. THAT ONLY watch and listen to those shows. They don't use the internet, read newspapers, or read or watch anything except Right wing propoganda....day in and day out. My parents actually turned into one of them after 50 years of working for a living. Now, that's all that's on the radio and since the big morph at Fox news in 1994, they have been effectively brainwashed. I've lost my parents at 52 years old and it breaks my heart. President Obama, and whatever super pacs he has, need to buy every single minute of ad time on Fox and on every Fox affiliate nationwide. They don't need to spend a DIME elsewhere or anywhere that compassionate, enlightened people exist. This is the only way he can highlight the real anti-women, anti-democracy, anti-inclusion, and anti-voter rights policies and agendas and laws for God's sake that are moving us to the right whether we like it or not. Obama needs to have one guy watch nothing but Fox for a month and see what happens. It frickin insidious,..and briliiant in a Hitler sort of a way. I'm serious, Rachel. A lot of people have no exposure whatsoever to anything you, Ed, and lawrence report. They NEVER hear it ANYWHERE. They play the victims very well band get away with it because just simply can't and won't fight like they do. It's not in their DNA. The dems will lose everything unless they learn how to fight they way do. Like I said, brilliant. Nobody knows that outside the Fox bubble; and that's 20 million people unless Obama gets his crap together and talks in places the Jim ones followers frequent....................One last thing. Have you noticed every McDonalds, every Doctor's office, every dentist office and every hotel lobby has Fox news on and WONT let you change it....insidious!
they won't change the channel because its the truth stupid. you should listen....but from what you are telling rachel you must be on the take from the government. get off y our lazy ass and go to work.....quit worrying about everyone else. They have the same opportunities you have, obliviously your too lazy to go after them....so quit your whining and go to work......make something of yourself....
Mona, yes I am on the take, since I am a retired military men your taxes are paying my retirement pay, I just did my small part for twenty years to help protect your rights to say whatever you have to say, maybe you should join up the military and help protect the rest of us. by the way when people like Mitt Romney, Dick Cheney and Rush LImbaugh had their chance they choose to stay out of the fight.
Why does NOTHING appear on any of MSNBC's shows that mentions any positives about Obama's re-election campaign and why he should be re-elected? Think about it.
Also, consider Chris Hayes' recent MSNBC on-air comments about Memorial Day and all of the fine young men and women that serve in the U.S. military. Think about it. His views disgusted me to the core.
Why does anyone watch MSNBC?
most smart people don't//////msnbc//////// they lie they think they are making obozo look good and the funny thing is .....he could care less about this channel....he loves them making fun or criticizing the right.....makes him look good NOT
so msnbc is working the wrong angle making obozo look good......thats why people won't watch this idiot channel.....get a clue.
Mona I think you had better go back to school and learn something. one of best friend told me one time that he was going to live some place other then the United States because he said people in these country only reads the front page of the newpaper and never checkout the rest of the story, you are one of those people, by the way my friend was a conservative Republican, and if you do not have enough respect for our President then you can leave to, I served under more Republican President then Democart President and stilled show them the respect the job reguired and deserves.
We saw in 2010 the same thing in Illinois. Karl Rove used Crossroads GPS to help Mark Kirk elected senator. These ads had a subliminal fear of loss message to get people to vote for Mark Kirk instead of the Democratic candidate. Mr. Rove is a devil who wants to have this country run by one party, the Republicans. I'll bet that Mr. Rove had something to do with the ads slamming the Democratic candidate. He is the best because he has NO conscience.
no honey he is trying to protect you and your children......learn listen quit asking for a hand out. work work work and maybe you will get a head.....
Mona, you've got "a head", but evidently it's as empty as a cave.
As to Mike in Georgia, who in the hell sits around worring about illegal voters? Its about people who don't want certain people to vote cause they might vote for "that" guy. Rachel doesn't waste her time. She has the best polital show on TV. So maybe you should watch FOX.
oh you are a dumby......illegal is illegal.....they shouldn't be here stupid. they shouldn't vote. but you can bet your sweet ass....obozo;s group....like rachel will find a way to get to the polls......yeah for democracy. yeah your kids will b e paying for them and paying for them and paying for them......what a legacy you have left them,' your stupid
Mike from Georgia,
Just to clarify: the purge list includes more than 180,000 names, the vast majority of whom, I assure you, are not dead. I believe the 2,600 people you speak of are simply the people who have already received the letters.
To be sure, the controversy surrounding the issue is not centered on the question of whether or not non-citizens should be able to vote, but that the list itself is outdated and absolutely fraught with errors. Those in question must file for an appointment and prove with legitimate documentation that they are citizens. Unless they do so within 30 days, they are automatically denied the right to vote. Some might say--myself included--that this could very well be effort to suppress a group that overwhelmingly votes Democratic, in a state that might very well decide this year's presidential election. After all, if you recall, in the year 2000, Florida decided the presidential election by 537 votes--less than one fourth the number you deemed insignificant, and one three-hundred-and-thirty-fifth the number of people actually on the list. In that same year--perhaps you saw in last night's program--a similar ploy was used, whereby non-felons were denied the right to vote on the basis of crimes they never committed.
So, to be clear: it's actually far from a waste of time.

sounds like obozo got his way......
Wow. At first this didn't post, so I had to rewrite it and post it again. Now I look like a redundant jackass. Thanks, internet.
Yes, Mona. Well said.
To MiKe in Georgia - I bet you vote against your best interests and don't even know it. Chris appologized, Obama thinks we're all intelligent, Democratic senators have no balls, and Roger Ailes is a cancer on the world.
yeah someone with a brain....
So, not you, Mona, if a brain is a requirement.
Rachel, assuming GOP billionaires win all three branches of government at the state and national levels, how will we be able to reverse the damage they can do to political and social policy since they also OWN the supreme court ?
oh brother.....you are so brainwashed......what about all the dem billionaires......opray, all the celebrities.....sport people.....all the dumb people that just go out on stage and do their thing and rack in millions if not billions what about all those people....who when you to a theater have to pay 15 dollars to get in oh boy these are the real hero's....not the billionaires that give people jobs....and are constant in giving them jobs.....you people are stupid and you can't fix stupid....sorry...but we all will save your asses.....so you can complain in the future.....my idea is to ship all of you to a third world country for a year and then bring you back.....then you will see what the right is talking about......work and take responsibility
Your vocabulary, dear Mona, is almost as big a monstrosity as your sentence structure. Inspiring, though your are. You move me to poetry.

Mitt's Plan (Reagan's) propose building a six hundred ship Naval fleet while trying to outfit those ships with sailors giving them a average pay raise of only 3% a year, first you have to start a war with Iran in order to get the draft restarted, by the way "Elites" like himself and his son dont have to fight it. here is the big fallout of that plan you will have all those new ships tied up to the pier without any crew members to sail them out to sea.
also buy all those new F35, 22, 18, 16 and F15's but dont spend any money on educting enough people to help maintain those planes let alone trying to find enough educted people to fly them.
I am a great fan of your work on MSN and Free America Radio, however, today both you and you guest used the word "coincidence" with perhaps different understanding of what the word means, your guest using to perhaps mean something like "accident" or "chance." To hopefully clarify, here is the Merriam-Webster definition, which agrees with every other dictionary I have referenced.
co·in·ci·dence/kōˈinsədəns/
Noun:
Synonyms:
concurrence - accident - chance

I do realize that a majority misuse and misunderstand this word, including Oprah! However, perhaps we can do something to start correcting and educating.

NEWS FLASH: Today, mogul Donald Trump announced the expansion his Birther enterprise. He says he began to realize years ago that a lot of things, in addition to Obama's birth, are open to question.
His business plan includes forthcoming investigations of the existence of Big Foot, whether Danny was actually a boy, and if iPads really have an eye."It is high time that a smart guy like me came along to set the record straight on these things once and for all," said Trump. He added, “It would of course be a fitting follow-up to my highly successful project of last year, when I, after three thousand years of these stupid arguments between the geniuses at Harvard and Chico State, showed that moon spiders are a complete myth.”
Also in the planning stage are investigations of the theory that "those little dots in the sky are stars, instead of big candles," and the claims some people have made about a personality trait of "so-called grandiosity.” Trump noted that he had recently developed "great skepticism" about the existence of such a trait, especially since he has never run into anyone with it.
Mr. Trump concluded his Las Vegas news conference by saying, "as far as I am concerned, the jury is still out on some things, and more investigation is needed. For example--in the animal world-- I have not yet decided how I will stand on grass."
This reporter attempted to ask a question as Mr. Trump was leaving, but he said that he didn’t have time. He did offer some quick words about a “blockbuster report” that he would soon release. The report would show that “cattle occasionally do feel at home on the range, that Johnny Cash would never get near a burning ring of fire, much less fall onto one, and that Superman could not jump tall buildings in a single bound, only buildings and other structures less than four stories, and he needed a running start even for that.”
I'm sitting here wondering how Rachel could write a book like "Drift" and then become a happy on-air cheerleader for yet another US military action against a foreign country that has not attacked us, this time in Syria...
Will the real Rachel Maddow please stand up? -Please stand up? -Please stand up?
fire the unions!!! My GOD, don't you people get it, job performance is always enhanced by a competitive edge, vying to be a top teacher is attainable if you are dispensable. tenor and a job security that is UNREALISTIC, can NOT be imposed! Its a "no matter what you do", you will never be fired mentality that leads teachers to a lackadaisical performance!
There is nothing wrong with proving your worth everyday, its called personal responsibility to become the best you can be!
INDISPENSABLE ! ( I meant) !
People are already being expected to do the jobs of 3+ people, and it's getting worse, while the corporations rake in record profits; when the corporations get to decide what's competitive, the workers lose. You're a fool, and one who knows no labor history to boot.
FIRE THE UNIONS!
An unrealistic approach to job security due to the unions "protection" leads to poor performance. Its only naturl. human behavior. If you thought you could not be punished by lack of effort towards teaching, than you will not give the best you have to give!
Anything in life cannot be handed to you without fear of consequences of your performance!
HAVING THE COMFORT OF KNOWING YOUR ABOVE BEING LET GO, FIRED, REPRIMANDED.
ITS not RIGHT, UNIONS ARE CORRUPT. SILENCING ACCOUNTABILITY IS RIDICULOUS!
Zenstorm, I don't know what firsthand knowledge you have of tenure's supposed effect on teachers. As a 37 - year teacher, now retired, neither my membership in my education associations/unions nor tenure had any effect on my effort, my performance, giving the best I had, the consequences of my performance, my accountability, or my personal worth. Students, parents, administrators, and school board members have always had the power to determine whether I was "becoming the best I could be" or shirking my responsibility. Every day I was observed by 100 to 200 students, other teachers, administrators, and parents as to whether I was giving the best I had to give or simply showing up. I was not perfect, but my students, their parents, and my administrators knew I held myself to the standard that I wanted to treat and teach my students the ways I wanted my own children to be taught. I took advantage of every opportunity to enhance my skills through reading, taking additional courses in my field and to enhance maximum student learning and performance. I sought numerous reliable sources to provide students at + or - 6 grade levels of reading skills within the classroom to enhance my students' skill development. Every class was organized to provide reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking skills instruction, practice, and learning. My students' test scores always rose above the norm.
Having tenure did not affect my performance, nor do I think it affected those I worked with over the years. The union protection provided the academic freedom that supported my performance and presentation of information to students and provided that due process would be applied to any performance brought into question. No teacher wants any negative evaluation in his/her permanent file without a response that presents the situation fairly. I have worked with a very small percentage of teachers - 10% or so, who didn't always live up to my expectations or perform adequately. Many of those left the profession on their own without prodding by poor evaluations or complaints. Some needed administrators to evaluate properly, place the individual on probation, provide opportunities for remediation within a short time frame, and then were dismissed, but within the procedures established to protect an employee from unscrupulous administrative acts of dismissal or retaliation or the students from further poor teacher behavior. Are there abuses that should not be tolerated? Of course, but the unions, whether AFT or NEA are working with districts all over the country to improve the education for all students. Bad teachers don't win supporters among union members. Contrary to what you believe, every teacher knows there are consequences surrounding our performance. Formal and informal observations are part of most negotiated contracts on a quarterly and daily level, with pre and post conferences to discuss that performance from many perspectives. The unions have hardly silenced accountability; they push for it. To do otherwise, puts members in an untenuous and ambiguous position, forever at the whims of a less than scrupulous administration. That's not good for anyone in education - students, teachers, parents, the administration, or the community.
I loved working with my students, helping them grow into skilled adults ready to take their place in the world. I don't think anyone I worked with, staff or students would say I was lackadaisical. If anything, I cared too much, putting in ten hour days at the expense of time some days with my own children. But, I saw the efforts put in by their teachers, and knew that most of them shared my view and tried to teach them as they wanted their children to be taught, as well. Most were experienced teachers like myself, who never stopped learning or trying to become better teachers. The unions we belonged to didn't thwart our efforts; they encouraged them.
