When stuff like this happens, China usually keeps foreigners out until it settles down.

Ms. Maddow again did not tell the whole story about Proposition 29 in CA, the $1 cigarette tax initiative. If you read the initiative you will find nothing about cancer research. You will find the the initiative creates a bureaucracy to administer the money. The Los Angeles Times, a liberal newspaper, opposed the initiative for the same reasons. I do not smoke and would have voted for the proposition if the money would have gone to cancer research. The spending by the Tobacco companies had nothing to do with, it the poor construction of the initiative caused the loss.
I live in California, am anti-cancer and anti-smoking, and I voted NO on Prop. 29. It had nothing to do with the tobacco company money. It had everything to do with California's budget problems. A great deal of our tax money is dedicated money voted on by propositions such as this, money that cannot be spent on anything else, no matter how important the other fiscal needs are. As a result, favored causes and some expenses that could easily be deferred receive adequate funding while the general fund has too little money and very little wiggle room, and any spending cuts that are made must be made to essential services. Some of us are fed up with this system of financing the states' needs and refuse to vote for dedicated funds no matter how good the cause. People feel, rightly or wrongly, that they pay too many taxes; yet those taxes are not going to fund the state's most important needs. The system of dedicated funds does not work. (NOTE: I believe Jerry Brown signed a measure earlier this year to allow the general fund to borrow from "special funds" in order to cover basic needs.)
Yes I agree! I am not some rube that would let the tobacco boys tell me what to do. That Bill was written badley and relied on the goofball Gov Brown to pick a commitee. There was no way of telling where the money was going. The Sec Of State web page stated that 60% of it was going to go to ALL QUALIFIED RESEARCHERS, which could have meant it could have gone to China for all we know. The writers of the Bill exclaimed to me that it would be "political suicide' for the govenor to send the money outside cal. I had to remind them of past politians who have commited or attempted political suicide...John Edwards, Jeffery Wiener, ect ect. That bill wa written as if a 2 year old wrote it. Besides if Cal has the least to worry about tobacco illness (least amount of populous whom smoke) then lets just lay off the taxing of things that do not help the economy right now. I am a victim of tobacco. I contracted buergers 35 years ago, Lost both legs and 5 fingers before it was over. My doctor knew back then what it was,and NOW they come out and start telling people about it, Using scare tactics like the commercials they have been putting on TV? The money should be spent on the illegalization of tobacco. That will take it out of the hands of the future cancer victims not breaking the backs of the poor addicts that can't quit. Also I don't need law enforcement interfering in my family affairs. They never go after the source just fine the minor which in turn fines the family. This affects the people who can least afford a court appearence or a fine of any kind. Its a rightous thing to want to cure cancer but this has never worked in the past and it just attracts crooks who plunder the billions of uncountable dollars before anybody gets wind of it. Then they get a slap and they are their way again. TV ads had nothing to do with my decision to vote NO!, I READ THE PAPERWORK!
Ok. So CA could have raised the taxes on cigarettes and those would go to cancer research. So, it did not pass. But even if they would have won, it doesnt mean people would understand what is involve in the cancer thing. Research means nothing to someone without insurance. A lot of people donate to research and what happens? When your really need to use the drugs that research brought about you have to pay an arm and a leg or you dont get the meds. I stopped giving for that reason. The meds are so expensive I was priced out of them and because I am working now, I cannot get them for free. So far I dont know who is getting them for free.
And as you say, Rachel, money is what rules American elections. The media requires a lot of money to educate and to communicate with voters so even the media wont help the truth if they let falsehood go through the airwaves as if they were true. The media is actually a corporation and their objective is to make money for their stock holders.
Buddy Roemer did not stand a chance of winning even though he is one decent guy.
“I am afraid the ordinary citizen will not like to be told that the banks can and do create money. And they who control the credit of the nation direct the policy of Governments and hold in the hollow of their hand the destiny of the people.” Reginald McKenna, as Chairman of the Midland Bank, addressing stockholders in 1924.
In reality, in this world were credit dictates even how much money you will pay for insurance, it does not matter how hard you work. If hard work really turns into wealth we would have a lot of waitresses and janitors who are part of the 1%. Domestic workers will be billionaires.
“It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and money system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.” Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company.
I repeat this again and again...until SOMEONE (who? Not Obama Mr Drone-Assassinator In-Chief) gets a NEW investigation into Building 7 that fell on 911 and is NOT mentioned in the official myth...Republicons will CONTINUE to do what they did that day...again and again while diminishing the 99% and demolishing people's Democracy.
Both Rumsfeld and Leiberman have said on video they know NOTHING about Building 7. I ask again for SOMEONE in media to keep asking this because otherwise...we ARE truly lost.
Bob..:(
Dear Rachel. Is it my imagination that everywhere I read articles either here or HP that there are all these mean and hateful remarks from the conservative side? It's like they don't have anything else to do but go to liberal/progressive sites and just leave snarky, mean comments.
Sharon,
The right wing blogs encourage crossovers while they DO NOT allow us to post on their blogs. They often mention MSNBC shows and stir up the "angst" against "libruls".
At FoxNation, if you disagree with what they have to say, they will "flag" you so your posts have to be "reviewed" by the moderator. Of course the moderator doesn't look at your posts until the comment period has closed so your posts never see the light of day. It is their way of "ensuring consensus". I know, it happened to me. You have to read what they post on their web page as the propaganda it is:
YOU are intolerant if YOU disagree with them. The only "freedom of thought" they allow is freedom to believe THEIR thoughts. However, you ARE allowed to use any filthy language you want if you aim it at a Democrat!
I remember a quote from Steve Jobs, Dogma, Living with the results of someone elses thinking, never could get interested in what Fox news had to say. From the very beginning every time I would try to watch Fox News I would get a visceral response to anythong they had to say. Gave up trying went to other places. Mostly MSNBC
@CNBC They are showing the special on prisoners employed by corporations. They get paid pennies on the dollar while corporations take in the profits.
I say sure put them to work, but for the community as volunteers. They can sweep the streets but why give them a job that a citizen without a criminal record can do to take care of his/her family. Corporations are just can do anything just to make money for their stock holders. It does not come in the form of lower prices of goods and services. In the meantime, tax payers have to pay the salaries of those CEO who administer those privatized prison systems per prisoner..No wonder they want more prisoners. Lining up their pockets with public dough. When is the population going to wake up.
HO LEE COW............
You mean you have to prove you are a US citizen to vote???
GEEEE madcow what is wrong with that????
Bill Wolf looks likes he drunk all the time...
The Tampa Times took him to task...
He lost.
But we (by that I mean the Democrats cuz I am one) need to calm down and realize that there are lots of Democrats that don't belong to unions that are passionate and committed. The Democrats are way way bigger than just the unions.
So get involved!!
Obama 2012
Mc Cain is a POW.... you dope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And madcow your buddy chris mathews dodge the war as well...
Just in to the news room madcow the Vietnam war is over...
You spin more than top
Rachel just was repeating statements that Mitt Romney has actually made over the years. Public record.
What appears to be happening is that Romney is doing the spinning.
Reporting facts is not spin.
The Vietnam war is over. That is not the issue. Whether you can believe a word Romney says most definitely IS.
Hello, I live in California and I voted no to prop. 29 for the simple fact that the tax money for cancer research didn't stay in California. You can't ask for additional state taxes only to ship the money abroad.
Today, I heard that congress is again taking time off. I say," Fire them all."
I consider myself liberal and I voted against the tax. I didn't like that a yes vote would create a new bureaucracy that would decide how the money was spent. Too many times in CA we have voted for something that sounds good but then, the money is squandered on committees, impact studies, and the like. Seems to me, the drug companies are the ones profiting from all sides, they already get tons of donations for research then charge an arm and a leg for the drugs. No doubt smoking is bad for you but so is eating sugar, which when metabolized stimulates cancer growth, but you don't see a big push to tax that. A heck of a lot more people eat sugar than smoke especially in CA where we have one of the lowest smoking rates in the US with the highest population.
Hi Rachel, I, too, live in California and don't smoke. I voted no because there was a general statement,'ALL QUALIFIED RESEARCHERS' which to me says that the money could go any where and would not need to stay in California. I believe that California tax money should stay in California. If the prop said that, I would have voted yes.
Rachel,
I voted no on prop 29 in California.
They raised the taxes on cigarettes about 2 years ago here in California. A pack of American Spirit cost $7.00. It's ridiculous. The price would have gone to 10.00 a pack if 29 would have passed.
I also have no faith in The American Cancer Society coming up with anything to cure cancer. That would end their careers. I consider the business itself to be a scam.
Plus who could afford it anyway if they actually did find a cure (which they won't) except the very wealthy , those with the expensive brand of health insurance.
I am sick of people picking on smokers and I don't believe that second hand smoke is as dangerous as people seem to think it is. I practically grew up in an ashtray with 4 smokers around me . I have smoked for 40 years and have 100% lung capacity . I do smoke organic only for the past 20 years and that does help alot. The other kind of additive loaded cigarettes are not good. But I do like to smoke and do not like the idea of paying $10.00 a pack.
I think cars are the real problem and would prefer that we get rid of them or at least park them outside the city limits.
Voter supression is wrong, irregardless of party. I normally find Rachel snarky and tune out but on this issue I hope she stays with it from a non-partisan journalist perspective.
Hi Rachel, a few months ago I posted a comment about a book I had read in the early 70's, Called "The Captains and the Kings," author Taylor Caldwell. It's amazing how the author had such a grasp on the politics of the early 1900's and how similar it is to present day elections. Large amounts of corporate money being used along with radio and newspapers to entice voters to their way of thinking. (media and internet was not around in the times this book was written about). Radio and newspapers were more than enough to get an election to go their way. Now, with Media, talk radio and the internet, Well, need I say more. A great book, I read it often.
California Lib-dependent here that voted no on Prop 29(I am a non-smoker). Had nothing to do with the ads. Had everything to do with the budget issues that this state faces. The Prop was going to back pay portions of other non-funded programs. I would rather those $735M go towards helping people buy things in the state that will generate some tax revenue for the state. And why dip, yet again, into the "make smokers pay more" cookie jar. Medical research and advancment is important but I feel like this was a step to far and an unfair burden on people who choose to smoke.
