Major political players, including the two major-party presidential candidates, rarely get asked about the European debt crisis, which is a shame -- the health of our fragile domestic recovery is linked closely with the fate of the Eurozone.
With that in mind, I was glad to see House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) field some questions about the subject today. More importantly, consider what he said in response.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday offered a pessimistic view on the debt crisis in Europe, saying, "I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel." [...]
"The problems in Europe are serious," Boehner replied. "Their recession is affecting our economic growth today, and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel."
Now, Boehner's larger point was that he wants to see policymakers act on looming tax and spending deadlines before the elections, rather than a six-week crash session in the lame-duck session, which he sees as an insurance policy of sorts against Europe-driven instability. Expediency is hardly an unreasonable goal, though the Speaker may not realize it's his own caucus' intransigence that makes any progress all but impossible.
But take another look at Boehner's thoughts on the relevance of the European crisis: "Their recession is affecting our economic growth today."
Really? That's true, of course, but since when do Republicans admit that? According to the GOP script, President Obama's communist/Kenyan/fascist/vampire anti-business radicalism is responsible for all that ails America's economy. If Europe is undermining U.S. growth, as Boehner believes, then Obama isn't to blame for sluggish growth, at least not entirely.
Maybe Boehner will have to walk this back?
Incidentally, Boehner's right that Europe's crises are affecting our economy, but what he may not realize is that European austerity measures -- the kind of policies Boehner's party intends to impose on Americans -- are making matters worse.
It's a development that Democrats are apparently slowly picking up on.
In American politics, being European is bad again. But these days, President Obama and the Democrats, not the Republicans, are holding up their allies across the Atlantic as the poster children for bad policies.
In a new line of attack, top Democrats are arguing that Mitt Romney and the Republicans, with their focus on spending cuts, are following Europe's austerity-first example, to dismal effect so far: Greece over the edge; Italy, Spain, Portugal on the edge; Britain in recession; and the United States suffering through a needlessly weak recovery because of government cuts.
Former President Bill Clinton offered the clearest version of the case on Monday night, when, introducing Mr. Obama at a fund-raiser in New York, he listed the steps that Mr. Obama had taken to spur the economy, and then asked: "Why aren't things roaring along now? Because Europe is in trouble and because the Republican Congress has adopted the European economic policy."
Mr. Clinton added, "Who would have thought, after years and years, even decades, in which the Republican right attacked 'old Europe,' that they would embrace the economic policies of the euro zone -- austerity and unemployment now at all costs."
Don't expect President Obama to get out in front on this one -- he can't alienate European officials, who he's still trying to convince should move away from austerity -- but Dems are reportedly getting more engaged on the strategy of tying the GOP to the failed European model that the right is eager to bring to our shores.

Of course Bonehead will walk backwards to extricate himself ((& GOP cohorts) from the truth - cutting government along with spending is NOT a good policy! And hopefully the democrats will have enough spine to speak up and tie European "austerity" to exactly why the Europeans are carrying pitchforks & torches - and how that same plan for "austerity" if enacted here in the US would be calamitous for US also!
Then again the lamestream corporate owned media here in America isn't the best when it comes to objectively reporting the "news" and giving Americans the information needed to make sound decisions. It might be time to start gathering American pitchforks & torches....
Tar and feathers gathered we await a November to remember.
The problem here is that the rich and shameless and the religious kooks are concentrating on more local elections. A mayor or Governor can be bought a lot cheaper than a Congressman or a President. Also take notice that when a State like Virgina gets bought the "elected" officials ignore public opinion knowing their constituents will blindly re-elect them anyway.
I am taking to believe that Ben Franklin's proposal to use the Turkey as the National bird was more a commentary than a bow to the noble turkey itself. But then it took over a hundred years for the Nation to become a turkey.
No Boehner needs to press forward that the Europeans are following the Tea Party's lead and having the political courage of taking the unpopular position of cutting unsustainable government spending. There is no quick fix to cut out the cancer of runaway government spending by Greece, Wisconsin, Spain, California, Italy, and New York. It took decades for these states to run up their spending for overly generous government wages, benefits and pensions and will take years before these economies eventually rebound and prosper. All of these governments need to make hard structural changes to ensure the long term health of their economies.
Props to Boehner for straight talking. There will not be a walking back of his speaking the truth.
Yeah, I feel I must add; desde cuando does Speaker Orange-glow give a flying fiesta about the domestic economy again, exactly???? And what does el D-baggo plan to do about the Eurozone?
My guess is that Boehner and other Republicans will find a way - no, make up a way - to blame Europe's economy on Obama, which also makes it Obama's fault that our recovery isn't faster or bigger.
The Orange Boner only has to walk it back if, by some incredible chance, someone in our degenerate post-journalism MSM notices the inconsistency and asks him about it. Which means he won't.
I figure I'll call him duck a l'orange or the grand marnier from now on..
GOP-ECONOMIC TRAITORS AGAINST THIS COUNTRY.
Needs to be repeated over and over by the Dems...
and, that if you wanna know what the GOP wants to do to you - LOOK AT EUROPE.
Both here and globally, the rush towards austerity and an anti-growt h agenda is killing jobs and ruining any hope for a real economic recovery. Europe is choking itself to death thanks to anti-growth policies. In America, the drive to slash government spending from Washington down to the state and local level is having a devastating impact on the overall economy. The reason the unemployment rate is still above 8 percent is because half a million government jobs have been eliminated since the beginning of 2011. That cannot continue without another recession being the end result. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
My view is that the republicans (not the tea party republicans) but the republicans who are actual republicans KNOW that Obama is right about the economy, but are politically motivated to oppose him. As such, when the US had its credit rating slashed by the ratings agencies, it sort of scared him (them), so now, reality is starting to set in....
The Republican party has a history of "What happen in Europe doesn't affect the US". They said before WWI and WWII. as part of their isolationist agenda. They were wrong then and they are wrong now except for Boehner who I bet will walk back his statement.
Some years ago, after I had been complaining about a willfully ignorant boss, a friend sent me a link to an Australian garage band called 'The Tenants' and their song "You Sh*t Me To Tears". Just lately, whenever I hear Republicans, and especially John Boehner, speak, one of the verses always leaps to mind:
'Well you've got a nice car and you drive real fast
Hard to see where you're going with your head up your ass
Your voice is kinda muffled 'cause you're so full of sh*t
And all I've go to say about it...
You sh*t me to tears
Am I making this clear?
So just give me a break
For f**ks sake..."
Kinda sums it all up really.
Can't wait until MSNBC cancels Maddow's show because of her terrible ratings. No one wants to listen to a bitter spinster.
So you would rather listen to someone who just spouts Republican talking points than someone who speaks the truth and is trying to hold elected officials responsible for their actions?
Again with the spinster label?! David you need to update your vocabulary. Also to call Rachel bitter is to call Rush Limabaugh jolly. I don't foresee MSNBC cancelling TRMS anytime soon considering they have been giving her guest hosts their own shows. Please please David get a life!
