Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has kept a relatively low profile in recent months, following the end of her strange presidential campaign in January. But Molly Ball reports today that Bachmann is not only back, she's up to her old tricks.
Remember when Michele Bachmann was the crazy right-wing congresswoman liberals loved to hate? The one who could be counted on to make inflammatory, nutty-sounding accusations on a regular basis, like when she said the media should investigate and expose the "anti-American views" of congressional liberals? Well, good old Michele Bachmann is back. [...]
[S]he appears to be back at her trademark paranoid alarmism. In a speech last week, Bachmann devoted her remarks to raising the alarm about an upcoming "suicide-bomber conference" in Chicago. She called on the president to stop it on the grounds that it was "subversive." She warned the audience, "We could wake up some morning wondering, 'How in the world did America come under sharia law?'"
This appears to have all the elements Bachmann loves to talk about, but as is often the case, her fear-mongering doesn't stand up well to scrutiny.
There is a kernel of truth to the story: there is a fringe Muslim group that planned a gathering near Chicago, but (a) the group opposes violence and suicide bombings; (b) the conference was canceled two weeks ago; and (c) the president doesn't have the legal authority to stop Americans from peaceably assembling.
Ball added, "But none of this stopped Bachmann from making the conference the centerpiece of her argument that the president has failed to deal adequately with the threat from terrorism."
No, of course not.
Bachmann proudly embraces bizarre conspiracy theories; she routinely says ridiculous things on national television; she pretends to grasp public policies she doesn't understand; and her worldview is detached from reality. Even as the Republican Party leaps off a right-wing cliff, Bachmann stands out for her unique brand of madness. And thanks to redistricting in Minnesota, she'll probably remain in Congress as long as she wants, warning about "suicide-bomber conferences" that exist only in her imagination.

Michelle Bachman is a sanity suicide bomb, but she nevers stops exploding. Instead of claiming innocent victims she infects them with the Teatarded Flu for which the only cure is a actual suicide bomb.
"Nutty sounding"??? How about just plain nuts.
Too bad Moron Michele can't meet a suicide bomber in person.
That's the kind of dumb rhetoric that we don't need right now.
They should put a large fence around her district as it appears to be populated with people of questionable mental stability.
A very sad commentary that a person this unbalanced can get elected ( along with Allan West and the rest of the lunatics
wrong post reply >_>
Mister Romney, look no further. Your VP candidate is right here!
That would be amazing. It would be an epic comedy movie that lasted until the end of the year. Just like last election cycle
OH NO YOU DON'T!!
Sorry to yell, but we do NOT want to go through that again!!!
I think back to how I felt Monday night before the election in 2008 absolutely terrified at the thought of Vice President Palin.
Michele - Oh my!
What is worse:
My pick is #4.
I would rephrase #4 as follows: So many people probably agree with her even though they know better.
She really did deserve the presidential nomination.
Apparently all the airplane highlighting has paid off: http://wonkette.com/474020/michele-bachmann-is-eternally-hilarious-airplane-reading-edition
time was that fools like bachmann, paul, and king could be appreciated for their entertainment value. they were the political equivalent of a carney freak show. no longer. these kind of delusionals now rule the republican party. if they achieve their ultimate wet dream, that of having one of their own or a passable stooge (say the noodle spined mittens) elected president, and a majority of the electorate tires of their shenanigans, what's to keep them from declaring an election loss null and void? their patriotism? their commitment to the constitution? give me a break! this is getting scary.
Mrs. Bachmann is a symbol of the de-volvement (?) and mis-education of many in this nation. Everything is either a conspiracy by the leftist/muslims/or your target here or it's twisted to fit a conspiracy! Simplistic bumper sticker slogans is what we get, and these people have the nerve to be "educated", puhlease! There was a report released a month or two back that stated about 20 years ago Congress operated on at least a freshman college level, now they operate at the level of 9th graders - very over-indulged 9th graders that need to be spanked is what I'm thinking.
At the risk of being the Grammar Police, is the word you want "devolution"?
Every time I see her face, all I can think is "bat-sh!t crazy..."
What are the odds she is the source of the leaks, from her position on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence? That would be a good ending of her political career since she will always be electable in her district....
I was reading this and thinking... wait, another NRA conference? But then went, WHOA! Wrong end of the stick!
This woman needs her own TV show. Not doing anything, we just sit her in a room with a microphone, roll the camera for an hour, and listen.
Not because she's insightful, mind. Just because she's rip-snortingly hilarious in her utter lunacy and her severe allergy to anything approaching common sense or reality (and I'm so glad I finally got to use the phrase "rip-snorting" in a sentence).
The only thing I can add is that it needs to be a padded room.
And I am glad I got to read the phrase "rip-snorting" Thanks!
Of course the President has the authority to declare martial law and put an end to all these people of the wrong religions assembling on the wrong day of the week. I'm sure that would have been her first act as preznit.
thebewilderness:
I sense that you may be speaking with snark. That being as it may, in fact, U.S. Presidents going back at least as far as Eisenhower have claimed the right, supported by statutes enacted by Congress, to declare martial law in the event of an emergency. Each administration, now including that of President Obama, has issued an Executive Order detailing how this might be implemented.
Executive Order -- National Defense Resources Preparedness
From Eisenhower on, this has been merely a part of standard, boring, "emergency preparedness" (although I'll admit Shrub made me nervous). That said, the thought of such authority falling into the hands of a whack-a-loon like Bachmann... who knows how she'd define "emergency"? Words I like to think I know seem to have different meanings to her. It's the stuff of some of my worst dystopian nightmares!
