A big TRMS Happy Birthday to Sir Paul McCartney, who turns 70 today. Go ahead, try to pick your favorite McCartney songs--either with The Beatles, with Wings or solo. Three hours later, you may find you're only up to 1967 or so. (A quick survey of the office yielded votes for "Blackbird," "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Hey Jude," "Two of Us," "For No One," "You Won't See Me," "Silly Love Songs," "Penny Lane," "I've Just Seen A Face," "With A Little Luck," "Band on the Run," and "Jet."
(For the record, Rachel is partial to the album "Revolver"---all of it.)
Your McCartney song favorites, tributes, stories etc. about this absurdly talented man are all welcome below ---and Sir Paul? We forgive you for "Maxwell's Silver Hammer."
It was a different time, after all.

Lovely Rita! He wrote that one, right?
Yes.
Coo-Coo-Ca-Choo
Everybody's got something to hide... except for me and my monkey.
I'm a Maybe I'm Amazed/Golden Slumber/ Hey Jude guy. And as far as the new stuff, Sing the Changes is pretty solid.
Rachel was close. But for early Beatles, gotta go with "Rubber Soul." Every song...,
Thank you TRMS people for this.
I'm on and off for Beatles and McCartney songs, but today, I seem to be on.
Live and Let Die for me.

WHAT? OMG
"No more lonely nights", "I've just seen a face", but also all the songs he played in the electrifying performance on the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater @ Letterman, that was mind blowing! In particular The Fireman: http://youtu.be/CG5Cn18jeNY
I meant, "Sing the Changes" (not The Fireman!)
I LOVE Maxwell's Silver Hammer! It's a hoot! Not my fave Sir Paul song, however -- can't even pick just one. Yesterday, Hey Jude, Long and Winding Road, and ALL the early ones like I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You. Ah, happy youth.
I will admit it: I don't like "Hey Jude." At all.
Revolver is my #2 favorite Beatles album; #1 = Rubber Soul.
I can understand that. Hey Jude is better looked at in a historical context. (1), songs that were that long just didn't get played on the radio, yet this ended up topping the charts. (2) it was the first single from the band's own label, which was a pretty big deal, (3) it was written to to Julian Lennon by Paul to help him get through his parent's divorce, and (4) it was a pretty amazing song coming about as the Beatles were disintegrating.
"All You Need is Love" is a song in a similar vein to this... not the greatest of songs, but it was the first song broadcast around the world via satellite. The BBC asked the Beatles to write is specifically for this broadcast.
"Yesterday"... hands down. "Blackbird" is a close second, and "Maybe I'm Amazed" is third.
I love Revolver and Rubber Soul...both my faves. Pretended that "Hey, Jude" was written for ME! Really like "Blackbird," "Maybe I'm Amazed," and "I Will." (WHo knows how long I've loved you...etc.) I love ballads, and Sir Paul is masterful with them. Love "Norwegian Wood..." but Lennon's birthday was October 9...so I digress.
VERY excited to assume that Dr, Maddow is schlumping around the office since she weighed in on her favorite Beatles album!!! YAY!!!!! I can feel the planet realigning with the stars already!!!!
I wonder how John would feel about TRMS staff co-opting "I Am the Walrus" as a metaphor for Paul? Hmmm....
Didn't you listen to The White Album? "The Walrus was Paul" (Glass Onion)
Oh yeah...totally forgot about that! Thanks for the reminder...
Love Paul, but it's hard (though I do) to forgive "Get Back". Jojo and Loretta need love too.
One of my favorites is "Back Seat of My Car," from Ram. But there are just too many.
Another song... "Long Tall Sally"... yeah, I know he didn't write it, but he belted it out of the park.
And Rachel... damn straight - Revolver is amazing. It was at the crux just as they were going all psychadelic. So the songs are experimental, but still "tight" pop songs.
OK, now I can't work anymore. I need to go on a Beatles binge.
As a Beatle-Things We Said Today.
With Wings-Maybe I'm Amazed (Live version)
Other (solo or with Linda, Stevie or Michael)-Maybe I'm Amazed (studio version)
And while I understand Joe Schmoe's point about why Hey Jude is considered such a classic I also am glad that thanks to chemgirl I now know I'm not the only person on earth who can't stand it.
I LOVE Maxwells silver hammer!
My favorite song is "Paperback Writer" and my family and I were blessed last year in July when Sir Paul McCartney came to Chicago on his tour. I was sitting in the the upper deck at Wrigley Field waiting for Paul to come out on stage and a young man named Christopher placed his hand on my shoulder and told me that it is customary for Paul to give people who are sitting far away an opportunity to come up to the front to watch the show. He gave me and my family front row tickets. Not only were they front row tickets but they were in the center and we watched Sir Paul McCartney right in front of him and he gave us the thumbs up. It was a dream come true. It was the most amazing concert and he sang "Paperback Writer" my favorite song. I screamed so much that night that I lost my voice. Sir Paul McCartney is a knight in shining armour.
From the Sgt. Peppers' album: Fixin' A Hole
Dave Grohl and Norah Jones Maybe I'm Amazed @ Kennedy Center Honoring Paul McCartney. Ahhhh....
Oooh, the Kennedy Center full tribute (pulls you mercilessly out of time, but the annoying occasional skips (?) definitely push you back in like a rough jolt. This one prefaces with his background, though, which is worth it--18:33).
Tribute sans background -- 13:51.
F*yeah.
This one brings tears to my eyes.
Amazing song. Dave Grohl is, as always, fantastic. And Norah Jones is wonderful.
Thanks for this, InTheMoutain. +1 UpArrow for you.

It's just too hard to pick a favorite McCartney or Beatles song because there are so many excellent ones arranged in different styles. One thing I'm certain of is no one has done a remake of a Beatles song better than the Beatles and it's a mistake to try.
i heard the bass on rain and pretty much forgave him for anything i didn't like
can't believe no one's mentioned 'long and winding road'--one of the best melodies ever. and altho lennon did say 'the walrus is paul' he later explained that he didn't really mean it(paul being much too pretty to be a walrus)
I was going to mention that, Lennon sticking that in a song-- he was not above pulling a leg now and then (or jerking a chain).
