John Adams, a reporter in Montana, features a photo tour of the "Obama Outhouse" parked outside the MT GOP state convention last weekend, here on his blog:
http://mtlowdown.blogspot.com/2012/06/opposing-displays-outside-gop.html
One convention attendee relates that the GOP asked that the outhouse be removed from the convention center property last Saturday, and it was moved across the street to a public parking lot.
Unfortunately, "non-profit" will serve republicans well as the term itself is ambigious so they can infer whomever they wish to villify. I've already seen rightees going after public unions as they have non-profit status. The seed is thus planted and trying to then explain that MANY organizations both left and right have this status falls on deaf ears. Seems like someone is already trying to imply that tax dollars funding "social welfare" non-profits are really for Democrat campaign bids. It's only a matter of time before we see this on Mitt's Mendacity list. Oops, meant to link this to Comment #2...
I work in the "social welfare" non-profit sector and the very idea that non-profits spent $95 million in the 2010 election cycle is ludicrous on it's face. Somebody must have slipped a decimal somewhere. Even those non-profits that have their own policy and advocacy staff certainly don't have that kind of money laying around to toss into electioneering. This is just nonsense.
My first thought when I hear "non-profit" organization is the kind of "social welfare" non-profit that you work with. Yes that would be astounding if they could spend that amount of money!
I'm not an expert at all but from the article: "non-profit groups, known as 501 (c)(4)s, for the section of the tax code under which they are organized."
For instance - from Wikipedia - "Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies (Crossroads GPS)is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation that works in conjunction with American Crossroads. As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Crossroads GPS's primary purpose is the advancement of social welfare including public policy advocacy, although it is permitted to engage in political spending as well. Crossroads GPS is required to report what it spends, but it is not required to publicly disclose any donor information." [I added the bold font].
If church electioneering and such were included...
I think we should use our heads on this one. Non-profits have an image to uphold and if this story has any truth to it then that image is gone. Talk about a self-inflicted wound.
The term "non-profit" has been corrupted by the use of these organizations like Crossroads GPS.
From Wikipedia:
"The voluntary sector or community sector (also non-profit sector or "not-for-profit" sector) is the sphere of social activity undertaken by organizations that are for non-profit[1] and non-governmental. This sector is also called the third sector, in reference to the public sector and the private sector. Civic sector is another term for the sector, emphasizing the sector's relationship to civil society."
And:
"With a growing number of non-profit organizations focused on social services, the environment, education and other unmet needs throughout society, the nonprofit sector is increasingly central to the health and well-being of society.[5] Peter Drucker suggests that the nonprofit sector provides an excellent outlet for a variety of society's labor and skills."
Does that sound AT ALL what Crossroads GPS does?
1-Campaign Finance: Am I the only one thinking that Mitt's VP decision was made long ago? There will be a conglomerate Vice Presidency, comprised of the Koch brothers, Adelson, Trump, and whoever else pays the entrance fee. Can you imagine a campaign button with Adelson's or Trump's face on it? People would try to brush it off your lapel, thinking it was dirt.
2. Clemons' Acquittal: This is more than a sports story. When the underlying hearings were being held, the country was facing serious economic and political issues, but Congress decided to hold nationally televised hearings on drug use in baseball. Why? To look like they were addressing the nation's problems when they were really avoiding them. Whether or not Clemons used performance enhancing drugs, Congress deserves Clemons' acquittal for it's malfeasance/nonfeasance, and for frittering away resources on two prolonged trials, all for naught.
Kerry to play Romney? Not even close. Kerry doesn't have a metabolism.
Marco Rubio is said to be the fastest rising star in the political arena, according to whom I wonder? If only politicians would think for themselves these days and not for those who buy them, maybe us Latinos would feel proud of someone like him.
