Rep. Todd Akin
No surprise that Republicans are apoplectic over today’s Supreme Court decision, but U.S. Rep. Todd Akin from Missouri went the Full Wack-a-doo. To wit (with our annotations):
"This is a crushing blow to freedom1 and an absolute insult2 to the dignity3 of all Americans.4 I am deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court5 for giving the government the authority to force citizens to buy a product.6 I believe this encroachment of government is unconstitutional and offensive.7 It puts the life and death health decisions of our families and loved ones in the hands of Washington Bureaucrats.8 We don't want the compassion of the IRS9 or the efficiency of the DMV in our healthcare system.10… Now we must work tirelessly to continue defunding and destroying the monster that is Obamacare.11"
1. Paramedics say Ms. Freedom suffered three cracked ribs and a concussion. Thank you, “Chief Justice” Roberts.
2. Insult, i.e. “Your health care is so ugly, we had to tie a steak around its neck so the dog would play with it.”
3. Think: Lady Liberty in a sparkly tube top and Daisy Dukes.
4. And by all Americans, he means Rep. Todd Akin. The millions who WILL be able to afford health care now are probably Belgian.
5. Rep. Akin thought they were dating, turns out it was just a Facebook thing.
6. Rep. Akin is referring to the Obama Administration’s top secret Force Feed Them Broccoli, Then Take Their Guns Initiative set for Spring, 2013.
7. See also: Rep. Akin’s response to the Season Three finale of “Glee.”
8. Exactly! Washington Bureaucrats should be spending all their time wiping out women’s reproductive rights and cutting taxes for billionaires.
9. So, for the record: The man enraged about his fellow Americans gaining access to health care is passing judgment about the compassion of others. Got it.
10. Wow, one bad driver’s license photo and some people get all cranky-pants.
11. IT… IS… ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is no representative of the people, this is an emo drama queen in congressional mufti. PIMP-slap this little crybaby back into reality.
I think Akin and reality will never be on speaking terms again.
Again? That implies he ever was.
And complementing Representative Wack-a-doo's statement, may I present the voices of his constituency:

Rachel, Thank you for tonight's program. The toxic talkers and Fox news nearly destroyed this country's chance to have affordable health care. They aren't going to suddenly stop maligning it because it now stands. Obama definitely needs to do the kind of advertizing that Mass. did to inform people of the benefits it offers.
You are so right, Rachel, and so smart. I love your show!
Today Justice Roberts saved the life of my daughter-in-law. Any questions?
My mother cried on the phone over this decision because Fox Noise had her so wound up and terrified. I should point out that without medicare, her breast cancer would not have been treated because her private health insurance considered it "pre-existing. She paid them for 18 years and, because 26 years ago she had uterine cancer, they wouldn't approve payment. I'd like to wring the neck of every single "personality" on that entire network.
Where does this blow hole get off speaking for all Americans. He should have prefaced that statement with the Palin qualifier of Real Americans.
"Now we must work tirelessly to continue defunding and destroying the monster that is Obamacare"
"Don't expect any work on anything else at all as long as I'm in Congress - except anti-abortion, Eric Holder hunting obstructionism."
"Oh, and P.S., don't touch MY benefits, peasants!"
Thanks for continuing to try and ruin our lives. You won't be happy until our country is in ruin.
Spoil Sport DeLuxe, Eh? (Canadian Accent added for emphasis)
He's one of the bureaucrats, for God's sake. Is he admitting he has no compassion for the people he serves?
He is absolutely reveling in his total lack of compassion for those people. He has no interest in actually serving them.
Except on a bed of rice to his corporate overlords.
Oh, so he has written a book titled To Serve My Constituents? He would!
He like MOST American's are not doing their home work and just catching little things they hear on their way to the kitchen!!! "THE MITT" helped make the outline for "OBAMACARE"They need to watch more MADDOW!!!!!!
LMAO!!! But just got off a "conference call" with Congressman Paul Broun here in the 10th District in Georgia.....same line of hysteria......one poor dissenter did manage to get through and give him some pushback. I'm sure there will be crosses burning on her lawn tonight.
June, I'm expecting the roving bands of gun-toting Broun supporters to gather on the square and burn Obama likenesses soon. It scares me how many of my neighbors are armed and very, unstable and dangerous right now as they spout on about "good old-fashioned American values"
Never doubt for an instant that if they don't get what they want through the ballot box, they will use force of arms. That is precisely why those on the right have been frantically amassing weapons. They clearly intend to "defend" themselves the way Germany did against Poland in 1939.
No, we don't want the DMV or the IRS in our health care system. We want profit-motivated, private-sector vendors on top of this @!$%#. Uncle Jim's Kidney Coverage (exterior only; inside of kidney requires separate policy). And so on. Pshhh.
Rachel, I love your blog! And kudos to Kent Jones for a fantastic submission. I shall never look at "Lady Liberty" the same way again!
Re: the notes:
3. you forgot the sparklers.
4. Wouldn't he say Mexican?
9-10. We just want our transvaginal probes, and we want them NOW.
Look at that twit. And now he has to go around promoting Romney who signed a mandate himself.
What a twisted and sordid existence.
What the hell did I just read?
This is just a crushing blow to all those Republican egos!
And if you call them on their social agenda or the 20th century bills they have been doing lately, they immediately go into their "Oh none of that is important. What is important and what the American people want is us to fix the economy and more jobs. " next Republican interviewed, raves on and on about all the things they are doing to take the vote away from half the country etc. but when called on it, "Oh that's not important. What is important is jobs, jobs, jobs."
I love it when the righties say things like, "Obamacare takes away your FREEDOM!"
Gee, who knew the ability to go bankrupt and lose your home over an illness was freedom to Republicans like Rick Perry and others. That's not MY idea of freedom!
I guess they figure Janis Joplin defined freedom: Freedom's Just another word for nothing left to lose! (I don't think so!) Call me a crazy Democrat!
Me too, because I know their code. They mean "Obamacare takes away your freedom", freedom to be ripped off.
Did I hear Romney talk about keeping the government out of our healthcare? Old Tea Party talk by people on Medicare, a government program! The Republicans are more interested in the cost of healthcare to corporations than the impact on individuals who can be denied coverage or have unaffordable premiums at the will of big insurance without the act - thus the name - Affordable Care Act.
He's just crying on behalf of all those insurance CEO's that will not be able to afford a 23 million dollars mansion per year starting 2014... Wish they worked more and paid their employees more from the hefty salaries they pay themselves!
Universal Healthcare with a government option plus public campaign funding is what would fix this country, not people like this guy!
And just think. John Roberts delivered the blow. Who appointed him, Dubya or Cheney?
I was thinking Cheney or Rove myself.
Careful with Roberts, you don't cozy up to someone who's punched you, just because he gives you a nice lollypop afterward. This guy's slight lean to the left now cannot negate his vote on Citizen's United or his follow up vote knocking down of the State of Montana campaign finance reform law. The only time my dad leans left is when he needs to release some gastric pressure. I think Roberts is a lot like my dad.
Thank you Todd Akin for once again giving a bad name to my home state...
I'm pretty sure they give a bad name to ANY state they come from. Look at the Republican from my state of Indiana - Mike Pence. Probably actually made the DUMBEST statement regarding this issue today. They're too eager to act like fools.
Never fear, Matt and Lola, I have you beat. My representative in Congress is Steve King! (I;ll take my bows now, because I win). Last election he said his opponent wasn't worthy to debate, so he refused. he didn't even campaign and he got about 75% of the vote. However, this year, they melded two districts together and dist. 4 is very democratic, and dist. 5 is very Dutch Reformed We love Steve King people. So we are going all out to help Christi Vilsack win the representative for district 4.
And to so proudly represent the state of Texas is none other than "oops" Perry himself!! Talk about embarrassing!
When you can't get anything worthwhile done yourself you have to knock those who do. That's been the motto of the republican party ever since the late 60's. They are comparing this monumental event to one of the most horrific days in American history in 9/11, the horrific event that happened under their watch by the way. Never seen so many well to do people with no class at all, I suppose I should feel good in watching rich people demean themselves this way, but I don't.
Life and death decisions made by insurance companies have killed countless people already. People who have paid murderous premiums only to be denied life saving care. Single payer coverage would have been best but Obama Cares is a good start,
Corporate America has seldom hesitated to kill people for the sake of short-term profit.
Now we must work tirelessly to get people like U.S. Rep. Todd Akin voted out of office!
Voting these goons out of office is what is needed. They're traitors to the people that vote them into office.
Waiting for the part where he says "Screw this, I'm moving to Canada!"
I've actually heard some people say that last night! I just sat down on the floor and ROTFLMAO!!!!
Somebody from Canada better start explainng what their country is all about or they are going to have an "immigration problem" with American mental midgets who hate gun laws, taxes, and "Obamacare"!!
Hilarious. Having lived in Australia (where we have 'socialised medicine' - apparently we are communists here doncha know) and in the US dealing with health cover, the former is simpler and fairer for all. I am amazed how much people fear the boogeyman 'change'. The US has the best health care available in the world - the issue being it is not available for all to access. Thankfully it got through - my biggest fear know is Romney getting in. This change is definitely NOT good. Now that's a boogeyman.
A good online friend of mine is in NZ. Her Mother is beginning to have dementia, so she sent me pictures of the beautiful assisted living place her MOm has moved to. its gorgeous, on the beach, flowers, walking trails, beauty shop, activities, its gorgeous and its 100% free. when we talked about how beautiful it is, she was amazed. she said, "My Mom worked part of the time I was growing up, and of course, our elderly deserve to get care for free." I explained how much it can cost here, and its not that pretty, more institutionalized, and she was amazed. they go to the doctor, go to the pharmacy, get their meds, all free. And we think we have good health care. lol
My mum lives in Canada. She has an elder "advocate" who looks out for her, paid by the Ontario Government. He makes sure her doctors talk to each other, that the pharmacist is reading all her prescriptions for compatibility and seeks out care and services for her that she may not be aware of. He contacts me if there are problems and generally is a good listener for my mum when she needs to talk. Now THAT is compassion, and I think Canadians have a lot to be proud of.
Like us, in Canada (we didn't like it at first), you will see the benefits and come to love it. The main benefit is peace of mind and the knowledge that you won't have to be super rich or go bankrupt to get health care.
I watched an interview with people from Europe and Canada, and the interviewer was asking them things like, "What is a copay?" They didn't have a clue. "What is a deductible?" No clue. What happens if you don't have money for your prescription? They were surprised. They thought we all had health care like theirs. He explained a copay and a deductible to them, They all said things like, "Oh no, I think that's ridiculous." etc.
It is ridiculous.
We have to have reasonable health care for all Americans; we are behind in this when many nations have better care then the United States. What better input than the late Edward Kennedy, whose State, at one time, had the best medical program, who better than Barack Obama to draft these provisions, and who better than the Supreme Court to agree? It's well overdue.
Congress are our servants. We all pay their salaries no matter which district they represent and yet they are faithful to Norquist and the NRA. The GOP created a brainwashed base who will accept anything their leaders tell them.
Well, that's what WE think. I'm very sure they don't think that way at all. we are the lowly that they have been hired to keep in line. and it isn't just the GOP. Inthe UK last election, the Fundamentalist Evangelicals got less than 1% of the vote. Sharron Angle in Nevada got about 45% of the vote and she's a nut! I worry a lot that we are going to get not what we deserve but what an idiot that hasn't got a clue votes for.
How long before Issa charges Robert's for contempt of congress.
I think the house voted today. The Black caucus walked out. I don't know if anybody joined them or not. It was like 260 to 87 or something like that. then the Senate gets to vote. I hope they don't vote yes on it.
Willow, The Black Caucus was joined by many more Democrats. I noticed Nancy Pelosi needed help down the stairs and was walking gingerly. According to vote
255 aye+ 67 nay= 322
435 - 322 = 113 Democrats (if all House members were there) walked out.
43 members of Congressional Black Caucus, so 70 walked out in support of them.
According to my calculations.
