Romney has had it up to here with people asking him to be more honest with voters.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that came out this week included an interesting, open-ended question: "What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Mitt Romney as president?" Poll respondents weren't offered any choices; they could offer any response they wanted.
The results weren't especially surprising -- the most common answer noted Romney being very wealthy. There were also plenty of folks who mentioned Romney's conservatism, his Mormon faith, his controversial positions on women's rights, etc.
Down towards the bottom of the list, however, was one that jumped out me: "Dishonest." For at least some respondents -- not a lot, but some -- the first thing that came to mind when thinking about Romney was the candidate's willingness to say things that aren't true.
It's good to know I'm not the only one who's noticed. In fact, the public response should probably be far more common given how quickly the Republican's record of falsehoods is growing. Consider, for example, the 24th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt's mendacity.
1. Following the Supreme Court's ruling on Arizona's anti-immigrant law, Romney said "we are still waiting" for President Obama "to present an immigration plan."
No, actually, we're not. Obama endorsed a comprehensive reform plan years ago, and presented his own detailed plan more than a year ago.
2. At a campaign event in Salem, Virginia, Romney said Obama had "all the support he needed" in Congress to pass immigration legislation during his first two years in office.
That's plainly false. There were Democratic majorities in both chambers, but not enough to overcome Republican filibusters.
3. At the same event, Romney said Obama "did not deal with immigration" policy.
Sure he did. Obama introduced a comprehensive immigration reform proposal; he increased deportations; he strengthened border security; and he used his prosecutorial discretion to implement the goals of the DREAM Act. Romney may not approve of these policies, but he should deny their existence.
4. Romney also argued that Obama "promised" to keep unemployment "below 8 percent" through the Recovery Act.
As Romney surely knows by now, that's simply not true.
5. Romney went on to accuse Obama of "raising taxes on small businesses."
In reality, Obama cut taxes on small business, many times, and Romney should probably understand that "cutting taxes" is the opposite of "raising taxes."
6. Romney said an "avalanche of new regulations" under Obama is standing in the way of "good jobs."
Actually, Obama approved fewer regulations in his first three years in office than Bush did in his first three years.
7. Romney also said Obama "says no to developing our oil resources."
Oil production is up under Obama.
8. Romney added, "Guess how many [trade] agreements this president has negotiated? Zero. No new agreements to open up markets for American goods."
Panama, Colombia, and South Korea know better.
9. Romney went on to say Obama "has put together almost as much public debt as all the prior president's combined."
10. Romney vowed, "I will get us to on track to a balanced budget."
There's overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Romney says his plan "can't be scored," but independent budget analysts have found his agenda would make the deficit bigger, not smaller, and add trillions to the national debt.
11. Romney shared an odd anecdote: "I was with a woman in Las Vegas, she has a business. She rents furniture to casinos and to conventioneers that come to Las Vegas... When the president said not to bother coming to Las Vegas to go to a company meeting, her business collapsed."
Obama actually said, in reference to Wall Street recklessness, "You are not going to be able to give out these big bonuses until you pay taxpayers back. You can't get corporate jets. You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime. There's got to be some accountability and some responsibility." To blame the failure of some random business in Nevada on this is ridiculous.
12. Romney added, "The president's put on us on path to Europe. Europe doesn't work in Europe. It'll never work here."
The irony is, Europe is trying to grow through austerity, just as Romney intends to do here. He's lying in a self-refuting sort of way.
13. At a campaign event in Sterling, Virginia, Romney said under the Affordable Care Act, "government bureaucrats get between us and our doctors."
In reality, this does not resemble the law in any way. (Perhaps Romney is thinking of Bob "Ultrasound" McDonnell?)
14. At the same event, Romney said, "The president cut $500 billion out of Medicare."
Romney says this a lot. He's not telling the truth.
15. In the same speech, Romney said under Obama, "wages have dropped by 10 percent."
That only makes sense if we count Obama's first year in office, which relies on a standard Romney believes is fundamentally unfair.
16. Romney also argued that Obama's "cap-and-trade proposal ... scared away jobs."
First, cap-and-trade was a Republican idea. Second, it didn't pass, so it couldn't have affected the job market.
17. In response to the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act, Romney argued, "Obamacare adds trillions to our deficits and to our national debt."
That's demonstrably ridiculous. The health care law, according the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office and every independent analysis, cuts the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming decade.
18. In the same remarks, Romney said, "Obamacare also means that for up to 20 million Americans, they will lose the insurance they currently have, the insurance that they like and they want to keep."
Jamelle Bouie took a look at this and concluded, "Romney is simply lying."
19. He added he intends to "make sure that those people who have pre-existing conditions know that they will be able to be insured and they will not lose their insurance."
At a minimum, that's wildly misleading. Under Romney's approach, millions of people with pre-existing conditions would be denied coverage -- and occasionally his campaign even admits it.
20. Romney went on to say, "Obamacare does not ... help lower the cost of health care."
Sure it does. It's already cutting costs, and it hasn't been fully implemented yet.
21. And in a campaign statement last night, Romney claimed, "With Obamacare fully installed, government will reach fully half of the economy."
There is no version reality in which this is true.

Chronicling Romney's Mendacity: sisyphean task, or augean task?
Well, first you have to roll the rock up the hill, then when it slips out of your hands, you have to run down past it to the stables, shovel a few pounds out of the stable, rush back to the foot of the hill just before the rock gets to the bottom, catch the rock, roll it up to the top and then repeat for seeming eternity.
There is no version of reality in which this is true. My republican friends remind me that they do not always have the same version of reality that I do. And just because their reality is not real does not mean that it is not their reality.
A reality that isn't real?
Never buy a dictionary from the RNC Gift Shop.
There doesn't have to be any reality in the World of Mitt Believe.
Those on the right always make their own reality, doncha know. You can do that when you are Ideologically Sound/Theologically Correct. :-/
That was not meant to be factually true. Woo Hoo, never thought I'd get to say/or write that one...LOL
In a quantumly infinite multiverse, there's no version of reality in which this is true!
;-)
So many great terms come up on this blog: Mitt Robme, Kochsucker, and now "World of Mitt Believe." [thanks to weneedaffordabepolitics] The ideas seem to flow so easily out of everybody's thoughts. If the shoe fits, wear it, I guess ... .
re: Obama's immigration policy... I'm pretty sure Romney doesn't consider mass amnesty to be a real policy. On the other hand, if he gets elected, he will have nearly unlimited powers.
Gee, I wonder how that's going to work out. Hmmm... I guess the easiest thing to do would be a blanket reversal of all Obama executive decisions.
You don't even see a little bit of irony in coming to the weekly "Chronicling Mitt's Mendacity" chapter and spewing this random collection of Republican lies, do you?
Probably don't even notice how coming here to quibble with just one out one of twenty one lies with, well more lies, just emphasizes the fact that even you, the most dedicated and reliable regurgitator of whatever nonsense your masters tell you to believe this week in the comment sections of this and many other liberal websites for four or five years now, couldn't find a way to challenge the other twenty.
Looks like the enthusiastic troll is back for an encore performance of last week's stunning success where he sat out to prove 30 of 30 Mittster lies were not lies and he succeeded precisely 0 times.
Check out our confused disabled troll's smashingly winning display of trollery:
http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/22/12359704-chronicling-mitts-mendacity-vol-xxiii#c67310881
Not to worry, if I show the first one is bogus, the rest will invite critical appraisal. Not from the peanut gallery, but thinking lurkers.
Non sequitur. And it exposes you even further than you've already been exposed. Desperately throwing your own feces against the wall and hoping nobody cleans it up isn't really the way to get people to take you seriously.
That's all you're about. It's all you can do. You're no better than the science illiterates who practice the same tactics in climate science hoping to confuse and sow doubt instead of shed light.
Batting .000 doesn't convince people that you have any credibility vis a vis somebody batting .990.
You might have a point about amnesty... except it isn't an amnesty, and Reagan actually DID enact amnesty, so there's actually a comparison to make proving that it isn't. How surprising, Shooter has it wrong right out of the gate again.
His heroic efforts to get even a technical semantic hair-splitting victory still all fail.
All he's really accomplishing is that by failing to show any of the lies aren't lies even with herculean effort and ridiculously transparent spurious rhetoric is making it even more crystal clear just how massive a liar Romney is.
You have to wonder if that's what this bad disabled troll is going after.
Step away from the FAUX NOISE kool ade!!!!
Disgusted..., Grumpy..., & MN BadGirl,
I'm sure what he is doing is throwing up a possible distortion/misrepresentation tactic for non-posting trolls to use elsewhere. (pun intended)
This guy's just some failed Walter Middy mediocrity imagining his laborious labor is being used as an example by the admiring silent wingnut masses to deal a blow to the liberal/progressive/Socialist/Marxist/Communist agenda. He spends his waking hours concocting this transparent garbage and, because there's no objective reward, he has to justify it in his own mind that it's actually accomplishing something.
He does nothing else in life but ride the internets. Can you imagine some "thinking lurkers" actually taking his trollery seriously? If it were original, intelligent, and not the stuff of cliched hackneyed trollery, maybe. But it's not. Nobody here is fooled and no lurkers are fooled. How could they be? He's pummeled every time. And even if nobody's around to clean the mess off the walls, it doesn't matter; it's just too obvious that the best he can do is look for superficial, literal technicalities for which he can somehow claim he's not completely objectively wrong -- whether or not it's valid in context -- and for which he gets to laughably conclude complete victory. And he can't even get to laughable technicalities.
Just a pathetic act.
Since I have a few moments on my hands, let's examine #4. Obama didn't promise 8% unemployment, Christina Romer did. What a weak dodge. Worse, the 8.3% number is bogus. The real rate is 11% or more as Mr Klein documents for us.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/wonkbook-the-real-unemployment-rate-is-11-percent/2011/12/12/gIQAuctPpO_blog.html
Hmmm. Maybe I should start a commentary called Benen BS.
Whoops wait a minute, #7 is especially bogus. Benen wants to give Obama credit for other people's work? Obama has no control over drilling on private land, and drilling on Federal land is down.
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/oil-production-federal-lands-has-declined-under-obama
I don't want to read the other ones or I'll be at this all day. Heh.
Hahahahahahaha..., yet another FAIL. Was that really your best shot?
Another lame attempt at the oldest one the wingnuts have. The 8% imbecility. Time doesn't make false morph into true:

Oil production up during Obama Administration. You can't argue with cold numbers on oil production. -- unless you're a dumba$$ wingnut who likes being laughed at:
I say give all the other ones your best shot, Walter Mitty FAIL boy.
Shooter I went to your source regarding #4 argument and this is how is starts:
Wonkbook: The real unemployment rate is 11 percent
Posted by Ezra Kleinat 07:51 AM ET, 12/12/2011 TheWashingtonPost
Typically, I try to tie the beginning of Wonkbook to the news. But today, the most important sentence isn't a report on something that just happened, but a fresh look at something that's been happening for the last three years. In particular, it's this sentence by the Financial Times' Ed Luce, who writes, "According to government statistics, if the same number of people were seeking work today as in 2007, the jobless rate would be 11 percent."
These 24 installments should be available on a musical toilet paper roll, MP3 compatible so we can add his b s to our own excrement.
I'm glad you keep up this list. It would be more useful if you divided it into "misleading" and "out and out false".
The media had no problem labelling Al Gore as a liar, even when he told the truth. What is it about Romney that allows him to escape the same label. "Mendacious" and "dishonest" are just too subtle. People need to start referring to him as a "bald faced liar."
That "(R)" after his name? Just guessing, of course.
A lot of us are wondering where the media is on Romney's blatant lies. The media needs to take off the kid gloves and start confronting Mitt and the Republicans on their falsehoods. Does anyone in the media outside of Fox really believe Republicans will refuse to appear for interviews and talk shows? A politician who doesn't want to get his face in the media? Republicans cannot spread their lies far enough on Fox alone and their audience is not that large.
Mike,
I've started blistering reporters with e-mails after egregious false equivalence and not calling a spade a spade. They DO NOT like it. I DO NOT care. I keep hounding them. With enough negative feedback I think it could make a difference.
Also, don't forget editors; they control the tone and headline wording.
Steve, we need a version of this that includes all the parts and takes out the duplication. When I have asked others to read the chronicle, they discredit it with all the duplication that comes from writing this over time. It would be helpful if we had a single document we could point people to.
I understand that this shouldn't be necessary, but we have to keep in mind the fixated position many on the right are "inflicted" with. It is a chore just to get them to read something not generated by Faux news. Any opportunity to call bull@!$%# will be used whether it is reasonable or not. I single list without duplication would make this a weaker response and increase the effectiveness of this argument.
The duplication comes from the fact that Mittens keeps saying the same lies again and again. Each time is unique, and is still relevant because he hasn't kissed and made up with the truth.
Probably a master list of lies is the answer, but the weekly list keeps everybody reminded that calling the Lyin' Sack of Mitt out on his lies doesn't impede him from repeating them.
It does goes to show that he absolutely knows he's lying, that he views that it is necessary to fool people in order for him to win, and that he's unscrupulous, unprincipled, and character-deficient enough to do it.
Can you even imagine the time, work, and people that this would take? OMG, it would double the national debt.
Start with Mittens being a bully and a serial animal abuser. What else do you need to know?
If someone can laugh about abusing animals imagine what else he would, and probably did, do. And his wifey is right there next to him from the abuse of Seamus to the amount of pain killers injected (or whatever) to a poor horse that they then sold to someone. They lost that court case when the new owner sued them.
What else is there to say? If they will do that to animals what will they do to you and your family? This (I hate to even call him this) human should never EVER have any kind of power over any living thing.
For Steve, it would be a copy-and-paste operation. He could have an intern come up with a master list and put it on the web site. And the weekly offerings would be understood to be the particular pile of manure Rmoney chose to wallow in that particular week.
I agree. And if it's to be taken seriously, it has to be proofread. This edition is rife with errors.
Steve, I agree with Cyberguy that a master list would be nice. And I appreciate you doing these.
However, lately you have a lot of "There is no version reality in which this is true." I know you've been over that point before, and that you've documented it. But by making it so offhand, you've made the post basically unforwardable, and not too friendly for someone just joining this week. The preponderance of those make it seem pretty much like Steve says rather than facts, even though I know you've got documents because I've been following this since the start.
If you could just have a 2-3 sentence explanation for each one and the link to the fuller explanation, that would make it easy for newcomers. And it would be a great thing for all your followers to forward or bring up every time someone who only just began paying attention to the race and notices that some Romney things aren't adding up.
Thanks again! I love your posts and have been following since PA.
In addition, I'd like to see links to places that document where Romney made his mendacious remarks so that outside parties could see for themselves when and where the statements were made. It's revealing that he keeps saying the same things week after week, even after significant outside criticism about the validity of such statements.
thank you for this service to your country
"angryblacklady" flags a new dishonest willard ad that features some hillary 08 soundbites out of context...shocking, i know

Here's a request to all on the vine.
The last several weeks on programs like Meet The Press, Face The Nation, This Week, and even Fox Sunday, I stand and pull my hair (what's left of it on top) on statements made by the right that are misleading, distorted, or simply a flat out lie.
What pisses me off is the moderator just lets it go.
I had email Face The Nation, and requested that Bob Shieffert drop his commentary when aboslute lies are told on his program.
Basically, calling out B.S.
I'm going to email this list of outright lies to these programs and ask that they discuss them in length.
My request. Do the same and email these programs and maybe if they get enough calls, emails, or letters, that they might discuss them.
By the way, I have lately been watching GPS on CNN. Farreed's program is excellent - and it's not one sided or not.
Thanks, and thanks for seeding this.
Unfortunately, the MSM is infested with corporate wh0res and moral cowards.
Let me add to your request, Rob. Every time you catch a reporter engaging in false equivalence, stenography, and fake even-handedness, e-mail the reporter and let them have it about their duty to inform its readership by painting an honest picture of reality.
I've been doing this with reporters from various corporate-owned media. They REALLY don't like it. I do not care. Hammer them.
That can only be done is the OWNER of the program, channel, magazine, whatever allows it and guess who they are???
They need negative feedback. Lots of it.
Better still, stop wasting your time and energy watching Press the Meat, Deface the Nation, This Weak and especially Fox Propaganda Sunday.
In case you weren't aware, MSNBC has recently introduced some excellent weekend programming hosted by Chris Hayes and Melissa Harris-Perry which for four hours each Saturday and another four each Sunday cover a variety of topics of importance and interest with depth and calm wit that won't insult one's intelligence or integrity every few seconds or so as the programs you're complaining about routinely do. Their shows have quickly become some of my favorites - I can actually enjoy watching weekend public affairs programming for the first time in years (with the exception of Bill Moyers, whose terrific programs also tend to air at various weekend hours in my market). Thank you, MSNBC!
Don't tell me that the Media isn't Bias to Obama!!!! They love that lying SOB! He has ruined this country & I for one will not be voting for him!!! He should be impeached because Yes he did do more damage to this country that any other President including Jimmy Carter!!! (sung to the Oscar Meyer tune) The President has a first name it's B A R A C K, The President has a second name it's O B A M A, Barack Obama showed us his way of F'ing up the U.S.A. !!!!!
I love it when people throw around generalities about ruined country etc. You are entitled to your opinion, but you would be worth listening to if you listed concrete complaints or instances and skipped the implied bad language
Actually, I will tell you the media isn't biased toward Obama. There's no shortage of evidence that it isn't.
From old: http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=3612
To new: http://www.politicususa.com/media-bias-exposed-romney-gets-3-times-more-positive-coverage-than-obama.html
There's more where that came from.
-
If you got your head out of Rush Limbauagh's butt, you'd get your facts straight.
Disgusted...,
They have to know d@mn good and well that there is no pro-Obama media bias, but they figure it is a useful lie to say that there is.
I think they really believe it.
when is the media, and etc. going to stop enabling Romney to tell these huge lies; they reward him; would we reward our kids for lying?
For the new entertainment 'news media' it is all about the horse race. It is not attention getting business if it is not neck to neck. With G.W. Bush and Al Gore the media had to make Bush look far better than he was and Gore far worse than he was or there was no horse race worth watching. Falsehood and exaggerations were and are the name of the game. Al Gore never said he invented the internet. He was however the primary mover behind seeing to its existence. People never heard about that fact. Swiftboating now means using deception to destroy someone because that is what was done to Kerry. There is no fair and balanced, there is no truth; There is only making money.
When the monopoly that is the corporate media is broken up.
I don't know if this is accurate, but I thought I heard that the Repubs had received about $900 million from people of great wealth. To be used for campaign ads and propaganda. It is hard to imagine anyone having that amount of money to essentially "Play" with. They must be getting it back in Deductions, or think that if they win they will get that much and more back. How much good could that money do if even half of it were used do improve life for the citizens? How many jobs could it create? Instead it will be used for venomous untruths from and about mendacious Mitt.
We don't know where any money used by superpacs comes from thanks to the SOTUS. The Koch brothers have billions to play with, and they are just two of the puppetmasters of the right.
The people doing this don't want to help anyone except themselves. They are buying Romney. If he gets elected (just threw up in my mouth a little at that thought) the 1% will take your job, house, car, and your kids will be fit for nothing more than cannon fodder in the next war for oil.
Doesn't that scare regular people who are voting for the righties? Why are these folks voting against their own self interests?
John McCain corrected a woman who thought candidate Obama was Muslim by taking her microphone and telling her that he is a good American and a christian. Would Mitt-Witt do that? He hasn't yet, in fact he goes out of his way to spread these lies. Many people don't have the time or energy to look for the truth. Instead they are scared because their job was sent overseas and there is no new job in sight. Terrifying.
So we need to help each other a little. Send $5.00 to your candidate of choice, or to a well known charity that will use it to help people, not grind them under a foreign boot heel. Or don't and then live with the consequences.
But as you go about your day, Mitt and his wife have appparently gotten $13 million from Bain in the last year. Ask yourself this question: If he's a mormon does he tithe as the bible tells him to do? If you don't know what that is, google it. If he doesn't, why would you vote for him?
And finally (I promise) it is difficult to keep up with Mitt's lies because there are so many. I am home all day, having the time (finally) because I am retired to try to keep up with the latest issues. It's hard to do that because of things like the Internet because now the amount of information at our fingertips expands exponentially.
Our kids can rap along with the current recordings, but can they recite the pledge of allegiance, or if you are christian do they know the ten commandments? Did you ever help them with basic math? Are you working more just to keep up so your kids are raising themselves?
VOTE. Change the world and vote. And if you don't vote you can't complain. And if you don't vote for the correct candidates live with the results. VOTE PLEASE.
When dit the truth ever get in the way of a Romney l/GOP lie, do Mormans confess to thier lies at church?
Absolutely not, The men are all Priests once they jump a few hurdles like the two yr mission thing and perform those secret ceremonies in the forbidden Temple. They are all going to a special planet when they die and live happily ever after. They have already been sealed to their family members to assure it. By the way, they can even conjure up dead folks and make them members of their church. Apparently they do not need to be good. I think I just hit on one of the differences in their religion compared to the evangelicals. Oh yes, there is that magic underwear that protects them from commiting sin. Seems like maybe Romney has not been wearing his.
No drinking, no smoking, but apparently there is no prohibition against lying in the Mormon church. Hey Mitt, where are the rest of your wives?
I have noted that conservative theists in general seldom hesitate to lie to people not their co-religionists, if they think it is advantageious to do so.
You are absolutely right. Apparently it is okay to do whatever needed to attain their goals. By the way, these are not necessarily people advocating peace like many other Christians. They, not only stock pile food, but also weapons to protect their interest. There seems to be a bit of a mean streak among this group even though they may appear very friendly. That is only in hopes of recruiting people into their religion. Believe me I know. I have a relative who is Mormon. I don't know what the religion teaches about loving thy neighbor but she is so full of hate for Pres. Obama and his wife. The kind of venom these people spew makes no sense.
Number 3: last line **Should not**
why are people letting him get away with all this junk? he should not even be polling in double digits. just think, if obama had said any of these lies the republicans would have a field day playing it on a loop until election day. let's do this to mitt. play these lies over and over everywhere. just a thought.
The first word I think of would be "MORMONIZED" similar to PLASTICIZED or maybe even MARBELIZED as in relating to linoleum.
Romney is one of the most dishonest people running for President I have seen in a number of years. There have always been those who take things out of context or fudge the truth but Romney just flat out lies and there is so much documentation to prove it. I think he feels he does not need to answer any questions or be held accountable because he will just be elected because he is not Obama. This is the most arrogant, disgusting, excuse for a Presidential candadate I have wittnessed in my 68 years. This seems to be way of the Republican party. What happened to honesty being one of the most desired traits, especially to hear the high moral right wingers tell it - when it comes to Democrats?
While I have at times not been pleased with Obama's handling of things (it's like he was in training for the first 18 months) I am growing more and more frustrated with the main stream media each time I read yet another list of Romney's endless lies that are simply not being reported on. They play clips of his speeches and not once do I hear an anchor mention the man is incorrect in his comments. When he is on camera with the press, can't ONE damn reporter have these things printed out so they can ask him WHY he is lying, prove he is lying while he stands there and get his response? Are we going to let Mitt Romney simply lie his way until November unchecked? Make up anything he wants without being accountable. I don't care what party he is in, he has to be one of the most dishonest people I have EVER seen run for public office! Almost every other comment is a fabrication and he has no problem lying every day until election day in order to get into office. This is very very scary!
Yah, and "mendacity" is too opaque. The man lies. He does not tell the truth. He does not correct himself. He evidences no regret, shame or recognition that lying as he does is not all right. Devout what? Devout liar, one guesses. But let's not mince words. He LIES.
Mitt Romney even lies about his lies. How do you know when he is lying? His lips are moving.
Romney is a Wall Street Salesman, what do you expect.
It's all been said. Romney lives in a fantasy world of his own making.
It's a strange world we live in and if you live there you are strange too. I must have the same friends.
