It's still hard to imagine what he was even thinking.
A state lawmaker from Brooklyn has canceled an event for women to learn "posture, deportment and the feminine presence."
Republican State Sen. Marty Golden sent out a mailing advertising the July 24 business etiquette event. His website said women would be taught to "sit, stand and walk like a model."
But Golden canceled the event Tuesday after critics said he was out of touch with the lives of working women.
You think?
Keep in mind, the intended point of Golden's now-canceled event had to do with employment -- he thought women who learned "the feminine presence" and how to "walk like a model" would be in a better position to get jobs. The advertised tips also included lessons on how to "walk up and down a stair elegantly," as if that would come up in a job interview.
It's the 21st century. I just thought I'd mention that.

The only etiquette I need is to know, is how to properly (and elegantly) drive my knee into the appropriate part of the groin area, so that it gets maximum effect.
He is the kind of guy I'd want to do that to.

I am not usually struck to such incoherent babbling, but OH MY GOD.
That he got to the point where he sent out a mailing suggests that he isn't the only idiot in his office.
The women in his office were too demure to demur.
I am pleased to find New York City also suffers the scourge of the crabbed right wing not just us in the souf or in flyover land.
I think he just wanted an excuse to dress in drag, to demonstrate.
(He doesn't realize that, as the boss of the office, he doesn't need an excuse.)
This isn't just "out of touch". It's BONKERS.
A member of the GOP... teaching etiquette... the absurdity and hypocrisy astounds.
Not that this excuses him, but it's not wholly unbelievable, if you read employment blogs and research, things like:
1) "Pretty" people (men and women) get hired faster than ordinary looking people. (Note: pretty in this case are those people that conform to the societal idea of what that means, e.g. looking like people on tv)
2) Women bosses tend to hire women that they perceive as less physically attractive than themselves and tend to be tougher on and discriminatory toward women they perceive as better looking.
3) HR people bring their own personal biases and stereotypes into the hiring process, hiring in gender stereotypical ways. (men for certain jobs, women for others) Highlighting that gender roles of what being and looking "male" or "female" still affect employment.
Whether these things are fair, useful, bigoted, or whatever, is a different conversation...but they exist in the labor market.
I agree that the thinking behind this isn't being pulled out of nowhere, and even though I haven't done the research you have, I have no doubt that those findings are true; I've witnessed them myself. For me, the wholly unbelievable thing is that someone would cater to this trend. Not only does it condone this behavior, but it exacerbates it; as a woman, part of the reason I feel like more attractive women are a threat is that they often are, even if not by choice. A system that gives preference to more attractive people makes them a threat to less attractive people.
this is sad.... and hysterical! Are all of these idiots totally deluded with their fantasies of how the 1950s should have been?

Believe me when I tell you that the Charm School I attended when I was 13 (1967!!!) has made all the difference in the world....ah, comportment.
Being able to walk across a room with a book on your head is much more useful than most people think. Take shoplifting, for instance. You can make out like a bandit while all the time the security guy is staring, stupefied, at the hardback copy of Breakfast at Tiffany's sitting on top of your skull.
LOL! My mom taught me to walk with a book on my head. I could balance it maybe thirty seconds before catching it as it slid off. I don't think she had shoplifting in mind - just wanted me to walk like a girl - the femme kind. The tomboy swagger prevailed.

While we all know that MAD MEN is not current events, cut the guy some slack. The first line says he'd cancelled the event. It's pretty inapropriate for a legislator to teach beauty tips, personally or otherwise. Sadly, though, we the reality-based have to acknowledge what statistics reveal, beauty-obsession grants an economic edge, however unfair.
I am left with one thought--one very loud thought: WHAT?!

I wonder why they always vote against their own self interest? Do they not have a clue what is happening in the Federal House of Rep. and in State Houses across our country? Hundreds of bills that restrict and limit the rights of Women, are they deaf dumb and blind? I am beginning to think so. Especially MARRIED Women that seem to be favoring the tax avoider Romney. How can they possible imagine they will be better off without President Obama?
