Ok. This is not a comment, but it is driving me crazy: What does Rachel mean when, at the end of some of her shows she says "Ok, say it with me...prison"
Thank you!
It's the show that comes on right after her show on Fridays.
It's called Lockup and looks into what life in prison is like through showcasing different prisoners. Or different prisons. I will watch it once in a great while. :)
RM makes gentle fun of it--not really criticizing, realizing the time has to be filled by something that generates income.
HEY RACHEL MADDOW SHOW TPTB!
OK, we just heard the official announcement about the NBC buyout of MSNBC.com.
There's considerable consternation among Newsvine community members, to find out if the 'Vine is included in the deal. We've invested a lot of time and built relationships in that space, and if the plug is suddenly gonna be pulled, we'd like a head's up to organize a protest, holler like hell, or find some kind of alternative that is NOT Facebook Connect (which has a much weaker community, full of spam and more trolls and generally less intellectual discussion-- most responses are of the "Me too" and "Uh-huh" variety on Facebook, I'm sure you've noticed).
ANYTHING YOU CAN TELL US WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!
OVER $100K....he earned OVER $100K per year while 'retired' from Bain.
I assume you can see the significance of what I'm saying...
Actually no. That's less than some civil servants make in retirement.
But at least they're not lying about their status or who they're associated with... or whose jobs they're signing off on sending overseas. And, most importantly, they aren't committing a felony by lying to the SEC.
Um, and they're not running for president.
Liar liar. Who can trust this guy? It's like republicans already know they're voting for the conservative party and the old Bush administration. And - Not President Obama. They've put up the most glossy face on their wretched politics.
There really is a Borg, and President Obama is running against it.
Look we're talking politicians here. Neither are perfect. My main criteria is that Romney knows how to make money, and Obama doesn't. Love it or hate it, an economy is determined by whether people think they'll make money tomorrow.
Remedial civics lesson for you: Presidents (and governments) don't work like a business, they don't earn money... and unless Romney plans on loading up the Pentagon with debt and then outsourcing national defense to China, his experience doesn't apply to the job he's after. If you want business-centered government, focus on Congress... and get the GOP out of it, since they've spent the last 4 years proving they care more about what's good for them than what's good for business (and more importantly America).
The government is not like a business. A business is supposed to show a profit and the government should collect enough revenues to pay it's bills and no more.
We have a long way to go to pay off all the bills and for awhile will have to collect more than we spend to pay the bills. Amazing to me how many don't understand these concepts.
It would be interesting to know whether, for that reporting form, "over $100,000" is the top category and has no ceiling.
@FauxPas, that is an insult to the Borg.
The next time you go to a job interview, try to tell the employer what questions are relevant for him to ask and tell him that you'll decide what paperwork and background information you will share.
Or try that in court when you're the defendant.
Yeah, Keva knows what's what! Hillary's got her on speed-text!
What was Mitt Romney's response when he looked at his tax returns in 2000, 2001, 2002 and beyond and he saw that he was profiting from his firm's outsourcing of jobs, investing in fetus disposal and other nefarious dealings and that a large portion of his assests were parked in offshore tax havens and Swiss bank acounts? Did he demand that his name be removed from all things Bain? Did he refuse to accept the money and give it all to charity? Did he demand that all of his offshore accounts be closed immediately?
He can play footsie all he wants with when exactly he left Bain, the documents and statements contradict his claims. But the larger point is that whether he was in charge or not beyond 1999, he has continued to profit from the company's actions to this day.
Eeeek Romney might have lied about his status with Bain! Throw him in jail!
Obama actually lied about Obamacare being a tax! -Eeeee.... Well, that's OK.
Heh.
Shooter,
You just don't get the distinction, do you? Whether or not you think Obama was "lying" about Obamacare, he didn't lie to a Federal agency.
The question is: Did Romney lie to a Federal agency? There are serious penalties for that!!
As for lying to the American public? Anyone can lie with impunity to us - Romney is proof of that!!! And the only penalty is how we vote!
Don't try and distract us with nonsense, Shooter!!
BTW, are you being "paid" to come here and made these statements?? You seem to spend a lot of time here at a blog you profess to really dislike, constantly repeating yourself.
By that standard, lawyers are lying when they lose a case, or have something ruled against them, or have an objection overruled. Roberts redefined the mandate penalty, he didn't "discover" that Obama was lying about it being a tax.
Mitt, on the other hand, is either lying to the public about being a part of Bain for those years (and being responsible for outsourcing/offshoring jobs, which won't fly well with the people he's trying to get votes from), or he's committed a felony by lying on SEC forms. Either one is worse by far than having a judge rewrite your law.
Saying Obama "lied about the mandate being a tax" is as stupid as it is false. The mandate was, in case you hadn't noticed, not a "tax" in Massachusetts where the plan was already in place. In fact, it was not a "tax" until the Supreme Court said it was. Now, maybe YOU know what the Supreme Court will rule, years in advance of the ruling, but most of us including O don't have that sort of prescience.
Romney says he wasn’t responsible for all those things after 1999. Even though his name shows everywhere on paperwork saying he is responsible plus the evidence where it shows him talking about doing business at Bain Capital. What is Romney going to do when he signs a bill into law that nobody likes? Oh no, it wasn’t me, I am not responsible. Especially when his signature is on the bill. There is a serious question here, does Romney take responsibility for anything he does or is he still like a little kid crying for his way. And if Romney doesn’t get his way, he continues to pout and cry like a baby? What would Romney do under a more serious world situation send out the military to nuke others to pieces?
Romney will be put into the Oval Office by a coalition of the 0.1%, largely members of the American Legislative Exchange Council which (among many other feats) bought the Wisconsin recall election. His job will be to sit down and shut up except when called to stand in front of a camera. You know, sort of like George W. Bush, acolyte to president Dick Cheney and cat's-paw of the oil industry.
Rhere is something about name droppers that makes me wonder, why such ego boosting tactics are needed. Shame? I don;t get it.
Bain outsourced and laid off, took pension and health care away from workers. We have too much of that, so Rmoney covering up that and not showing his tax returns makes voters ask what is he hiding and why should we think Rmoney administration would be systematically cutting, when he said he would do that, cutting jobs is what he knows and likes. "I like being able to fire people".
Was there a fundamental change in business in Bain '99 and Bain '01 or '02 or '12?
Would Romney have acted any differently had he not left? Was there some business destroying culture at Bain that Romney was keeping at bay until his departure?
I am still trying to find the bodies found in the water on your marine charts.
We are really making this more complicated than it has to be. This was his company until 2002. These were his employees during this time. He had explicit veto power over any of their actions even if he was not involved in day to day management If his employees were taking the company in a direction that he didn't want it to go, he could have stopped them.
It was on his watch. It was his responsibility. He may not like what happened but he owns it both literally and figuratively.
When Captain Francesco Schettino of the Coasta Concordia tried to shift blame to his employees the news media was not nearly as sympathetic.
What Romney is asking voters to believe is that he as the sole shareholder and owner of Bain Capital had no input on the company's business. That is incredulous even for the average voter. As Judge Judy frequently says on her show "If it doesn't make sense, it not true."
That was good Romney went on all those news channels and yes indeed, he has a lot of questions to answer. But it is comical how Romney is hiding at his fancy estate scared to talk to anybody right now. Has Romney ever grown up yet and how to deal with people and for once tell the truth, instead of lies. Romney what is your problem, have you been all this time living a life of lies? After all, he was some fancy CEO of a company and now he cannot even deal with the common people. How much more lacking can Romney get? Romney, how do you expect to be President, if you cannot even deal with everyday people?
On a slightly peripheral question (aside from the lying part) - what did Bain do between 1999 and 2002 that makes its particularly toxic? Did I miss something?
it has to do with the question of when Bain began seriously outsourcing jobs and was Romney actually in control at that time.

I am posting a letter to President Obama - will someone help me get it into his hands? I believe in him and I believes he cares about me - if he knew i existed.
Dear Mr. President:
I am a small business woman who desperately needs your help.
Let me start by saying I believe in you. I equate you and The First Family with the
Kennedy family’s mentality of caring for the American people. You MUST win in
November! My country NEEDS you – even the “tea party” needs you – they just don’t know it.
Ineed you to “stand with me” now, as I am standing with you. In the scheme of
your job, my dilemma may appear to be small.
But, my dilemma does affect 10,000+/- jobs across the country. A portion of these jobs are in the swing states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida; states you need to win in November.
Stand with small business and influence these blue-collar voters. You PROMISED me that you would stand with the people. You PROMISED me that you are against Big-Business/Special-interest groups that buys votes and determines policy in your administration. You promised me……..
This is my dilemma:
I have been on this earth for 63 years. I am a single woman. I had an American-dream job for around 30 years as a mainframe computer- operator.
In 2009, my co-workers and I lost our jobs. There went middle-class living. Because my skills are now obsolete, what could I do? My first thought was go back
to school, because education is the road to upper and middle class. But, at my age, training and then a complete career change was not possible.
My niece found a Roll Your Own (RYO) shop that was booming. This store was full of customers buying a legal product, tobacco. This was not your typical tobacco store – customers stood in front of large machines and created their own cigarettes. And, their
own creation cost roughly 1/2 the price of those manufactured by tobacco
companies.
This was a new American business concept. An American initiative! An American job creator. The machines were manufactured right here in the United States… in Ohio. Retail stores were opening up all over the country. US Vendors were supplying products. Here was a way for me to help myself – I could “create a job for myself”.
I could create jobs for other people. Maybe, with enough hard work, I could get back into the middle-class again. Maybe, I wouldn’t be old and poor after all!
I choose to take a chance and one of the 1,500 retail stores is mine. I gathered all my resources; my partners did the same, borrowed $50,000 and created myself & my partners’ jobs, on a shoe-string budget. I hired employees. I bought two of the big-red machines. I bought inventory. My business has been operating since 10/13/2010. I have 9 employees, plus 2 owners. My customer base is +/- 3000 customers. My customers are those among us that are exercising their right of free choice. The right to purchase and use a legal product – tobacco. The right not to have their purchase power
limited due to cartel control of the tobacco industry. We made a profit in the first year of business.
On Friday, 07/06/2012 at 17:55 ET, I had to unplug our 2 machines, drastically
limiting options for our customers and cutting our profits dramatically. Mr. President, when you signed Section 100122 of the Highway Bill, I was redefined… from retail to manufacturing. An American business concept. An American initiative! An American job creator. It all stopped…….….just stopped.
How do I keep my store from going under? Who do I lay off? How many in my store most go? My heart is heavy with sadness for these hard working Americans. Not one of my employees deserve to lose their job.
Mr. President, if my store goes under, I will lose my home since the store is my
only source of income. Another foreclosure to add to the statistics – my partner is in the same boat as I am. I will no longer be able to help my handicapped sister and brother-in-law. Another foreclosure.
My loss is not good news for you. The 80,000 job gain you announced Friday, 07/06/2012 is not accurate. Mr. President, the moment you signed Section
100122 of the Highway Bill - 10,000 jobs were jeopardized. 10,000 jobs! 10,000 American citizens that were employed since you took office! And, what about
the ripple effect – now, how many are affected? In any other situation, this would have been “headline news”. But, the tobacco cartels dominated “the spin” and nothing was said about this group of Americans. 10,000 jobs, Mr. President. Small Business owners losing everything. The last thing our country needs is the lost of even ONE job. My country can’t afford the loss of ONE small business, let alone the closure of 1,500 retail stores, and the closure of the manufacturing plant in Ohio. And, what about the ripple effect – now, how many supporting businesses will lose income?
What about the businesses that are making more sales because the
consumers in our communities have more money to spend? Talk about a stimulus!!!!
Mr. President, Big Tobacco “convinced” Congress that RYO stores are not paying
proper taxes. They say we found a loop-hole for our RYO industry. Nothing
could be further from the truth. Our customers were exercising their Congress-granted right to “Roll their own cigarettes for personal use and consumption”. Mr. President, we pay taxes. We pay taxes on the tobacco we buy; we pay sales-tax, we pay payroll taxes, we pay income taxes, and don’t forget local taxes. The true intent behind Big
Tobacco’s motivation is to put the RYO stores out of business. It comes down to the fact, we are taking a tiny percentage of their customers and they do not want to share. The tobacco business is a monopoly, and competition is not encouraged. They used Congress and they used you to eradicate the RYO industry.
Mr. President, the moment you signed Section 100122 of the Highway Bill into law,
you lost votes. Votes nationwide. Votes in the swing states. Voters sitting on
the fence. Voters who may not have voted for you but wouldd have been influenced by your attention to our issue. We emailed you. We Tweeted you. We Facebooked you. We posted on your Whitehouse comments section. Remember the ripple
effect. Blue-collar people in Pa., Ohio, Florida, Virginia….The very people you are trying to reach. These extra votes could make the difference in November.
Mr. President, my dilemma is also your dilemma. You pack up and leave the Whitehouse and go back home; I lose my business, my sole source of income and my home. Without your help, we could lose this battle together.
Stand with me, Mr. President. Stand with Small Business. Stand with the working people. Keep your promise you made to me.
I believe in my heart that if you understood the ramifications of Section 100122,
you would not have left it in the Highway Bill.
Believe in me. I believe in you.
Help me and others like me. Help us help ourselves!
I must add one more comment: Yesterday, I laid off 4 employees. I am sick
to my stomach
Big Tobacco is organized to lobby Congress, who in turn the writes the legislation favored by big business, thus the Tobacco industry got an amendment to an unrelated bill Highway Bill.
The Tobacco Industry apparently has the right to offers its products, the customer has apparent right to consume those products. If that were all there was too it, there would not be a problem. However these products, their purveyors and their customers are assuming the right to expose the rest of the public to the damages of their products, and those customers' choices to poison their own bodies, were these compensated fairly I would see a refund. However better crops, healthier products, better use of land and soil, smarter use of their time alone cannot condemn bad economics. When the public is considered, would your family love you less if did not consume tobacco, would be better off if you lasted long enough to see your grandchildren grow and as for cost, well good heath cost enough, so draining the treasury to help you kill yourself better do not good.
When you are for tobacco products and against the tobacco industry, and cannot see the relationship to highway funding legislation and a Congress that working against your interests, then where would you start.
The President has to take what Congress passed as legislation, parts are toxic, and parts are bad, and like you has to make choices for the greater good. The system is working against you and that system includes many bad businesses and a really bad Congress. In this case there is more than enough blame to go around. What good here is here looks to be in the Presidents favor, to the rest of us the problem is a) Congress, b) Tobacco Industry, c) Retail Tobacconists, d) Tobacco Users. The general public has no recourse since we have no one in Congress working for us, me or you.
PS: Have you located the source of the amendment and those in Congress voting in favor, they are to blame. (Vote Accordingly)
People talk about this healthcare law where the majority of people want it now and that is good. But do people really understand the problems that occurred with health insurance? And it is the same basic old problems with any business. Health insurance was started initially to help people with any medical conditions that needed attention and really wasn’t intended to make lots of money. But what occurred? Well, the same with any business, they started to set up policies where more money could be made without any concern to the welfare of people. Insurance Companies easily have databases that show healthcare costs and negotiate with Hospital’s, Drug Companies, and Doctors on what should be paid. But these Insurance Companies found out that if you do not force these other entities to economically save and optimize any form of healthcare, you could make a huge amount of money in comparison to the amount of people using health insurance. And if there was too many people that needed to see the Doctor with some more serious health conditions, then get rid of these people, regardless if these people would die or not. Basically, these Insurance Companies have become a money machine and not to get the best prices for healthcare coverage’s, but to make money off the backs of whom has health insurance. Thus these Insurance do not want to negotiate for best prices, since they want to make lots of money to line their pockets. A businessman doesn’t change, he just looks for ways to make huge profits. And when you see these people who do not want this healthcare law that is the Insurance Companies trying to get rid of this law, because they want those huge profits they put in their pockets at the cost of others.
Rmoney sees the U.S. taxpayers as a business opportunity, so apparent;y do the Republicans. Yes, the ACA is putting the people that are sick in a position of having their care paid for, which is when insurance gets outraged that someone would use the insurance.
It isn't the mandate that bothers them so much as they have to pay for the elderly, sick and injured peoples' care.
Think about it, a person buys insurance goes along with no claims, but when the claim is made, chances are very good their rates would go up.
If Romney was not the Bain CEO in 2000, 2001, 2002 then did Bain have a CEO, if it was a different CEO then who was it?
Simple put a face on the CEO for each of those years? (2003, 2004, 2005, ...
And have papers to back it up.
Just saw this: As if you needed another reason why some people refer to the Sunshine State as "Flori-duh": Now a couple of hot shot Republican school board members in the Miami-Dade area are stomping their feet about First Lady Michelle Obama making an appearance at a campaign event to be held at Barbara Goleman Senior High in Miami Lakes. They're urging the event to be cancelled and are even questioning its legality. No one questions the use of this school by WHITE politicos.
Dear TRMS staff:
The mention of a "lead safe" on Friday's show in association with storing articles potentially contaminated with polonium made no sense. Polonium-210 decays to lead by emitting an alpha particle (and very rarely, a gamma ray). It's right there on your graphic. Alpha particles can be shielded by a thin sheet of plastic, a piece of paper, or even a couple of inches of air. Alpha emitters are dangerous principally when ingested or inhaled. The articles need not have been stored in a "lead safe". A plastic bag would do just fine.
However, the half-life observation was right on target. Given its half-life of 138 days, 8 years following an assumed poisoning very little residual polonium-210 should have remained.
